I came out for the State of the Union address watch party. May be a corny reason, but I'm really glad it got me to the bar.
Truthfully it's just a regular bar. The perks are it's really pretty laid back. The staff is ridiculously nice. I ordered the chicken nachos and they were great. Also at our table the Cuban sandwich- delicious and the beef tacos- wonderful and filling. The drinks were spot on and not too crazy expensive.
It's definitely a new spot to hit up whenever I'm in the area. -

This place is boring & a suck!
The drinks were watered down & the service was horrible! Every time I approached the bar for a drink, I had to wait 20 minutes for service.
I was at a birthday party here, and all the guests complained of the same. -

This is a great neighborhood pub/ sports bar that always has sports on, They will usually change the channel for you, if its not busy and there's a game you want to watch. If you want to watch soccer or rugby, this is the place to be.
Great bears on tap, awesome bartenders, awesome owners that actually get to know their customers. The food is hit or miss. Roomy, very comfortable. I dont live in the Slope anymore but this was my hangout when I was there.
With regard to staff complaints: there was one bartender that was kind of a dick but I think they let him go. -

This is our local and we effin love it.
Here's the breakdown: Staff are friendly, veggie nachos are great, beer selection is varied, atmosphere is better than nice. The owners are friends with some of our other local haunts and it's really nice to see them support each others ventures.
When games are on, it gets loud and sometimes crowded, but it IS a pub, so love it or leave it alone. -

Went here for a beer and a burger dinner and ended up getting the shepherd's pie. It was so good but way too large to finish. Inexpensive beers round out the meal. Haven't been here to just drink... I wonder what the board games are for?

A good place to watch the English Premiership games, but otherwise, a fair bar. The food is okay, not great. I have no qualms with the staff that other people seem to have, but then again, I've really only gone there to watch the soccer games... and the more the staff leaves me alone, the less guilty I feel about sitting there for 90 min nursing a beer (because really, I'm not into binge drinking at 10am).

Every time I end up here I get angrier with myself. It is terribad. And the staff are awful. And it is stupid and expensive and they screw up your drinks.
It's just too close to my home.
Grrr.
I feel I have to add: yes they do show sports a lot. No excuse for being bad at everything else. Anyway so do other places. And so does my television. -

The first time I went to Black Horse Pub was after reading a small article in the Brooklyn Paper back in November of 2009. A good friend of mine had been trying to get me to watch Premier League football for about a year, so reading that this place was an authentic English pub which would be showing Premier League games I suggested we give it a try. Since that day, I refuse to go anywhere else.
From the moment we walked in at 10AM my friend and I were treated like royalty. The place had just opened and it was pretty much empty save for the bartender, owner and owner/waitress (who I would later discovered is a rock star from another planet). I asked the bartender what he liked to drink and he suggested to me something I had never had before, Speakeasy Prohibition Ale out of the tap. This was a life-changing moment.
Throughout the course of the 10AM and noon Premier League games we sat, drank and spoke to the staff. During this time we had drunk a few pints so the bartender offered us a shot on the house and poured himself a pint. By the time the 2PM Serie A Italian game started we were drinking about 5 fingers of single malt Scotch, as generous a pour as I had ever seen. At one point I received a shot of Laphroaig, generally consumed as a sipping Scotch, on the house. Why? I have no idea (I probably asked for it), but I wasn't complaining and neither was my friend. We were too busy laughing and conversing with the staff to care. At 5PM it was time to go and we received one more shot on the house before we left. We settled up with the bartender thanked the owners and walked out.
I've been back to Black Horse countless times since then. Many times not to consume alcohol but to enjoy their unbeatable Full English Breakfast or Shepard's Pie and just hang out with the regulars and staff. It's the one place I can go to by myself and still be confident that I will have a great time and be engaged in good conversation with decent, working-class people. They have a great atmosphere for sports, but also the awareness and class to turn off the TVs when appropriate. For instance, the night of Hurricane Irene the place was jam-packed and turned into a full-blown dance party, complete with DJ.
Go for the rotating selection of quality beer on tap, stay for the people. -

There is no reason for this bar to exist. Wait, I take that back, there is one reason. The only good reason for this bar's existence is that it keeps Americans who fetishise British culture ever since returning from their study abroad semester in London the fuck out of of my face. The type of idiots who rise at 8am and put on their wooly scarfs to come down here and yell 'good cross!' and 'Chew-sea! Chew-sea!' in faux British accents at awkwardly placed plasma screens scattered about this warehouse cum barn monstrosity of a drinking establishment. Perhaps they manage to flag down one of the perpetually high / hungover waitstaff to order an outrageously overpriced English breakfast complete with half raw fried egg and millimeter thin, immolated black pudding shaving. Perhaps they go to Park Slope Chip Shop instead? Fish n Chips, mate, innit?
You would think a party of 6 forced into this dump by necessity and a sporting event and racking up a tab of almost $200 would have something comped or at least a round bought back. You would think a bar that charges $6 a beer in a neighbourhood dotted with bars that sell the same for $3 would go out of business. You would think a restaurant that literally doesn't know how to fry an egg or cook a burger would not survive in Park Slope. You would be wrong. Apparently there are enough morons and desperately homesick Britons prepared to shell out top dollar for this, but it gets a star for confining them in this hangar so that my dealings with them are limited. -

I'd definitely recommend checking out Black Horse if you are a sports fan (especially a soccer fan). Frequently have any game you could ever want to watch on one of their TVs (and if they don't they will very likely put it on for you) The owners and staff are incredibly friendly and help to make the atmosphere very relaxed and enjoyable.
Very good beer selection. The best buffalo wings anywhere in a 5 block radius, but they're a little pricey. Rest of the food is okay.
Very much a sports bar/pub feel, not really a great "singles" environment. -

I would have given this place three stars, just based upon the fact that they played Irish music all night long on St. Patrick's Day. The Chieftains, The Dubliners, The Pogues...I was in heaven! I also enjoyed the witty banter with a quasi-attractive blond waitress.
That said, the service was apallingly inadequate. A friend of mine ordered a chicken sandwich that never arrived, even after he had waited for over an hour. The waitresses flitted in and out-not the most attentive bunch. I didn't eat anything, so I can't speak to the quality of their food. Still, they deserve credit for keeping the spirit of St. Patrick's Day. -

They should just call the place "Bar." It has no character. Decent beer selection.

Review from Ian J.
Average beer selection, pretty good service at the bar, and plenty of space. Which is uncommon for the typical area bars. Overall I enjoy this place. No real complaints.
They have tv's if you want to watch a game.
And hey, the taps aren't infected and dirty, so the beer tastes as it should. I think 3 of my previous "favorite" bars have lost the ability to clean tap lines or spouts. So this is a definite plus. -

Where is a good place to go to watch soccer, even when it's NOT World Cup season?
This place.
Where is the bartender, more drunk than any of the patrons?
This place.
The place is huge, and looks like it has some serious drinkers inside.
Not my thing when I'm just passing through the neighborhood, but all in all, lots of big screen TV's, and a relaxing feel to the atmosphere. -

I'm a fan cuase I befriended the owners of the place. I see many people who don't share my opinion but like that matters. Who can deny hospitality (with the regulars) and free drinks to accompany it. Not I !!!!!!!! Plus they put up with my occasional dancing when the music isnt really something that you can dance to or should!?!. Havent been in here for awhile to see my good ole boy; who breaks on the one and two.( Must return to see his performance!!!!!). I also need to see my man, whose a afro indie artist, that got moves like James Brown. Oh dont forget the cute wife of the owner who "jokingly" tells everyone off. Then just basically everyone who has an accent. Shall I make a toast? Cheers to the comradery and all the accents that accompany it!!!!

I went with a group of friends to this pub on a Saturday night to watch some college football, eat, drink, be merry. The space is a large rectangle with the bar running along the right hand side wall. There are high tables with 4 seats, a long table in front and some tables outside.
Beer list is ok. A lot of taps -- $6 drafts. Bottles are few.
Food was hit or miss. We ordered the nachos with shredded chicken and it was good, the wings were not, the steak sandwich was good but not worth the money, fries were great.
Service: There service last night was awful. Our waiter was not attentive, not interested and at times nowhere to be found. At the end of our night I had to address the bartender to try to close our tab, which she couldn't -- it took her 15 minutes to find our waiter who was outside "in a deep conversation".
Ambiance: This is a bar that shows soccer games right? Well last night there was a struggle between the DJ and the crowd (small) which was there to watch football. Instead of making a decision we had a battle of volumes between the TVs and the DJ --- nobody won.
Smoking: I know smoking has been banned for awhile now, but with the windows open and people smoking in the front area by the doors it made it as though folks were smoking in the bar.
All in all the place is pretty standard with substandard service. I'll think twice before going back. -

Ever feel like you are being suffocated by the tiny bars and restaurants in the slope? Maybe its just me, but this place is refreshingly airy while still maintaining that cushy neighborhood feel Park Slopers have come to love.
Great beers on tap, friendly staff, nice spot to watch a game or catch up with friends. -

Let me start by saying that it was much better than I had imagined. Upon may passing by's, the overwhelming sound of sporting events filled my ears and made my boner shrivel, theoretically speaking of course. However, needing a slight change from the norm (Sidecar, yum!) we decided to try something new when this noise was non-existent! The beer was a bit overpriced to me, we should've opted out of the pitcher. No biggie. The wings, eh? Nothing at all special. But, the veggie nachos??!! Loved. Plus they were playing some really fun 90s music that I love/hate. All in all, I appreciate this place as a change of pace. I'd go back. If I needed a switch from the Car.

Dear Diary,
Welp, Yelp. I've said it before and I'll say it for the rest of my life: Times Are Tough.
My life is a mess, punctuated by the following:
-- Pizza delivery
-- Booze
-- Watching Dating on Demand videos
-- PhotoSwap on the iPhone :( :(
-- Comparing my life to rom-coms
-- Trying to get my parents to love me for who I am while also slipping me a $20 or two
You know. The usual.
So sometimes a boy just needs a spacious, charming Brooklyn bar. He also needs a satisfying beer (or two), a delicious cheeseburger cooked to medium perfection, and fries with curry sauce.
And sometimes the bartender looks into this boy's puppy-dog brown eyes and, realizing that February is a tough month for everyone, hands him a third beer on the house.
Free booze to help get over your SAD: Big in 2010, y'all. -
Review from Danny P.
One of the new marketing strategies for bars in the South Slope is building their den of alcohol-infused iniquity is to generate some hype by announcing the bar will be opening, let it sit dormant for a few months while you work out all the legal haranguing required to open a bar in New York, let locals walk by dejected because this awesome-looking bar isn't open, and then surprisingly open just when we're sure it will never happen.
It's gold, Jerry.
Such is the case for the Black Horse Pub, who used this effective marketing strategy to entice customers for the last few months, slowly building a buzz that resulted in packed houses the first few nights after it opened last week.
The first thing you'll notice is how big the space is -- the way the light works, it doesn't look nearly as big from the outside as it does once you're in the doors. There are great seats next to the windows that extend almost a quarter of the way down the block and then wrap around onto 16th St., giving it that 1994 coffee house feel that everyone so loved in Singles.* Plus, the ceilings are really high, meaning you never feel claustrophobic, even when the bar is crowded.
There are a few tables right in front of the entrance, with a row of two and four tops down the left side of the space. The bar occupies the right side of the area and has hooks under it for hanging your coat or purse, though they could probably use a few more. Considering we were there on opening weekend, and during the day when it was less crowded, I felt it ok for me to start making recommendations and asking for my favorite additions, including a foot rail which the owner assured us was in the works. I need a foot rail, man ... some of us just have short legs.
They have 16 beers on tap, all for $5 except for Delerium and Guinness, which are $6 each (a completely fair price if you ask me). Bar snacks are coming as soon as the kitchen opens but one of their highlights will be the full English you can get weekend mornings when you're rolling in at 8 am to watch Fulhamerica take on whatever English powerhouse they're doing battle with this week. It's a Brit-lovers dream.
The rest of the bar is sparsely decorated, as you might imagine, with a majority of the artwork dedicated to their favorite bands -- Massive Attack, the Clash, the Smiths ... well, you get the idea. And while you're likely to get sound for the morning and afternoon footie matches, it's going to be music at night (which, the night I was there, was a bit of an odd mix of upbeat dance music -- not bad but not what I was expecting).
Just an excellent, friendly place which is as close as I've found to a local since I moved out here. I reserve the right to up this to five stars once the menu comes out.
* - I'd like to move to 1994 Seattle as soon as we get that time machine thing worked out. -

I remember buying hard-to-find spices here when this space was a "specialty" bodega.
It was a fairly tiny bodega, as I recall.
How is the Black Horse--created in the exact same space--so friggin' deep? Did I open the door and walk into Narnia?
Well, the Narnia of beers, maybe. Monty Python beer? You got it. Yes. Monty Python beer.
And it's sometimes open at 8:30 a.m. on Saturdays for soccer/cricket games. Or if you just want to get drunk at 8:30, I suppose. Both reasons are acceptable at Black Horse.Listed in: South Slope favs: The List*

4.5 stars (pending the opening of the kitchen)
Grand opening: October 22, 2009! Finally!
16 beers (okay, there's delicious cider too) on tap at $5 a pop (though Delerium and Guiness are $6). Full English breakfast during early footie/soccer matches and a Sunday night roast with Yorkshire pudding... mouth is already watering. The kitchen won't be open for another week or so but we were treated to pizza courtesy of Toby's on Saturday afternoon.
According to Danny P., the place was pretty busy on Thursday and Friday night as he strolled by & stopped in. The bar itself was pretty full on Saturday afternoon, though the tables were empty. That's fine, it gave us a chance to get to know the awesome bartender and owner and owner's wife and the guy who was putting on the soccer/football games and the people next to us (didn't hurt that we shared cookies with them too)...
Bar is spacious, too. There's plenty of seating and room between the bar and the tables so I'm hoping on a busy night you won't be crushed. The tin ceiling is super high and painted black. The wood of the bar is dark, but with so many windows in the front the place does not seem cavernous at all. After 8, on the weekend nights I'm guessing, the sound on the tv will be turned off in favor of the jukebox mounted on the wall. The jukebox with a picture of Massive Attack on it... to compliment pictures of the Clash, the Smiths, and other British bands on the wall. "A Brit lover's dream"? Hell yes.Listed in: Drink! Drink! Came here for World Cup action and a good number of large LCD HD TVs. The beer selection is average. The food is average. They are cheap on the fries. It felt like it was one potato. My friend and I were still hungry and we ordered a plate of wings. The wings were OK, nothing special and not very meaty.
Service was great especially considering the crowd. -

We went on a Sunday at 2PM hoping for a full English breakfast, as the website promised they would be serving them until 4:30. After asking two different employees a total of four times, we found out the "stupid chelsea fans ate it all and it is finished." We were told to stick around for the Sunday roast and told it would be ready in 30 minutes. Over an hour later we got our $19 meal (for one order) and it was not up to par. The vegetables were tasteless, the meat chewy, the gravy flavorless, and the Yorkshire pudding deflated. Food like this is the reason English fare gets such a bad rap.
Our waitress seemed to be drunk and was flirting very inappropriately with the dude who seemed like the owner. The beer selection is decent, but with a very limited selection of English brews. We won't be going back. -
Review from Adam R.
I wanted to withhold judgment on Black Horse until I visited several times. Now that I have, I think four stars is a fair rating (rather than the three that seem appropriate at first glance) for a few reasons...
Rotating beer list includes local breweries - I was a little upset that the first times I went there was nothing from Brooklyn Brewery or Six Point. Now there is, and life is better. While I would not recommend this place to beer aficionados, they do a pretty good job at getting some good beer in there.
Food - My biggest problem is that I don't really like the chips. They're sort of bland and usually underdone. However the bangers and mash are decent. And I've also noticed that the food (as well as the vibe) is pretty authentic to England. You don't go into a pub in England and expect great food, you expect sort of greasy pub food, which is what they have here.
Also worth noting, the owners are very cool and look out for their patrons. The music is good, and it is deceptively large. Even when the place gets kind of crowded, it doesn't feel uncomfortable. -

We stopped by on Tuesday night after voting for a couple of beers. The crowd was mild, the beer selection was mighty fine and for $5 and 20oz pints, I certainly was not complaining.
We will definitely check it out again, maybe even sample the full English breakfast or Sunday roast. There is something on the menu called Gypsy bread that seems interesting enough, we actually got a full description from the chef himself. Seems like it is a savory version of french toast he invented with his sister as a kid.
All in all, the atmosphere seems good, big bar, lots of tables, good beer selection. -

I really wanted to like this place. Before they opened they even had a vegan Sunday brunch item. It seems to have gone away. Yes, I'm a vegetarian but that doesn't stop me from drinking a lot of beer!
Anyway, it's a huge place with a long bar and a pleasant decor. They have a decent beer list and the wait staff is friendly.
So why don't I like the place. It's too LOUD!!
We met another couple there a couple weeks ago and had to leave after we tried yelling at each other for 20 minutes in a futile attempt to have a conversation. Why, oh Why do so many bar owners think that everyone wants to sit and be drowned out by annoying music?
This place will soon be relegated to the 20 something crowd and become just another 5th ave bar. Come on, cater to the 35 and over crowd. We have jobs and can afford to spend more than $3 for a happy hour beer. And we tip better. -

Went here for brunch two weekends ago and would certainly go back for brews, though not brunch.
Let's talk about the "veggie English breakfast." It's Heinz beans, two eggs, and toast. I recall some half-assed vegetables on the plate that I thoroughly ignored. Originally the eggs on my plate were so underdone, the whites were still translucent. When I asked for them to be cooked a bit more, the waitress was very apologetic and accommodating, and it was obvious that she knew they were undercooked to begin with. Why did she serve them in the first place? I can't be sure. Judging by her lack-luster performance the rest of the morning (messing up orders, forgetting silverware, not keeping up with refills on coffee, dropping shit, overcharging us on the bill, etc etc etc), I can only assume she was hungover or still drunk from partying the night before. She was friendly, to be sure, but that doesn't compensate for being THAT bad during a near-empty brunch service.
Wow. I didn't realize I had that much to say until just now. I'm still keeping the 3-star rating even though brunch deserved 2, because the service snafu was a one-time things and their brunch service could evolve. 3 stars for location, good beer, and potential. Jolly good. -

The Black Horse is fairly new and extremely conveniently located (for me!). A nice space, large beer & liquor selection, and good for big groups, plus I enjoy the britpop mix. They also have food. I don't want you to get the wrong idea and think that the food is really good, but I like it better than most american pub food. I like the eggs & beans. The curry is weirdly bland and I agree that the chips are nothing special, but overall I'll take this English stuff over a bunch of greasy fried things at another bar.
That being said, the service is atrocious, with a ditzy waitress who is more interested in flirting and checking her phone than actually waiting on tables. I've been here three or four times and this is a consistent problem. The bartenders may be good, but I've never sat at the bar (full of football-watchers and a surprising number of regulars for such a young bar). -

A short review only based on 1 drink on Thursday night.
We were really looking forward to the opening of this bar in the southern parts of the slope.
The owner had renovated the space quite some time ago and the summer passed before they obtained their license.
We went on Thursday night, the second game of the World Series was on all TVs and the place was nicely crowded for a pub that just opened. The choice of $5 beers was really great and I enjoyed a Prohibition.
I won't mind walking an extra few blocks from Quarters or Ellis if they ambiance and the drinks stay the same. -

I wanted to watch the FIFA 2010 UK vs USA match with a crowd of passionate football fans. And the The Black Horse Pub hit it spot on.
Owned by a Brit and frequented by New Yorkers and tourists, the bar had an even amount of fans from both sides. It also had ample space to hold the rowdy crowd. The numerous, well-mounted, large screen TVs guaranteed that even someone short like me could watch every second without interruptions.
You also can't beat having 16oz pints at $5. And they have hard liquor for those who don't prefer beer. As for the food, my friend ordered the sausage roll and liked it. If you're like me and willing to spend money on "an experience", feel free to order the $5 English Crumpets. Otherwise, you're better off going there for beer. The other food, seemed true to run-of-the-mill English pub fair at NY prices. But then again, no one was really there for the food.
The waitress was nice but extremely busy given the occasion. I guess all the locals know her and thus she got a bit distracted weaving in and out of the crowd. However she did get our orders right, bring back our drinks and check to see if we wanted anything else.
If you're looking for a place to watch football (not the American kind, although they show that too) and (I hear) cricket with avid fans, this is definitely the place to be. -

Since a lot of the bars were packed on a Friday night, we were looking for a nice place to sit down. The Black Horse pub was pretty empty and had plenty of tables with a good selection of beers. The crowd is much older, but at least there were a few tvs to watch basketball, baseball, and golf. The only problem that I really had with this place was the service. Since we were sitting at a table, I expected waiter service but our waitress never came around and we waited a good half hour until I actually got up to the bar and ordered some drinks. Then after an hour, the waitress came and asked if we wanted anything. But we didn't hear from her after that! We then saw her talking and laughing with her friends instead of serving us. What kind of empty bar has such terrible service??

I was disappointed when I found out that the new place opening next to Sidecar Grill was going to be a pub, as I'm not much of the bar-going type and always appreciate new food options, but this place actually turned out to be kinda cool. They started off with almost no menu but have since expanded from burgers and mash to some appetizer options and other types of sandwiches... all of which (that I've tried) are pretty decent. The place is HUGE so you never feel cramped and they have live music on certain nights of the week. The people who work at Black Horse are also all super friendly and that's always a big win in my book.

This is the best place in Slope to watch un-American football while drinking in the morning, period. There's not a bad place in this big bar to grab a seat to enjoy the game from. This is not really where I would come to eat, but the bacon or sausage rolls are good and filling and a better choice than the pricey and deadly full English breakfast if you want or need some ballast in the morning. Their lunch/dinner menu is okay but there are many other places nearby to decamp to for food.

So glad the Black Horse Pub opened just a block away from where I live! It's a beautiful set up, clean, stylish, and comfortable. There's a great selection on tap and almost all are $5! BHP tries to host a number of random events with specials- back in Feb for Mardi Gras we were given multiple rounds of free shots of hurricanes. The world cup games drew huge crowds, but thanks to the high ceilings somehow the bar didn't ever feel too claustrophobic... generally though, BHP isn't much of a party spot, it's just a good low key bar for grabbing a pint or two and hanging out with friends.
