One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
I am so glad my colleague recommended this place to me. Its one of those rests. that I think you always hear about but slips past your mind due to the location and the name.
Trust me, if you are reading this and have not gone, jot it down on paper and make an effort out here.
Probably one of the best run rests. focused on doing american comfort good in a fantasitic style and method. This along with Range are my favorite rests. in the mission area.
Must trys inclue the meatloaf, chicken dish and their chicken liver patte and finally mac & cheese with drunken spanish goat cheese.
Second time's a charm!
Once again, from service to ambiance to food, Blue Plate is a sure winner.
First of all, I arrived late (sorry for the boredom D!). Fortunately for me, they were kind enough seat my friend and start service at our table.
Wine was already-a-flowin' by the time I made my entrance.
Onto the food...Cauliflower soup, beet salad, and veggie tart. Pure heaven. Period. Could life get any better than a Blue Plate entree? Apparently, it could....Desserts. I was a little put off because they didn't have the bread pudding on the menu. I was quickly put at ease with the chocolate cake and mascarpone cheesecake. I love it when desserts are on par with the entree.
So delish. So refreshing. Pure delight. Blue plate, congratulations. You've won my little heart!

What a great change-up from my regular routine.
Everything is solid, from the food to ambiance to… Read more »
Good, not great. First pass on my 'ribeye' steak (didn't look like a rib eye cut to me; since when is a rib a square and barely marbled?) was medium instead of medium rare. Cook's response to sending it back was to deliver it rare. Medium. Rare. Medium. Rare. That's in between medium and rare.
The veggies and bread were quite lovely, although very salty. This would be a 3-star except for the price. Anything in this price range should have much better quality food.
Service was outstanding, though. No complaints there.
Hated it! ( i know a little dramatic)
After 4 years of our friends raving about this place we finally accompanied them. Two stars because no one punched me, spilled coffee on me nor any food poisoning.
Reservation: 8pm reservation - was seated at 8:40 and waited outside in the rain (hostess was very friendly though)
Ambiance: Cute place - loved the artwork but it felt very claustrophobic here. Was continuously bumped into by waitstaff running through (NOT a huge deal at all - just an observation). Small restaurant.
Service: Sat 40 mins late (not our waiters fault) and ordered right away. Food didn't arrive for another hour. I developed scurvy in this time frame. Waiter was ok at best - expected a little more. Never checked in with us until I gave him the "I am going to eat this napkin" stink eye and assured us that he was "all over it" odd...
The funny awkward part was when my friend asked him to recommend a second bottle of red wine or if we should try XYZ wine. He said "OH yeah that one.. um... yeah... its really good... good body... full flavor... I think I had it once... (dot dot dot for full 3 second pause effects). SOLD!!!!
Food: Had the Pork with Lentils. I knew I should have just went to Good Frickin Chicken on the corner for $9! Ok it fell off the bone - impressively cooked! Bland and my lentils were hard. For $24 I want to savor each damn bite! LOL Friends had the meatloaf which was really tasty. Mac and cheese was fine but good spinach salad.
Overall, I wanted to leave saying "Damn I can't believe I waited this long!" Instead I kicked my friend.
I have been saving this Yelp bookmark ever since reading about their bread pudding from Angella S. Recently I invited Angella to return to this place for dinner, and even though they no longer have bread pudding, the experience was splendid and remarkable.
With artwork from local artists that features a wild bull at every turn, this place is quaint and unassuming with a large open kitchen by the front entrance. Although the seating area may look tiny at first, they also have a back dining room before you reach a beautiful garden patio towards the end of the restaurant. With dim lighting and a gorgeous venue, we were fortunate to arrive early to snag a table since those who came later all seemed to have a reservation.
Appetizer: We shared the cauliflower soup and beet salad and it was very good. The cauliflower soup was thinly pureed embedded with cream and a delicate drizzle of oil and lightly seasoned. The salad came with thin pieces of beets with a firm texture covered with fresh watercress, crumbled goat cheese, and low acidic firm cara cara oranges with a mild dressing. I thought the beet salad was excellent.
Main course: Our order of vegetable tart came with a delicious crust that resembled a pot pie smothered by maitake mushrooms and squash to the brim and covered with fresh frisee, pickled fennel supported by light oil and sauce. This dish was beautifully presented and I loved the cooked mushroom and squash combination and ways they intertwined with the fresh ingredients atop. Their red Zinfandel nicely complemented my meal.
Dessert: Our mascarpone cheesecake and chocolate cake was absolutely divine. The mascarpone cheesecake was accompanied with a sprinkle of tiny oranges to provide a bittersweet accent with an equal amount of pistachios on the side. The warm chocolate cake came with a runny dark chocolate middle sitting on top of a fluffy whipped cream that carried a consistency which matches its oozing dark chocolate filling. We were living large by this point as we sipped our green tea while taking in these desserts in small bites--it was timeless. Even though I'm still craving bread pudding to this day, it was still quite a thrill.
Their service was excellent and much appreciated. Our server, Adrianne, was one of the best that have ever assisted my table. I got there early and Adrianne was very kind to entertain me with warm focaccia and wine tasting until Angella arrives. Adrianne was also knowledgeable, attentive, and instrumental in orchestrating every phase of our meal with precision without being intrusive. Here, both food and service were equally excellent as this cute place exudes the quintessential elements to meet my expectations of a great restaurant. Since they change their menu frequently it just makes the place a whole lot more interesting. I would love to come back again.
Our seat next to the window in the back overlooking the garden (get the seat in the back if you're on a date!) = 5 stars
Beet salad = 5 stars
Meatloaf with mashed potatoes = 5 stars
Our server = 6 stars
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place!
Moderately priced comfort food done right. I love the atmosphere too -it's like dining in someone's living room in a cute victorian flat. So cozy.
Note: watch your steps when you leave the restaurant. There is a step down onto the sidewalk. I almost fell on my face. Oops!
Finally went back her last night - the food is still delicious as ever. This time I tried the meatloaf - yum yum, melted in my mouth.
And I absolutely love the garden - next time I'm definitely going to ask to sit outside. It's a little oasis.

This place is awesome! Great for a girls dinner out - great buzz and atmosphere. We got lucky with… Read more »
With a plethora of service people, we waited 75 minutes for our food when the order went in at 6:30 pm. I didnt really see any of the "splendid" service that other yelpers mention.
For cuisine, I'm not sure what the fuss is all about. Locally sourced, yes, but without any creativity. Give the wait and the crowds and the poor ventilation a pass.
Dined here recently for a weeknight dinner.
Food was good (yep, loved the mac & cheese). Service was friendly, if not quick -- seemed I had more attention from the kitchen staff than my actual server -- though there were delays getting my food, for some reason.
Atmosphere was somewhat lacking, at least from my vantage point. I dined solo at the bar. There were two other loud, older gentleman dining at the bar, but most of the front section tables were empty.
All the food items I tried were good enough, though for the price point I'm not sure what makes it a better option than others in the neighborhood, e.g. The Front Porch. It was fine enough, but I won't be rushing back.
Had heard great things about Blue plate - that the atmosphere was super cute and that the food was amazing. Went with my best friend Sarah on a Saturday night - we love checking out new SF restaurants together and were excited. Unfortunately we were both pretty disappointed in our Blue Plate experience.
Food:
We ordered two entrees: one was a white shrimp dish with brussel sprout-orzo and the other a chicken leg dish with chicken sausage. We ordered a side dish of the goat cheese mac and cheese (great call). The mac and cheese was delicious, but we were both glad we split it because it's very heavy. The two entrees were "ok" - the chicken tasted too much like butter, and the "chicken" sausage actually turned out to have pork in it (which wasn't the best since Sarah doesn't eat pork...and it wasn't stated on the menu) The shrimp was tasty but the brussel sprout- orzo had the overwhelming taste of brussel sprouts and not much else.
Atmopshere:
Blue Plate is a super cute restaurant. It's an old victorian turned into a food joint and I love this look. We got one of the best tables in the place - the back room with a window overlooking the garden (which had seating with heat lamps that I would check out on a warmer SF day) The front room sounded very busy and was next to the kitchen however so not sure I would want to sit there.
Overall, I would return to Blue Plate to give the food one more chance if the chance presents itself - the atmosphere was enough to make that happen =)
I'm a fan of Blue Plate! We've eaten there maybe 5x and I felt I should write a Yelp review.
Food is consistently good. I've yet to be disappointed. True, their selection is limited but that's what I like - you know the food is in season and fresh. My fav app there is some squid dish. The lemon sauce is delish!!
I have had:
*pasta
*meatloaf
*chicken
*halibut
*something else I can't remember...
Also, the $1 Oly beers can't be beat! Love that.
We'll be going back again soon I'm sure. Yay for this in my neighborhood.
I've had this restaurant bookmarked for quite some time (since I first laid eyes on it on "Check, Please!") and after what felt like YEARS, I finally got to get my grub on.
Verdict?
Solid 4 stars.
I arrived a bit early for my reservation (which is a must, btw. This little joint gets packed, fast.) and I was fortunate enough to snag a chair by the bar while I waited comfortably for the rest of my party. For the next 15 or so odd minutes, I utilized my time wisely and spent it perusing the menu to figure out my plan of attack for the night. So many delicious choices, oh but what do I choose? decisions decisions...
Our party of 3 ordered:
2 glasses of Cab
butternut squash soup with leeks
little gem lettuces - black arkansas apples, point reyes blue cheese, and fennel crusted walnuts
blue plate Meatloaf w/mashed potatoes and green beans (2 orders)
macaroni and drunken spanish goat cheese
pumpkin bread pudding
The soup was solid. Creamy, smooth and full of flavor. The salad was refreshingly sweet and crunchy. The crunchiness of the apples worked well with the overpowering taste of the blue cheese. The Meatloaf? OMG. I'm not a meatloaf fan of any sort but that was some good meatloaf. The side of the meatloaf had a hardened crust and the insides were soft, juicy and mealy. It practically melted inside my mouth like butter.
The only drawback of the night was the wait for my Mac & Cheese. Since I was on a "diet", I opted for a side versus an entire entree. Didn't work, I ate half of my friend's meatloaf dinner while waiting in anticipation for my cheesy pasta. I casually asked my waitress about my order and she then apologized profusely and offered to comp my dish and give us a free dessert. SCORE!
The macaroni and drunken spanish goat cheese was tasty but definitely overly-hyped. However, the meatloaf/mac & cheese combo eaten together is to die for. Something about the savory meatloaf and creamy goat cheese made me smile in delight as I swallowed that wonderful concoction down. The pumpkin bread pudding came with a sprinkling of crunchy pomegranates that were highly addictive to my tastebuds. One bite just wasn't enough.
The meal was nothing short of fantastic, from the unbeatable service from the hostess down to the wonderful wait staff, the delicious and flavorful comfort food and the dim and intimate atmosphere of this small, yet cozy restaurant.
One tip?
This isn't the type of place where you "rush". This is an intimate dining experience designed for stimulating conversations between friends or lovers over a few glasses of wine and some good ol' delicious American comfort food. If you want fast service, I believe there's a Burger King around the corner.
I'll keep this simple--
The food is yum yum!
The numerous times I've eaten there, I've eaten in the sweet ass back patio (favorite patio in the city)
I find dining in the back patio worth waiting for otherwise, I'd perhaps wait 20ish min max for indoor dining.
Leave it to my husband to find the winners. We have passed by Blue Plate a gazillion times but only went in last night for the first time. The first surprise is the physical space. From the street, all you see is a 12' wide (kind of uninspired) storefront. When you enter, 3 beautiful rooms unfold - with the bonus of a garden. And there's great art and music. I know, this is about the food, but for me, the environment plays a big part in my enjoyment of the meal. Oh, and service - which was perfect. The food? Everything was wonderful. We had sardine bruscetta, sunchoke soup, pork cassoulet and the rosemary chicken leg. The only disappointment was the desert. A thimble of vanilla ice cream in an espresso cup made a very petite affigatto. The Four Barrel decaf though was fab.
We showed up somewhat late and without reservations, and yet we were offered a table for two in the garden. Wonderful table, surrounded by Belladonna plants and small trees, we were in our own little world. The service by Carlos was excellent, and the recommendations were for the Drunken goat cheese macaroni, oso bucco, and squash tart. All were outstanding, the wine was perfectly priced, and it was one of the best meals eaten in the bay area. Perfect night, food, wine, setting, and service.
Meh. The food/price is not worth the shitty service. We were actually ignored for so long (no water, menus) that we walked out. The owner asked what was up and I told him. There are so many good restaurants in SF, I don't do the repeat-business thing if I don't get good service. Go on witch your bad self.
Consistent consistent consistent, great great great, good simple food. So happy that we can always count on Blue Plate for a great dinner and good value for the food and wine served here.
I am not one to name particular favorite dishes, especially in a restaurant that changes its menu all the time, but I have had great dishes that linger in my memory to this day: an awesome beef carpaccio that was topped with cornmeal fried oysters (yum!) and their meatloaf and steak are always great.
Solid and dependable, they are friendly to walk ins and your guests will surely feel happy after leaving Blue Plate.
Quaint place, friendly and cute staff, nice wine list, and relaxed atmosphere. I could only hope that the food could stack up. Well, it blew my expectations away. Best steak I've had in years.
If you've recently recovered from having your wisdom teeth pulled, been imprisoned, or otherwise craving buttery, oil-infused goodness, this is the place for you. It's cute and cozy. Service is so-so given the limited seating. The food pops with flavor. It's so good, it's also sooo bad. I'm not a healthy eater (i.e., a daily dose of cookies and potato chips), but my side order of chard felt like I'd eaten a rib-eye steak along with fried onion rings. I kid you not. The food is hazardous.
This place has a great atmosphere, especially if you get the little back room by the "back yard". I thought the food was good too, especially the watermelon salad that came with the fried chicken.
The problem is... I have been spoiled by the Front Porch. It just doesn't compare.
Some people are attracted to breasts, some people are attracted to legs...
I am captivated and satiated by the thighs, the chicken thighs at the Blue Plate to be exact! And boy, are they stacked. Bronzed, crispy beauties on top of an elegant mound of polenta, and graced with a drizzle and dabble of sophisticated romesco and some escarole to waltz away any guilt from licking you lips after every taste of those heavenly, tender thighs. You with keep eating them, you will finish them, and if you do not, they will be on your mind afterwards.
So the meal was good, it was great, but the service was sweeter. My server Carlos, advised me with excellent selections for every aspect of my meal: the seating (hot dude in my span of vision and great location), appetizers, entree and beverage. I did contemplate getting dessert...but after such pleasurable service i felt so satisfied there simply was no need. I do need an excuse to try something sweet (on the menu). There will be a next time (quite a few!).
i have to say... i wasn't in the mood for americana, but writing this review with a belly STUFFED with meatloaf, i think i enjoyed myself.
ambiance is great. small, but not so small that you can't get a table. service was average enough and my octopus appetizer was good. my friend's sardine bruschetta though? even better.... something about eating someone else's food...
overall, pretty darn good, winter comfort food.
I tend to be the type of person who forgets most culinary experiences unless some aspect of the meal was outstanding. For instance, I went to The Blue Plate with a new friend, who is terrific and incredibly fun to be around. We were introduced a long time ago but we've only recently become what I would call friends. There's something familiar about this woman, even though, in actuality, the familiarity is imagined. But, it's still nice to share a meal with someone like this.
The result is that a good-enough, not-mind-blowing meal-- like this was-- with someone who's not a friend I'm excited to get to know, leaves my brain as soon as it's over.
To be sure, the wine was pretty good (again, not mind blowing, but the price was mind blowingly large). Our salad was tasty and cheesey but a good salad does not make a restaurant legendary. The meatloaf and chicken thighs were got for our entrees were good, but how much can you really do with meatloaf? Even the most incredible meatloaf... is still meatloaf. Plus it was soggy.
The server was inattentive and rushed.
Plue Plate was definitely not bad, but there are a lot of restaurants to try before I go back. Especially given the prices.
We went to Blue Plate tonight and it was horrible...
Chicken dish and pasta almost inedible- along with sour brussel sprouts
squid appetizer OK
server just so-so
this was our second time there and very disappointed
wont go again.....
One time I got so fedup of making all the weekend plans that I requested my friend to just pick a dinner place and email everybody. We went there for dinner on Friday evening! My friend had made the reservation. As soon as I started looking at the menu I realized that they just had one vegetarian entree at that time for dinner. Not just that I am vegetarian but I am also a fussy or picky eater. Well! I did not have much of the choice so I ordered the veg soup, veg appetizer, veg entree (pasta dish) which they had.
Result
Food was excellent. I will go there again anytime.
Service was good! Abmiance was perfect! We all loved it!
KUDOS! to my friend too for making all the arrangements and picking the perfect place.
Solid, filling, tasty comfort food.
Not a place to go if you're on a diet for sure. But a really great place to enjoy a leisurely dinner date.
Snacked on buttery buttery bread and glasses of red wine while we pored over the menu. Had an amazing salad that I think had blood orange, beets, crumbled goat cheese, candied nuts and mixed greens. Also had a side of the macaroni which was very tasty, but very heavy/creamy. ordered the vegetable tart and meatloaf as entrees. the tart was very good - a crispy flaky crust with an excellent combination of ingredients inside. The meatloaf was also very tasty - that really was a huge loaf of meat. While it was very tasty, we were wishing for some veggies ground in with the meat. we did an embarrassing job finishing our plates - I think we only finished half of our entrees and a small fraction of the mac and cheese.. made me pretty happy to eat these leftovers the next day though :)
yup. im a fan.and if you havent been to blue plate, then you are honestly missing out. seriously. the team of 4 chefs put on a great show with amazing food in a kitchen that looks like it would be pumping out eggs and pancakes. but dont get it twisted. these guys know what their doing. instead of diner food, these 4chefs were working like a well oil machine pumping out osso bucco, huge steaks, pork chops all cooked perfect. honestly .. good job guys. as for the front of the house. our host/server was on point as well. not only was she pleasant to look at, but she knew what and when to offer assistance before it was needed. i have zero complaints about this place. i have no suggestions in making this place a better place. all i can say is, sf you MUST try this place. period.
In a word, awesome. Made a reservation on Open Table, promptly and courteously seasted and stuffed with some of the best eats in town. More than being "homey", the cuisine is what you wish home had been like. True, seating is a bit cramped and it can be a tad noisey... but it is really unimportant when savoring these delicious flavors.
I visited the Blue Plate with a group of five so we had a reservation and were seated promptly. It's far from the city but worth the time investment to make it out to this part of town. We came on a warm day so were lucky enough to eat in the outdoor garden. As there were so many people I'm only going to review my meal, I mean really I don't want to keep you all day.
Now for the review: I started with the Mac-n-Cheese just because of the comments on here and it is by far the best in the city. You must try the macaroni and drunken Spanish goat cheese. Totally insane! I had the meatloaf for my meal and was pleasantly surprised. And where yes it was really good and will recommend it to you it may not be the best in the city, but pretty darn amazing. It's definitely in the top 5 and worth a try. Maybe it was that good but the Mac-n-Cheese was still a fresh memory in my mind and I couldn't get over it. The reviews are right that this is comfort food and you will go home with a smile on your face.
The food is good, no, really good, but for some reason I have zero desire to go back here. I find that a lot in SF, great food but once is enough.
Let me tell you about the great food I have. We started off with the Beef Carpaccio - it had watermelon radishes on it! Pretty, a little refreshing and a little weird. Then I got the meat loaf - yum!! And I'm not even a meat loaf person. I think this meat loaf was better as after is had been cut it was basically pan seared on all sides. It also came with mashed potatoes and green beans - 2 obvious favorites. We ended (and were over the top stuffed) with the PB&J sundae. The ice cream was unique - half of the ball was grape sherbet and the other half was peanut butter ice cream. The pound cake that made the sundae could have been skipped. We also had a great bottle of Greek wine.
Blue Plate was highly recommended to us, but I can't really do the same. Go, you'll like it... but if you don't go, you can get really good meat loaf somewhere else.
PS. the seats were uncomfortable.
We played "snazzy restaurant roulette" this Saturday and the marble landed on Blue Plate, where I had been meaning to pig out for quite some time... their legendary mac & cheese instantly qualified it for the ever-growing list of places-I-simply-must-eat. Naturally, I made sure to order it forthwith.
As undeniably delightful as it was (a savory, molten crock of comfort and satisfaction), I must tell you that the whole meal--all 3 courses, every dish--was totally tasty, comforting and satisfying. In fact, they should just change the name of the restaurant to Comfort & Satisfaction.
Crispy chicken thighs on a soft mound of creamy polenta? Yes please. Pork chop as tender as the night? An ingenius pairing of tiny Italian peppers with marcona almonds and silken goat cheese? AND THEN the macaroni, too? Magical.
Also: treat yourself to the pot de crème... you won't be sorry, and you'll never look at a fig with an ounce of indifference ever again.
The Blue Plate should be called the Blue Wallet because that's what you'll have after dropping ~25 bones per entree for "comfort" food that wasn't that comforting.
At our table we had:
-Crispy chicken with polenta - ok. The polenta had a weird fruity after taste that did not go well w/ the rest of the dish.
-Pork chop - came to the table VERY raw. We had to send it back for recooking to avoid any tapeworm misshaps. On the second try, it was cooked appropriately, but nothing special.
-Meat loaf - pretty good. But honestly, I make a better meatloaf.
-PB and J sundae - this was...interesting. An inspired concept, but the execution...not so much.
The one exception to all this mediocrity is the mac and cheese. VERY tasty. The pasta's a little overdone but the flavor and crispy crust made up for that. If I could do it all over again, I would have just gotten 2 orders of the Mac and Cheese and gone to Mitchell's for ice cream afterwards.
so glad i finally got to blue plate - really a neighborhood gem! the 4 of us had a great dinner, with apps, entrees, desserts, drinks for $200 incl tip.
mac and cheese, turnips, lentils, salad to start
veggie tart, gnocchi, meatloaf, and sardine toast for dinner
satsuma sorbet and pumpkin bread pudding for dessert
oh, and several glasses of great red wine, and some after dinner drinks too.
good (if a bit slow) service, super charming atmosphere, delicious and well-prepared food. solid restaurant!
I liked Blue Plate -- a lot -- though I have some reservations about it.
First, it is expensive. For what you get, it's a pricey restaurant. At the end of the meal, we had one entree, two appetizers, one side, and three glasses of wine. The bill -- before tip -- was $100. This was not a lot of food. My girlfriend later reflected that it cost more for her two glasses of wine than it did for her food. True, she ordered an appetizer and a side, but still, value-wise, something is off. One doesn't notice the skewed pricing until the bill arrives, but make no mistake: the bill will be higher than to what one thinks a reasonable sum should amount.
Second, the noise level was off-the-hook. Particularly in the front room. I would explicitly request not to sit in the front room in the future. Every clink and clank of silverware and dishes was disruptive and uncomfortable. There's a lot of hard surfaces and thus a great deal of echo with such noise. Granted, we were there on the early side -- around 6p on a weekend night, before the masses arrived -- and so perhaps will more people the noise from the clanking would abate somewhat only to be replaced by the reverberation of the crowds. It doesn't matter. Sit in the back.
Third, there are a lot of vegan/vegetarians who write about the dearth of selections for people of our persuasion. These comments are not misplaced. There is only one vegetarian entree. There are a few vegetarian apps, and all three sides (the mac n' cheese, the mashed potatoes, and I think it was the Swiss chard) are vegetarian. Despite the menu indicating that there are "No Substitutions," our server informed us that the kitchen would alter a handful of the menu items to accommodate vegetarian requests (e.g., the brushcetta can be made without sardines; the rigatoni pasta with lamb ragout can be made without lamb). While I am not going to slam Blue Plate for not being something it isn't, I do acknowledge that were I to return to Blue Plate tomorrow, I would order essentially the same meal. For vegetarians, the menu is limited. For vegans, don't bother.
That said, the food was delicious. The foccacia served (mostly fresh from the oven) was wonderful. The heirloom tomato salad with fried cheese was good (the fried cheese was great). The drunken macaroni and cheese -- which states on the menu that it's made with goat cheese, but I could taste the sharp cheddar more -- is phenomenal. Really, for a guy who doesn't think much about macaroni and cheese, I fell in love with this. It was spectacular. I would order that mac n' cheese every time I go to The Blue Plate. For my entree, I ordered the Cavatelli (a pasta dish), which is the one and only vegetarian entree on the menu. It was delicious as well (though all-in-all, the macaroni and cheese is better). For dessert, we shared the mini warm chocolate baby cake. Meh. Not bad, not good. I wouldn't order it again, despite the rave reviews from the minions on this site.
Overall, I enjoyed my food very much. The noise, the lack of value (which is considerable), and the limited menu for me combine to detract one star. I'm sure for carnivores that there is much more to enjoy.
Food: 4 stars
Value: 2 stars
Variety (for vegetarians): 1.5 stars
Fanastic, wonderful, unbeatable taste and service.
My boyfriend and I were in the middle of just the most insanely weird Zip Car rental (nothing bad on their part, either by the way) with broken gas caps and empty tanks, on our way to The Front Porch for dinner before dropping him off for a red-eye to Maine. I've been dying to try the place with all rave reviews from Nikki H. and friends, so was feeling pretty anxious when we walked in The Front Porch with only 40 minutes to spare. Being busy, I couldn't get the hostess over quickly enough and we soon realized there was a line of 20 minutes in front of us. So we hit up the Blackberry to find The Blue Plate comes highly recommended.
As we walked towards the door, we realized it look pretty packed too and hesitated, but Christina, the hostess, stuck her head out and asked us to come in. I asked if she could seat two for a 40 minute in-and-out dinner. At first, she wasn't sure, but after explaining the car fiasco and rush since we couldn't get into The Front Porch, she immediately found us a nice table in the back and made sure to tell our waiter our deal.
Ed came in under a minute, giving us just enough time to drool over the Meatloaf and Southern Fried Chicken and decide our order. We hesitated a bit on drinks, so he excused himself to get our orders in right away and told us he'd be back. A few minutes later, we settled on Santa Rosa "death and taxes" Stoat, which Ed highly encouraged with our meals, too.
Right on. The beer, which as soon as I tasted realized I had had before, was smooth like a Guiness, but with a chocolate finish and exactly what my boyfriend was craving. My fried chicken came next, with a delicious side of buttermilk dressing you want to bathe in and a crisp watermelon and cucumber salad that nicely balances out the heavier textures of the meal. I wish to god I could make my chicken taste this amazing when I cooked it! I had a really hard time getting my fork over to the meatloaf in time, as Zach utterly demolished it and the bed of mashed potatoes underneath with compliments the entire way through.
We came to Blue Porch at 9:05 and were out the door by 9:45, and got to the airport just in time. I can't thank Christina, Ed and the kitchen enough for making our dinner so awesome on such short notice after having such a disastrous night and us being in foul moods and all. Plus I left my scarf and the staff kindly is holding it with my number until I can get over to B.Heights again. I will definitely return, and not just for my scarf.
Solid pick. Really awesome garden/patio in the back if you want a corner to yourself. My friend Sean from Google now is a cook there now; awesome surprise! He used to run Cafe 150 at the Goog (they could only source food that was 150 miles from Google). The food in that Google cafe reminded me of Blue Plate.
The pork chop was perfect. You can't do better. Definitely the highlight. The prosciutto w/ figs was a great starter. The portions were super Mike friendly. You won't go home hungry :).
All around all-star meal.
This is a gat restaurant with great food. We did not have a reservation, but tthey sat us in the most romantc seat in the house by the window looking over the beautiful garden. Our waiter was super nice and helpful. I would go back!
Always...will always... LOVE this place.
Straight to the heart.
Worth 6 stars!
They occasionally have bitchy staff but, i'm willing to overlook that once that big fat pork chop is filling my mouth with it's juicy pleasures.
(Cory, if you're still there, You Rock!)
such a hidden gem in the mission. the food was tasty and well presented.
we had:
parsnip soup (sweet and tasty but not overwhelming)
calamari salad (very tender and not chewy)
steak (flavorful and cooked to perfection)
we had wonderful service.
looking forward to going again!
Blue Plate, I miss you. When will I see you again?
