6 reviews for The Block at Big Bear
came up here to cover hot dawgs and hand rails. the hotel was booked in advance by our production company, so i had no idea what we were pulling into when we arrived the first evening.
the lot was FULL of youngins, all presumably there for the event as well. the party was ON. open doors and invitations for just about as much debauchery as you could handle. at that moment, i wasn't too excited about our current accommodations. i was quite sure my sleep would be obnoxiously interrupted throughout the night, and it was already limited to begin with.
turns out, that although the party lived on well into the early hours of the morning, i had no such interruptions. Morning came, and around 10 or so, a tent was set up in the lot, under which a bbq had started and again, we were met with a barrage of invitations.
this went on all weekend. the main theme - party and have some fun. relax and enjoy. come sunday (our last night) we were finally able to partake in our own festivities and everyone partied with us.
bottom line, this place is FUN. everyone who worked there was extremely helpful and super cool. they definitely offered a stay you won't find anywhere else in big bear.

OK...just that they make this place way better on the internet than it really is....but I will give them 5 stars for being so friendly and attentive. I mean you can't really expect much more from this tiny little boarding town...it thrives on its tourist attractions and not so much on their accommodations..The room was kind of beaten up and not as colorful as it was online...we didn't get a flat screen in our room, but I didn't really seem to mind at the time. I came here for NYE about 3-4 years ago. Obviously our motive was to go snowboarding and enjoy getting to know the town of big bear. Ever since then we have frequently visited our favorite spots..I don't necessarily recommend staying here if you want 5STAR service or a bell hop to assist you or room service at 4am...because thats not what this place is about.

I have just a couple of words for you regarding this Suckalicious Sadness. RUN AWAY FAST!
Probably one of our worst hotel experiences ever! Got lured by a great hotel logo, and a hip snowboarding-themed website with really nice photography (clearly they hired professionals to do that part). Paid top dollar- almost $200 on Expedia for a "modern room".
Only to discover this is a cheap run down old motel that somebody purchased and then painted with 'bold color theme'. Rooms were really tiny, with worn-out ikea furniture, stinky, dirty... The internet didn't work.
They first erroneously gave us the keys to somebody's room. We open the door, and what do we see? Beer cans all over the place, dirty sheets (as if somebody made hot love for 24 hours nonstop) and a toilet full of orange piss.
What else is there?
Pretty much a ROYAL FAILURE on my side- I should have done a better homework researching the property before booking. If you ever trusted anyone, please trust my word on this one. RUN AWAY FAST!

I read all the reviews before checkin' in.....ALL two of the reviews. I do pay heed to what real people have to say about places but for this one, I decided to see it for my own self before judging....
My fiancee and I stayed here for the spring break weekend - they were having an event called "three nite stand". The perks were free BBQ, free Pabst (cheap a$$ beer if you didn't know), Free VIP entry to all parties, Free gift bag, Free entry to all contests, free lift tickets to Bear Mountain. The hotel also already offers free energy drinks, cup o noodles, popcorn, movies and video games for the room.
It all sounded fun and exciting... but again reading the reviews I didn't want to get my hopes up. So.. I'll start with the cons...
1. Annoyingly loud twenteen year olds running around obnoxiously
2. The difficulty checkin in while trying to talk over the loud dj music at the front desk lobby
3. The supposed VIP entry - - everyone got in the same way whether you had a VIP bracelet or not
4. No such thing as free lift ticket - we still had to pay for ours but they gave us a discounted rate
5. The free beer was PBR - Pabst Blue Ribbon! diiiiiisgusting.
PROS
1. The room was clean and nice. Contrary to another review, the sheets were white - no brown speckles of stuff, the big screen tv, ps2, clean towels, cute furniture - sorta ikea-ish.
2. Board racks! I really liked them and i'm thinking about buyin one for my place
3. Free food!
4. Friendly staff (some more friendly than others - flashing her headlights everywhere) and guests
5. Fun atmosphere - unpretentious atmosphere
All in all we had a great time staying there. Maybe because my expectations were already set low so I wasn't let down. If we go back up with a group of friends, I wouldn't mind staying here again. If you're looking for a place to have a romantic time or for a family vacation - I would recommend looking elsewhere. This place is more for the beer guzzling young adult party scene.
i think mfm is kind of a douche but his hotel gets credit for being the only lodging i know of that is built for snowboarders. some may balk at the price ($220 for one of the themed suites) but i've paid roughly the same amount to stay at the holiday inn at mammoth. just the way it goes if you want to stay close to where you shred, i guess.
we stayed in the spy room, which was pretty decked out with contemporary digs and a big screen hdtv. but it seemed kinda silly to have an hdtv when there is an absence of hdtv signal. i really liked the huge boarding photos that decorated the walls. they advertise as having free pbr's, which is true save for the fact that each guest gets two cans per night. so much for my idea of getting plowed on comp'd brews while the snow was falling.
overall my stay was mixed. on the flip side of the cooler aspects of the block was the fact that the wc in my suite was more closet and less water. there was a shortage of towels and the shower curtain was not faking the funk.
what bumped the block up from 2- to 3-star status is the waxing room set up on the far side of the property. it was cold and poorly lit but that spot alone may be enough to compel me to make a return visit next time i decide to spend the night at bear. after spending upwards of $20 on a wax job, this feature does pretty good at off setting the lodging costs for a pair of mountain sliders.
