Review from Rob R.
An excellent museum packed to the gills with great Tarheel basketball memorabilia. A must do for any Carolina fan!
The other folks on here have done a great job describing some of the museum's exhibits, but my favorite thing was the court that the museum is laid out on.... very cool!
There are lots of videos and interactive screens. A die-hard fan could probably spend a week in here!
The cherry on top is that the museum is free. Makes it that much harder to give anything but a five-star rating!
Two bits of constructive criticism though:
1. They could do a better job of identifying parking spots for the museum. There a couple metered spaces across the street for museum use.... besides that, I don't know where else there is to park. Parking is notoriously tough on campuses.... and I've seen plenty of tickets handed out. I was glad to finally find those spots and avoid all of that.
2. The main room of the museum doesn't have a natural flow. There's just a bunch of exhibit cases scattered across the court. While it's a great museum with tons of good stuff, it would be easy for you to miss something. I'm sure it would be relatively easy to arrange the display cases to lend a natural flow to the room, guiding the museum goer through the exhibits.
Just two thoughts.... but don't get me wrong!! I really enjoyed my visit and hope to go again!!
Highly recommend!! -

If you bleed a little Carolina blue the Carolina Basketball Museum is a must do! Located right on S. Campus by the Dean Dome, you can get a real taste of the wonderful history know as Tarheel basketball. Inside you'll start off with a 6-minute videography of the Heels before moving on to the three main display rooms. Check out the rings and trophies collected through the years. Chuckle at Tyler Hansbrough's psycho, lucite mask! Gaze on the floor torn up from the 2005 championship in St. Louis. Video kiosks line the museum where you can step back in time and relive the best moments of Carolina basketball (And no, the 2010 NIT tournament will not be part of this display :-)!
And of course, bow down to Michael Jordan's display case, great, great stuff! It includes his uni's, prospect notes from Dean Smith, tips for skills MJ was supposed to work on over the summer and a letter from Coach K wishing Jordan the best after he says no to Duke. My fave...
Admission is free but it's a challenge to get parking here since you're on campus. The walk from the Rams Head parking structure isn't very long and you get to feel like a college student for a bit! The best bet is a handful of metered spaces across the street but you'll need some luck. But as one of the most storied NCAA basketball programs, UNC does this basketball museum right! Stop on by for a little taste of basketball history done in Carolina blue, go Heels go! -

The Carolina Basketball Museum is a brand new facility celebrating the tradition of the University of North Carolina's Basketball team.
This museum was built right next to the Dean Smith Center where Carolina plays all of its home games. Still new, there is a great deal of room to expand. So far the museum has been directed at memorializing the great achievements, traditions, and players to players of Carolina.
The building is open daily and has extended hours on game days. There is much to explore and more to come I'm sure. -

When I first heard that a Basketball Museum was opening near the dean dome and that it was free, I thought, you can't be serious. You see, we are trained to think that anything that is free probably isn't that good. Wrong wrong wrong! I went one of the first days it opened and was delighted to see a very friendly old man working in the opening room, with the opening movie before you enter the museum. (poor guy, he could probably recite that video in his sleep) After finishing the spectacular video, you can enter the museum. There are all sorts of cool artifacts here, including my favorite: A letter from Coach K to Michael Jordan regretting to hear that he will not be attending Duke.
The next two rooms are more special, as they hold ACC titles and such, and the last room, which holds the National Title trophies. I gotta make it back to see that fifth one!
If you are a prospective student or a half-hearted fan, come to the museum and you will be converted into a Tar Heel. There's no way you can't enjoy reveling in the wonders of one of the greatest basketball programs to ever exist.
And hey... you may even get to meet Dean Smith! (see my pictures)
