Dog Friendly at tables outside! Fantastic breakfast and lunch here-fresh, delicious food and great service. Doreen (chef and owner) is the best! We always feel so welcome and have had wonderful meals--like home cooking for us! Doreen can give wonderful recommendations for local vet, rentals, etc...not to be missed on a trip to New London!

The Broken Yolk is a solid option those looking for a New London breakfast place with character (and characters). This cozy, 4-boothed hole-in-the-wall down the street from Mitchell College cooks up (mostly) delicious daily specials served with an attitude.

The chef/co-owner is always having a blast -greeting customers young and old while she slings hash, biscuits 'n' gravy, and other breakfast staples -- occasionally firing tiny marshmallows at customers. She solicits feedback and seeks to improve.

BUT, service can make or break a dining experience, and service here, like the yolk, is broken. A good server could easily handle the entire counter and 4 tables alone, but somehow 3 servers can't manage to make this an enjoyable experience.  We've been here twice and each time the service was slow, inattentive, and had little attention to detail. We waited for nearly 10 minutes just to get a cup of coffee, our orders were filled incorrectly, and the servers never checked back to see if everything was alright, much less top off our joe.

As good as the food is, the service is downright dreadful.

Delicious food?  Absolutely!  Friendly staff?  Very much so!  A marshmallow firing bow?  What kitchen would be complete without one?

I discovered this place from the other Yelpers and was very pleased with my meals on both of my trips there.  I've only had breakfasty type items (The cranberry walnut toast is very tasty!) so far but their lunch options looked and smelled good too!

This place is less than 10 minutes away from the New London ferry so it's become a staple for me when I'm catching a boat there.

My boyfriend and I traded meals. My sausage and egg sandwich on a bagel was the greasiest monstrosity I'd ever seen. My boyfriend gladly took it off my hands and I had his stuffed croissant. That was totally delicious and surpassed expectations. Staff are friendly and the place is dog friendly. Staff do seem a bit out of it. Don't expect to see anyone come back in between bringing you food and the check. The servers also just seem in general a little out of it. The cook ? owner was sling shooting marshmallows and blueberries out the kitchen window at her Friends. Seemed like a friendly and strange bunch.

I am a big fan of local breakfast places and where ever I go, I try to find one that is frequented by locals.  Yelp has helped since I got my Iphone and installed the app.  After a night at Foxwoods, I found the Broken Yolk listed, read some of the reviews, it sounded good, so off we went.

First of all, everybody who complained about the service I say...LIGHTEN UP FRANCES.  Maybe it was your personality of maybe you thought you were in some fast food joint where everything is precooked.  Everything was cooked to order. Now, I did go in March 2011, but it was on a Sunday about 10:30 AM.  They were busy, but the wait staff was VERY friendly.

There is a huge U shaped counter that was very crowded.  There are only 4 older booths, but we were lucky enough to score one.

Brittany was our waitress.  She welcomed us with a big smile and wished us a good morning.  When she found out it was our first visit, returned with our coffee and a "sampler dish with a piece of pancake (didn't even need syrup), some corned beef hash (YUMMY), turkey and home fries.

I had read that the portions were huge so we split an omelet filled with spinach, feta cheese and avocado.  We asked for the home fries to be well done (we always do that,,,like them crispy).  The breakfast was great, very tasty and just the right amount of "greasy" (hey, it is a hole in the wall type of place, if you want gourmet, then this is not for you).  We had ordered rye toast, and we were also given two slices of Cranberry Nut Toast (WOW)...(would have not ordered the rye if I had known).

Our coffee cup never got below half empty.  A waitress was always there filling it up (Steve Buschemi from Reservoir Dogs might have even left a tip) and asking if all was good and if we needed anything else.

As I got up to pay, I talked with Doreen who was manning the grill with a big grin and a cowgirl hat.  She knew we were the "newbies" and asked if every thing had been good.  I said that the place and food were great and would come back the next time I was in the area.  She asked if we had tried the sausage in gravy.   When I told her no, she promptly filled a sampler cup with it and handed it to me.  I was stuffed from the breakfast and all of the other samples, but I tried it anyway.  I am glad I did.  It was not the usual white gravy, but instead a creamy brown gravy that complemented the pieces of sausage perfectly.  Now I was really stuffed, but walked away with a smile and got back in my car for the long drive back to NY.

BTW, I have used YELP all over this great country and have never been disappointed by the places that it has pointed me to.

This is my favourite place ever! My friend and I go here every Tuesday morning, no matter what. The food is out of this world!!! And the staff is like family at this point.

On our first visit, we were greeted by joyous laughter and joking with the other patrons (and soon with us), amazing food (as it always is) and and a reasonable bill.

Sunday mornings can be super busy and you will wait for your food, but it's worth it. That being said, we tend to avoid Sundays.

If I know I'm waking up in a different city than my own, I spend some time on Yelp before I go there to decide where I'll eat while I'm there.

The Broken Yolk had 3 stars. I read things like "greasy" and "cheap" and knew that after a long night at Mohegan, we'd need a seriously greasy breakfast to get our motivation for the 90 minute ride back to Boston.

We walked in and I swear, every single person stared at us like we didn't belong. Whatever. We got seats at the counter and got our coffee and I ordered the Eggs Benedict and he ordered an omelet. We read the Sunday comics while waiting to eat and marveled at how disorganized this place seemed to be.

Out of the corner of my eye.. ah yes. There's my Benedict. My perfect sauceless Benedict waiting for it's hollandaise. I see the waitress take the top off the warm hollandaise and stick a ladle down into it. She dumped it onto the Benedict. Oh yes.. that's the stuff. It's a little too much sauce, but oh well. It's fine. Oh wait - hold on, she's going back in for ANOTHER LADLE FULL? NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The b*tch ruined the Benedict I had been waiting more than 20 minutes to eat. When I'm talking "ladle full", I'm talking like a full cup of hollandaise. Now imagine 2 full cups of sauce of those on top of breakfast on a standard diner plate.

She served it to me and I knew I couldn't wait for another order. It looked disgusting. All you could see was yellow.

I asked for a clean plate and then proceeded to take both pieces of the Benedict off that plate and move it to the next (while scraping off as much sauce as I could) and then saved a few of the breakfast potatoes from drowning and transferred them onto the new plate. At one point, she brought me an additional poached egg sans sauce (why? I don't know) and I switched that one in for the one dripping in hollandaise. I did a decent job in salvaging the breakfast... but it taught me a lesson. In diners... I will now order the hollandaise on the side.

He loved his omelette... breakfast was still good (and cheap).. so yeah, I'd go back here again next time we were going to Mohegan, but I'd make sure to order the sauce on the side.

The Broken Yolk is oddly nestled in a primarily residential area in New London's Fifth District, right near the water. I worked nearby at a local theater during the past two summers, and breakfasts on the Broken Yolk were a summer staple, due to the ample outdoor seating.

The food is of the typical, diner-esque breakfast variety - the omelettes are particularly stand-out, and I'm also a big fan of the homefries. The only downside to this is the service - it doesn't matter if you're outside, at the counter, or in a booth. Don't go to the Broken Yolk for a quick breakfast stop, because you're bond to become irritated. It is, however, the ideal place for a leisurely mid-morning meal.

This is a great place for a leisurely breakfast. The staff is a little befuddled, I admit, but they've got gobs of friendliness to make up for it. I was working in Waterford, CT for a month, and made several trips for filling breakfasts.

They've got the usual breakfast fare, along with some solid specials. The shirred eggs are pretty good as is the stuffed croissant. The omelets I sampled weren't too bad, but they were more like scrambles with bits of yum in them than they were like delicate, neatly folded, soft omelettes.

Plus, for those other vegs out there, they serve soy sausage links just for the hell of it. It's pretty awesome.

I had a great Sunday Brunch experience at this place, one rainy, hungover summer morning.

Get one of their enormous custom omelets. I got a 3-egger (shush, I was hungry) with American cheese, bacon, and salmon. My friends make fun of me to this day for the odd concoction but it was, no joke, the best omelet I've ever had in my life. And, it was like eight bucks!

The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because a good friend of mine told me he once went to try and grab brunch, and was ignored for twenty minutes before finally getting up and leaving. It was crowded and frantic enough during my experience that I can see where this would happen. Really unfortunate, but I'd say, check it out anyway, if you're willing to be a little patient.

To experience joy in life, it is imperative that I find a good breakfast establishment.  The Broken Yolk fits the bill.  Not only does it have all the standards, it has a quirky atmosphere, friendly wait/cook staff, and is within walking distance of my home.  Hallelujah!

The picnic tables outside are your best bet (at least during the summer) because the inside can get hot as all get out.  I love the fact that the outdoor seating is almost family style.  It definitely provides the friendliest atmosphere I've found in New England.

Noe and I happened upon the Broken Yolk during the fall of 2007, when we had first moved to Connecticut. We used to get up early and go walking every morning (a habit we could probably use to start again). The Broken Yolk occupies a very unassuming position in the middle of our residential neighborhood. It looks like a yellow house until you get close enough to see the signs.

After walking past it every day for a couple months, curiosity got the best of us one weekend and we decided to walk down for breakfast.

The Yolk is very small inside. There's the grill and dish area (calling it a kitchen seems to imply that it is its own room, which it isn't) surrounded on three sides by a counter and stools and then four or five four-person booths along the back wall. There's nothing fancy about the interior - the walls could probably use a paint job and the booths are not exactly what I would call comfortable - but it's a diner. Who's looking for fanciness?

The coffee is strictly diner-grade: think of that weirdly strong yet somewhat watery cooked-down variety that you used to find in gas stations before they all went "gourmet." But the food...

Noe normally gets an omelet with two or three different things in it. The Yolk's three-egg omelets are pretty sizable, and they pack them with the selected fillings. Bacon, tomato and cheddar is always a good pick; as is standard ham and cheese. They have a good selection of meats and veggies to choose from, including soy sausage for those who want protein of the non-flesh variety.

I usually alternate between the same two menu items. Number one is the two-egg breakfast, a classic diner combo of two eggs any way you like them (I prefer over-medium); two pieces of toast; bacon, ham, or sausage; and - last but not least - the fantastic Broken Yolk potatoes, which accompany almost anything on the menu. The perfectly seasoned potatoes are always cooked to perfection - firm enough to bite into, but soft enough to melt in your mouth. Even though I can almost never finish my portion, I consider the potatoes an integral part of a Broken Yolk breakfast.

My other staple from the Breakfast Menu - when I'm feeling more decadent - is Eggs Benedict. I am an Eggs Benedict junkie and have ordered them in numerous restaurants and have tasted a number of creative variations. The Broken Yolk version is the classic - two poached eggs served over Canadian bacon on a split and tasted English muffin, all smothered with Hollandaise sauce. The Yolk's rich, buttery Hollandaise is the perfect consistency, and there's enough of the velvety sauce to cover and dip the rest of the dish in without it being smothered and overpowered. (However, there is nothing the Broken Yolk can do to prevent the immense guilt factor that comes with eating anything smothered in Hollandaise sauce - you can feel the calories adding up, I swear.)

I have actually never ordered any of what I refer to as the "carb-based breakfasts" - waffles, French toast, pancakes - because I really enjoy my egg-based breakfasts. However, our good friend Brian Samas, a Broken Yolk enthusiast and amateur photographer (he took some of these great Broken Yolk pictures) has ordered just about every special the Yolk has ever offered - I'd ask him if you need an opinion.

Service at the Yolk can be a bit spotty - it's generally one or two waitresses running the show, the grill is pretty small, and the restaurant can get packed with the after-church crowd on weekends. Everyone I have dealt with there has been friendly, but I wouldn't recommend going to the Yolk if you're in a hurry.

But if you're ever in the Ocean Beach neighborhood of New London and you're looking for a good, classic breakfast to be enjoyed at leisure, check out the Broken Yolk. You can view the restuarant and menu here: http://brokenyolkcafe.net/.

Yelp came through again when we searched for a breakfast place near Groton.   The atmosphere at this place sets it apart from other diners.  The people outside were regularly pelted by the cook with potatoes, water, and marshmallows launched from a special toy gun.  We had fun with it and I think most people will also. Our waitress was very attentive. My Greek omelet was tasty but we had to send back some undercooked pancakes.  They were literally raw and after sending them back the cook told us we needed to specify they be cooked 'well done'!  That's a first in my pancake-scarfing career, maybe it's a New London thing.  We payed for that with a good-natured squirt gun blast later on.  After paying we chatted with the cook/sniper until she tried to chase me with the marshmallow gun.  I was too fast for her, so my fiance took the shot.   I'll be back if I'm ever in the area again, it was fun and tasty.

This restaurant has fantastic food. It's a great place for a delicious breakfast, cooked to order, with high quality/fresh ingredients.  The homefries (extra crispy) are some of the best, and the homemade bread is extremely desirable.

Although I am a huge fan of this food in regards to breakfast and brunch, my only complaint about this restaurant is the wait staff.  They are very friendly, but sometimes a little inappropriate, especially in regards to their personal conversations, and their handling of the food.

The Broken Yolk is ideal for young diners, because the waitresses and cooks never hesitate in making extra special orders for them as well as  entertaining kids while their parents eat!

Gross. It is supposed to have a small town feel-- but its just dirty and cheap. I did not see the people cooking my food wearing any sort of hair nets/ gloves and they never cleaned the grill-- which is okay if you want everything you get to taste the same-- but is really gross if you order scramble eggs and get them with all sorts of crunchy mystery pieces from others customers orders.

I would NEVER go here again.

Consistently mediocre to very tasty food. Generally spotty waitstaff and usually a bit quirky. Stick with the basics--omelets, oatmeal and pancakes. Sometimes you find stray things in your dish...a lone green pepper, a slice of banana in your pancake or some bacon in your omelet. You will emerge smelling like grilled food and full.

I have eaten at this establishment many times over the past 5 years.  Under the previous owner it was amazing.  Techno was thumping in the mornings, portions were huge, and a steady stream of clientèle made it into a place to start your day.

Under the new owner, the portions have gotten much much smaller, the costs have gone up, and the music is just bad.  Food is also bland.  The place also lost its energy.  Difficult to describe but you can definitely feel it.

In a pinch I will go there for breakfast, but there are many other new places in town to have great meal with less cost.

This place was a blast.  The food was very good. For such a small establishment, I was surprised at the variety of their fare.  The cranberry, walnut bread was fabulous.  Portions are large and delicious. They fill every inch of the plate.  I'm not a fan of hot spicy items, but their beans had just enough heat to counteract the molasses without overwhelming it.  Each flavor shined in its own right.  What a treat!  The staff is wonderful.  They are helpful, charming, spontaneous and very friendly.  It was a wonderful adventure. I definitely will go back when I am in the area.

Pretty good little "hole in the wall" very small very tight but food is pretty good. Homefries are nothing to brag about but everything else was typical diner style breakfast foods made right in front of you on the flattop griddle. Coffee it normal diner coffee with bottomless refills. Tea is a big basket with all different teas to try vs. the typical plain liptons tea most places serve. If your around New London it's a pretty good place i would visit again if in the area that's for sure.

This place deserves 0 stars as we received 0 food on this Sunday morning.  Got there about 10:30 and waited until noon for 2 omelettes and a kid's order of french toast.  When I asked our waitress why it was taking so long, the only apology she offered was that they were really busy.  Unfortunately for her, I could see the greasy ponytailed guy sitting across from us had walked in 5 minutes ago and received his food.  Instead of offering to comp or rush our order, she informed us that we were 3 orders behind our food being fired.  This was after my daughter had patiently watched 3 episodes of Blue's Clues.  I wouldn't be surprised if some of these other reviewers either went there on a weekday at 7 am or actually work there.  Much better and FASTER service at Monica's on State Street.  No flys there either.  DO NOT GO HERE
