A mini-review.
My teaching assistant brought in a whole mess of cakeballs for the last day of class. Had she been a student, I would have given her an "A" for anything, and everything, right on the spot. Oh my God, these cakeballs were maybe the best treats I can remember. Ever. Even I, a lifetime member of Weight Watchers, dived right in.
I had one each of the following: French Toast, Vanilla Sprinkle, and Triple Chocolate.
French Toast: to die for. Encouraged me to reach into the box and keep on sampling.
Vanilla Sprinkle: 10 times better than I thought it would be. Sprinkles aren't my favorite thing in the world, but this was absolutely delicious.
Triple Chocolate: smooth, creamy, out of this world. Given a choice between hot sex and eating one of these, I don't know which I'd pick. Hot sex burns calories, and triple chocolate cakeballs add calories, but good God, these things are fabulous.
I ate these three cakeballs at lunchtime, and did not need to eat anything else for the rest of the day except one string cheese and an apple.
I would like to put my face into a box of cakeballs and just inhale them. -

If I had the option of giving this place no stars, I definitely would.
I work at an office in the Loop that celebrates each and every one of its employees' birthdays with a cake (which stacks up to be, like, 5 or 6 cakes a month). When I began working here, we chose what kind of cake and where it came from. But late last year our company started this whole 'sustainability' thing that required all cake orders be placed through Bleeding Heart. I've passed this bakery many times and, I gotta admit, I was totally stoked to try their cakes (I'm all about a cool logo). Unfortunately, the logo seems to be the only thing cool about this place. The first cake we got tasted like sawdust, the second didn't show up at all (AT ALL), the third tasted like sawdust again, the fourth was over an hour late and was apparently iced when the cake was still hot because we basically got a box of pink soup when it finally did show up and the last cake we got (just this past Friday) tasted (and looked) like sand. It got to the point where people in my office were just passing on their cakes... And when someone passes on free cake (especially the people in my office), you know it's really bad.
Thankfully, our office has collectively decided that we won't be ordering anything from Bleeding Heart in the future and have thus taken our business to Crumbs (which is just absolutely wonderful).
Also... I've read several negative reviews that have gotten responses from the owner of Bleeding Heart and this is pretty much how all those responses go: 'Blah, blah, blah, your fault, blah, blah, excuse, excuse, blah, your fault, your fault.' Seriously... Someone needs to take a business course. Right after you take a culinary course. -

A-OK is a good way to describe Bleeding Heart Bakery.
I was really excited when we stopped in here because I have seen shows that covered Bleeding Heart Bakery, I have heard people tell me how great it is, etc..so my expectations were pretty high.
We walked in overwhelmed with the amount of choices. I felt like a good solid brownie but was quickly convinced another route by the girl behind the counter. She mentioned they're really known for their red velvet cupcakes and their cakeballs. Given they were out of almost all their cupcakes I switched over to cakeballs.
I had vanilla sprinkled cake cakeball, red velvet cakeball, tried a piece of the triple chocolate....husband had the french toast which he said was very tasty.
The vanilla sprinkled was only "ok" for me. It was white cake covered in white chocolate and sprinkles. Loved the sprinkles, not so much the white chocolate or the cake. There wasn't much flavoring to this cakeball in general. I wouldn't get it again.
The triple chocolate cakeball was way too rich for me. It tasted similar to the way my Cherry Merry Muffin doll smelled (she was a doll from the 90's).
That being said, the Red Velvet Cakeball was REALLY good! I could have eaten a couple of those but after the first 2, thought I should go easy on the sugar for a bit. I would HIGHLY recommend people try that one.
I would like to visit again and give it another shot because maybe we came too late in the day and I did only try cakeballs, but I can't say I'm overly eager to run in and try more.
The decor inside is funky which is much different than a lot of bakeries - I was kind of indifferent to it. I was more focused on the food. :) -

I have been 2 Bleeding Heart twice in the past week, so I feel like I gave it the old "college try" in rooting for this place.
The reviews that have been posted in regards to sanitation and service are absolutely true, and in trying to think of words that describe Bleeding Heart, the following come to mind:
Pretentious
Rude
Lazy
Dirty
Negative
ICK
The same girl was behind the counter both times we were there: short, blonde with glasses, and so obviously NOT wanting to be there it was ridiculous. I am a manager in retail and if myself or my employees acted like her, we would not have jobs! Both times we were there, the bakery was having issues with Groupon customers (refusing to fill there orders and explaining some secret Groupon Reservation that clearly pissed the Groupon-ers off. Note to business: If you run a Groupon, be prepared to actually be able to FULFILL it).
Both times we ordered coffee and the sugar and milk dispensers were empty and the area itself was very dirty. On our last visit, we asked for a quiche, and when the girl pulled it out of the display case, a woman who appeared to be a manager told her not to sell it b/c it looked "CONTAMINATED" (her word, not mine!) and the lazy counter girl just stared at us and said they were "actually out of quiche today." WHAT????
Their cupcakes and coffee are actually good, cake balls are gross (but so is every cake ball I've ever tasted, I have no idea why these are trending right now). However, the service so so rude, and the people who work there have such ugly and negative personalities (IN A BAKERY FOR GODSAKE) that I will NEVER go back and will try my best to make sure none of my friends do either.
The modern world of service is a world in which service matters and consumers have a strong voice. If you value friendliness, service, cleanliness and other small businesses around Chicago, you will NOT give your patronage to Bleeding Heart Pretentious Arrogant Lazy Rude Dirty Bakery. -

So I'm writing this review without having tried their food. Yes, this may be unfair but I tried to buy something but the service was so bad that I left empty handed.
I wanted to pick up a quick dessert and was in the area so I decided to try bleeding heart. I walk in and I was immediately welcomed by the overpowering smell of smoke, so much that my eyes were burning. Even though I didn't like the idea of my cupcake sitting in a room full of smoke I decided that I would still try their food and give them the benefit of the doubt.
So I wait in line, their was 1 employee there who carried on a very long and drawn out conversation with each person he was helping. He really seemed to be enjoying himself as he chatted about different areas in the Chicago and he talked to a woman inquiring about employment, among other things. Not once did he turn to the other people in line and apologize for the long wait or try to speed up the process. So I thought that I would go next door to Tony's burrito Mex to pick up the food I ordered (which was very good) thinking that the line would be shorter by the time I was done. I return to the bakery and it's the same B.S. this time with a longer line. I wasn't having nearly as much fun as the employee. I just left without getting anything, glad I didn't support this place. -

Delicious!
I purchased a groupon to use at Bleeding Heart Bakery. Totally worth it! It felt like a steal, $14 for a huge box full of delicious treats can't be beat. I really love their take a hike scones, perfect fuel before a long run.
Their jam bars are also very delicious as well.
The store itself is really cool and interesting, both its facade and the inside and the girl that assisted me was really nice. -

I came for the tasting pack by groupon and was pleasantly surprised at the quantity and variety of items in a box. We got
cake balls - YUMMY! moist inside and crunchy outside.
scones - ok, slightly dry and exceedingly large
cupcakes - mini ones that are good and moist
brownies - fudgey and delicious!!!
key lime pie - good but could be tangier.
i think the desserts are overly sweet but well made.Listed in: Best Desserts

The fact that they have vegan options here is cancelled out by the chocolate covered bacon.
Bacons not cool. Get over it.
2 stars for the poor attempt at including vegans... but we'd rather you not. Purely bad taste. -

Growing up in Roscoe Village I always wished for a bakery like this to sprout up in the neighborhood. It's rather fortunate that it wasn't until after I moved that BH showed up or I would have ended up on the Springer show talking about my cake ball fetish.
Let's be honest, if you have ever been there...you have a cake ball fetish. I don't know what I enjoy more, the beautiful people behind the counter or all the delicious that they put in my mouth. -

Oh God...I'm going to have to find yet ANOTHER medical issue that prevents me from ingesting sugar... at least that's the alibi I need to feed the witch that keeps bringing those damn Bleeding Heart Cupcakes to family affairs...
I may be one in a million, but I do NOT find Bleeding Heart baked goods delicious. Or tasty. Or moist. Or barely edible in a few rare instances that had me running for the water dispenser. The flavors aren't unlike anything I can't find at other bakeries, and the cakes are not moist. I appreciate their catering to dietary needs and social stances, but if the product isn't good, it isn't a win for me.
I know I haven't had my last BHB cupcake/cake/pie/torte, I just hope the next batch has just a snip more moisture in them.Listed in: I Like Sinning

We had our wedding desserts catered by the Bleeding Heart Bakery. I'll say right now that the food was great, and that if was all I was reviewing, it would probably be 4/5 stars.
However, the catering was something of a mess. We were under the impression the dessert was supposed to arrive by 1pm. At 3pm, one hour before the ceremony, I called to ask what was going on. I was told we ordered the food to arrive by 4pm. This didn't quite make sense because we had planned for months on our ceremony starting at 4pm. While we weren't positive what we had just been told about delivery time was accurate, we had other things to worry about and even delayed the service so that everything wasn't happening at once (our wedding was very small, with the ceremony and reception in one room. The idea of cupcakes being set up while we said "I do," wasn't terribly appealing).
By 4:15, we had heard nothing and proceeded with the ceremony. At 5, we started feeding our guests with no dessert on hand. Finally, by 5:30, while our guests were eating, the cupcakes showed up. Again, this was a small wedding, so while the BHB staff was professional, there was no way that it wasn't distracting. The food was ready 90 minutes later than the time that was later than we had intended (4pm, rather than 1pm).
Again, if I was just rating the cupcakes, then there would be no issue. And, realistically, the dessert being late wasn't the end of the world. However, for the amount that we paid, and how much care goes into Bleeding Heart Bakery's food, this was a very unexpected experience and very disappointing. -

I had a red velvet cupcake from here. It was very dry and the cream cheese frosting was not good at all..i dont think I have ever said that about cream cheese frosting.
I had a brownie that was absolutely delicious.
I liked that there was a wide variety options at this bakery, however I am not sure that I will be returning due to the red velvet cupcake that I had. I love red velvet cupcakes and they are the only reason that I usually go to bakeries. -

I am a huge fan of sweets and have tried a lot of the gourmet bakeries around Chicago. But time and time again Bleeding Heart disappoints me.
I only live 2 blocks away, so maybe this is a good thing, so that I'm not tempted to overeat on the reg, but I have now been 4 times and each time leaves something to be desired.
I've tried the Smores Brownie - very dry, two different cupcakes (Chocolate and Peanut Butter Chocolate ) that had a moist cake portion and a stale icing - makes me wonder how long these cupcakes sit out. Also tried the Bacon Chocolate Chip cookie which mostly just tasted like burning.
This last time, however, I tried something that was amazing. The Carrot Cakeball. Really moist and delicious, just perfect. However, the price was not. A ball the size of a munchkin from Dunkin Donuts was $2 with tax, for something that is bite size?
The cupcakes are around $3 and much smaller than their counterparts at Mollys or Crumbs. -

I know that cupcakes are all the rage, but when you come to Bleeding Heart Bakery, you MUST have the brownies.
They are some of the best I've ever had and if you're the type who craves interesting flavor combos, they've got 'em. The s'more brownie is excellent with it's fudgy goodness broken up with pockets of grahamy awesomeness and dots of gooey marshmallow. So. Good.
All the things I liked about BHB in my last review are still true, but I just had to give a shout out to those awesome brownies. Go get 'em!Listed in: Village Person, Call me Roscoe

mmmm.... So good... Such an amazing cake. For a friends birthday, I decided to give this place a try, I got a devils food cake from there and it was the best cake that I ever had... The only problem was the fact the I purchased too big of a cake, but that was my own fault, and couldn't blame them for that. Not only was it the best devils food cake that I had ever had, but the artwork done on there was pure perfection. Not only was their product amazing, but the employees there were extremely helpful and went out of their way to make sure that everything was exactly how I imagined it to be. When I went in, I was not totally sure how I wanted it decorated, and they continued to work with me and show me options till I felt confident that I found what I wanted. I recommend this place to anyone who wants a top of the line cake that is very reasonably priced. I would expect their prices to be twice as much for the product and service that they provide. Thank you Bleeding Heart! GO HERE!!!

I also got the groupon variety pack and was more than satisfied with its contents. Cake balls (chocolate, vanilla, red velvet, carrot cake), cupcakes, brownies, and the best part to me - the scones!!! I think they were the harvest scones and they were packed with hearty goodness. They are super filling and I only got through about half of one before I had to quit. They would be good on their own, but I paired them with some apple butter and it was really good. Everything though tasted fresh and delicious.
I've also been there another time to have the Veruca Salt cupcakes, as recommended to me by my cousin. They were fantastic. Actually, for my cousin's birthday, I gave her a gift of some Veruca Salt cupcakes and a cook book written by the Bleeding Heart owners that contains the recipes to some of their treats.
Both times I was there, the workers were friendly and helpful, not at all rude or pushy. They were working quickly, to try to keep the super long line at bay, but I understood.
I will be back to enjoy more of their fantastic treats. -

Had the peanut butter chocolate cupcake.
This is one of my favorite flavor combinations. This cupcake was not tasty at all. The top was hard, dry, and too sweet. The cake was very dense and too heavy tasting. As I was choking down my cupcake, because I refused to throw away an expensive pastry, I glance over at my fiance gnawing on his brownie like a chew stick! I told him to be careful so he doesn't break a tooth! The Old Fashioned brownie was so hard you could chuck it at a window and cause damage.
I won't be going back. Too bad because we were considering them for our wedding cake because their decorations are so cute and well executed. (hence 2 stars instead of 1)Comment from Michelle F. of The Bleeding Heart Bakery 8/17/2011

I wish I liked this place, but it's like going back to an ex.
It always lets me down.
1 star for offering vegan options and 1 star for having good decorations on their cupcake.
But the staff is always so cranky. I don't get it - you work at a bakery. I always think of bakeries as being full of happiness and sunshine and deliciousness. Would it really be so hard to at least fake it for me?
Also, while it's awesome that they offer vegan options, it'd be even better if their food was tasty. The brownies can't hold their shape, the cupcakes are dry and lack flavor, and the cake balls are disgusting (I'm not sure why anyone likes cake balls... they don't even sound tasty).
Save yourself some money and just buy a mix. -

I tried this place with the groupon sample box and had a not so great experience like some other reviewers here. The first time I went and tried to use my groupon the girl behind the counter said that they had given out their quota for the day and that I'd have to get there earlier if I wanted the deal. Wow, it didn't say that anywhere on my groupon but I came back a few days later and was able to get a box after waiting in line for quite a while behind a couple of indecisive ladies who ordered fancy coffee drinks. When I got the treats home and started sampling I experience some very good and very bad baked goods.
The good: Awsome cake balls! Little donut hole sized concentrated three bite treats. Very rich, moist and delicious. German chocolate, double chocolate, and something else. All excellent! Also, the scones were very dense, filling and fiber rich. Heavy duty healthy tasting breakfast or lunch snacks.
The bad: Godawful vegan brownies! Dry, strange, unfriendly and mean even. Just terrible! Worse than dog biscuits and much more expensive.
Go to Blue Sky for brownies!!! -

I bought 4 cake balls for my friend's birthday and I was so disappointed. They were pasty and too sweet.
I would have gotten cupcakes but I was on my bike and they would have been destroyed.
I was also put off by the fact that it smelled like a stale smoker's room at a hotel. That is not ok for a bakery. -
Review from Izzy N.
Best bakery in Chicago? As if! But it's not so bad, pretty good actually but not all that. What did I get??
-chocolate chip cookie
-cookies and cream cakeball and red velvet cakeball
-old fashioned brownie
-smores brownie
-key lime bar
Yeah sorry I'm greedy. Not. This was for sharing with my friend that came along. We wanted to try a little bit of everything. Except for cupcakes cuz I just don't like them. My only regret was the cookie. I prefer my cookies chewy and this was more crispy and crumbly so not my cup of tea. The 2 different brownies were chocolately and rich but tasted the same. Pretty good though, it rivals my other favorite that's from Ghirardelli's. The cakeballs were alright, being really hard and crunchy on the outside- which worried me- but was really moist and rich on the inside. Shame on me for judging so quickly! The red velvet was definently the better of the two. I would pass on the cookies and cream cuz it's pretty much just chocolate.
My favorite out of the bunch was the key lime bar. Lots of lime flavor and super rich almost the texture of cheesecake. This is really good and I would get it again along with trying one of their cherry dipped ice cream cones next time!! That is my all time favorite from Portland- cherry dipped cones!! Hope it's good here.
Speaking of Portland, I'm homesick and this place reminds me very much of Portland that it can fit right in, in any of our districts except for say the Pearl. Down to the attitude, clientele, the staff, the place itself and the vegan options. Very Portland even though I know this has nothing to do with Portland. I liked it. Not so cutesy and prissy. But I'm going to run over you with my bike sort of vibe. Know what I mean?? Haha jk.. sorta. -

"Meh. I've experienced better." That's Yelp's descriptor that pops up when you're about to rate something two stars. Trouble is, "I've experienced better" in my own kitchen. If I can make a better cupcake at home, why am I going to bother with this place?
They're all flash and no substance. I really don't get what all the hype is about. Maybe people are intrigued by the look of this place or by their cute decoration--I'll give them credit for being able to decorate a cake. But seriously, the cake itself is underwhelming at best. The cupcakes I got when I went in were heavy, crumbly and dry, just not what I'm looking for in cake. Were these old and stale (in which case why are they selling them?) or does Bleeding Heart just put all their effort into the look of their cake and not bother with flavor and texture. The icing didn't taste *bad*, but it was also just too heavy and gloppy.
There are too many good bakeries in this city to bother with this place. Go someplace else. -
Review from Rose A.
I wanted to try Bleeding Heart Bakery as I've seen them on TV a few times. I picked up a Mango Limeade cupcake, a Chocolate Hazelnut cake ball, a French Toast cake ball, and a Banana Fudge Walnut Brownie.
My least favorite was the French Toast cake ball. It was way too sweet and didn't really taste much like French Toast. The Mango Limeade cupcake was kinda tasty. The Chocolate Hazelnut cake ball was pretty delicious but just a tad bit dry. My favorite was the Banana Fudge Walnut brownie - very decadent.
I wouldn't mind trying their other goods... -

Driven by this place for three years... and the curb appeal called to me! Finally, I got to come in. Punk Rock + Cupcakes? Who would have thought! It's awesome!
Free wireless, amazing chai tea latte and a highly recommended spicy dark chocolate cake ball.
The creativity at this place is oozing out of every corner and the staff are friendly and excellent at what they do.

Great products here and very tasty. Have not had anything yet that was not good. Sometimes they appear a bit understaffed and there's a wait but usually it's worth it. Regarding their vegan options: I'm not a vegan but appreciate that they have some vegan products. In another review a vegan complained that they shouldn't have products with meat in them in the same store. I disagree. They're just attempting to give options to their various types of customers. If I liked candy, I wouldn't chastise a candy store for also selling both regular AND sugar free candy....

I really wanted to like Bleeding Heart. It's organic! Locally owned! Innovative!
Unfortunately, I'm just not a fan of the results. The staff is friendly. The decor is awesome. I like the lemon bars and the cake balls but the cupcakes are just kind of meh. Except the Veruca Salt cupcake was kind of gross. I can sum things by saying they are no Sweet Mandy B's. -

Amazing cupcake!! Vegan Chocolate Rasberry decadence!! This is a wonderful place that is beyond worth going to if you are ever in Chicago. Yummy! I am from CA and I will hit this place each and every time I am in Chicago. It is not only delicious it is superbly decorated. I love it when you can absolutely tell that the owner is living their dream! A+ job on the decor. The only downside was that I am allergic to dairy and the vegan chocolate items caused me to have an allergic reaction from the cross contamination of all the dairy stuff. If they were able to purchase a parve chocolate or just make sure that the dairy does not come in contact with the vegan stuff they would have 5 stars for sure. :)

Stopped here after running the Ravenswood 5k yesterday. Both the cake ball we ordered (double chocolate) and the whoopie cushion (chocolate with espresso frosting in the middle and espresso beans around the outside) were rich and tasty. Their drip coffee was good (which I seem to have a hard time finding of late), and they had soy milk and sugar in the raw available, both of which I appreciate. It's a little on the pricey side, but it's cool that they can cater to health issues/desires and try to keep things local.
My major complaint is that I felt the staff was pretty rude. As soon as we walked in, I didn't feel so much welcomed as I felt stared at. After checking to make sure there was no gremlin head sprouting on my shoulder, we approached.
You're a bakery. When I ask what you suggest if I want something sweet to go with my coffee and I like chocolate, I expect you to have some answer aside from a snarktastic "Well everything here is good". Ok, I'm not saying everything there isn't good- however a) obviously I am not going to order 1 of everything and b) I am clearly looking for a few suggestions based on your experience and my likes to narrow down my choice. She also seemed to have a problem with people asking about prices that weren't very clearly marked- sorry, I just wanted to make sure that fancy cupcake wasn't going to cost me my first born child. Excuse me for asking.
This place would have fared a lot better if they had more friendly counter staff. Also of note, there are about 3 tables, so seating is limited. -
Review from Roxy A.
I went back here a couple weeks ago & was feeling extra fatty so I decided to order the Mexican Hot Chocolate cupcake, Bacon Chocolate Chip Cookie & Smores Brownie. I ate the cupcake there & also ordered an iced tea.
Out of all the treats I think the brownie was the best thing & that was only after I put in the microwave at home to get it all gooey & warm. I gotta say I didn't care too much for the Mexican Hot Chocolate cupcake..the cake itself was a bit too dense & there really wasn't much chocolate flavor to it..mostly just the pepper & cinnamon flavor. I was really excited about the cookie but it wasn't very chewy..it was a lil more on the crunchy side.
Maybe I just ordered all the wrong things & maybe w/ my last experience of going there for the Johnny Cupcakes tour waiting 3 hours in the rain I had a hyped up mentality that I was just happy to get in there regardless but idk my last experience @ BHB was just A-OK. =(Listed in: i HEART CUPCAKES!!!

Everything is good.
Aaaaaand now that I found out I'm a glutard, and can't eat most of what they make (without feeling like dying, at least), HEY GUESS WHAT THEY HAVE GLUTEN FREE STUFF!!
I highly recommend the gf cupcakes. The cookies could be improved a bit, but I swear they get better every time I get one so I'm crossing my fingers that one day I will walk in and they will be perfect.
I recently had a bbq and bought a whole lotta cake balls. Guess what was demolished first, pretty much before the other food? Cake balls. Cake balls. Cake balls. -

My mission is to eat my way through the various bakeries and cupcake-ries throughout Chicago. My goal: to find the best cupcake out there.
After all the recommendations and positive reviews, I could not wait to get to the Bleeding Heart. What a disappointment. I've given them two chances, once back in 2009 and once this last week. I don't expect the halleluia chorus when I bite into a cupcake, but I also do not expect dry, tasteless cakes with crusty frosting. I should have used both cupcakes as door stops rather than desserts, I would have had better results. Won't be back. -

I really really really wanted to like this place. I really really did.
My mother took me here after I proclaimed my new-found Veganism to everyone who would listen. When we first arrived, I thought "Punk Rock? Pastries? Vegans? What could go wrong?". Everything apparently.
Ok, the inverted cupcakes are cute, I'll give em that. What is NOT cute is biting into a cupcake and having it be so dry that you cough and little bits of dry cupcake-dust get everywhere like you just downed a can of finely-ground wood shavings. Not. Cute.
The second time I came here(I was desperate) I ordered the hot chocolate because a bakery cannot possible mess up a hot chocolate can it? It tasted like somebody melted down some bittersweet chocolate chips and added water to them. No thank you. The two stars are for them being vegan, not for them being competent bakers or baristas.Comment from Michelle F. of The Bleeding Heart Bakery 6/23/2011

Review from Caesar R.

This place was great. A little bit of sweet sensory overload, which lead to a very indecisive having to try 3 things. Their coffee (iced latte) was good and strong, perfect for Sunday morning. Also, as an organic bakery, I saw no sign of any artificial sweeteners around, yeah!
We wound up getting the s'mores brownie, the chocolate chip cookie, and a red velvet cupcake. The chocolate chip cookie was pretty darn good, not my favorite, but still worth getting. The red velvet cupcake one of the best from sea to shining sea. Oh yes, that is a lot to live up to in this cupcake crazy country. And the s'mores brownie, not overly powerful on the s'mores taste, but delicious brownie overall.
Lots of things to try at this place. And their single serve cupcake container is pretty cool.
