Feels like you walked into the set of Black Dynamite. it was rad. Very chill, we missed all of the happy hour deals, but got 10% off food and drinks because we were entered in a tournament. The food was okay, got a bbq burger and garlic fries. For a frozen patty, it was not bad. The garlic fries were just regular fries.
And lesson learned, at a bar, never get mixed drinks. stick with the beer.
Oh, and the pool? The tables are meh? pockets are tighter and cloth isnt very smooth. Very nice regulars here. :] -

Didn't come here for food, only pool.
The pool hall is chill, the servers are chill, and the people that come here were pretty chill. Pool prices were regular ($13/hr or so).
I saw that they have special half-off nights like Wednesday Ladies Night or Thursday College Night (must check out).
Cool place to hang out and shoot some pool. There are plenty of tables and plenty of room. The guy that was closing the night we went was chill, he kept giving us warnings that they'll be closing and we should finish up our game but we were being douche bags and sneaked another game in. He didn't make a big fuss about it. He just nicely asked us to finish up asap because they were closing.Listed in: Bar Hoppin'

Pretty chill and cool place!
Sundays are half off pool, which means $6/hr. Usually it's $12/hr. Same goes to weekdays 11:30-3.
Wednesdays after 6PM are Ladiesss night! We asked the bartender "Ladies night? What does that mean, like has to be all girls? Or is one chick and 12 other guys coo too?" Haha and apparently having one girl is good enough! Yeah Girl Power!! Hey shut up spice girls are still cool !!
And Thursdays after 6PM are student nights so bring yo school ID!
I got a screwdriver which was only $4! Nice. Pretty cheap on drinks. Happy hour Mon-Thurs 5-7, Fri 4-7. 12 beers on tap, $3 a pint. $1 off wine and drinks. I like pool halls with full bars. Play for drinks!
Only thing I didn't like was when it would get quiet because nobody put money in the jukebox. It gets so awkward and boring when it's just pool without music. Which I guess we can just put money in since they have all these deals on pool and drinks, but there's still the hassle of having to go there, put money in, pick a song, come back to the table. You don't see people going to clubs and picking a song a DJ to play and then going back to the dance floor to dance. We just wanna play, drink, and have fun! lol.
But anyway, yeah there's plenty of pool tables to play on, full bar, some music, chill place. Have fun shootin!Listed in: Bay Area Nightlife, Pool Halls in the Bay Area

Worst head manager ever. ( short asian dude, I wondered why the waitress was scared to serve us)
Long story short, I paid money for my pitcher at 12:45pm and the head manager comes up to us at 12:55pm and took away all our beer. He never gave us a heads up "like finish up your beer" but dude goes Gangsta and takes away our pitcher. WTF why sell me the pitcher?! /rage!!! (give me back my money!!)
Well if you enjoy beer and a nice game of pool, this is not the place. Beware this head manager will sink this nice place to the bottom of ocean. -

Stay away from this place! The staff doesn't know what it means to get return business. The clientele is labeled "Bones Thugz and no Harmony".
Prices for beer, mixed drinks, and tables are unrealistic and not as advertised. I would much rather drive all the way to SF then to walk into this place again. -

The Ladies Night poster says it all. Talk about irony, pregnant ladies with pool cues advertising happy hour drink specials!

I wished they served food later.. the kitchen closes at 11pm.
This place is pretty chill.. the waitresses are really attentive and comes by often to refill your drinks.
On a Friday night, there's a small wait to get a table.. but they have a bar there to get you started.
There's a smoking room? WHERE?! -

Very late review and after reading some of the other reviews, it makes me want to go back and see what's up!
I reserved the private room for an afternoon birthday celebration a few years back. I believe it was for 2 hours? Also ordered appetizers, chicken, veggies and chips & salsa, I believe. Ran out of salsa and the chips looked like they were from the bottom of the bag.
It had music piped in, but was given OK to bring my own boom box. Also brought my own cupcake stand and treats.
The room was comfy with couches, stools and a table.
The 8 of us enjoyed 'playing' pool, even though we didn't know what we were doing. :)
From what I remember, we all ordered mixed drinks and they were fine.
Only real complaint were the chips & a misquote on the price, which was corrected, no problem. -

This place is a hidden gem regardless of whether you want to play pool or not. It's just a great place to hang with a few friends and have a beer. It's active without being crowded. They carry a great selection of draft, imports, local and domestic beers too. Aside from that, the food here is surprisingly decent (for bar food). If you're in the area and looking for a cool, safe bar to hang out at, this is it.

I come here to basically watch televised sports games (as we are TV-less at home) and drink beers with my boyfriend. It's really close to his school, so we'll meet up after his night classes. We've hit up the pool tables once or twice and they have great happy hour prices. A-OK.

I am a big billiard's fan. I worked at a pool hall for about a year and before that I discovered that I really enjoyed playing.
I heard about this place from one of our regulars; he said that it was worth a gander.
and I kept that in mind for a gooood while before I ever got around to trying it out. it wasn't until I moved to Alameda a few months ago that I figured it was about time to pick up a pool cue again. so my boyfriend and I decided we would go to Broken Rack.
I was not disappointed. the place is spacious and the tables are well-kept. the cues are in pretty good condition-- most of them were usable. the crowd is something different-- no rowdiness. people are paying attention to their own game and drinks and food-- you don't have to worry about people staring at you and watching you play.
there's food and a full bar, so partake in that. but if you want food, I suggest you eat before you play... lol; grease is not really good for the table. :P anyway. the food is actually rather good and the drinks are.. well, drinks. they make excellent white russians and bloody marys. (:
oh yah. the music is terrible because it comes from a jukebox. lol; don't expect to hear anything you can dance to. but at least they always play the sports games on the flatscreens. :D -

Love the Broken Rack! This is where I take my prey and spin my spider web and see if they got good game. If not, I can run home. If so, they might get invited back to the penthouse. And if I get too tipsy off their Cabo Wabo margaritas, I can stumble home.
My first victim was hot, had good game and paid for everything. Score. My second victim was cute, had minimal game and asked to split the bill. Boring. My third victim was meh and stuck me with the $45 bill. A game on Friday night will cost ya $15 an hour and the waitress will gladly take your drink order at your table, so watch your pool shark and the clock, to avoid running up a hefty tab.
The Rack features a large venue with couches, stools, big screen tv's, bar area, dining area, smoking room, foosball, and nearly 30 pool tables.
Good beer on tap and stiff drinks!
The music always has me shaking my booty and grooving with the pool stick in hand. What more can you ask for? I will continue to take my prey back again and again. -

A cool place to just hang, grab some drinks and shoot some pool with your friends and/or coworkers. Happy hour prices are cheap, $3-$4 on drinks. Haven't tried the food yet but hear it's Ok. Regardless, this spot is pretty chill, located right next to/in the Public Market.

I'd give it 5 stars if they had a ping pong table. They serve Blue moon nuph said. The bartender Shawna is the prettiest and nicest bartender ever! The calimari and french fries are good and its right next door to a food court, so you can eat what ever you like before you drive home after happy hours.

I came here mostly for drinks, since it was the closest place to the Bay Market.
It happened to be the second Wednesday of the month, which means $4 pints of Sierra Nevada and free pint glass, at least, that's what all the posters and banners said.
I went inside and ordered a pint of Sierra Nevada, Celebration Ale. I was charged $4.50 (not the advertised price) and I was given a generic pint glass, something not even worthy to keep (not branded Sierra Nevada). I ended up just drinking the beer and going over to the Emerygrill to get a different drink. Didn't think it was worth it to stay. Looks like the place is mostly a pool hall; this place could be spectacular with a larger bar (it was small) and accurate pricing (at least pricing that was in line with all the posters and banners). -

I'm not going to say I'm not biased while writing about Broken Rack. I come here at least once a month to shoot pool, and yes I still suck. But that's the beauty of Broken Rack - everyone is too busy having fun and getting drunk to notice!
The crowd here is always a good mix. College kids from Cal, people blowing off steam from work, and usually a good number of sexy ladies fill the bar... So who knows, maybe you'd get some extra balls in the pocket - giggidy giggidy.
Bar tenders are a good crew, usually friendly and willing to strike up a chat. They do get busy here sometimes though, since the bar is only a few seats long...
Also, Sundays are half off pool. That's 6 bucks an hour - unbeatable!! -

I forgot all about this spot!!!
So came here towards the end of Happy Hour, was able to order
appetizers and get some brews on draft...they have RACER5!!!!! THAT'S WHAT'S UP! :)
We ate grilled chicken quesadillas....and turkey club w/fries.
Surprisingly so the food was actually good for a "bar" ...wasn't greasy or anything like that...I didn't even feel guilty after eating!
We didn't play pool...I'm not very good, wish that I was....one day.
(I think it's kinda sexy for a woman getting in compromising positions all on a pool table....That also falls in the category of women on a motorcycle, and I'm not talking about a Harley...)
Back to the review :) I'm going back for HH..cool laid back place, wasn't too crowded, good music, food, drinks, FREE wi-fi....what more can one ask for?? -

Not a HUGE Pool Fan but when my husband feels like it, we head here. Its a great place to meet up with some friends, drink till you drop and play pool while doin it. The drinks are average priced, pretty strong, and the overall ambiance of the place is kick back and chill. Service is always nice and speedy, good music and sports airing on the TVs...and also good food when your drunk and hungry :) Always have good times here..drama and funk free :)

Great things about the Broken Rack:
1) Well maintained, good equipment.
2) Clean, well-lighted room, with plenty of space to move around.
3) Full bar.
4) Cold Moose Drool Ale on tap.
5) They sponsor a stop on the Western Women's Regional 9-ball Tour every year.
6) Decent food.
7) Proximity to a great variety of eats at the Marketplace.
8) Wednesday Ladies' Night.
9) Diverse and pleasant clientele.
10) Caters to both recreational and competitive players.
My only complaint is that the service is hit or miss.
To the Broken Rack: If you had not sponsored the WWR Tour for years, I probably never would have had a reason set foot in your pool room. Now, it's my first recommendation when meeting up to play with my East Bay or SF friends. Thanks for your continued support of women's billiards!Listed in: How's my rack?

I can no longer play pool without thinking of:
1) The Peter Sellers' movie, "The Party."
http://www.youtube.com...
2) The song "Trouble" from the Music Man:
Trouble, oh we got trouble,
Right here in River City!
With a capital "T"
That rhymes with "P"
And that stands for pool.
3) Paul Newman in "The Hustler"

I have always been a terrible pool player but I was proud of myself the other day at the Broken Rack when I managed NOT to:
Tear a hole in the velvet tabletop
Hit the ball so hard that it flew off the table causing havoc and mayhem
and bodily harm.
Impale anyone with my cue stick
I did manage to have a wonderful time at a recent party held by some good friends. The food and service were wonderful.
The pool hall itself is large, clean and well lit. I have to add to the compliments about the mixed and friendly crowd, the not blaring jukebox with a wide selection of songs--talk about eclectic! And the ultra clean bathrooms! And low chairs, bar height chairs and comfy sofas---ahhh!
It's been a long time since I played pool but my memories are clouded with dark, dank, smelly, rowdy, smoke-filled parlours. Duh...I'm showing my age.
No worries about any of those old stereotypes at the Broken Rack..
The Broken Rack is a great place whether you are with a couple of friends or a larger group.
Since I didn't totally embarrass myself with my inept, yet comical playing, I will definitely return.

Well okay then! Shock the shit out of me. Totally was not expecting to have fun at the Broken Rack, but the super peppy waitress, generously poured drinks, hilarious selection in the jukebox, and spacious pool hall made not having fun close to impossible.
I absolutely suck at pool, like I'm so bad I don't even have the words. Still, I had a great time and recommend this place highly. Cuz let's face it, there aren't that many super chill places in Emeryville. -

After getting a recommendation from Pilar D I decided to take a date to play pool at the Broken Rack. OK I could have taken her to the Lemon Tree In Alameda but I think she would have said that would have been a deal breaker. Maybe the Pop Inn.
I like the fact that I can take a date to play pool, mix it up and have some fun. Otherwise it is bowling, not on my top ten. Great friendly atmosphere, well lit, fully equipped bar and great music. Not the country western Buck Owens honky tonk stuff that would totally turn off a date. It was crowded and people look like they were having fun. Definetly worth coming back. -

Yeah I don't really play pool. I just came out to go drink, eat and hang out. I did play a few racks but I can't really comment on the quality of tables and cues. We used a student discount to cover some of the table costs, so bring that school ID if you got it.
Their prices for food and drinks are similar to those of any bar and grill. The kitchen closes at 11pm so get your food in quick. I dunno if I was hella drunk or what, but their mushroom burger tasted amazing. Kinda small but thicker and juicy.
The crowd was pretty chill. You could definitely tell you were emeryville with an oakland crowd. Everyone kept it gansta but it was chill, I didn't feel like I had to get ready to throw down or anything. Oh yeah just to piss everyone off including myself, my friend decides to put money in the jukebox. I'm sure the hyphy crowd enjoyed the likes of billy idol and meatloaf. -

Sooooooooo chill
- Brightly lit
- Friendly bartenders & servers
- Fun, mixed crowd of all ages
- Stiff drinks
- Serves food
- Open late
- Better parking than Thalassa
- Less than 30 min wait for a pool table usually on a weekend (busy night)
I have grown very fond of this pool hall. Cheers -

This is place is just kinda Meh...I came here on a Friday night and the place was pretty dead. They card you before you go in,...So I assumed this place got crowded and cracked...but I was wrong. I didn't play pool, but I did chill in the room with the couches and watched the play-offs. Food is your typical, bar food...drinks...stiff :) and the patrons are a combination of 20-40 somethings. Would be a coo lil spot to do happy hour with friends or pre-game before heading elsewhere.

In case someone browses these reviews, recognizes my face, and discredits my two cents, I should mention that I used to work here. But my ratings are based on my thoughts about The Rack, pre- and post- employment.
The atmosphere is very casual and laid back - a great place to round up a bunch of friends for drinks, average bar-n-grill food, and a couple of games of pool (there's also a billiard and snooker table if that's your cup of tea). The tables are brushed every night and well-maintained. You can find some decent cues if you circle the floor and a server comes around to take orders and check up on you if she's doing her job.
There's an atrium that's a little more isolated from the bar and pool tables, where you can sit, dine, and drink... all while waiting for the next available pool table (which is likely what you'll be doing on a Friday or Saturday night).
The "private room" is good for small parties of 2-8; any more people and it gets to be too crowded as you'll most likely have the drunk ones spilling out of the doorway.
It's definitely more low-key during the day. A lot of business lunches and suits pass through for their afternoon martinis and such. But the atmosphere is always welcoming and casual.
A lot of seasoned players frequent the establishment and League nights take place Mondays and Tuesday.
Management IS friendly, but they are strict about carding and maintaining order in the place. So if you act a fool, they WILL not hesitate to refuse service to you. -
Review from Rue M.

I just love this place. A great place to be around people, yet be preoccupied doing something productive and competitive. Three nights a week I can qualify for the cheap table rent, so if you are on a budget, come on a cheap night (ladies, student, Sunday evening) and get your thrills for about $3 an hour!
The food is just so-so, heavy American bar food, but keep in mind they stop serving it at about 10pm, which is just about the time alcohol induced food cravings kick in, making deep fried potato skins sound like a GREAT idea.
Only real complaint: I don't like the jukebox, because it has TOO MANY digital choices and it's not intuitive to operate, so it takes far too long to program if you are just trying to get in a few songs between plays.
I have gone both alone and partnered and I enjoy it great either way and maybe you would too. -

This is a decent place to play pool and hang out with some friends. One night I made the mistake of forgetting that it was a pool hall and acting like it was a bar. I expected that I would be able to get a good mixed drink in a timely fashion. ICK.
Your best bet is to stick to beer and basic beverages [ie rum and coke or cranberry and vodka, nothing with more than two ingredients.].
One other thing, the way it's set up, there are limited chances to interact with other patrons, so you better make sure you bring your own cool friends with you! -

I really liked this pool hall back in college days, I used to drive all the way from downtown Berkeley (telegraph and blake) to shoot pool here when there was a Great Entertainer just right on the University avenue.
The Broken Rack is clean and spacious with great service around the clock. The atmosphere here is very laid back, and the music is never overly loud, which really strikes a note for me! There are always enough waitresses no matter how hectic it gets, and they have never missed any of my order throughout my 3 years in college. The price per hour costs higher than most pool halls you'd find (There is really not many left now) but you get what you pay for with a good, sophisticated crowd that will compliment the overall experience. Overall it's perfect for a hang out spot with your buddies and you don't' have to miss your favorite sports game.
This place holds weekly league tournament here, and there are always a lot of serious players frequenting throughout the week. So the quality of the table is undoubtedly high class. The pool cues are decent but I have been better in other high end pool hall.
As a bonus, the food here is surprisingly good. The chicken fingers are top notch and very tender. Since this IS a pool hall, I really can't complaint much.
The Broken Rack, along with California, and B st Billiard are my top 3 pool halls in the bay area.Listed in: Top Racks

Review from Razel M.
It was one of those when you and the person you're with just do not want the night to end. Aimless driving around at 1030pm led to this spot.
A real pool hall!
Wasn't drinking that night, but they were generous with the ice water. It was fairly empty, so we had an entire row of tables to ourselves -- always nice not having to worry about poking someone else in the gut (or elsewhere) when you try to take a shot. Place was well lit, with some strange music playing in the background -- strange in that you couldn't really pinpoint if there was a theme or genre to it.
Played a few games, then we eventually called it a night at 1230 or so. And guess what, it was ladies night! Awesome. I'll make a point to try the bar food and liquor when I come back, I think this place has potential for four or even five stars. -

I can't count how many times I've been here within the past few months. So much that the guy at the front doesn't even card me anymore.
Me? Not get carded? With this baby face? 5 stars.
I'm not a big drinker and they always have plenty of cups with ice cold water (self serve) near the bar; it's perfect for me but probably something no one else really cares about (:
My only complaint is the jukebox stole my dollar! Not only that, but it wants *extra* money every time you pick a decent song. So if you're wondering why the music is always kinda wiggity-wiggity-wack, its because the good stuff costs money and no one wants to waste precious alcohol-allotted money on that damn thing!
The place is randomly busy; some fridays/saturdays its packed, others its completely empty. My guess is it depends on whats opening over at the theaters that weekend. I've only really had to wait for a table twice or three times out of the 20 I've been here so it's never all that bad.
Sunday's is half off night which is great for amateur pool players like myself! I was there last weekend and paid $6 for the table. Can't beat that!
I'll probably be back this weekend. Infact, at this rate, I'll be back every weekend. You'd think with all the time I spend here with my friends, I'd be a professional pool player.
Yeah, not quite.
But I have learned how to optimize my song choices at the juke box! And if thats not success, well, I dunno what is. -

Thank you, Yelp! for dropping this place in my lap.
I don't know what a pool hall is supposed to look like. I don't frequent them. But my boyfriend and I had a blast here the other night. We simply wanted to play pool, and that's exactly what we got.
The waitress came by once or twice, so we each ordered a drink. Can't speak to the quality of their mixed beverages, because I got a vodka tonic, and the man got a Fat Tire, but she took a hint well when we said we didn't need anything else. It was a slow night, and a lot of the time she was actually camped out at the pool table closest to the bar. I guess when you work in a pool hall, you wind up shooting some pool.
Good experience, and it was ladies' night, so we got the table half off! I guess they have a few half off nights a week, (ladies' night, students' night, and Sundays are half-off for everyone!) and I am ok with that.
They also have one of those Juke Boxes that's connected to the internet, so you can find most songs you want to hear and put them on the queue!
I think it's a great spot. -

If you are in for a good game of pool with your buds, come on by. Lots of good beer on tap.. loads of terrific players. If you a sports fan, you don't just the only option of playing pool. I am kind of a blind shot player myself, as many a felt table tops have come to feel my totally laughable eight ball scratch. Go in and see how long you run the table.

For the atmosphere, I really don't know why it's $15/hour. Plus the expensive drink prices when it's not even a happenin' spot, really throws me off. Our waitress was also very distant when talking to us. I'm not saying she wasn't friendly, I'm just saying typically waitresses who work at a billiards place have some sort of character to them.
My experience: meh.
Would I come here again?: Only if someone really wants to go -

I really like this place. Nice selection of tables. Friendly staff and regulars. They have a little something for everyone with pool, snooker, billiards, and foosball (not in the greatest shape but unless you're a fooser, you probably won't care). They even have a little smoking lounge. I come here regularly to shoot 3-cushion, but I've also come with my brother and his friend, neither pool players, and they had a great time.
Chips and salsa is a little pricey at $4 but it's good salsa and you get a lot of chips (wish you got a little more salsa).
A little surprised at the 'dive" and "hole in the wall" comments. No, it's not Jillians, but who wants a pool hall with a dress code. Trust me, I've played in some dives, and I don't think this comes close. -

I have been coming to this place for years. Its definitely a nice place to either begin your night or end your night. I hadn't been here in a couple of years and stopped by last night. I was surprised I didn't have to wait for a pool table, b/c they tend to fill up quickly.
Nice atmosphere, pool tables are clean, bartenders are nice, mens bathroom nicely lit and surprisingly clean (except for the puke filled sink ... I know gross right)
A couple of hours of shooting pool, a few beers and some buffalo wings, sauce on the side please ... was definitely a nice way to end my night -

I don't really play pool but this is a great place to hang out, have a drink and just chill with your friends. My friends and I recently came here to celebrate a friend's 30th birthday. They rented the lounge area (sofa, seats, tables, chairs, flat screen) and also rented a pool table for several hours. I loved the fact that the lounge area had reserved signs for our party. Also, we had our very own server who took our orders. We all had a great time. The staff was pretty friendly.

The Broken Rack is a great place to play a decent game of pool with friends. They also feature tournaments and student discounts on Thursdays. This place has everything a local pool player could ask for, including a snooker table.
I have yet to find a single cone of talc at this place, however.
It bugs me that Thalassa is running a higher average than The Broken Rack as I write this. I'll admit that Thalassa is the more "happenin' spot" (eh...), but The Broken Rack is the better pool hall.
