6 reviews for The Buffalo Zoo
The Buffalo Zoo is a great place to take the kids to get them out of the house and burn up some energy. The new rain forest exhibit is a really neat addition and the best part is it's an indoor exhibit, so it shouldn't be affected by the weather.
Watch out for the seagulls if you plan on eating outside. We saw several people have their food stolen right in front of them. The kids loved it, but it probably won't be funny if it happens to you.
The zoo has always been clean and tidy for all of our visits, and the staff have always been friendly and informative.
If you intend to visit the Zoo more than 2-3 times it is well worth it to get a family membership.

The Buffalo Zoo is continually going downhill. I am not impressed with this place at all. It is expensive to get in, food prices are rediculous, and to be honest, the poor animals are living in very poor conditions. The cages are small, unkempt and the animals look very depressed. I think that if people would've allowed it, the zoo would've been better off down near the waterfront, but then a lot of Buffaloneans tend to stick there heels in when it comes to change, even when it's better for all.
This place seriously needs a HUGE upgrade.

The Buffalo Zoo (the third oldest zoo in the country) is open to visitors year-round. Right now, it's cold. If it's too cold to stay outdoors for long, consider hanging out in the reptile exhibit. There's a bench for you, and you can watch your kid's reactions to the snakes, alligators, and the like while taking a breather.
Summer months at the zoo (but not when it's too too hot) are great, but be careful of the bees buzzing around the bear exhibits. You can take some time to amble throughout the place, and stop here and there for a cool drink or to let the kids chill in the playground or dig for 'dinosaur bones' in the sandy boneyard pit.
Admission fees vary by age, but purchasing a zoo membership is one of the best deals around (we get the Family Plus membership, for $80 yearly). If your child poops out--or gets cold--after an hour or so, you won't be disappointed, since you can come back anytime. If you buy a membership, you get all sorts of vouchers for free parking, free carousel and train rides, and an extra guest or two per visit. It's a good deal.
The zoo is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in the fall and winter, and is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays in January and February.
The zoo really has so much to offer, and even though I write this in the viewpoint of a parent of a small child, I think it's a place for all ages. The website will tell you what special events are going on now: http://www.buffalozoo.org

The Buffalo Zoo is a nice asset for the Buffalo area, and definitely a great place to bring the family for some quality time and educational fun. The zoo is fairly good-sized, with animals from almost every region around the world.
Unfortunately my boyfriend and I picked today to visit the zoo. It's the nicest day of the year so far, and it's also the last day of Spring Break for most kids under 18 in the WNY area. We sat in traffic for about a half-hour waiting to get from Colvin Blvd to Parkside, and finally into the parking lot. When we finally did make it to the parking lot, the attendant said that the lot was full, but we could try and find a spot if we would like. Thankfully we scored a nice spot, so all the waiting was sort of worth it.
After we made it to a parking space and up to the entrance to get in, we still had a hurdle to cross. The credit card machines were slowing down because they had so many people using them at once. Really, in this day and age? Come on! Thankfully our transaction went through and we were finally able to get in and enjoy the zoo.
The zoo was fairly clean considering all of the children and families there that day. There weren't a lot of animals in the outdoor exhibits (probably because the weather was still a bit brisk), but the indoor exhibits pretty much made up for it. The giraffe house was closed to the public due to renovations, but the giraffes weren't outside either, which was a huge disappointment.
The trip to the zoo was a nice way to spend the afternoon. If you decide to go, make sure you go on an "off peak" day and time to get the maximum enjoyment out of this experience.
It's small but they have a lot of good animals. It's a little sad but isn't that all zoos? I like going to the park and seeing the animals from the outside of the zoo.
The Buffalo Zoo is undergoing some extensive remodeling right now, and they've done a great job updating the exhibits, some of which date from the early twentieth century- it is the second oldest zoo in the country.
The polar bears make me sad- I wish they had a better space, but at the same rate I feel glad to think that we can see these amazing animals in our own backyard. There's a good staff there that does take good care of the animals.
I love the zoo, and really can't wait to see all the great improvements that they put into it.
