i love used book stores....always looking for new (to me) ones. but bookies is my absolute favorite. i've been going there since i was a kid, and i'm still getting discounts from the last load of books i brought in a number of years ago. like everyone has said, it's old school. "accounts" are kept on index cards in a little filing cabinet behind the register. their best sellers are always 25% off, and the selection of used classics is gigantic, and so fun to browse through. i can spend an hour in there without even noticing. this is one of the reviews i legitimately did not want to write, because i don't want people knowing about it, but bookies is too great a local business to not give a five star review on yelp. in the past couple years i think a new owner took over, and now they are open 7 days a week, same hours everyday, which is nice....the hours used to be kinda wonky. basically im trying to say that this place continues to get better and better.

Bookies is the greatest book store around. Why not shop at a local shop that gives you store credit for returning your old books? They always have a great selection of books and an eager staff willing to help you find what you need. They will also special order for you anything you want. Truly a local gem.

I've been going to Bookies since I was a kid. We used to take our bikes up there with bags of books to get store credit. They were very kid-friendly then, and continue to be.
It's a very old-school store. All store credit gets stored on index cards (pretty sure they still did this last time I was in this year). They have a "free book" cart for teachers (with ID). I love this place because they have a great selection of new and used books.
Note that store credit means A DISCOUNT on the price on the book, not full coverage of the cost of the book. -

Bookies is a great little used book store.
I used to go there all the time when I still lived on the south side, digging through books of comics and horror paperbacks.
You can find some great stuff there, just as long as your lucky and come in on the right day, as like any used book store. its exciting knowing you can find something awesome sitting there on the shelf someone just traded in.
do yourself a favor and go through their single issues of comics, I've found some hilarious 80's/90's Comics with excellent covers.
Don't believe me? I found an issue of The Punisher where he is shooting a machine gun while wearing skis in the air jumping off a mountain. -

Bookies is the best bookstore to support! It is a book recycling plant. They have a great system where you can donate your books back to them. I purchase all my books from here (check your school reading list -all the books are usually there!) and return them afterwards. I now receive a discount every time I purchase books. Allison has done an amazing job of keeping Bookies up-to-date. They can locate and purchase hard to find books. You will have a pleasant and positive experience shopping at Bookies finding everything you need and much much more!

Love this place. If I have this strong need to read something other than a school book, I'm there. Love the different selections of books and movies.

$5 for a first edition of "for whom the bell tolls." no dust jacket and it's a little dirty, but still!

Really low prices and you can trade your old books for store credit. You can find some really nice stuff here if you are willing to look for it.
