This is an amazing store. I was blown away by the selection, and from what I saw, the prices were very fair. I could have been there all day perusing the vintage buttons alone.
I can kind of understand why some may complain of the lack of warmth, but I found the woman working there to be extremely professional, friendly and helpful. Plus the way the store is set up takes me back to those old-school department stores. I dig it, but you can't please everyone.
And anyway, you're going there to buy buttons, not make new friends.
This is THE place to go if you want unique, original vintage antique buttons and are not afraid to pay a pretty penny for them. This is not the place to go if you want your run-of-the-mill penny-pincher buttons. If that's what you're looking for, look elsewhere.
After spending at least an hour at Mood (assuming they had one of the best, most fashionable button selections around), I was happy to find the Button Store. The lady there helped me match a set of original, unused 1920s gold buttons from France to complement my coat and make it look truly one of a kind. She has a very good eye for style and I didn't need to spell out everything I wanted the coat to look like... she got it, and she quickly found every button in their inventory to help me achieve a stylish, vintage, and classy look.
And the selection... oooh the selection! Their vintage (non-production) buttons are simply gorgeous. Just beautiful. I've never had a thing for buttons, but after coming here, I am tempted to find other excuses to use a pretty vintage button!
Oh my golly gosh, I wanna marry the button store and have beeeeaauuutiful vintage dress babies with it!!
It's always been a fave past time of mine to find vintage dresses in the 50's to late 70's range, have them altered to fit me like a glove and then add some sort of personal element of style to it. The best way to achieve this is by adding cool looking buttons and the button store is the promised land.
Good grief, I came in here and looked around and was seriously salivating. That may seem weird to you non-buttonophiles, but trust me on this, they have the most killer selection I've ever seen. So eff Joann's or whatever Holly Hobby sewing store you patron and stop in here for the accessorizing gold! You will NOT be disappointed!
Thanks Valentina for the awesome recommendation! I can't believe it took me so long to finally get my button lovin' butt in here!
Hmm. I'm in the minority here, so I should preface this by saying I've only stopped in The Button Store once. But I'm not in a huge hurry to go back, either.
It's nice to have a button store in LA, but I confess to being fairly disappointed with this place. It definitely does have a better selection of buttons than a typical chain fabric store if you're just looking to jazz up a sweater you already have, or if you're making something pretty basic. The amount of stock in more unusual buttons is sort of low, however, and definitely on the pricier side for both the plain and fancy varieties.
Here's the thing--there are much more unusual buttons and often less expensive buttons to be had by going to estate sales or going to antique shops or by just going on eBay. Most importantly, I was a little turned off by the very business-like, not-so-welcoming feeling of the couple who kept emerging from the back room.
Price-wise, I get that there's rent to be paid in WeHo and all. A place that specializes in something as delightfully old-fashioned as buttons really needs a little bit of warmth and personality, however, especially if your shop is a pretty good place--but not the best place--to get them.
Let's put it this way: my experience at the Button Store was so good, that I didn't key the piggish Hummer that totally blocked my little Black Betty in the back lot. That, and the fact that I think the pretentious slouch-jeaned creep who did it would have figured out it was me. He did apologize, a little bit, but didn't detect the irony when I said "It's always a proud moment for me when I have to go our of my way for a Humvee."
But back to the Button Store. Can we hear it for the Button Store? Picture this: a tidy, bright little shop on Third, kind of old-fashioned in a good way, but super well-organized. The buttons are exquisite. I had just lost a beautiful button on one of my favorite dresses (blue gray asymmetrical sheath with an asymmetrical collar...very chic, very Parisian). Not only did the Button Store have one of those buttons (turns out the designer had purchased them from the owner!) but the sweet, sweet lady (who called me "darling" and "my dear") guided me immediately to the PERFECT button to use as a "top" button (and I'd shift the existing top button to the missing space) so that now the dress looks even more unique and "50s chic meets Vivienne Westwood and they have a very sophisticated yet punky baby."
I looked around and swore to come back for all my button needs. Really, girls and boys, the right buttons can make or break an outfit. If you're hankering for some stylish originality, go get your button freak on in this charming little store that's right out of a pretty Parisian arrondissement.
They've got what you need, period. The couple that owns the place are very attentive and helpful, which made my experience easy and quick since I came in knowing exactly what I wanted. I left with the large modern silver buttons I envisioned in my head and for a reasonable price.
Given that the store focuses exclusively on buttons they have things you're just never going too find elsewhere unless you have endless amounts of time for a search.
You want buttons?? They GOT buttons!
The Button Store is a one-stop-shop if it's buttons your yearn for!
They boasts an incredible amount of buttons: all shapes, sizes, colors, textures, fabrics etc.. I must say their vintage button stock WILL blow you away.
The owner and his wife are really sweet and you can tell they put their heart and buttons into this gem of a shop.
I love mid-century design. Unfortunately, 50-year-old coats often have cruddy 50-year-old buttons. This store has a huge selection of buttons of all materials and styles, perfect to add a modern - or retro, as the case may be - twist to a vintage find. Add in an interesting fabric from F&S, and your eBay disappointment becomes a new piece that will be sure to set you apart from the be-Juicyed masses.
a great place to find a wide variety of buttons, from the very basic to vintage and unusual. my friend and i were quite impressed with the selection and the layout was easy to navigate, with most of the buttons organized by color. the woman in the shop was very helpful but let us do our browsing in peace after pointing out some things we might be interested in based on what we told her we were making. we did feel a little strange at one point because the woman asked us if we were going to be done soon so that she could go to lunch. i felt a bit hurried after that but then her husband (i think) came into the shop and stuck around while she went to lunch. i found some really nice buttons (not cheap but worth it) and can't wait to go back. all in all very positive experience and we are definitely planning on coming back.
