This is my favorite wine bar in San Diego, and I've been to many. I've been a wine aficionado for years, and was a bartender at an upscale wine bar in college, and my ex-boyfriend of many years was a master sommelier. This is to say, I know good wine, and I know when other people know good wine.

This place has great wine at outstanding prices. They are not the run-of-the-mill popular wines, but usually very subtle in character and flavor, small batch production types of wines. They really try to make sure you get the most bang for your buck with what they sell.

If you're just as happy with a $50 bottle of wine as you are with a $5 bottle, this place may not be for you. Because the wines are more expensive than you would find at Wine Steals, but they're substantially better if you're looking for quality. But if you're the type of person who's looking for $50 quality for a $20 price, then this is your place. Ask the bartender for recommendations, because they are all sommeliers and really know how to make a recommendation based on your tastes.

As everyone has mentioned, the ambiance is outstanding. It's low light, leather couches, flickering candles, surrounded by casks on the walls. It's utterly charming, and invites you to nestle in, enjoy your wine and your company. And there are board games scattered around, which is really fun.

As to the food - I've really liked everything there. We've had the Napa Panini, which is a great roast beef sandwich with arugula, horseradish and caramelized onions. The olive tapenade is clearly freshly made and delicious. But the hands-down standout are the goat cheese stuffed prosciutto wrapped dates. Served warm, they are PERFECT. Your food will be prepared by a loving perfectionist, who pays attention to every little detail. It takes a little while, but that's because it's slow food, not fast food.

Also, their happy hour ends at 7pm, so you have plenty of time to take advantage of the deals, which are considerable.

The only downside has nothing to do with the Cask Room, but with the location. It's in a kind of sketchy part of east village, and depending on where you park you may be surrounded by scary junkies. On the way back at about 8:00 last night, we ran into some homeless people leaning against my car clearly  finalizing a drug deal on the street. We parked a block away on Market. Maybe want to go to a paid lot and not park south of Park on Market.

When I say this place is off the beaten path, I mean it.

We were in San Diego for only two days and wanted to sample the best in the area that's away from touristy Gaslamp quarters. We got more than we bargain for.

Cask Room is located in the East Village, at the ground floor of an apartment building located across the trolley tracks. Sure, some shady characters were lingering here and there and I was probably too dressed up since we were going to a steakhouse after, but whatever.

We walk in and there are only two patrons sitting at the bar. Pretty much dead. The owner, Jules, confirms that people would stumble in here thinking its new but they've been here 5 years. Whoa. Not a lot of foot traffic because of the neighborhood. However, I've never felt more welcomed.

The Cask Room literally feels like you're hanging out in your living room. It's a little bit dim, with oversized leather couches, comfy pillows, board games and chill music in the background. They feature small production wines, craft beer and even have a short menu of apps, sandwiches and salads, etc. if you get hungry.

Contrary to others who thought their price by the glass is expensive, I thought it was fair. Considering the compact wine list they have, the choices you get are excellent. But if you've got a couple of hours to spare, bottles here are sold at retail, which is a BETTER deal. I had a dry sparkling wine here (the name escapes me) as recommended by Wes and the bf enjoyed his Russian River valley Pinot.

Owner Jules is the nicest! she recommended a couple of bars for us to check out after din and overall was a very pleasant lady. She informed us that they're moving in the next couple of months, so check their website for their new address.

Look no further for the perfect wine bar to hang out in downtown San Diego -- make it the Cask Room!

I wanted to like this place, I really did. It's not in the heart of downtown and so you avoid the annoying college kids who order the cheapest wine and sit and complain about their oh so hard lives. Instead of annoying college kids, you get horrible wait staff and a different annoying patron at The Cask Room.

I've been to Cask Room five times. My first time I went with friends the few things we tried to order off the menu they were out of due to "poor ordering" and so we ended up not eating anything. Convenient they didn't mention half the overpriced menu was out prior to us ordering a bottle of wine. Anyway, the wine was good, but couldn't judge the food that night.

I went another time with a different friend to show them this new place I found and it took more than half an hour after we asked to get our check brought to us after we'd been sitting around waiting for it. Finally we went up to the bar to get it all cleared up. Keep in mind, there were MAYBE three other couples in there. Not busy at all.

I was ready to write Cask Room off at this point because it was nothing special, parking is really hard to find (REALLY HARD) and I still hadn't had a chance to try food because (shocker) they were out of food AGAIN.

Then much to my delight Groupon ran a $15 for $35 special at the Cask Room. Me and a couple girlfriends bought the Groupon in hopes to turn our opinion around of this place. After three more chances, I still probably won't be back.

My friends and I always wait a couple weeks to use a food Groupon in hopes that most people who have bought them would be gone by then. So that's exactly what we did.

The first time we announced we had a Groupon up front (like you're "supposed" to do) and pretty much got scowled at and ignored from then on. We had to go up to the bar to order and we decided to try and get the chocolate fondue and SHOCKINGLY they had the stuff to make it. While the fondue IS AMAZING, it's overpriced for the amount of dipping items you get. However, it is fantastic and I ordered it the fourth time I was there.

The fourth and fifth time I was at Cask Room were nothing but the same ol' horrible service, stuck up staff who look down on you if you ask questions about the wines (isn't that their job?) and pal around with the snobby patrons who blab loudly about tannins and aroma while ignoring us normal people.

What prompted me to write this review is the owner and his attitude toward "low tipping, & entitled peeps who are almost always just there for a deal" Groupon buyers. (Direct quote from a tweet @thecaskroom) I've been in there when Mike (owner) has been in there and he's the worst of them all. Just because I'm younger than some of the other patrons, my money and my love of wine is just the same.

Mike also wrote a blog on their website about how Groupon was a horrible thing and urging people to boycott Groupon and other sites like it because it's killing small businesses (http://www.caskroom.co...)

I urge people to learn just who is running this place and see if they want to support someone who thinks oh so highly of themselves and so lowly of people who don't make 6 figures but still love wine and want to enjoy a good night out and can't afford to do it blindly without some incentive to try a new place.

All in all, wine is fine, but don't count on getting food. Parking is AWFUL and the wait staff makes you, well WAIT a long time for anything.

If you're looking for a good and fun wine bar, try The Wine Pub in Point Loma or Wine Steals in Point Loma. Really anywhere else but here.

There's my $0.02 Mike, and this time I paid full price for it.

This is what wine bars should be. Good wine that is not too pricey in a comfortable atmosphere that is not too stuffy. The leather couches are very inviting and the service is fantastic. I wish they would do flights since I like to try lots of different wines, but even without them, I really enjoy this place.

You do need to walk through some seedy blocks to get here from the Gaslamp District, but inside is an entirely different world. However, if you see a female junkie wearing a plastic bag bow on her head check you out with her male friends, you may want to turn a block early on your way back. Yeah, that's all it took to outwit their obvious attempts to do whatever it was they were contemplating.

BUT, keep that in mind and don't take a seat looking out the window, and you will have found a cozy, friendly place to enjoy some yummy wine.

Groupon led me to the Cask room.  I'm glad it did!  It's small & cozy right in front of the trolley station on Park & Market.  I like the dark leather comfy couches that make it seem like you are in a cool friend's living room.

Once we sat down the sommelier immediately came over to greet us and ask what we would like.  I told him I was feeling like a sweet white wine.  After a couple of complimentary tastes, I made my choices.  I went with the 2008 Montes Cherub Rose (Chile) which I really enjoyed.  Then I had a glass of  King Estate Vin Glace ice wine (Willamette Valley, Oregon) to really satisfy my craving for something sweet.  Really enjoyed the ice wine because it wasn't overly sweet.

They also have a great collection of craft beers for those that are not a fan of wine.  Being that the BF is into a Belgium beer kick, he choose a Koningshoeven la Trappe Isid'or Amber (Holland) which is $17 for a 750ml bottle.  Our sommelier had him taste it first and let him know if he didn't like it he would drink it later!  Of course, the BF loved it!

They have a limited menu, but what we had was really good!  We had the following...
*Cask Room Trio- olive tapenade, roasted red pepper hummus, & goat cheese peppadews w/ flatbread.  LOVED the olive tapenade & the goat cheese stuffed sweet peppers!  The hummus was also good but it taste like the stuff we buy from Costco.  This appetizer was definitely made for sharing.
*Avignon Panini- oven roasted turkey breast, french brie, arugula, roasted garlic, and chipotle raspberry compote w/ a side of bbq kettle chips.  Great tasting quality ingredients and they didn't skimp on the ingredients either.
*stuffed dates- proscuitto wrapped medjol dates stuffed w/ goat cheese.  These were really tasty.

The place was super busy at the time since the Groupon offer was expiring that weekend.  Service unfortunately did slow down.  They were nice enough to extend the coupon until the end of September.

Given that we enjoyed the atmosphere, service & wine list,  I will definitely be back for drinks and some appetizers.

Not much of a wine person, but am beginning to like a glass every now and than.

Needed to find a wine bar downtown, and this place came up and got good ratings.

It is quaint, nice cozy atmosphere with scattered leather couches and games out waiting to be played with some friends, and a good glass of wine.

Wes, the manager, was very nice, patient, and down to earth, which added to the very relaxed atmosphere. He brought me several wines to try because he didn't want to serve me a glass of wine I wasn't happy with.

Had the goat cheese stuffed dates with prosciutto and they were quite good.

Next time, going there to relax for a couple of hours and play some board games.

Very nice manager dude and wine lady person. Happy hour is cool too, weekdays form 5-7pm, $6 wine glasses and $3 pints. Had some wine earlier, so went a pint of Racer 5. And their glasses are slightly bigger than a pint glass. The manager said they welcome groupons, but can't combine during happy hour specials.

Very nice selection of wine bottles, and a very nice chill place for future visits. Bar area was super clean. They have nice dark sofas, candle lighting, and of course many casks out on display. Lady was nice and gave a bag full of old corks. Needed some corks for a friend of mine, and they were pretty cool just giving out a bag. She was about to give me more, but I didn't want to be too greedy, they were just handing them out like candy.

This place is just a little bit off from the main part of downtown on Park blvd between Market and Island St. But it is worth the walk to and from this place. Think of it as means to sober up a bit on your way to your car as you leave this place.

Decor is cool, dark, candlelit, female bathroom was super clean. The dude bathroom is closed for renovation when I came in this particular evening. Great customer service and great conversations about pretty much anything and everything. Will come back and try the happy hour vino next time.

Tucked away in the corner of an apt building across from a shady trolley track hides this little gem of a wine bar.

Cozy, is the first word I would use to describe this place. As you walk in your eyes adjust to the dark lighting and you'll settle in to one of the comfortable leather couches or at the bar and enjoy some good music.

If you sit at the bar you'll enjoy some friendly conversation with the bartender usually WES and you'll order one of many of their delicious and vast wine selection. If you have a hard time deciding then just ask for a recommendation. The bartender will usually give you a taste of whatever wine you want before you order a glass.

If you're hungry you can order off their menu which is full of some really delicious little dishes. Although I think it's pretty pricey for what you're getting. SO I wouldn't recommend going there to eat dinner. And the wait is very long.

The service is friendly and after a few times going you'll be known as a regular and instantly become friends with the staff.

All in all this is a great little wine bar to go enjoy a glass of your favorite wine and relax. Don't let the location turn you off because you'll be missing out.

The only thing I would complain about is that I think for the location the price is a bit high and the food takes too long to come out. Other then that I'm a fan.

My new favorite neighborhood gem.  The staff were very friendly and very knowledgable.  The wine was very good and so were the apps.  And they definitely let you taste before committing to a glass, without feeling forced into feeling like you have to like everything they pour.  Really enjoy this wine bar!

The only negative I see is that when you buy a bottle to take home you are buying it at their marked up prices, whereas at Wine Vault or Wine Steals you buy it a price closer to cost to enjoy at home.  But, if you don't need/want to buy wine to take home there are no negatives.

Disagree strenuously w/ Michael K.'s comments:

Six ounces -- yeah, right!  (closer to six ccs)
Groupon conditions say "can't be combined with any other 'OFFER.'"    "Happy Hour" prices aren't an "offer," as another coupon or one-time promo might be...

So, it's STILL deceptive, wrong and a shitty way to do business!

As I said, if you, as a business owner, are going to participate in a discount program, then DO IT WITHOUT attaching every "string" in the book.

Go during their happy hour times! Their wines are SO good and they serve it in generous portions! It gets pretty busy there so try to get there early to secure a table.

This place is a nice change from Wine Steals and other wine bars that have been around. There was an event in the back room so I didn't get to see it but it looked pretty cool.

We got a basket of bread which my boyfriend just devoured and then a pizza. it was pretty good - not dinner portion but appetizer portion for sure.

That was an experience... one that I won't like to relive.

The layout is very cozy and comfortable, the wine selection was top/mid grocery store shelf (which isn't bad)... just very far from Opus One.

The food was visually very appealing- platted nicely but tastless-SERIOUSLY please go, it's like a MAGIC TRICK... you put something in your mouth and you see it's food...you smell food... but you taste NOTHING....... it's truly MAGIC.......BLACK MAGIC!

Hhmmm.... Then there was a staff member... not mentioning who..  all I will say is that he doesn't think highly of the people who walk through the door that aren't to his standard.  His behavior was tasteless, just like the food.

I really wanted to love this place and brought a few friends with me to share this experience. I had a coupon during one of there promotions and couldn't wait to go.

The place is super small and don't EVER plan on going there with more than 4ppl cause you'll never get a seat. We waited about 10 minutes and got ourselves a table. It only had two chairs so we waited an additional 15-20minutes for two more chairs to be available.

The place was packed (and it was a week day) when I was there and they only had two people working. Not sure if this is normal or not. Of course when you only have two ppl working, you get poor customer service. We went just for drinks and appetizers and it still took over two hours. I can only image the money they kept losing by ppl walking out due to no seating. It should have only taken no more than 45min. to get us out of there not 2 hours.

I will say the appetizers were amazing as well as there wine selection.

The cask room certainly has a lot of style.  Upon entering into the small quaint room you feel immediately comfortable, they put a lot of effort into this as the lighting is soft yellow and the couches are very very soft and leather.  The atmosphere is so inviting and friendly that they even have a guitar on a stand at the bar for anybody to pick up and play at any time they would like, of course this means you have to be good otherwise you will be ousted, and booed, and have tomatoes thrown at you.

I had a couple beers here, I know what wine tastes like, but a new microbrewery?  I had to try it.  Airdale Porter is a dark and delicious beer with Chocolate malt and hints of Cinnamon and Vanilla and let me tell ya, it was dammed good.  I would happily have another one at any chance I got, might be my new favorite beer here in San Diego knocking the Stone IPA into 2nd place.

Come to the cask room when you want to have a conversation with friends and relax, the casks around the wall creates a setting that wine lovers dream about and the quality around you is obvious.  Even the bathroom smelled nice and had decorations as if you were in a well designed home bathroom.  I will be back here, no question about it.

I went here based on the many Yelp reviews and uber-hype I've been reading for weeks, and I gotta say...it totally lived up to it! Most definitely my new favorite wine bar in town.

The owner, Mike, jet-sets all over the world with the sole mission of finding the best smushed grapes on the globe. Not only does he find them, he brings 'em back to the 619 and gets us crunked on the cheap! Seriously, I couldn't believe how inexpensive these fantastic-tasting vino's cost. HUGE props.

He's also an expert on all-things-wine. My usual criteria for picking a quality bottle is:

    1. Is it good?
    2. Is it cheap?
    3. Will it get me weird?

If all of the above are met, I'm usually a pretty happy camper. Mike goes above-and-beyond to educate and ensure that you consume the right glass to meet your taste bud's desires.

It's also a great place to hang. Comfy sofa's and ass-friendly bar stools made it a breeze to kick back for a few hours, sippin' on some exotic red's while rappin' with my lady.

Overall, it was an awesome experience. I highly recommend you grab your best pair of knickers, DVR that episode of American Idol you've been dying to watch, and head downtown to experience this absolute gem in East Village.

I braced myself for a worst case scenario at Cask, but it was so premature cause my experience was fantastic!

I can understand that some Yelpers may have had a bad experience, and that may be due to that Cask is just getting started and is a little undermanned, but going there on a weekday was a real treat. I'd say, give it a second chance and don't be fixed on that past experience.

The owner is very passionate and knowledgeable about the different wines and it shows. I'm particular on the reds and he served a great trio of red vinos to sample; all three recommendations were on the mark.

The owner was both gracious and friendly, he provided us with complimentary bottles of a great tannic cabi and smooth merlot with our purchase! That was a welcome treat.

The ambiance is equally great with solo guitar playing in the background and lively, but private crowds immerse in their discussions. The lighting is dim but carries a rural feel - very comfortable. This is a great place to hang out with friends and ponder the imponderables and other imaginative discussions.

    Love it!

Okay, so the BF and I headed into the Cask Room last night to enjoy some wine before heading down to Syrah. It's such a cute little place and it's so close to home that we thought it was a great place to start off our night. We got there at about 8:30 and there was a small crowd all seeming to be having a good time. I had to update my review though because they actually had the items featured on the menu this time and we tried quite a few of them out.. Can I just say WOW!

Okay, so they have these Foccacia Crostinis right? One has Gorgonzola cheese w/ agave nectar & the other has goat cheese w/ pesto.. Both were delicious and only $8 bucks for a good sized plate! Seriously though, the one with the Gorgonzola was heavenly. I am salivating now JUST thinking about it! After we had our first glass of wine & the Crostini's we were just hanging out talking and ended up having another glass. We weren't in a hurry to leave, especially with the great atmosphere (and MUCH better music! It didn't put me to sleep this time! Yay!) The ladies now known as Julie & Kate are so wonderful and fun! We had some great laughs talking to them and hanging out at the bar.

Later on we also tried the dates stuffed with goat cheese & wrapped in prosciutto.... I'm such a picky eater and thought I wasn't going to be a fan... But the flavors blended so beautifully together. Sweet, salty, & creamy.. mmmm!!! We also ordered a panini but Julie told us we had to have a pizza instead, and she made us a delicious thin crust pizza with goat cheese, basil, pesto, & capicola (sp?).. OMG it was so tasty and so affordable! I couldn't believe it! Julie is a great chef and was so wonderful to us! We had a great time.

We never made it down to Syrah, we were at the Cask Room till 1:30 and were completely satisfied with our evening. We headed on home happily buzzed with full tummies and big smiles! I think the Cask Room may quickly become a new home away from home for the BF and I. We really enjoy ourselves there and it's just such an inviting space. 5 stars to the Cask Room they more than deserve it!

Stick with what you know. I'm new to San Diego, but I keep coming back to the Cask Room. The couches are ridiculously comfortable and they have free wifi!  The Cask Room carries a very unique selection of wines. The menu is almost exclusively smaller producers, which means you get to taste things that very few people elsewhere will ever experience.

Wine bars get a bad rap these days because the staff isn't knowledgeable and they serve you wine you can get at the grocery store or Costco for 4x the price!  I continue to go back to the Cask Room because I learn something new every time I visit.  The staff goes above and beyond to make your experience unique and enjoyable.  On some nights there will be wii bowling, other nights a tasting lecture or a documentary.  Each visit is something special.

This neighborhood is SCARY - don't walk more than 10 paces without looking over your shoulder on the walk from your car to the door.

If you make it alive though, your jumpy, scared little self will feel safe, secure, and glad you came - you're not living unless you take a risk every now and then!  The inside is beautiful - warm colors, intimate lighting, plush couches, and glowing red candle holders, illuminated by flickering light. Everything is very cozy. And the music is at perfect volume to allow for a nice conversation (well, depending on who you come with!).

The only negative about this place is that the menu is a bit small - 3 whites, about 9 reds, and a handful of beers and sparkling wines.

The service was EXCELLENT. He (the owner?) brought over a red - Hatcher - and we tried that (generous sample, by the way). My heart and taste buds screamed for more - but I decided to go for a white tonight so as not to stain my teeth - it's much harder to convince an officer you haven't been drinking when your pearly whites are purple. He brought over a chardonnay, let us sample, poured our glasses, and brought over a chiller for the bottle. He made sure our enormous, crystal glasses were never empty.

At the end of the night and the bottle, my now drunk friend knocked over her crystal glass, broke it, and and spilled the tiny bit of wine she had left. The owner came to clean up, and asked if she wanted him to refill a new glass for her - it was a very kind gesture.

If you don't mind visiting a seedy neighborhood, DEFINITELY pay a visit to the Cask Room - it's a really great experience. And hey, if you drink enough, you will be too drunk to notice the danger you are in as you are walking back to your car! Now it's just getting home you need to worry about....

The Cask Room is going to be my new go-to wine bar (over Wine Steals, which I can't handle anymore due to the crowds).

I (obviously) adore the East Village location, and I also love that you can walk in and easily find a place to sit on one of their amazing comfy overstuffed leather sofas or chairs. The people watching is fun, too- the location on Market and 12th next to the Trolley make for some *interesting* spectating.

Cask Room is just busy enough to feel like it's "the place to be" without being too crowded and loud- my friend and I were able to sit for a couple hours and converse without shouting at one another and/or reading each other's lips.

The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and as pointed out in previous reviews, they are pretty generous with their tastings. When we asked about his experience in the industry, one nice staffer took the time to sit and chat with us for a few minutes about various grapes,  pairings, etc. So nice!

We also tried the cheese board with crackers and dried fruit. It was perfectly yummy (and we were given complimentary "refills" on our crostinis when we ran low).

The prices are average for wine and food. I wasn't shocked at the high prices but I certainly didn't feel I was getting a deal, either.

Thank You!  Thank You! Thank You!

Mike, the owner, made the Laughternoon Dahlings wine-tasting event the best ever!  Mike greeted us, seated us, poured for us, educated us and selected our wine flight based on our groups preferences.

HIGH FIVE MIKE! He is the greatest! I totally cannot RAVE enough.  He is a casual, down-to-earth guy's guy.  Mentioned his wife affectionately, too!  Answered all our questions but not before challenging us to answer first.  Opinionated with fabulous insights and observations.  Both historical and international!!!  Used his iPhone to demonstrate different temperatures in Napa and Burgundy Region of France.

Cask Room was cozy, comfy and loved the wine room decor!!! All the barrels were so kewl.  The lighting was nice.  The music was very casual and upbeat.  The couches cozy!

This lil' downtown wine bar features mostly boutique wineries.  That's awesome!  Mike knows how many barrels were made and did a great job at explaining background in varietal and labelling.  As well as the artistic side of the labels.

Tuesday nights offers 5 flight tastings for $20 and a few lil' apps (i.e., olives, salami, artichokes, and antipasta).  The BEST part is all the knowledge and expertise (entertaining) that Mike provides.  We felt very special and well taken care of!

Many nights have happy hour.  Not a wine drinker?  No worries...there's a great selection of beer, too!

You know, we were supposed to be homebound by 8:30 pm.  However, we were having such a fabulous time ... we stayed a few hours later.  It was hard to leave!

The only thing I'd do differently is order some food (I totally forgot to eat!).

Oh, and Mike ... the only thing that would make your place even more comfy is ..... velvet sassy drapes blocking the view of outside (like Bubble Lounge in San Francisco).  Alternatively, light and airy drapes that you can kinda see through (like see activity outside) but not clearly see faces and such!  I only say this because I felt so happy and comfortable but sometimes, looking outside distracted me!  Maybe ... that is just me, though.  Ask your wife her opinion, too!!!!

My husband and I love wine and live downtown so we have tried most of the wine bars around here. I can say without any hesitation that this is the best spot in town. The wine is always amazing. It is complicated delicious and different.  The wine list changes constantly so you can always find something new to try and share.  The staff and proprietor  could not be better. They are personable and friendly.  They honestly want to make sure that you have a good time.  The decor is wonderful. Its a great place if you want to cuddle up on a couch and drink a glass with your sweety or if you want to belly up to the bar and make some new friends.  The food is great, fresh and organic and made with care.

The bottom line with this place is that they truly care. They care about the wine that they serve. They care about the food, including where it comes from. And they care about their customers.  There are not enough stars to give this place.

I had heard many a Yelper rave or bemoan about this place. In my first venture to this wine bar in East Village, I was impressed by the simplicity, elegance, quality and how affordable this place is. I got a chance to meet the owner and he was very nice and even let us finish off a bottle.

Apparently they have food, but I didn't have any. Friends who often there suggested against it. Overall my experience was pleasant. They have scrabble and a couple other games strewn amongst the plush couches and wine barrel tables.

Wow - I haven't had such a positive impression of a restaurant/bar like this in a long time.

I came here with my girl last night for a glass of wine.  I am not a big wine drinker but I was seeking out a nice evening of elegance and class so what better way to accomplish that than going to a wine bar?

The Cask Room is not in a great location.  12th and Market always has sketchy people at the trolley stop or waiting for the bus outside the corner store.  I had walked by The Cask Room before and knew it was much nicer than its surroundings but it is VERY nice inside.

There is a bar, wooden stools, and leather couches for you to choose.  I was very excited about the comfortable leather couches.  We found a couch and took in the romantic atmosphere - candles in dim lighting, wooden barrels to give an authentic winery feel, and soothing tunes filling the wine bar (not too loud, we could converse freely without trouble).

The woman and man who frequently asked if we needed anything were probably the owners.  I am from Chicago and one of the worst parts of San Diego is the lack of attentive server/waiter service.  The Cask Room had superior customer service.

Initially, I sampled a 'rose" wine that tasted cheap and the taste of alcohol was too strong.  Sure enough, it was the cheapest wine on the list.  I took a chance on a white wine of some sort that was good but the muscat stole the show.  My girl got a muscat that smelled like prune juice - yuck! - but was one of the best wines I have had!  Great texture and fun fruity flavors, pure excitement on my tongue - it was QUITE the EXPERIENCE.

The only complaint I have is that the large windows on the front of the building were dirty.  The glass table on which we placed are wine glasses was SPOTLESS but the dirty windows distracted some (sorry to nitpick but when you are just enjoying wine and looking around, I can't help but notice.)

The Cask Room is, in all respects, a superior evening establishment with great ambiance, superlative customer service, and great wine.

I love the relaxed atmosphere of this place and the fact that it's about fun and chatting and enjoying good wine.  Unlike a restaurant, I feel welcomed to taste a bit and say I like it or I don't like it.  The guy working at the bar was charming and fun and poured some great stuff for us based on what preferences we laid out.

I just take off a star for the paninis... they actually taste DELICIOUS but are like $12 each.  I really think ~$8 would be more reasonable.  If you're willing to shell out the cash, though, I highly recommend the Avignon panini (turkey, raspberry chipotle, and some other stuff) - the chips are great too.

I hear they're starting open-mic nights again soon, which should be fun if you're into that kind of thing :)

I love this place. Discovered it through http://Groupon.com. Mike behind the bar is one of the most knowledgable wine enthusiast I have EVER met! He can tell whats what blindfolded etc! Hes had quite the extensive training and passion for the gig. He asked what we liked, we told him, he came back dead on with exactly what we loved!!! They prices are pretty average. The few food items seemed ok. I only ordered the trio to pair with the wines.

The enivironment was dark and intimate. I definitely loved the couchs and dark feel for wine drinking with the bf. Mike changes and adds to the wine list every week so we will definitely be back to check them out.

This place is great.  I was here on Saturday night with a big group of people for a friend's birthday.  The wine list is plentiful and from what I gathered, ever changing.  They also have as many beers available as they do wine.

The best part of this place isn't the wine, or the beer.  It's the non-pretentious staff and the relaxing "living room" feel to the place. They let us taste whatever wines we wanted, let us make up our own minds about which ones we liked and which ones we didn't, and didn't pass any obvious judgement.

Our group definitely had a blast. It's definitely a place that will be in the rotation.

Tucked away in an unexpected little corner of East Village my honey and I found The Cask Room.  It's dark and sexy in that 1940s Bogie and Bacall kind of way, with sumptuous leather couches and oak wine barrels that add a kick of rustic to this swanky little hideaway.  Add the flicker of warm candlelight and a rosy glow from that heavenly red you've been sipping, and you'll feel like your posing for an In Style lifestyle spread.

Show up on any given Thursday and you'll be treated to some acoustic tunes while you sip, nosh and nibble in their sexy little living room. Make nice with the bartender and he will send over samples of wine, "just because."

Ughh...I'm torn.  I want to rate it better because it's so convenient and close to my house but I just can't; the prices at this place are ridiculous and it overlooks the trolley...awesome.

For the price they charge for wine, take yourself over to Top of the Hyatt and enjoy some real views/atmosphere.

I've been going here a bunch recently and I've really enjoyed it every time I've been. Every wine I've had here has been good if not great. Bartenders always have good recommendations ( especially Daniel ) to the point that I normally end up taking several bottles with me.

People say it's expensive...I guess I don't get that but I'm also not looking for the cheapest place around. I would much rather pay a bit more and be in a relaxing atmosphere. The Cask Room definitely has that. Yes the trolley is right outside but I've barely noticed it. The couches in the back are so comfortable that I don't notice a thing.

The only thing I would ask is that they opened up before 5. I do enjoy some afternoon drinking.

I was exploring my neighborhood and stumbled across this gem. I brought in my book club one month and converted all the women with me to frequent this place.

Tuesday's they have live jazz, nothing obtrusive, just relly mellow atmospheric stuff.

Everytime I go in I am treated like royalty. They insist I try my wine before I order a glass, foist other tastings on my in a really nice way, and make sure to let me know what other wines I might like.

I try to get everyone I know to go there with me (or without me, but that's no fun)

I love Vino, I love ambience, and I have to say I LOVE the Cask Room.  I've trolled many a wine bar/lounge/restaurant around San Diego, most were decent, some were disappointing.  However I've walked into a place I know I will be back again!

Last Friday I re-discovered this location and spent the night enjoying the wine, my company, and the staff/owner!  On a whim I took the advice of a few patrons to try some of their Waterstone Cab, which I'd say was superb.   The place was just COMFORTABLE, it was like the living room i wish I had!  Comfy Couches, impressive decor, and a bathroom that smelled so lovely that I would've stayed in their with my glass of wine (if it weren't empty).  Basically me and my new/old friends enjoyed a couple bottles of wine (the Lo'tengo Malbec was to easy drinking and delicate to the palate!); chatted it up with the owner, and closed the place down!

This place will definitely be frequented by my Vino Friends again and again, I wish all the Wine bars were similar in service and surroundings as this place!

Oh and final note, the fact that the TROLLEY was right in front of the The Cask Room was awesome, if I ever get too much inebriated, I'm jumping on and riding home (Mission Valley)!

This place is great. Whether you would like a random tasting one day or could just like a glass of wine off the beaten path...I highly recommend The Cask Room for a low key night. The staff is very friendly. When it initially opened I was ushered in by the bartender as I was walking by... He recommended the tasting. Obviously, he was very smart in this recommendation because I liked everything I tasted and wanted more!

I recommend this place for a low key night, night with the girls, on a date... You will definitely have a nice time.

We were at The Cask Room on Guitar Hero night. You read that correctly - Guitar Hero night. When we told our server that we'd heard about the place on Yelp, he apologetically let us know that it was only the second such Guitar Hero night in five months.

It didn't bother us, though. Come on! What's better than hearing video game renditions of Metallica and Def Leppard over a nice bottle of pinot noir and delectable munchies? As it turned out, it was the owner, adorned in a Slash-like long black afro wig, who was strumming away in there. I thought it was hilarious.

We ate brie en croute, stuffed mushrooms (I temporarily broke my sans pork stint to eat the sausage that was within these... it was worth it), and chicken skewers. For the life of me, I can't remember the name of the pinot we drank but it was lovely... as were a couple of other reds that we tried. For non-wine drinkers, they also have one bottled beer and Stone IPA on tap.

The decor is lovely, the atmosphere is mellow and romantic, the staff is exceptionally nice, and, most importantly, my company was great. It's the perfect spot for a first date. Then again, I think we might've had a good time anywhere. :-)

My BF and I have been meaning to come here for several months but just never quite made it until this past weekend. Oh how I love thee! Mike, the owner, was very friendly and incredibly knowledgeable. I liked his casual policy of letting you try sample wines before you commit (for those of you who have true commitment issues, you can just get 1/2 glass, too). We sat right at the bar and only intended to have a glass each but ended up ordering a bottle (I paid for that the next day) and enjoyed catting with the other locals. He has an interesting selection of individually selected wines from all over the world and you really can't go wrong with any one of them.

Food selection was actually bigger than what I anticipated (larger selection than Wine Steals) but they are served tapas style. We had the chicken skewers, which sound really boring but were really yummy, especially the caramelized roasted figs. Yum.

We plan on coming back frequently. Oh and they do have free wi-fi if you need to do some work with a glass of wine.

I loved the space. I thought it was really comfortable and warm and the music they were playing really great. I came here to celebrate my birthday and the server was nice enough to offer to change the music to whatever I wanted. Wow!
Points docked for not having any sangria. That was the whole point of going; $10 pitchers of sangria on Sundays. She didn't really clarify whether this particular night was an anomoly or whether they just don't have it some Sundays.
They were really nice to give us a champagne for $20 because they didn't have the one we wanted.
The owner was sweet, and welcoming.

I'll be coming back, especially because they had a wine board game that I want to play :)
