Came here on a Friday night and it wasn't all that jamming in the beginning. Cover is $5 which is fine and there were quite a few straight people there as well. Beers were $5 and bartenders were cool. There is a pole in the middle and some girls were out there poling it up -- haha was cool to watch.
The music was pretty good, hip hop and pop stuff.... the DJ would go out and spray the smoke machine once in a while and there are lasers shooting off here and there.
I hadn't gone dancing in a very long time and spent a long time out there just jamming -- what a work out. If they hadn't started a line dance, I would've continued, but meh wasn't into the line dance so we left.
All in all I had fun.
I am a sucker for anything 80's..I mean it..like I seriously need help. I've been wanting to try this place ever since I turned 21 but no one would ever go with me!! Finally my friend had her birthday party here this past Monday.
It was beyond awesome. We were the few people to dress up..come on people..it's 80's night...why don't more people dress up??? I'm all for dressing up whenever I can and will usually overdo it. The music is great too! My ipod is 70% 80's music so I felt right at home. Finnallllyyyy GOOD music at a bar.
My friend fortunately reserved a seating area because the bar didn't look to have very many chairs and it was nice because it was our own private little section..which people kept trying to invade..booo. The area came with a bucket of ice, glasses, a bottle of vodka, and a three section juice container with pineapple, cranberry, and orange. I had never mixed my own drink before, so it was an experience for me lol.
I heart gay clubs because it's mostly gay men so I don't have to worry about getting hit on or having some gross stranger come up behind me and start dry-humping me. I was free to dance and not have anything to worry about.
Now I have a problem. Monday nights are usually my weekend and I have a tough choice ahead of me- do I go to trivia or here???
Came here on a Monday for my friends going away shindig. I had NO idea of the 88 cent beers! Until over half way through the night. I'll have to remember that for next time. The music was pretty entertaining. Kept everyone going.
The reason why I give it three stars is for how crowded it was and that made it HOT. It's a comfort thing.
I can't believe that I've lived in San Diego for over 4 years but had never experienced Manic Monday night -- 80s night -- at the Brass Rail. That changed this week, when a cuter-than-strawberries-cute yelper insisted that I go out on a Monday night to partake in some of his birthday shenanigans. Even though my more grown-up instincts were saying "No, Dave! It's Monday! You have work tomorrow!", my gut was saying "C'mon Dave! Get out of your apartment and shake your ass to Come On Eileen!"
So I went. How could I possible argue with Come On Eileen?
The Brass Rail was mobbed. There was a long line to get in (and a $3 cover), but I took a minute to fill out a research survey that some people were giving out, and that got me to the front of the line, a waived cover charge, *and* a $15 Starbucks gift card. Win!
There was barely space to breathe, let alone explore, once inside. The 80s tunes were blasting, but I'm glad they weren't too loud. The space is split up into a bar area, lounge area, and dance floor. The music is quiet enough in the bar and lounge that it's still possible to have a conversation, but the dance floor is definitely loud enough for anyone who's and wants to shimmy.
Really enjoyed the vibe here. The crowd seemed a lot more diverse than the usual boys' bars. There was lots of socializing and mingling to be had.
Next time I go to Brass Rail, I'll try harder to make sure that I *don't* remember anything the next morning. The verdict? Two vodka-soaked thumbs up!
This is gonna ruin my reputation with the ladies even more but I've been to the Brass Rail on several occasions. Only on Monday Night's though. I mean what straight dude doesn't want 80 cent drinks, eighties music and a room full of half naked guys on a casual Monday? Apparently every other straight dude in San Diego. It's cool though...I can handle myself and it's all good just don't go without a representative (i.e. a girl or a gay)...My buddies made me go one day under the guise that we as straight men would have our pick of the straight girl litter...Doesn't work that way at the Brass Rail...I was fondled and hollered at!
"I'm not a piece of meat! Thank you for making me feel special though!"
Anyway, when some dude told me I was fuckin' hot and than proceeded to perform fake felatio on his middle finger I knew my time at the Rail had ended...I went home but I'm sure I'll return one day when my ego needs a boost...
Not a bad place but be prepared for what you may be gettin' into...
My hubby's friends (who are straight) were raving about this place for 80s Mondays so me and my girlfriends (most of which were straight) headed out to check this place out since we were all free on a Monday night. $5 cover, but 80 cent drinks! Woo hoo! This place gets really crowded too... There was a mixture of straight and gay people. It was almost a guessing game trying to figure out who was straight/gay with the exception of a few obvious ones. Either way, it was fun for us all. It was easy to get drinks and the bartender was friendly. At one point, all the bartenders had their shirts off like a disappearing act. Thought it was amusing.. And most people are all about positive vibes here so it made for a good newbie experience
I love how the Brass Rail is always poppin, and there is good music and strong drinks.
I hate how the Brass Rail reserves those little nooks for VIP only, has a cramped smoking patio and charged 13$ for a rum and coke during last Sunday's festival.
But I aint gonna lie, I'd go back again and again.
Everyone's all up ons Manic Monday and I have to say I've never been. That's next on my list.
I have, however, been to Sabado En Fuego which is their latin night. On Saturdays. Obviously. There is a $7 cover, which is a bit more than I'm used to (cheapass), but worth the fun to be had inside.
Anyway, this place is NOT what I thought. For some reason as a teen I always got the feeling Brass Rail was dingy, dark, divey. Turns out it's actually pretty nice on the inside. I hear it was revamped a few years back. Anyway, there are some comfy chairs and couches in a lounge area, a good sized dance floor and two bars. Even when the place filled up, there was still room to dance!
I see why there complaints from my fellow Yelpers, however. The bartenders flirt with EVERYONE, and I could see how that could be obnoxious for a gay man at a "gay bar" to see male bartenders flirting with their hags. Of course, Brass Rail is straight friendly (hence the Manic Mondayers!) and all are welcome, but generally speaking this is a gay establishment and you kind of expect bartenders to play the part, gay or not. On top of that, the bartenders weren't even good at flirting, I felt skeezed upon. I ain't your "baby"!
Regardless, Sabado is most certainly en fuego. The music was a campy mix of top 40, latino favorites and some random 80s songs. The dance floor was packed which was a good thing because it obscures how bad you (me) really are at dancing. Will have to try that Manic Monday thing soon...
So, I've heard all this stuff about Manic Monday like how much fun it is, how nice (and sweaty) the people are, and of course the 80 cent drinks. Needless to say my friends and I were excited to check it out.
My experience was disappointing. BOTTOM LINE: The staff is RUDE, the drinks are shit, and there is no place to sit.
One of the bartenders turns to my friend and I and says, "You need to tip."
We were like, "What the fuck?!" Tipping is OPTIONAL! I don't mind tipping, especially since the drinks were dirt cheap but I'm not going to tip some RUDE ASS ASSHOLE bartender.
Never again.
Came here for 80's night with 80 cent drinks. Cover was $5 to get in. I came with two of my gay friends and my straight male friend. It was mehhh. Bartender was rude. Usually I tip per drink but when the drink comes in a tiny dixie cup and costs 80 cents what was he expecting me to tip $2 everytime? I had about 4 gin and tonic mini cups and the last one i guess my friend didn't tip him and he had to make a comment. Uh sir I thought tipping was optional. Not like the service was worthy of any tips anyhow. Next time I want to see half naked men dancing on pole I will take my money elsewhere
I went to the Brass Rail two weeks ago on a Monday with my best friend and a lady friend. I had a great time. It was 80's night and the nice beats of that decade caressed my body all night long. They had some cheap well drinks for a dollar which was fine. I didn't go for the drinks. I went to experience the atmosphere and enjoy the music. I was so impressed by the number of people that were out partying on a Monday night. When midnight came around, the place was packed. We had planned on staying for an hour or so but we ended up hitting the dance floor and reminiscing as the DJ was dishing up some hot, hot music from 20 years ago. I talked to some cool people, almost got a lap dance from this drunk British girl, drank some, laughed a lot, danced some and loved it a lot. I strongly recommend it as a chill hang out place on a Monday night whether you are gay or not!
This place was so much fun! I came here with friends for the Gay Pride weekend celebration a few years ago.
The music left something (for me) to be desired, but the crowd was fantastic! I felt like I was on an acid trip or something, and I hadn't even been drinking! Girls (were they?) with big, peacock-feather eyelashes, boys in short shorts, and just fun people everywhere. Wow.
I didn't drink (I'm seriously such a lightweight that my friends would have had to drag me back to their apartment after one or two drinks), but I did order some kind of chicken dish. YUM! The food here is really good and comes in large portions.
I'm sure The Brass Rail isn't always crazy like it was during Pride, but I'd definitely come back to check it out again.
Realization......"Gays do have more fun".
Went to Brass Rail on Saturday for their "Sabado en Fuego" night.
The hubby and I got there ten minutes before 10 pm, so our cover was $7.00. (two for one special). We paid, were stamped on the wrist, went in, ordered a couple of drinks, sat down, and critiqued the space.
The interior was clean, low cost modern and cavernous. Our bartender was buff, but approachable and friendly enough.
We sat and waited for others to arrive since we were two out of maybe eight total at that moment.
The awesome uber cool latin music was provided by the d.j. from the 5o'clock weekday traffic mix from XA91.7.
Since we had been stamped on the wrist we were allowed to leave for a while and come back in later. We did go Urban Mo's and had a drink there for a little while (it was exciting there, but I will elaborate on thier review)
We got back to Brass Rail around 11:45.
This time it was packed with people from front to back. People were having fun and making small talk with us.
Just then, somone turned up the fun dial and let in 15-20 drag queens invade the space. Most were 10 foot tall or more, with bare extra large Michelle Obama guns, and all were escorded by handsome men in tuxedos.
We made friends with a couple of them who explained to us that they had arrived in a bus and were celebrating someones 50th birthday.
All of the sudden, I too yearned for a fabulous shimmer dress, boobs to fill it with, heels, and a little blond bob wig to finish off the look.
Anyway, as the night progressed, more latins and thier friends showed up.
There are many reasons to like gay bars, for instance, everyone has something clever to say to each other, free drinks, the straight peeps there are more mature than most, and overall, everyone feels very safe. (I've been freaked out and bashed by some obnoxious homophobes in my time).
I'm happy I have places like this to go to.
When my parents lived in Hillcrest my dad used to come here every now and then for a sly pop - he'd tell my stepmother he was running an errand. I remember asking my 75 year old, ultra conservative, roman catholic devoted church-goer father if it bothered him that it was a gay bar. His response was "no honey, as long as they don't play that disco music while I'm there."
Well, OK then!
Aaah, it's been a year since I made it to The Brass Rail and it was as much fun as in the past. Still the best damn Lynchburg Lemonade since I moved to California. $7, but strong, tasty and perfect.
Saturday night, my friend and I got there around 10:30PM so it wasn't packed, yet gave us some time to suck our first drink down and start dancing in place. Aaah, Latin night! Just the right mix for dancing, and that I did for over three hours.
As before, the bathrooms are clean, well stocked, something I truly appreciate when heading out and about.
Bonus for this trip...a female go-go dancer. Woo hoo!! About time! A nice extra eye candy was a treat, as the club is usually packed with gay gays or women who just aren't my type. Totally would have tipped her but I was broke by the time she got up there in her sparkly boobs and fishnets.
Small bummer, TBR no longer has the news racks of GLB papers by the front door but hey, that was just something we'd grab on our way out in the past.
I'm happy my favorite place was still what I expected, so I'll definitely be going back.

Manic Mondays here are fun. The drinks are 80 cents and the cover ranges from 3 to 5 bucks. This place will give you bang for your buck but be far-warned it is crowded as hell and smells like hot ass.
The line however to get drinks is never bad. Squeeze your way into the bar and shell out your ones for 80 cent wells.
The dance floor is cracking and the DJ plays all the 80's songs you hate with defying volume and strobed out lasers. There is a stripper pole with strategic placement right in front of the bathrooms. Watching the pole can provide hours of hilarity seeing people getting kicked in the face by drunk dancers.
Later on in the evening they have some weirdo Jones-townish, cult singer sing along with the crowd to even more disgusting 80's songs. He also, severs as pole entertainment throughout the evening.
This bar is lacking in the other departments, aside from the cheep drinks, variety of people, and popping dance floor. You cannot hear shit in the whole place! It smells like tuna, did I mention that already? You have to push your way thorough people packed like sardines to go on the patio, and stand arm to arm butt to butt. No seating is available on Monday unless VIP paid either.
This is a good place to go to get sloshed on Mondays. Never been here another day. Whole review based on dat.
I visited the Brass Rail on a very mellow Thursday night, which is apparently no-cover and karaoke night. The bar was uncrowded, which was nice, so I was able to walk straight up to get a beer with zero hassle and zero waiting. Any bar that has Guinness on tap scores points in my book, so I was a happy camper, and I've been oddly entertained by karaoke lately, so it was a perfectly good night for me.
I'm new out in San Diego, and so was just out on an exploratory evening, and did not realize that this is typically considered a gay bar, but that didn't matter a bit. People were friendly, chatty, and having fun, and the KJ was doing a decent job of keeping the night rolling... though there just weren't enough people there, so he had to keep prodding folks to sign up & sing. I admit, I did not help out & pick up the mic... and, to everyone else who was there that evening: You're welcome! ;-)
I loved the cool couches they have for a nice relaxing night with some friends, or whatever. Definitely a dive bar feel to it, but with a friendly spin.
The overall feeling for me? Casually fun dive bar. Nothing I'd go out of my way for, but something I'd happily stop in at for a Guinness.
Shall we go dancing on monday?
I have to say the music is quite good on Monday nights. The only problem I have with the music is the DJ he is ALWAYS turning the music down so you can sing along. I know it's fun to do that but I am not at a kareoke bar and every song is plain ridiculous.
They have one huge bar that runs along the north end of the place. The bartenders are usually shirtless so if you guys or gals like that then check em out. on the opposite side to tha bar there is a lounge area where the seats are reservation only(for some reason though I cant imagine having bottle service there) but they have it that's how you roll.
They make their drinks pretty strong and that's something I find great about bars that do, even if I am paying a buck lol (yep mondays 1 dollar) There is a narrow patio on the east end of the building where you can chill and have a smoke or two, it's a bit crowded out there so that can get a little annyoing.
I have only been there once and that was for 80's night (mondays) but everyday is a different day so check it out, it's a pretty fun place.
Like 80's music? Cheap drinks? Sardine-esque environments?
This is your place on monday night.
I didn't see many people dressed up like the eighties although it was hard to get a good look at anyone in particular in the massive pulsating sea of people. The only way to get around is to hop in one of the little streams of people wedging its way around the club.
The crowd was mostly male with the occassional woman here and there, much like daytime telivision is to black people. There were plenty of beautiful guys, and of course the bartenders had their shirts off.
I would go again. I had a good time. I wouldn't stay that long though. The crowd is too tight for my tastes... I think some other hillcrest club should get the hint and start having drinks for 75 cents on monday or 90 cents or something. there sdefinately plenty of people who still go out on monday.
The only night I go is on the 80 cent drink night with some of my gay coworkers. I like the cheap drinks but it takes forever for me to get my 80 cent vodka tonic (someone reading this wants to smack the shit out of me!). I'm kidding but if you like 80 cent drinks, gay guys, or tons of sweaty gay dudes rubbing all over you, or all the above, come here for sure.
Manic Mondays. 'Nuff said.
80s music. 80 cent wells. $80 bottle/vip service. Being a product of the 80s, what more could I wish for? A few things actually. 1. As a hetero practicing female, I wish this wasn't a gay bar only in the sense that not too many "straight" clubs play enough BLACK Michael Jackson or SLUTTY, PRE-MOM Madonna songs. 2. I wish the tranny behind me didn't have perkier tits than I do. 3. I wish I could work the pole as good as the "gayle" (gay male) go-go dancer. But that's besides the fact. I would have given The Brass Rail five stars... but I decided to take one away due to the fact that there were sooo many beautiful men who had absolutely no interest in me or my vagina.
Well I came here with a couple of friends for Manic Monday. It was my first time ever being to a gay bar. But I had lots of fun considering the drinks were only 80 cents. Covers 3 bucks before 11 and then 5 dollars after. The bouncer was really nice he was begging my friend to pole dance. When I got in we got drinks that didn't even take long to get. I love how everyone was really nice and would tell the bartender I was waiting first so he could help me out. The musics not really my style, but I danced anyway. The male go-go dancer was super cute he really worked that pole. Other than that I had a really good time. Not somewhere I'd be a regular to but it was a good experience.
oh yah BRING CASH they don't take card at the bar or for cover.
The Bangles: Manic Monday: 80s Night
This place jumps on Mondays. Mix in cheap drinks, sweat bands, fanny packs and A-ha in the background - That spells a party. Ernesto, Assan, Justin, Francis, Jennifer, Nina and I beat the crowds by arriving early and loved the vibe. The place was packed with Affliction T-Shirts, Spiky Hair and Big Glasses.
What a night!
I even had a chance to drink their newest addition to the menu 'Absinthe' w/o the hallucinogen. Tell you the truth, I failed in finishing the drink. (Call me sucker) I tried sipping the sugary concoction but I could not even down half of it. Yikes.. Justin took one for the team and gulped it like a rock star.
Will I go back? Absolutely, but not before I get my 'Members Only' jacket from my mom.
I have two words for you: Manic Monday.
The only day I've ever been to Brass Rail is Monday, but you wouldn't know it was a Monday if you walked in at 11:30pm. The place becomes packed like it's a Friday night - a guaranteed four day weekend for all! Manic Monday is 80's night where the cover and the drinks are 80 cents, and the music is all 80's. The bar has an awesome setup where there are no chairs around it, so it's easy to walk up and get a drink (although you'll still wait if it's crowded, of course).
An extra little bit of awesome: they have a cell phone booth. Like a phone booth but so you can talk on your cell phone. I always laugh at that. Isn't that why text messaging was created?
BR is the new Monday hot spot for gays and their friends. It's 80's night with 80 cent drinks and $80 bottles. It used to be 80 cent cover, too, but tonight it was jacked up to $3. It doesn't take too long to get the cheap drinks. When they first started the promotion a month or so ago, it took FOREVER, but they responded with more bartenders!
The 80's music is awesome! The singing DJ is a little angry for my taste, but she definitely serves it up when she performs. They usually play a Debbie Gibson song in the mix, but tonight I'll hear it "only in my dreams."
Now for the negative...and it's a big one to me. Two stars off for not letting laypeople sit on the cushy seats. They are all reserved for bottle service. OK, I understand if people want bottle service, then maybe they can get priority for booths, but how are you going to rope off every single cushy seat, even when they aren't reserved and no one is sitting there. There's nowhere to sit if you aren't getting bottle service.
And tonight a lot of the booths were empty!! But if you tried to sit in one, a big goon would appear to encourage you to get the hell up now.
I hear Universal is pulling the same "seats are for bottle service" shit, and it irks me to no end. I moved here from New York where bars and clubs actually have comfortable seats for ALL of their patrons. And now that I've tasted sitting, I won't stand for this any longer (literally and figuratively)!
Give me cushy chairs or give me death!
So I don't get out much these days, nor do I generally endorse flaunting your inner booty-shaking skank. But at the urging of friends we hit up a costume party at another bar, and then later found ourselves inside the Brass Rail.
Somehow I ended up in a naughty cop outfit, complete with walkie-talkie and handcuffs. There were about 5 or 6 of us, looking like the female version of the village people.
Before I knew it, I was nice and liquored up, onstage for a costume contest with my ladies and a giant cock (no really), and had to leave before my friend ripped the bouncers shirt off.
WILD NIGHT.
What happens at the Brass Rail, stays at the Brass Rail..
I went to this place on one of their cheap monday nights for a friend's b'day. Let me qualify this review by saying that the actual dancing part of the night I really loved. They played some great 80s music that was a nice change than the usual dance music.
But if there is one thing that can make a 5 star review become a 1 star review it is being friggin overcharged on a credit card at a bar. Now I wouldn't care if I was a bad tipper or something, but that just was not the case. The entire night the bartender overcharged me for every single drink. Now I get it, I'm a chick, I do not turn you on mr.gay bartender, so I don't expect any discounts. It's only fair, guys don't eve get a discount at any other bar normally. But you charged me like $3 for every drink even though everyone knows monday nights they 're only $0.80. I didn't say anything. I even tipped you despite you overcharging me left and right. BUT YOU MR. BAD BARTENDER.-you friggin tried to slide in an extra $10 bucks for yourself and didn't think I would check my credit card balance. Needless to say, I checked & remembered that I did not spend $40 on a night when drinks cost less than a dollar each. I had to go through my credit card company and get the charge disputed. So not only did you waste my time, but you also broke the sacred trust that I, as the consumer, bestow upon you that you will just type in the amount of my ACTUAL TIP and not what YOU WANT.
I come here with my uncle and I LOVE IT! I have so much fun! The people are beautiful, music is great, the bartenders take care of you! Saturday night is my fave night! I always meet a nice girl!
I keep on hearing about Manic Mondays, I think I'm going there tonight...........I will let you guys know how it went!
Totally agree with Lemi W. Manic Mondays are really fun. Great music you can actually dance to. There are of course some gay dramatics here and there, but that goes with the territory of approval seeking gays. I used to get off work at 11pm and head over there to dance for a few hours and go home. It's super fun. The only complaint is the damn plastic cups they serve their 80 cent drinks in...the people drop those on the dance floor all the time and just laugh and kick them around...but so far the most fun ive had at a club in hillcrest.
So I don't care what anyone else said about this place... I had such a blast here... on a Sunday afternoon!!!
My husband and I are from LA, we were in San Diego for the Cubs game and found ourselves at the Brass Rail(long story how that happend) We can't understand how that place isn't jam packed every sunday! The sign out front says in big bold letters $1 beers, $3 pitchers!!!!! I know sometimes, bars say those things just to get you in there but then they give you a dixie cup of beer for $1, but NOT THIS TIME!!! for $1 you get a pint of bud lite, for $3 you get a mini pitcher of bud lite, and for $5 you get a regular size pitcher of Bud lite (we did the math and the $1 pint is the best way to go). Then, on top of that they have a beer pong table up, and a ping pong table up... that you can play FOR FREE! we were two out of the 4 people in the bar so we were able to play ping pong for a few hours... and had such a good time!!!
After 3 hours (and about 5 beers)here I decided that it was my mission to tell the world about this great bar and it's great deal on Sundays. You seriously can't beat it!
So I wrote my first gay bar review about Bar of Castro today and got to thinking... "hmmm when was the first time I ever been into a gay bar?"
See what had happened was that while living in San Diego (6 years ago) I worked for my Uncle who had this lending company. It happened to be located in Hillcrest. I'm walking down the street and all I can hear is hip hop... bumpin' DMX. I was like whhhaaattt??? I walk by and see a group of fine looking sistas hanging outside... I'm like whhhaaatt?? I got to get into this joint. Bouncer looks at me smiles and says, "$5 cover" still smiling when I walk in.... hmm... I'm thinking they even have nice friendly bouncers. I pay the $5, walk in, buy a drink and start to scope the place out. Girls dancing wtih girls (typical).... guys dancing in a circle (typical)... guys holding up the wall (typical)... The bartenders are all clean cut, music is banging and then it happened.
I look in the corner and there's two doods making out and grinding, wtf? What kind of straight club is this? Then I see some girls making out... Heeeyyyy ;0)... then some dood walks by and pinches my ass. I must have looked soooo fricken confused because the bartender looks to me and says, "you know this is a gay club right?"
"no I didn't... I saw all the girls and-"
b,"ya, they are gay too"
me, "Nooooo" putting head on the bar
b, "It's ok you are not the first to get confused"
me, "I got to go I got to go... damn they fine too."
b, "look, here's your $5 back. Oh and the guy that pinched your ass."
me, "ya?"
b, "he does that to all the straight guys"
In my head I'm thinking back.... "oooh that's why the bouncer was smiling so damn much."
I wonder if Brass Rail is still a hot spot? I wish I remember that bartenders name because he sure didn't have to give me my $5 back.
This place used to be so crappy inside. The remodel looks really nice, but no one is there.
I guess you are supposed to go on Monday nights. That's nice for people who don't have to get up before noon on Tuesdays.
We stopped in for a drink after dinner on a Friday night... it was about 9pm... we were the first patrons to walk in the door. The bartender was nice enough to put the baseball game on the TV for us.
But Brass Rail is not the kind of place for chillin with a beer and watching a game, I don't think. It's supposed to be a party place, but where's the party?
BRASS RAIL HAS REMODELED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! comprende?!?!
$2 drinks 9 - 10pm every second friday [that's my night! come!]
anyway
they got rid of ALL their crowd, ALL their DJs, ALL their insides, and started ALL over. so if you heard anything bad, it is OLD.
OLD OLD OLD!!
like LITERALLY, they got rid of EVERYTHING. for a few months, you could go there on a friday night and there would be no one! they really did completely gut the place! they are trying hard to get a new name for themselves.
perhaps "omisexual" ? ? haha
they are now a mixed crowd venue. some gay nights, some goth nights, electro-80's nights, indie band nights, etc
go to fashion whore, for $2 drinks from 9 - 10, a fashion show, and dancing to electro/80's every second friday:
http://www.clubfashion...
yay self promotion... haha
With a name like Brass Rail, and a motif that includes florescent pink lights, it's not hard to figure out this place's target market. Queer as queer can be!
Expect loud house music, flashing disco lights and random ass-grabbing. As a straight gal, I've only been a few times, but I always have fun. The dance floor is vast and inviting.
Quick side note; the Rail just added a new Thursday night featuring live, Latino music by this crazy dude named Mono Mono...I can't wait to check it out!
I think I might be a gay man trapped in a straight woman's body.
This place could be cute if they changed the outside of the building. The poor people of Hillcrest are plagued with that hideous corner exterior. Plus another BIG problem here is the security they've hired. They think they're working a red carpet event at the Oscars instead of standing out front a dive bar in Uptown. They're rude and unwelcoming. Plenty of other choices in the area. Keep moving.
not my favorite place i have to say. it takes an extremely long time to get a drink and the smoking patio is soo small its almost impossible to make it out there. on the up side the music is good and the dance floor was pretty packed. its a popular place but if you are not into the club scene this is not for you
Monday 80's night with 80 cent drinks...Fuck yeah! My wife goes every Monday with her friends and I just had to see what the hype was about. Oh man...I wasn't ready for that. Everyone was very nice. We all got obliterated beyond belief. DJ Junior spun the best music that I have ever heard in a club. If you weren't dancing then you must not have a heart beat. The big negative was using the restroom. I couldn't go at the urinals at all and the 1 stall always had 2 or more men in it at a time. It was no big deal, and I laughed about it, but I still had to go #1. I finally got in the stall and all was well again. 3 stars for a vivid crowd and the best music. I will definitely go back.
it is not that i don't like gays...
in fact, one might even say i have "mad love" for those of the homo persuasion.
it's that, are you fucking kidding me, I AM NOT GOING INTO A BAR IF DRY ICE STEAM IS PUFFING OUT THE FRONT DOOR WHEN I WALK IN AND I CAN'T SEE A SINGLE THING.
it was either dry ice steam or sweat or hot breath. either way, ew.
Thanks to Big, Gay Joe and his Saturday "Madonna All Day" Madonna collection and dance moves. I loved my wine & blueberry spritzer too (not for everyone but i loved it!)
This so-called gay bar is a fraud. It is NOT gay-friendly.
The bartenders appear to be straight and hostile to gays. And the service stinks. What bar can't serve a Bloody Mary "because we don't have any mix"? This is the type of place where the bartender has to approve of what you're drinking (or just plain approve of you) before he'll serve you. No thanks.
I also think this bar is a major liability to the Hillcrest community and gay scene. It is the oldest gay bar in San Diego outside of downtown, but you'd never know it from the attitude of the people working there.
There are ethnic theme nights (YAWN) on the weekend that bring in a crowd so rowdy that they have to have five security guards blocking the sidewalk just to keep the patio patrons (like zoo animals) under control.
People leaving these theme nights often fight and make it impossible to pass by on the sidewalk. Lately, a (no doubt illegal) food stand has been appearing on the sidewalk late at night (Tijuana style) serving hot food. E Coli anyone? If you get sick, you're on your own.
The drunken crowd is quite hostile at times -- derogatory remarks about people's age, racial tensions.
The overall atmosphere is "ghetto." This kind of scene should not be happening in Hillcrest.
The gay community ought to rise up against this travesty.
But no. We're all "metrosexual" now, and we think that tolerating anything and everything shows that we are the equivalent of brilliant Harvard graduates and New York sophisticates.
How lame. Wake up, you idiots!
And they even have the nerve to charge a cover...Well, at least the bathrooms are nice.
