4 reviews for The Brothers Moon
I have to be honest, although I live in Hopewell, I rarely get into the Boro, mostly because it's not a convenient way for me to get home from work. That being said, today I had a forced day off from work being I was recovering from a medical procedure. I had doctors orders to take it easy but after a day or two home was feeling like I had to get out.
Anyway, back to the review... my husband and I decided to venture into Brothers Moon for a mid day meal and we had a very nice experience. We sat outside (which was a bit louder than I like because of motorcycles) and our waiter was wonderful. I had the quiche and my husband had a sandwich, both of which were very tasty. The fresh baked bread was also a treat. We will definitely go back for dinner and we have already recommended the restaurant to some family who have never been there.
My date and I spotted this place earlier driving through the area. It was our first time in the area, and it looked like a nice place with outside seating. There was also a sign out front that said "Eat here, PLEASE" so we felt they must be hurting from the economy and decided to give it a try. It was early evening/late afternoon, and it wasn't crowded at all. After eating here, I don't think it is the economy that was their problem.
The previous reviewers description of "underwhelmed" was spot on. The place looked like it was going to be great. I ordered a risotto. It was very watery and extremely salty. My date had the gnocchi, which looked and tasted like soggy bread. The salad we had was okay.
The staff was very attentive, and we were also offered an amuse-bouche. However I felt like I paid $30 for a bowl of soup with some rice in it (my risotto). At that price level, there are much better options in the area. I would not go again.
So so meal at pretty high prices. Nice display of local and organics. Service was underwhelming, slow, and not informative.
I feel guilty giving these guys only three stars because they try very hard and because the front of the restaurant is beautifully decorated. On the other hand, I was underwhelmed by what I was served: a vinaigrette salad with organic mixed greens, a morel and asparagus risotto, and a very sweet apple streusel with mixed berries and a small quantity of intense ice cream. This sounds pretty good, actually -- talk about jaded palates! Perhaps the real problem is that I was with a group of 35 people. We had half the restaurant, and the other half was full as well. The kitchen staff must have been in up to their necks!
If I lived in the area, I would give this place another chance. The diners outside our group seemed like a happy bunch. They probably were especially happy about the fact that the establishment has no liquor license, so people are forced to bring in their own wines! As you come in from the street, there's a deli counter to the left with prepared foods of all kinds. This looked interesting to me, and I'd certainly come by a few times if I lived in the area.
A minor detail: Our group was served "passed hors d'oeuvres" after we arrived but before we sat down to our meal. The people who proffer such things normally offer paper napkins along with the snacks. None were in sight. Most people who eat a tartine with smoked salmon and celery remoulade while talking with their friends find the need to wipe their hands or mouths when they're done. No way to wipe, so I was very careful and stayed clean.
