saturday late afternoon happy hour was awesome at the bye and bye. the main reason for the 4 stars is that i prefer the namesake drink at the sweet hereafter better than the bye and bye - otherwise both are tops in my book. hello mr mason jar!!!!

the food is brilliant - it's been awhile since i had so much fun eating a meatball sandwich and the mister and aunt loved them some bowls. peanut sauce on anything will keep me coming back for more.

the layout and ambiance seemed a bit more comfy and subdued compared to the sweet hereafter - although time of day could have played into that as it wasn't overly loud or crowded anywhere in the place.

i'll go back if i ever need a place to go up on alberta and in NE - however living closer to the sweet hereafter it's easier to pop in there for a mason jar filled lovely adult beverage.

The Bye and Bye makes the best vegan meatball sub I have ever had! It's messy, delicious, and I like that they use Grand Central bread. My boyfriend always orders the Weeping Tiger sandwich and loves the tofu and jalapeño. As for sides, their chili is killer and the broccoli is cooked perfectly.

The atmosphere can sometimes be overwhelming because it can get super busy, but the staff is always friendly and the food comes out quick. Drinks are always poured well and taste great!

Overall, I love coming here and would recommend it to anyone regardless of if you eat meat or not!

Only reason this place doesn't get 5 stars is its only Vegetarian food, and trust me after a couple signature Bye and Bye drinks you want something fried and greasy. I drink nothing but the Bye and Bye when here. Their other drinks are mixed to perfection, but whats the point. BYE and BYE all the way!

I continue to come back here for their - wait for it - vegan meatball sub. SO GOOD! Don't let the vegan bit fool you - I've never had a more delicious meatball sub ANYWHERE, including the real meat variety! Comes with almond cheese and yummy toasted grand central bread. YUM! Wash it down with the Stockholm - citrus vodka and ginger beer - sounds weird, but it's AWESOME. I've tried to replicate it at home but can never get it as good as it is at the Bye and Bye. Highly recommend!

I could definitely see how other people could rate this place higher.  For me, it's just a matter of taste.

The food is pretty good, but I'm not a vegan.  If I were, I'd probably really appreciate it even more.  Still, there are better restaurants for omnivores in the area.

As a bar, it is very dark and quite loud.  If you like that about bars, you'd probably think it seemed cool or atmospheric.  I, on the other hand, wanted to have a conversation over a drink with my friends, and the surroundings made that pretty difficult.

Finally, I thought the staff seemed either disinterested or snotty.  We had been at the bar for about 2 hours, went outside to smoke, and the door guy insisted on seeing our ID's a second time when we had been sitting right next to the door.  They also glared at us for smoking on the patio.  Sorry?  It is a bar...

I think the Bye and Bye has a target market, and I'm just not a part of it.  I'm too old or too uncool or too...working class.  I'll stick to bars with lights and grown ups.

I fucking love The Bye & Bye. I also love that it's in my 'hood so that I can walk home after drinking too many Mason jar drinks. I mean, not that I would do that, but.

Their vegan rice/tofu bowls are delicious! I had some friends visiting from out of town and we wanted some good late-night food. They are both skeptical of vegan food and LOVED their choices.

Their prices are amazing. Dinner and a drink for $15? Fuck yeah.

This place is popular for a reason. Speaking of popular, it can be loud as hell in there at night. I love going in the afternoon, before it gets crazy busy with the post-work crowd.

I really like this spot lots. It's cozy and down home but also has cool people patronizing so it's definitely down home divey like. Dig me?
They are health conscious and often use agave vs. sugar, which I value. Also the food's all vegan which I think is great. No salmonella scares here!
I like the atmosphere a lot too; good lighting, 2 (not just 1!) bathrooms, several different nooks, a nice seating area out front, and it's pretty spacious. I wind up here often.
They also make really good hot toddies~ tis the season, and use ginger brew vs. ginger ale for their dark & stormys'. Yum.
Oh, and the staff are all pretty, so that's always nice to watch.

I am in love with this place! I'm not a vegetarian, but I love coming here! Good prices, great food and a fun yet relaxing atmosphere!

The food is delicious and you get good sized portions as well! My favorite is the: BBQ Brussels bowl. Step out of your comfort zone and eat some brussels sprouts...you won't be disappointed!  I have tried a few other items and they were all delicious! They have a great beer and cocktail list. My favorite drink is their signature Bye and Bye!! I always have to order it, plus it comes in a mason jar!

Bartenders are always friendly and inviting. That's a big deal for me.

Parking can be a little difficult if you're not lucky enough to get to park in their small parking lot. But this never stops me from coming here.

Go check out The Bye and Bye!

I arrived just a bit after noon on a Saturday, and Bye and Bye had just opened for the day (yup, no other customers in the building). I ordered their Meatball Sub ($8): a Grand Central baguette with veggie meatballs, housemade marinara, and almond-oat cheese. My choice of side: chili! My veggie meatball sub also came with a handful of tortilla chips.

I didn't miss the meat at all. The vegetarian "meatballs" were juicy and delicious, a great proxy for the much more fattening, meaty counterpart. The marinara had a nice sweetness from the tomatoes. When the almond-oat cheese entered the mix, I really felt like I was eating a regular meatball sub here instead of the vegetarian and vegan components. The bread was tough to bite through...I wish I had a softer roll for this one. The ideal bread here would be firm on the outside, but, when toasted, retains that pillowy inside. Unfortunately, I didn't get that here.

The chili was just OK. Not bad on the flavor (and a little kick there), but didn't really wow me. Pretty much an average experience here.

This is a great pub, but the food is lacking. I always enjoy the ambiance. Great drinks and beer. Admittedly, I love meat and wouldn't choose to eat Vegan, which is why they get a 3 star rating rather than a 4. The chips and salsa is disappointing ... it's pretty difficult to go wrong with chips and salsa.

Far and away one of my favorite places to eat/drink in Portland.  The chili pie, eastern bowl, and bbq brussels bowl are like comfort food for me.  Had a good day?  Let's celebrate at the bye & bye!  Had a shit day?  Let's drink at the bye and bye!  I prefer to go during non-peak hours as it tends to get pretty busy.  If you're vegan or gluten-free, this place is great.  If you're not vegan or gluten free, this place is still great (my husband wanted to hate it on principle alone and he loves it too)!

The one and only Bye and Bye!

I do have to say for its dive bar touch, this one sticks out as a pretty fine establishment! Nice servers and bartenders, reasonably priced drinks, and well just plain amazing vegetarian food!

Even if you aren't a diehard vegetarian you'll be surprised how amazing the veggie meatballs are, on a sub or in spaghetti, you will be thoroughly content with the meal.

I'm always in search of great food and great beer selection, Bye and bye doesn't necessarily excel at this which I should know better coming to a dive bar.  BUT! Beer selection is probably more than average, little selection in terms of taps, larger bottle selection of mostly imports that weren't out of the ordinary. But the small tap listings actually had a decent variety for any beer lover.

If you are in need of some hard liquor, you probably have met your match! I've heard and seen these mason jar cocktails, if you really need to get your drink on and money is low in your wallet you've come to the right place.

All and all, highly recommend this place, you can't go wrong!

Almost two years since my first review and our love affair is going strong in the way that I love the Bye and Bye more every day.

I finally reached regular status... I come in, they know what I order, and they know the name on my card. As this is a bar, I may be concerned but the reality is, I am super excited to support this establishment with my very limited hard earned and/or high interest student loan cash.

While I do order the BBQ platter EVERY TIME I go there (see my photo, it is so good... I  could eat it every day!), I have friends and I have shared several things with them including: a grilled cheese sandwich that possessed me to start eating vegan grilled cheese sandwiches on the regular at home that never seem to compare, the spaghetti, the meatball sub, and all of the bowls (both their Brussels and greens are amazing!)

Thanks Bye and Bye, for filling my belly with delicious food and local IPA's.

Random deliciousness - I can't believe this place exists.

With just one night in Portland, my friend and her friends listed off a dizzying list of possible dinning choices.  I believe this may be a foodies dream city.  Still, I was hesitant to go to a Vegan Pub? Really?  Well, ok - let's go.

What a wonderful choice.  The place is hip (way more than me, but I ENJOYED the heck out it).  I ordered the BBQ Brussels Bowl accompanied by a generously poured glass of house white wine.  YUM & YUM!

What a uniquely brilliant place - Great atmosphere (laid-back and hip at the same time), super reasonable (inexpensive) prices, nourishing and delectable!  Just go, have a good time and enjoy the food!

I have to admit I was skeptical when my friend announced we were eating at a Vegan restaurant on a stop in Portland (roadtrip!), but I am on an open minded kick, so I gave it a go. IT WAS AMAZING. Maybe even changed my life a little bit.
I got the frito boat with chili, cheese, and sour cream. the chili was very spicy and some of the tastiest ive ever had. and my tummy didnt hurt afterwards because the sour cream and cheese werent dairy. I also enjoyed the chips and salsa, collared greens, and broccoli. simplicity at its best.
I got the Bye and Bye to drink and it came in a big, frosty mug and was delicious. its a pretty huge drink, i didnt need more than one to fulfill me. Can't particularly remember what all was in it, but it was tasty and got me warm and buzzed :)
im now on a vegan quest! thanks bye and bye.

Beet infused tequilla.  Home made beet infused tequilla.  Home made beet infused tequilla with a picture of someone wearing a ski mask on the label.  Seriously, who does anything respectable with a ski mask on anymore?

I must admit that I wasn't psyched for the vegan food, but I did like what food I did eat.  Everyone was mainly drinking when I got there and I'd already had some dinner, so the drinking commenced.  Their bar was a full one, and full of young Portlandish people of drinking age.  The specialty drinks were good.  I had on with I believe Maker's Mark and ginger beer, which was EXCELLENT.  There were others, and the samples I got were very good.  Portland is a fine place in the summer.

Back to the beet infused tequilla.  If you like beets, and I do, and if you like tequilla, and I do, you might like beet infused tequilla.  We had some in some sort of drink and I also ordered a shot for the table to taste.  It tastes like... beet infused tequilla.  You would think there might be some sort of synergy there, but I didn't taste it.  My suggestion for infusing tequilla with vegetables would be to infuse tequilla with asparagus.  A good medium quality reposado and  asparagus.  That's the ticket, earthy tree huggers.  Beet and tequilla was just OK.

Every time I go to the Bye and Bye, I regret it.  EVERY TIME.  Yea, I know...then stop going you idiot.  After a couple of years of being an infrequent customer, I think I've nailed it down.  It's a glamorous dive.  The space is cool and the lighting is right.  I keep thinking 'it'll be worth it this time'.  The food is forgettable and the bartenders forgo customer service to focus on posture while pouring what I promise you will be a mediocre drink:  crotch thrust+slumped shoulders=HOT (not really).

Love the decor! Especially the back patio with the bamboo and metal sphere accents. Love the outdoor seating.

I had the "bye-and-bye" ...it was a delicious spiked-lemonade-tasting concoction in a mason jar.

I'd love to come back to try the vegan fare!

Yes, it is a little bit hipster... but Portland's hipster scene seems to be a more friendlier bunch than Seattle's.

It was a sad day when I had to say goodbye to The Bye and Bye during my move to San Francisco. This place will always be remembered fondly, and anytime I am back in NE Portland I will come back. I highly recommend My Father's Son to drink, along with a BBQ brussel bowl and a side of collards.

Also, even if you adore meat and would never believe vegan food to be good, you need to taste the food here.

Fabulous little place with a great atmosphere, good-looking tattoed hipsters and killer beats. I sat at a table with a lovely view of the night sky and a cool old church off in the distance.

You go up to the bar to order - all vegan deliciousness - and then sit down with a number. I got the Eastern Bowl (tofu, brown rice, broccoli and peanut sauce)...it was very fresh tasting, however the peanut sauce wasn't as sweet as I like it.

The service was friendly and the food was cheap. I loved the atmosphere so much, I can't wait to bring my friend back here in a couple of days.

Sadly disappointed in this place, since I've heard so much about it.  It always gets good reviews, and I'd heard it's a good place to meet the opposite sex.  (Maybe if you like grungy guys.)  I came here with a single attractive girlfriend of mine and got a frigid and apathetic reception from the door guy and bartender.

Maybe it's the fact that I'm not wearing an old hoodie and don't have 10 tattoos?  You know, I shop at thrift stores too, but I don't buy clothes that don't make me look as if I do.  I don't appreciate the snobby attitude just because I look as if I might actually have a job.

-Gave the guy $10 for my $7 drink.  He keeps it.  Doesn't give me change back.  I tended bar for 10 years, and I've never pulled this.  I'll take this as your sign to me not to come back.

Maybe if I get a neck tattoo and stop combing my hair I'll be "cool" enough for this bar.

So I've only lived in Portland for three weeks, but I've crammed a lot into those three weeks. Our moving pod didn't arrive for a week, so we ate out every meal. One of the highlights was The Bye and Bye.

By far, The Bye and Bye has the most attractive employees I've seen thus far in Portland. And that's saying a lot, because PDX is a sexy town. And they're so nice, to boot!

I had quite a few beers and my BF and I both loved our dinner. Both dishes were amazing. I had the BBQ Dinner Platter which was delicious, but a little spicy for my taste. I'm a baby about spicy food, though.

Big plus for dogs allowed on the front porch. There were a lot of cute pups there.

Here's why they didn't get five stars:

    -The bathrooms were pretty gross.

-No table service and very confusing ordering system at the bar. People were lining up even though there is a sign above the bar stating to NOT form a line. I felt like a douche bag going up to the bar when there was a 10 person deep line, so I decided to just get in line. I hope they can straighten that out.

As others mentioned, it is hipster central, which usually wouldn't bother me, but it also didn't make me feel at home (and I'm no suit n' tie!)

The beer was good; ambience seemed just fine; and the vegan menu seemed delicious, but perhaps a bit on the pricey side.

A-OK : Don't mistake this 3 star rating as a reason not to go, but rather a suggestion to look elsewhere if you only have one night in Portland.

Although the place is a little manicured for a hipster joint, the food is quite good, the drinks cheap and service very friendly. It is indeed one of my favorite bars in Portland.

Don't go there when you are very hungry. When the place is packed it can take a while to get your food. Smokers also take over all the outdoor seats, something unfortunate for non-smokers.

I admit, I docked stars because the smug cyclists and tattooed hipsters got to me after a while. (Fuck You, chumps: I'll wear a polo shirt and dock shoes any time I WANT). And because they forgot about my sandwich order. (But they comped an extra beer, so I'll notch the rating back up). All in all, though, this place is solid.

How can you not give this place anything more than 3 stars when the beer list is amazing, the beats are tight, and the food is scrumptious? One shout out: the Wild Tiger sandwich. Hot sauce, tofu, red onions and other goodness wedged between fresh bread? It was delicious and spicy enough to have me swilling pint after pint. For a bar, this place has a lot going for it.

OMG, hipster heaven! Even though I was dressed nicely, I told my buddy I felt sorely out-of-place here; I agreed with the OP that a 7-tattoo minimum is required to at least feel normal (my two littles ones just don't cut it) and carrying your head a little higher-in-the-air than most is expected.

It's not that I was treated rudely; it's just people that congregate here weren't exactly friendly - cool, if not cold, is more like it.

It is a beautiful space though, which is why I'm giving it three stars instead of two.

So this girl wanders to Southeast side of the city, past 10 pm, looking for good food. Yelp on smart phone helps - vegan bar, what a unique concept. Let's try that.

Girl is stopped at the entrance and has to show ID. That's different, is this dance club as well? Girl is way over 21 so she gets to go in. She orders chili to go and waits. Despite her clearly not fitting in here, nobody looks, nobody makes her feel odd. The guy next to her strikes up casual conversation. The bartender with tattoos all over is the nicest guy ever.

Maybe the SE is not that bad...It was not the first time on this side of the river but it just felt much better.

Oh yeah, and the food was delish!

This is a great bar with a lot of places to sit with your group of friends. The drinks are priced appropriately and the ALL VEGAN MENU seems pretty good. I'd have to try more of their food before giving it 5 Stars however.

If you're into Vegan, or no someone who is, you should go or take them here!

So somewhere in there, i became vegan.

Much of my bar adventures include "contemptuously munching fries." You know, when everyone else has food...and you have fries. And when you're trying to get Barnivore to load on your damn phone so you can tell if that beer is indeed vegan, and and and.

The drinks are all to die for. Be nice, they'll tend to be stronger. The vibe is great...we won't kill you for leather shoes, don't worry.  The food's stellar...i had the Eastern Bowl (mmm, nooch and peanut sauce!) and i had bites of other peoples' stuff. The chips and salsa were tasty for minimal cash.

The beer selection is great, and of course, all vegan.

So...nice folks, good drinks, and a comfy place to hang out. Awwh yeah, two BIG thumbs up for the Bye and Bye.

    This is my favorite bar.

The bartenders are phenomenal. They provide prompt and attentive service, and are genuinely friendly.

I'm not vegan, or even vegetarian, but I love the food here. My favorites include the Weeping Tiger sandwich, the black eyed peas and collard greens bowl, and the grilled cheese (gooey, and delicious vegan cheese? who knew there was such a thing?). Also, their salsa is good too. AND, I like that they season their broccoli with nutritional yeast. NOM NOM NOM.

How have I not reviewed Bye&Bye Yet?

This place is pretty awesome. And here's why:

    1. Good, strong, inexpensive drinks.
    2. Friendly bartenders
    3. Entertaining and lively atmosphere
    4. Fun crowd
    5. Bomb vegan bar food
    6. They serve drinks in large quart-sized mason jars.

What else do you need to know?

I had high hopes for the famous vegan bar of Portland (it used to be the only one in the US, but Seattle has got one now too). Ultimately, it's a cool joint, but not quite the paradise I imagined it to be.

To start, the vibe here is cool. It's casual, the clientele and staff are cool, there's lots of space to move around, and it's not grungy or grimy at all.

The beer selection is good. The food was what I was most interested in, though. I had their "meatball marinara sub" which was french bread stuffed with homemade vegan sausage and a herb-filled tomato sauce.

It was tasty. But not the best I've ever had (Pizza Luce in the Twin Cities makes a better vegan meatball sub).

The menu didn't have much else that stood out to me. The options were pretty limited, actually. Given that this is a bar that serves food, as opposed to a restaurant that serves alcohol, I guess it's to be expected.

Bye and Bye is a decent, solid spot. Now I just need to try the vegan bar in Seattle.

While we didn't spend much time at The Bye and Bye, and we sat outside (and were the only ones there), they had a great drink selection and an even better happy hour. And I love a vegan bar, so next time I'll have to give the food a try, since I love, love, love the food at the Sweet Hereafter.
