    Woodstock, NY

    4.0 star rating

The Woodstock area is filled with hip and pricey restaurants. Some are good and some are just pricey. While I have lived in Woodstock for almost a quarter of a century I have had a love hate relationship with the restaurants. On the down side, there is a preciousness and "in" feeling that many of these establishments have that makes me feel "out". The Black Bear is a happy exception.

At first I enjoyed breakfast at the Black Bear. The atmosphere was welcoming and as much Hurley, Glenford and surrounding area as Woodstock. That is, it was unpretentious. The coffee could definitely stand improving. But the  breakfasts were wonderful.

Then I tried dinner at the Black Bear. It was amazing. The onion soup was an instant trip to Paris. The chicken Francaise was mouth watering and even the mashed potatoes were superb.

I love the Black Bear. The price is right. The atmosphere is welcoming and the chef/food is really fine.
