Nice little place. I was there on a Thursday evening, and it felt happy busy but not annoyingly crowded. I could see this place easily getting too packed on Friday or Saturday.
Good selection of wines & beer, and the bartender makes a nice, strong G&T.
The reason it's only 3 stars is the food... had only apps, but they were just okay/good... nothing great.
Okay, 3.5 stars for the friendly service.
Friday night (11/6) I cruised to the Bowery on Sunset to determine for myself whether this hamburger was "still LA's best burger" (the source of that quote is unknown).
The location is within walking distance to Amoeba, the Arclight theaters and the Palladium. Also very close to the Well for more beverages. The bowery sits in-between two other little eateries vying for the same chic clientele. This "gastro-pub" was bustling which led me to believe that this food would be amazing. The ambiance was nice and compact. An elegant and simple bar design--no gimmicks.
The burger breakdown:
"You can have it all" ( Yo La Tengo ref. # 5). There are a ton of options to put on the burger all costing a dollar a piece-- unless you know that you are going to go nuts then it is recommended to have the works (three toppings and cheese on your burger for three dollars more).
My burger consisted of sautéed mushrooms and fried jalapenos with a side of buttermilk onion rings (an additional three dollar side with burger). Also the burger is accompanied by a house salad.
Deconstructing my burger: a generous helping of meat-- that patty was very big. The meat had a charbroiled taste akin to Carl's jr (not a bad thing). The bun seemed to be a way to differentiate this place from the next but nothing was gained from using the english muffin.
The sautéed mushrooms added a little seasoning but not much. The fried jalapenos were hardly noticeable ( a deseeded pepper is not very spicy). The onion rings were decent.
The Bowery was very generous in portions and not to mention a free beer that our table received. The burger was filling but did not impress me. Not too much flavor, nothing savory about it. However, I enjoyed the locale and probably would come back to drink something just not to eat.
A Tuesday night around 9PM and the place is packed. We are seated at the bar at our agreeable concession and the bartender immediately eyes and greets us.
They have a wine, beer, and cocktail selection, as well, I believe, so she asks to take our drink orders. I'm a fan of viognier and pinot grigio, so when she told me they didn't carry either, she had me sample their pinot blanc and another white that was definitely sweeter but had too harsh a follow-through taste... for my taste, anyway. So I went with the Pinot Blanc. He had a beer - the variety of which I don't remember... I was really experiencing the Pinot Blanc. :(
We each got the Bowery Burger served on an english muffin with different add-on's. I added gruyere cheese, sauteed mushrooms, and avocado (each is $1), and then a side of their sweet potato fries. He ordered it with gruyere, a fried egg, and bacon, with a side of potato string regular fries. We both had it cooked medium and both really enjoyed both the burger and the fries.
The ambience is rather dark, with a speakeasy meets New York dark deli feel. With a single bar flanking one side of the room, the rest of the space is occupied with wall seating, high top tables, and one or two floor-level booths. The lighting is just dim enough for you to feel like you can have honest, unbridled conversation, but not bright enough where you can read your menu without squinting.
This is an ideal place for a casual dinner and drinks night. Not particularly recommended for groups bigger than three - four might even be pushing it. It's not a big place.
Enjoyed, though, and would return if in the neighborhood... and parking was found within walking distance.
I'm a regular here and I am impressed by how well the staff is treated. They are allowed to drink and eat while they work. That's great but I disagree when my food is sitting in the window and I see an employee walk up and ignore my food and grab food for himself and proceed to eat while the whole restaraunt was busy. I figured this was the manager by his tacky swagger of entitlement. I ordered a burger, which is claimed as "LA's best burger"... (which is a lie) I'll fill you in on a little secret, the best burger in this town is Umami burger. Hands down. There happens to be one near the urban outfitters just down the street. The Bowery is a dissapointment.
This was mostly a lack luster burger. They give you a lot of toppings to choose from but that's all irrelevant since the only thing you can taste on the burger is this weird sweet(pickled?) red onion. I can't be too sure what it was to be honest because it was so dark in there that everyone in our group had to use their tables candle to read their menu. Wonder if Abe Lincoln had to do the same back before they had invented light bulbs.
It looked like they had a pretty good selection of drinks so if you looking for a bar nearby maybe not a bad place.
3.5 stars:)
Girl date with April. "Yay!"
Dinner & Movie....
*I just don't have the frickin patience to write a clever review from my damn phone so I'll just get right to the point*
The Bowery Burger: Insanely tasty! Ground sirloin, (ask for it medium) on toasted English muffin with gruyere and grilled onions. Oh my....
Sweet Potato Fries: sweet, salty, and crispy. No need to say more...
Decent selection of wine for a Hollywood bar. Had a couple glasses Chateau Le Croix. Ehh... Wasn't kept at a properly controlled temperature so it had a lil too much bite. Still... Better than Strawberry Hill in the backseat of an IROQ Z like the days of high school.
No fancy restaurant/bar here. But still comfy... Service is Hollywood nice. Which means, a lil attitude from the wait staff but they're too broke to lose a paycheck so they will get the job done and maybe crack a smile.
Oh... Before I throw my phone against the wall... One more thing... The Moules Frites suck. Wayyy too bland.
With all that? I like it here. Which is saying a lot cuz I'm proud to say I'm a Hollywood Hater.
This unassuming little bar/restaurant was a big, happy surprise for this little bar un-hopper. :)
All my friends know that I'm not a fan of bars. Their closed-in feeling gives me the heebie-jeebies.
But this place, with its very open "doors" to Sunset feels bigger than its tiny square footage.
As most of the other reviewers have mentioned, this is a tiny space, compared to all the other restaurants.
However, kudos to them, for the food!! It delish!! My friend and I ordered two separate entrees, and both were delish!!
The only reason I'd give it 4/5 stars is because the space was a bit tight, even though it does have an open air feeling. And, the waiter did have some trouble, because he was working alone.
The parking was a bit of a pain. Be prepared to walk a lot, if you're not a fan of valet parking.
I wish this place could be my local.
The place is small and I'm sure fills up fast, but on Monday night we found a seat, no problem. It was sweltering inside, but with the fires and such going on, a lot of places don't seem to have their AC up and running. I'll deal.
Our service was great, wine was good, and the food was tasty! The place is small, sure, but it's got a great vibe and feel to it. Real East Coast and chill.
I had never been here before and I don't live in the neighborhood.... and still, I saw three people I know and it turns out the manager working that night is from my hometown in Pennsylvania! Small freakin' world. That alone gives this place a nice spot in my heart.
While I'm clearly late to the game, I'd like to think it's better late than never. Bowery is fantastic, the ambiance, the food, the wine and beer selection, the location (relative to the Cinerama, Amoeba, H'wood Blvd). It just all makes sense.
I had a nice glass of modestly priced wine, my friend had a good pint of Stone IPA. I got the Sliders which were spectacular, my friend had the Tomato soup which he said "hit the spot."
The only thing that kept me from issuing the fifth star: the service was weak. They were too attentive to the point where it felt like we were being pushed out, when the place was half-empty. They dropped the bill WAY too early, as we were going to keep drinking, but were scared off. Lame.
But the weak service, wasn't quite enough to ruin the entire experience. I recommend Bowery.
The menu went for a 'less is more' thing which was cool and the food was pretty good if you stick to comfort food (burgers/fries better than fish dish).
The vibe was great.
The service sucked. Our server was aloof and more of an 'order taker.' He actually told me 'the TVs aren't working' when I asked if they'd flip on the Dodgers game. Conveniently they worked when the bartender wanted to see the Steelers game. Odd.
If they'd ditch the 'too cool for school,' Hollywood thing... a great Pub with character.
Yum Yum...
This place is tasty... good food and good Beer is all I need and I am sold. They have a great menu and its a great place to come grab a bite with friends or even a date.
For awhile now The Bowery has been one of the places to always catch my eye on drives up and/or down Sunset Blvd. Walking in, I was immediately impressed by the greeting from the friendly staff, the lighting, the mood, the attractive full bar and most of all the tunes. The decor reminded me so much of places I have been to in NYC and that just got me even more excited for my upcoming summer trip to New York.
I ordered the white bean hummus and green lentil falafel and some shoe string fries. The other food looked and smelled great but not very veggie friendly. We had a wonderful dinner and were very pleased. I was smitten b/c of the black and white tile, wooden stools, Wilco and Lou Reed on the music play list while I dined.
great pub for a beer and very tasty burger. Their burgers are meaty, cooked perfectly and served on english muffins. The Eng Muf's are a perfect vehicle to hold the burger - not too much bread but enough to hold the FAT burger with. If you haven't been - you must visit at least once. Oh and the waitress was very friendly and attentive.
After only one visit, I'm kind of a fan. After getting to the Waffle for the Sunday brunch, we saw it was over crowded.
Went across the street to the Bowery which was deserted. The place is usually crowded so it seemed like a nice change of pace.
Overall, friendly service, delicious food, and reasonable prices. The Bowery Burger is a must try if you've never been there. A fat patty enclosed in a toasted English Muffin. A selections or gourmet cheeses to choose from (I recommend the Gruyere). It comes red in the middle so if you like a cooked beef slab, let em know.
My friend had the mac and cheese which I sampled. It was very rich and creamy which crusted breadcrumbs on the top. Also a must. The shoe string fries were good as was the garlic ailoi dipping sauce. Beer for $4! Like the Terminator I will be back!
Street parking--bleh
i'm usually wary of a bar that doesn't have a single beer on tap. bottled beers always feel like i'm being cornered into spending more money than i should be. but my tensions eased a bit when i realized this bar is probably more a whiskey-on-the-rocks type of joint. but they did have an IPA i'd never tried that wasn't half-bad. food looked pretty tasty, too, but we weren't there to eat; just wanted to put away a few empty calories before our event started nearby.
sidling up to the bar, both the server and bartender were helpful which is nice (read: rare) in a semi-classy, LA restaurant. to top that off, something completely unseen in LA were the friendly people at the bar - maybe they just confused us for someone famous and that's why they were nice ("are you in a band?"). they should have just asked selma blair if she was famous - she was sitting on my other side.
I love places that have that NY vibe and this place has it in spades. Came here for lunch today with some old coworkers who recommended it and I wasn't disappointed.
This is another restaurant from the owners of Delanceys and Mission Cantina down the street. It's got a very similar feel, even though they are all unique places with different types of food you can tell they're all connected somehow. For me, the way a place looks and feels directly affects the way I enjoy my food. That doesn't mean bad food is great in a cool place, but it does mean that I enjoy my good food even more if I'm enjoying my surroundings. This isn't crazy cool like Geisha House, it's more subtle cool like Village Idiot. Bar cool, comfortable and modern, clean and sophisticated but not stuffy.
Anyways, having had a really bad experience at Father's Office over the weekend (wouldn't let us in with a baby) I ordered the burger here with everything. It was very good, maybe not quite as good as Fathers Office but good enough. The burger is a little overpriced but then what isn't in Hollywood? I ordered some Syrah which I was slightly disappointed with, but the drink prices were very reasonable so I'm not really complaining.
Maybe it was because it was lunch time and it wasn't overrun with hipsters, but the service was great. And in a nice twist, I was told that they would happily serve us if we came with our baby as long as it wasn't after 10pm and running as a bar only which seems reasonable to me. So screw Father's Office and come here. You'll get a better atmosphere, with actual service, you'll be able to get a seat and have a very good burger and they'll even give you ketchup. That's right FO bitches, they're are many games in town other than you.

This place is going to make me fat..or a drunk. Maybe both.
I really don't have great luck, that being said...I had a great experience with every member of the staff...from bartender (made me a good whiskey drink) to bus boy. Shit...I beleive this was the first time I every wanted to tip...generously.
meal started with mac and cheese and sliders. Sliders where delicious...Serious, I am seriously being serious about them being delicious. The inside wall pink and full of meat juice (get your mid out of the gutter!). The mac and cheese......great. It was the right amount for two people and it was cheesy and creamy...baked bread crumbs on top...slightly burnt cheese on the edges. Soooo good.
Dinner was short ribs and pork confit (pork cooked in it's own fat?...fancy french chicharones?!!?). Everything was good...The pork was crispy on the outside and tender inside...served over some red cabbage thing that was tasty...buuuuut next time I am going to ask them to add mashed potatoes cause I knoooow it would be the shit if it had this. I had a bit of short ribs and they were good...man friend was very happy with those...and with the rest of my food. Thanks to the great waiter my glass of beer was never empty...everytime I was two sips away from done, he would show up asking if I wanted more and I said yes.
Dessert..I am not a dessert person but..we ordered three like fat asses and took it home for gay dessert feeding. Butterscotch mousse...banana bread pudding and some apple tart...banana bread 1 and apple tart 2...very good.
The only thing that would have made this place better...a larger outdoor seating area.
I don't know what's up with the service at The Bowery, but the food was very tasty. We lucked out and got the last available table. It took a while for our server to help us, and she kept disappearing whenever we needed her, like when there was a foreign object floating in my friend's drink, but we all agreed the food was good.
I had the Bowery Salad, which was a spring mix in a mustard vinaigrette with asparagus, beets, goat cheese, hazelnuts, and what I thought were capers, but I remembered later were lentils. Darn, I wouldn't have left so many on my plate had I realized what they were. I guess the lighting wasn't that great. I also got a side of sweet potato fries which were yummy, although a smaller quantity than I would have expected for $5.
No free refills on my lemonade since it was "fresh-squeezed", but looked and tasted just like Minute Maid. Oh well, probably best to have a real bar drink here or a glass of wine from their list on the chalk board.
this place is pretty cool. it's intimate and comfortable. i suppose it reminds me a tad of new york (it definitely felt like a new york summer in there last night since they only have fans and no a.c.) with the dark wood, mirrors, and dim lighting vibe.
they have a decent wine list and menu. i had a great butter lettuce salad.
seems like a cute date place.
parking around there sucks.
Even though this bar/restaurant has been around for over 4 years, I only recently discovered it as the entrance is so nondescript.
The bartender last night was Jasmine and she was very knowledgeable about wines and let me taste a couple before I settled on the bottle that I wanted. The food was great too! I had the spinach salad and the braised short ribs. The short ribs came on a luscious bed of mashed potatoes, which was as moist as the meat. I'd definitely order that one again.
I loved the decor of the place. It has a dark wood bar with beautiful tile accents, though not enough handbag hooks underneath!
All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. A nice mid-priced bottle of red wine, a salad, and two entrees only came up to about $80.
Great food and a nice atmosphere. I've rarely strayed from the English-muffin burgers, though. If you've had one, you understand why I keep going back.
The downside: It's a little cramped in there. Oddly, though, I've never had to wait long for a table. Maybe a bit loud. And they really need to get beer on tap. Their bottle selection is good, but it would be so much better if they had draft.
Try the Bowery Burger!
Parking: Street parking only, but meters are close by.
Atmosphere: Small on the inside, contemporary, somewhat dark, and perfect for a small happy-hour gathering or for a quick lunch.
Service: Friendly and knowledgeable service.
Food: If you must order one thing from the menu, order the Bowery burger. I ordered mine "the works" style with Gruyere cheese and grilled onions. The grilled onions were caramelized perfectly just before the point of being French onion soup-worthy which made them succulent and sweet. The bacon was perfectly crisp and harmonized with the other flavors nicely. The patty was thick and perfectly cooked a medium rare, the charring on the outside offered nice contrast and it was just freakin' perfect. As a side, I ordered crisp, sweet potato fries with a side of ranch. This was no ordinary ranch dressing that comes out of a Sysco plastic jar; you could see the finely minced bits of chives, parsley was present too, as was white onions, it was slightly soupy, but the flavor was tangy and second to none! I challenge you to find a better ranch! The fries were salted with sea salt and also great! A gourmet meal fit for Hollywood elites and lowly Yelpers like me alike!
Despite the fact that the name Bowery isn't at all sexy, and if in fact if it were the title of a real man, I would imagine a heavy set guy that looked slightly pregnant in a tight fitted blue-green holey tee spread even on a beat up couch nursing his thick crust pizza addiction with his chubby chicken wing stained fingers groping the dough like a possessive lover while chewing and rambling at the same time about 'the game' with bits of tomatoey spit assaulting the atmosphere....
Yes, I know it's named after an area of New York, but really, does it sound sexy? I wouldn't be surprised if that area of New York is full of belching hairy Sumo wrestler enviers... Okay, I Wikipedeed it and I'm completely off base, but I don't give a damn. It just has an over the top roundness to the annunciation that is quite a turn off for me, maybe it's because the word bowery is so close to bowel movement, or maybe it's just that nothing about it screams flavor, deliciousness or satiety, but despite all that I have been able to see past my slightly neurotic visions of body odor and back sweat and give old Bowery a shot.
Yes, the Bowery and I had a torrid lust affair for the last few years that consisted of late night drinks and fattening comfort foods... that is, up until 2 days ago. Yes, 2 days ago is when the honeymoon ended. No, I didn't discover the Bowery's gambling problem or porn addiction... but the worst ever scenario did happen... The bar/restaurant that I would have sex with if I could and would most likely need a nap and cigarette after was caught cheating... me out of my hard earned money that is.
Yes, I paid a visit to this New York inspired eatery. Had a cocktail (which was decent) and ordered the moules frites. This has always been one of my favorite dishes at the Bowery. For $12 it comes with a generous portion of mussels covered in a sinfully savory and tangy tomato saffron broth with fantastically salty fries and toasted croutons.... Well, let's rephrase that to past tense... it used to come all yummy and amazing, but like I said, the Bowery cheated. What I was served the other night was not oceanly delights... In fact, and when I say 'fact' I mean absolute documented truth- I wouldn't even serve that crap to a starving balding stray cat even if it was hungry enough to gnaw a bullion cube... Taco Bell tacos are gourmet works of art in comparison to the freezer burned assey tasting mollusks cooked in onions and water that I was served. Not only did the mussels taste of metallic ass juice, the portion was half the size that it used to be and to put it simply, regurgitated Piña Coladas and spaghetti would have probably been more desirable... Okay, yes, I'm exaggerating, it wasn't that bad, but by no means was it good. It was edible, and I ate it.. look it was either that or finger nails with tabasco sauce. I was starving, needed to eat and simply couldn't wait a minute longer for something different to be prepared. I think I wouldn't have actually died right there at the bar of starvation, and I'm far too considerate to bring that kind of bad PR onto the Bowery.
So, I choked down the slop visualizing starving children in 3rd world countries, telling myself how grateful I should be and how blessed my life is. I didn't complain, well, that is until they asked... I just can not tell a lie.... it all came out... I was quite emotional after spending the last 10 minutes of my meal visualizing Babanooey and his ribs poking through his flesh with his 10 children eating rat tails they roasted on the fire for 7 hours trying to kill the inevitable diseases that they probably already had. Anyhow....
They comped the food, but then the bartender started acting aloof and weird, which made us feel uncomfortable- as if we were jerks for mentioning that they changed the recipe completely and it tasted very assey and bad- and we tipped her $20 for 2 drinks, so it was obvious our complaint was nothing personal. Anyhow, I could have forgiven Bowery, chalked up the mussels to Bowery having a bad day, but after tipping very well and being treated like an asshole for responding honestly when asked how my food was... well, I probably will not be back until they have a more professional bartender working... in the meantime, I'd ask for donations to the 'Babanooey fund', but he died, and not of starvation. He was hit by a truck while migrating to another town where his children could drink only slightly mosquito infested water tainted with less than 47% sewage. The vultures ate well that day. It was a tragedy.
My friends and I decided to go for a couple drinks here but we ended up staying there from 6-11pm. Great service, nice wine list, and good food. The crab cakes were actually not a disappointment like most places.... Try the clams or the mac n cheese.
I stumbled into this very NEW York city bar,,,one night last year..during the J . Bidden vs S. Palin debates..My friend who has been stopping off to this chic venue for sometime suggested that I meet up w/ friends...So I did...Not bad..It was nearly dead in there...Most of the people like the bartender/wait staff kepted their eyes glued on the screen..Not bad...They served up my favorite Shirley Temple...04 ...Not a drinker..diabetes folks.........I have been back since..Its always crowed in there...I prefer the patio...By the way...there are always pretty young girls ...for you single boys/men..21-66...who cruise for cotton tail....get it?..Lol..I think I could call this a regular when I'm between rehearsals...or killing sometime w/film industry folk...
Thomas'
So, after a seeing a movie earlier in the night, my homegirl, Walker and I decided to get something to eat. After a few minutes of bouncing food ideas off of each other, we decided to get a burger. She suggested The Bowery and I accepted.
The Bowery is a small, hole in the wall bar located on Sunset Blvd., just east of Vine. Parking is a bit of a bear so if your sensibilities are in line with being anti-valet, like I am, this place is a no go. I drove around a bit looking for an open spot, but since this is Sunset and Vine, finding a spot is almost impossible. Needless to say, I succumbed to the ills of valet parking.
As stated before, The Bowery is a smallish place with a medium sized bar, pub tables/ chairs on the opposing wall, small cafe tables near the front and more cafe tables outside. The decor is clean and modern. Nothing special.
Drink prices are average and the drinks are well made. I ordered a 7 and 7 and it was quite stiff (save the jokes). They have a decent menu with usual American eats, albeit some meals had a culinary twist. The sirloin burger I ordered, which I guess they're known for, comes on an English muffin. It was pretty damn good and their fries are just as good. I think I paid around 8 bucks for the dish, which was fair considering the size of the meal.
Service was excellent. Our waiter was attentive, friendly and personable. Nice guy to say the least.
The reason I gave this place two stars was for it's level of douchebaggery. Not for the staff but for the crowd. An Ed Hardy wearing cornucopia of dipwads. If that wasn't enough, it was a verifiable dude ranch of epic proportions. A sword fest by any other name and the smattering of females that were there were rougher looking than 20-grit sandpaper.
Drinks good, burger great, service helpful, crowd douchey. In a nutshell.
Every time I have been here, its always been a good experience.
The food is always fresh, tasty and well prepared, the staff are always really cool and chatty and its just such a chill atmosphere.
I really like the decor, that is always seems cool even on the hottest of Los Angeles days, plus you can eat outside and smoke if ya wanna!
The beer list is good, as is the wine list, and if you fancy a bite before hitting the Arclight just down the road then this is the perfect place to go, which is nice.
Eh. It's ok.
That's why it's 3.5 stars and 121 reviews.
We went here before going to see Coraline and the matter of the economy and our budget came up.
We realized that the crab and corn fritters, which were yummy, each cost $3..and there was 3 of them. Their size was 2 inches long, by about a half inch thick. In addition to that, we got a bowl of tomato soup, which was fine, for $5.50. That and our drinks it came to $34 and we were still hungry but feeling somewhat jipped.
So again...it's just ok. The prices are high for what you get, the inside was very loud and not much room outside to sit.
Just ok..and we ended up not going to the movie. Perhaps a matinee in Burbank for half the cost is better.
I realize handing out 5 stars is suspect. I really do. But Bowery truly is that good. I had the nice fortune of eating there within a week of its opening four years ago and haven't stopped going back. The food is tremendous -- across the board (though I tend to stick with the Steak Frites, rare, wine sauce, extra crispy fries). I also love the Salmon (bring back the spinach, guys!) and crispy chicken w/ mashed sweet potatoes. A while back, my wife and I ate at Lucques (yes, fantastic too -- but at a different level) and later that week, she told me that she preferred the salmon at Bowery. She meant it. I know a lot of people comment on the Bowery burger -- but, in 4 years I've never had it there. I'm just not a burger guy. My wife loves it. (Maybe she should be writing this review).
Okay, the food's good. But it's the people that work there that push it to a 5 for me. Everyone's always got a smile and ready greeting -- and it was that way from day one. There have been occasional missteps in staffing but those people aren't there too long. There's no pretense but there is a great deal of good-humor. Right now, there's an delightful staff of servers and bussers (oh, yes, bartenders, too) at all times of day who hit it out of the park.
Yes, yes, I'm raving... but it's really that good.
.... but stop changing the Zin every month! I loved the last one... the new one is good, but....
Reality....
PBR served in a can will instantly win me over.
And if I'm also able to order things like tiny hamburgers and sweet potato fries, then I'm in heaven.
Bowery offers all of this, plus it's a really cool little spot. Great to go to with a couple friends for just drinks or you can have dinner if you choose.
For some reason, I have been trying to go to this place since it opened and never got here. Today that changed...
It's an eeny place, very clean, great layout. My confusion with all of the reviews I've read is this place is KNOWN for it's burger, so if you didn't get the burger, you are taking a chance. It is a little overly pricey, but the burger was worth it...
We did get the burger. Mine came with a little extra something-something, that I won't get into detail about (it's something NOT edible) but I do understand that these things happen and did not snap a cord over it. The staff jumped on it and not only made the situation better by getting me a new plate of food, but brought my table little extras and when the bill came, more good surprises.
Now for the food -- the burger was perfect. It was a whole different deal, being on an English muffin and all, but the grilled onions paired with the Gruyere were pure heaven. It was thick and juicy, but not so large that you felt like a glutton. The sweet potato fries were so perfect that my anti-sweet potato lovin' friends even dug in and remarked how amazing they were.
I can imagine that this place would be PURE HELL on a busy night, but on a breezy Sunday afternoon, the music, the staff and the ambience was perfect.
Get the crabcakes. Some of the best the world has to offer.
And go on a night jasmin is working. She makes this spot.
These are all you need to know about the bowery.
And if any of these things aren't there, walk out.
Well, eat first, and have a drink.
...but it won't mean as much without the most talented bar tender on the sunset strip.
Impeccable executions!
My five stars go toward the burgers. and the chimay on tap. and the look-and-feel of the joint.
details: cozy, clean, elegant but not overly priced. reminiscent of a bar/bistro out of NYC, probably in Soho or bordering Tribecca.
note: i only had the burgers - my favorite was gruyer cheese and bacon. real awesome. go.
After a movie, and feeling a little hungry, we called a cousin and she recommended the Bowery. The place is a chic, kinda upscale burger joint. It is a tiny place, and we walked past it twice. We almost decided to go to Magnolia instead, but then realized it was next door. And we are so glad we found it as it was worth it.
The husband and I ordered the Bowery Burger after the cousin's recommendation. The burger came perfectly with blue cheese and between two toasted english muffins.
The staff is friendly and attentive . The beer and wine selection is also great. I recommend this place if you're in the area.
This seems to be my favorite place to go to for drinks and dinner with my NYC friends. Although the food here probably can be found at any other bar/restaurant, what brings me back here is the reasonable prices and atmosphere. This place has a very New York vibe- loud and energetic without being overwhelming or pretentious. But I want to note that their food is really good-- I love their mussels, sliders, sweet potato fries and roasted asparagus. Service here is always friendly and fast. On two previous occasions I've seen Christopher Masterson here (if anyone cares). Great place to come after seeing a movie at the Arclight or after a shopping spree at Amoeba.
Dammit. I was supposed to be studying for my finals!!! But you know how it is.. You go out with your friends to eat and next thing you know, you have a drink, talk too much, someone suggests stopping by a bar, blah blah blah. Next thing you know, you're on Sunset and your Psychology book is hanging out on your desk sending you signals "COME HOME AND STUDY OR YOU'LL FAIL!!!"
Anyway, we were supposed to go to Magnolia but The Bowery seemed more "poppin" so we went there instead. It's a very small spot and a bit cozy. The drinks are good! And we didn't really eat. Just munched on Sweet Potato Fries which were YUMMMMY! But we did see a bunch of burgers pass by us and OHHH they looked delicious! So I'll definitely have to come by next time and give it a try! :)
I REALLY wanted to like this place. It is small, cool looking w/ a huge bar selection and a nice by-the-glass wine selection. The food looked great on paper, and it was one of those places that we just sort of 'found' and tried. But, alas, it wasn't meant to be...
I ordered some pinot noir from oregon, and the BF had a water. Sadly, even though the server said I had chosen a great wine, it wasn't good. It might have been at one point, but it tasted old, like it had been open for too long.
For dinner, I ordered the caesar salad and the macaroni au gratin. The salad was okay. Very anchovy-y. I realize that this is a very traditional caesar ingredient, but I am not a huge fan of anchovy bits throughout the dressing, I would rather have it blended in a little more smoothly. But, I realize that this is my personal preference and the salad, was prepared well. The mac-n-cheese, however, was bad. I don't want to go as far as saying I am a mac-n-cheese expert, but I do like some mac, and I usually try it if it is on the menu. This mac was not good. It was not creamy to the point of being dry, and grainy/gritty, like the sauce had 'broken'. It tasted like easy mac that was made w/out enough water. So, I did what I NEVER do and sent it back. I decided to get some dessert in it's place and ordered the bread pudding. It was pretty good, but a little dry.
The BF ordered the roasted chicken w/mashed sweet potatoes, green beans and bacon. It was really good. The actual chicken was a tiny bit dry (that seemed to be the theme of the night), but everything else was great. He also ordered some girly martini w/ vodka, chambord and pineapple juice. What a sissy drinker!
Our bill came to $58. Pretty pricy, considering she took the mac off the bill, so it was for a salad, and entree, a dessert and two drinks.
So, to reiterate, I really wanted to like this place, and if only one of the things had been not-so-good, I really would have, but sadly, it was pretty bleh.
Burger # 95: Damn Fine on A Lightly Toasted English Muffin
I've been craving this burger for ages. I've heard people talk about this place for well over a year now and finally it was my time to go. Luck would have it that the woman wanted to shop in Hollywood on the way to a horrid night at City Walk, and so we stopped here in between those events. I wish I knew there was FREE PARKING behind the bar, but we didn't. We ended up parking caddy-corner in the Bed Bath & Beyond complex, it was only a couple bucks after we validated at the boba place.
Inside was pretty packed on an early Sunday night. We got a table in the back corner, very dark and kind of loud inside, not very romantic. They had football on two TVs hanging over the bar. After a quick scan of the dinner menu we ordered the mac and cheese plate, spinach salad, and the burger, medium-rare, cheddar cheese, bacon, grilled onions, and lightly toasted English muffin. I also got a 7'n'7 to help wash it down.

The burger came out looking like a rock star. The English muffin was more than a lightly toasted but I didn't care, I was just in love with the bread to meat ratio it provided. The burger was pretty damn good! The grilled onions were hidden under the cheese, which was nice but confused me for half my burger. I thought they forgot them but somehow infused the burger with their flavor. The bacon was top notch, nice and crisp, chewy, and full of flavor, all in one. The meat itself was a little closer to medium than medium-rare, but it was forgivable since the burger was served piping hot and full of beefy flavor. I did wish the burger or our table came with a little salt to help the meat give up more of its flavor, but I was still damn happy with this burger.
Past that, the mac and cheese was forgettable, way too many bread crumbs dried out the dish, which wasn't too creamy to begin with. The spinach salad came with walnuts and candied bacon, it was very meh.

I'd come here again, very good $12 burger, but I still like 25 Degrees better for this style burger.
A few months ago my friends and I hit up the Bowery before catching a movie at the arclight. The location is great and we didn't have a wait which was nice, but the rest of the experience was just sort of weird. So first, I asked out waiter for some bread - actually my exact words were "do you have any bread?". to which he replied "I personally don't. But I could make you some." So we were definitely confused, but did that fake laugh. About 20 minutes later, still breadless, I asked the host if she could check on our bread. She looked at me slightly confused and said "we don't have bread here". Turns out, they don't really, but our waiter cut up a baguette and then toasted it. . .or so it seemed. Then we told the waiter that our fourth was no longer coming, and he kicked the chair. I think maybe he thought one of us must have been a casting agent and he was practicing.
Once our food was brought, it was definitely tasty. I definitely recommend the burger. My only other complaint was that they brought out the wrong fries for my friend's meal, luckily they brought out the sweet potato fries on the side and we got to try both!!
Slightly crowded and a little pricey, but that's partially my fault because I'm a sucker for the double-strength, 8-dollar Belgian beers. The buzz sneaks up on you and so does the bar tab.
Our waitress was super friendly, the wait was shorter than they said it would be, and my sliders were juicy and delicious, so I had a happy time. Love the proximity to the Arclight -- too bad we went to the new Bond movie afterward and ended the night on a let down.
