84 reviews for The Beehive Salon
One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
Quite honestly, the best haircut I've gotten in recent memory. Eileen did such an amazing job, I basically just told her to do something fun and exciting with my hair & I've gotten so many compliments on the style she gave me that I can guarantee I'll be visiting this salon on a regular basis!
By luck of the draw, I got an appointment with Jeff my first time here. I've been back to him two or three times since, and I've been SO HAPPY with each cut. Prior to becoming a Beehive/Jeff devotee, I'd become accustomed to a 50% success rate with haircuts. Now I don't have to settle for such nonsense.
Jeff specializes in curly or textured hair. My hair is half normal white-person, half Asian and kind of coarse...not particularly difficult to deal with, but having someone who understands that kind of hair (like Jeff!) makes a huge difference. He spends a lot of time before the cut trying to find out what you like and hate about your hair, how it normally behaves, how you'd like it to behave, etc. He also takes special care to show you the best way to wash, dry, and style your new cut. He'll advise you as to what products are best for the results you want, but he doesn't maniacally push products like some stylists tend to do.
The prices are reasonable, especially considering the level of service and attention you receive. Jeff is a "Queen Bee Level" stylist and last time I was there (mid-June 2009) his wash+cut was $78. The salon atmosphere is comfortable and relaxed; I'd say for those used to shi shi Manhattan salons, this place is very "Williamsburg," kinda alternative.
The upside:
Friendly Stylist.
Great Cut.
Convenient Location (for me)
Cheap
The downside:
The low-back chairs are horribly uncomfortable for a 6 foot male like myself.
Some of the stylists smelled like smoke.
So, there you go. It was Ok.
I have notoriously difficult, thick, curly hair which I am now growing out from a pixie cut to something shoulderlengthy. This is not an easy process and I've found myself going in and out of mulletude, as the top of my head is significantly shorter than the back.
I got a little extra money so I decided to take care of the mullet in these horrible interim stages of hair growth. I called, I asked who was available, I was assured Ria was a junior stylist who was good with curly hair and was available that very afternoon. I'm notoriously cheap, so I went for it, although I had my trepidations.
Well, she did not disappoint! She asked about my typical texture and day-to-day routine and she did the bulk of the cutting dry, never once brandishing a razor as so many lesser skilled stylists have done in the past. I got a nice wash with No-Poo, a dry, and then some cleanup. My hair is unruly but she tamed it! I've been getting compliments since I walked out of the salon with my cute new curly bob.
If you have curly hair than Tiffany is your girl. I am a cheapie and previously only went to salons that had student haircuts but those take so long and sometimes still I was paying $30 or more. Tiffany is already trained and does a great, fast job for a very reasonable price.
I go to the Beehive to get my hair cut by Carol. Carol is a really professional hairstylist who knows what the latest styles are, and she communicates so well with you about what you want and what she can do to make it look even better. She will give you a haircut that compliments your hair type, bone structure and personal style. I live in another city now and I can't find anyone who can cut my hair like Carol, so I try to wait to get my haircut until I can get back to NY to see her.
After a year filled with BAD haircuts and even worse hair-days, I decided to stroll down the block to Beehive Salon after reading some positive Yelper comments. I made my appointment for a Wednesday, as they are currently having a special for newer stylists, $40 for a ladies cut! Unbeatable. I was secretly expecting some quick half assed snip for that price. Was I ever wrong!
Although I had to wait for 15 minutes after arriving spot on time, I was so entertained by their decor and stack of recent mags to care. Then Sean did a little assessment with me, something more in-depth than I'm used to.. and I'm hooked. Sean solved all the issues I had with my hair, as well as threw in his own expertise to give me a better cut than I had in mind! I will definitely going back.
I just returned here a 2nd time and had Tiffany as my hair dresser. I didn't have to wait at all, which was great considering I showed up a little early. I didn't have very specific instructions for what I wanted (basically, I wanted to keep the length, but have more "style"), and she seemed to get what I meant despite my lack of specific requests. In my past experience, when I ask for something kind of vague like that, i don't usually get much in return, but she actually gave my hair a lot more style than it had and took the time to refine the cut.
For some reason, I remembered this place being cheaper (like $50), but this time it was almost $70, before a tip. But I left feeling good about my new cut, and even got a few unsolicited compliments, so I'm satisfied overall.
I've been to the Beehive 3 times now. Not a single person there remembers me - and they always ask me the same boring questions when I come in. Where you from? Do you live in the neighborhood? Omg me too... blah. Just cut my hair ya kno? I don't need to be chatted up. The first two cuts I got there were pretty standard, mediocre, nothing special.
ANYWAY - the goods. I went in for a bang trim yesterday and I asked for them to just clean them up a bit and make them more funky and choppy. I had them sort of off to the side, after a straight across bang catastrophe previously, I was hesitant to get them done that way again. Well, the guy that was trimming them said, 'I kind of don't mind straight across on you' and just HACKED THEM OFF without even consulting with me if it was okay or not. Now i have this uneven "choppy" hack job, a day before my birthday!!!
I will not be going back.
I went to Beehive for this first time past Friday. Jeff was my hairdresser and I couldn't of asked for a better hair cut!! When I went in the only thing I knew I wanted was to keep the length. Well apparently he is a mind reader cause he gave me exactly what I wanted even though I didn't even know what I wanted. As well he was so informative about curly hair, he told me all about the best ways to style and wash my hair. I would recommend Jeff to anyone who has curly hair and wants a great haircut. I will defiantly be going back.
The salon was very nice and the workers were very helpful. They also have a great selection of products but don't push them on you. As well for a NY salon, I thought the price to be very reasonable.
Why all curly girls must see Jeff immediately:
- He knows curly hair. He's been practicing the "devechan" method for the past 4 years and his clientele is almost exclusively curlies
- He really cares and wants to do a good job. Unlike my previous stylist of the past 6 years at one of the top curly salons, he spent over 10 minutes playing with my hair just to get a sense of it and ASKED me what I want I wanted. He then spent an hour cutting my hair, unlike my aforementioned previous stylist who would spend 15 minutes.
- He respected my wishes, gave me an awesome cut and didn't butcher my hair. Knowing that I was extremely nervous about getting layers, he was very conservative in his cutting and explained everything he was doing. Instead of running out of the salon to go put a bag over my head, I couldn't wait to run around to show off my cut
- He personally styled my hair. No pawning off to untrained assistants here. He even shampooed (well, no pooed it) himself.
- He didn't push product. I actually inquired about purchasing the product he was using and he told me to wait to make sure I liked it first
- He seems like an awesome guy with a great personality.
- The price. $78 incl tax. Almost 50% less than those other curly salons.
What else is there to say? If you have curly hair (even extremely curly, like mine), go see him.
I went to Beehive religiously, specifically Andrea, to have my wacy/curly locks cut. She always gave me an adorable cut, and my bangs were perfect, albeit the whole thing was quite simple.
I made the mistake of "cheating" on her once, and went to Medusa in Park Slope -- I lived to regret it for an entire summer.
I'm still growing out that whole mess, but when I'm ready for another snip-snip, Andrea will still hold my heart.
Went here last Monday to have a hair cut with Sean. My sister has been doing my hair for the last 10 or so years, so I was very hesitant to get my hair cut by someone else. I told Sean I only wanted to take a little off and leave the length, not too many layers and razored a little on the ends, but after talking to him I felt completely comfortable and gave him a little more freedom with the cut. He gave me some really nice layers and razored the ends like I wanted. It came out so cute, I love it! Thanks Sean!
Overall the experience was great, the salon was really nice, and most everyone was friendly. I will def go back to see him for my next cut!
I've been to many spas to get massages, but PIXIE is the best I've ever had... SERIOUSLY her intuition and memory is amazing and she is very nice and firm-handed. go to her now!
You can tell that the staff here take pride in their work in the amount of effort they put into your hair. I used to have bleached platinum blonde hair (I have naturally black Asian hair) and have gone to many colorists who have either burned my hair off, made it way darker & more orange than I wanted it to be, or made it patchy. Jayna took extra time to make sure I had the color I wanted and made sure it was all even toned while still letting me keep my hair. Definitely the best out of the many hairdressers I've gone to...
I have also received haircuts from various staff members at Beehive & have not been let down yet! Everyone has always been extremely attentive, helpful and friendly. It doesn't hurt that The Beehive itself has a great atmosphere & feel to it to!
I went to the Beehive again because I liked the way my old haircut grew out. After a while it started to curl up nicely and the sides got longer. After a week or two, maybe once I realized I needed to stop straightening it and let it air dry, I started getting A LOT of compliments on it.
My next hairdresser was very nice. I told her I wanted layers cut so that they would curl naturally. When she was done - granted it was still wet - I didn't like the way it looked. It was too safe and boring. It just looked like bangs in the front with layers all around. I asked her to cut it shorter in the back. She agreed. Then I wanted it even shorter. Okay. Shorter!
Anyway, I came out with a wacky inverted, graduated bob.
But I take responsibility for that one. I guess I wanted my hairdresser to reassure me and maybe be a little more forceful in explaining her vision before my strong personality took over. I think she was new and kind of shy. Overall, there was a lack of understanding, communication and unified vision.
It wasn't so bad.... yet. Then I tried to fix it on my own by trimming the dangly front parts. BIG MISTAKE. (story continues at Jean-Louis David)

I'm not a picky hair model at all. Most of the time I cut it myself or have a friend trim the back.

I left my trusted hairdresser back in DC and was wary of having to pick someone new and winding up with crazy hair.
Yelp to the rescue! I went to Beehive based on reviews and it was fantastic. I was lucky to snag Melaina (I am spelling that wrong, sorry!) the owner, for my cut. I told her that I had no idea what I wanted but that I just wanted a low-fuss, different but not crazy, great looking cut that would bring out my curls. She smiled, nodded, looked like she totally got it (even though I was babbling) and off we went.
I got exactly what I wanted, even though to start off with I wasn't sure what that was, and the process was thoroughly enjoyable. Everyone was lovely, I didn't pay an arm and a leg and I got a haircut that I love.
Granted, I did not love the 80s inspired blow-out I got, but that was mostly my fault for not speaking up. As soon as I got home and washed my hair (and used the new deva curl geI bought -- which is actually totally worth the expensive price) my gut instict was confirmed. Melaina did a fantastic job.
The receptionist seemed like she wasn't "all there" and she wasn't exactly friendly, either. Ordinarily I might not have noticed enough to mention it here except that it stood out in contrast to everyone else who was extremely warm and welcoming.
I'll definitely be back!
The best haircut I've ever gotten?
This is an overstatement, so let me edit and clarify: Tiffanie gave me exactly what I described; exactly what I wanted; something no haircutter has ever done before. A bob has always come out too poofy, a shag too shaggy, but Tiffanie's cut looks natural, cute, and flawless. She also cut it so it would air-dry flawlessly when I told her I'm often too lazy and unskilled to blow it. Fun talking to her during it, too. She had a lot of great and adorable anecdotes about her cat (but which haircutter in Williamsburg doesn't, I guess?).
Space is a little too cutesy for my taste, but the location is well-situated off the L, and while it's not as affordable as the reviews would lead you to think (mine was sixty-eight without tip), it's well woth it.
I have been to this salon four times now and had haircuts with both junior stylists and Bean, the previous owner. I opted to pay more for my last cut since I was dropping about five inches. Bean is the most meticulous hairdresser who has ever worked on my hair. The entire appointment I was moving my head in different directions for her so she could ensure the best cut possible. She is a master of her trade and I will most definitely be going back to her in the future.
And, she said she likes cutting short hair and bobs, which is hard to come by.
Let me just start by saying I have "new salon-a-phobia". My curly hair has never been treated with the respect it deserves. Upon leaving The Beehive, I felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders, and I could breathe a sigh of relief.
I actually found this salon through Devachan's yelp profile thankfully enough.
A nice short walk from the subway through a fun, hip area of Williamsburg, I was welcomed into a bright, fun, clean salon. I was early for my appointment so I let the receptionist know that I was going out for a cigarette (i know, bad habit). As I walked out the front door, another one of the stylists held the door open for me but then told me that I could go out back...a nice retreat-like area with chairs/tables, plants and flowers. Some of the employees were out back eating lunch and they were all very nice and inviting. My wonderful stylist, Jeff, came out and they all introduced me to him. He asked what I was looking for in terms of my hair and I explained to him that I was a little nervous about getting my haircut. With a smile on his face, he made me feel so much better about having a detailed discussion about the history of my hair. Let me just say, I've NEVER had a good haircut...it has a mind of it's own and as I get older, it keeps changing.
I sat in his chair and he explained that he would be cutting my curls dry, piece by piece to get the right shape, and then washing and cutting again. As he cut my hair the first time, I got a complete lesson in curly hair, from every aspect. He taught me what I should use, what I shouldn't. He also gave me a hands on lesson on how to style my hair. WHen he was done, I looked at my hair, I saw exactly what I had been dying to see all these years, and I actually asked if I could hug him...he obliged =)
They sell the products he used, but he didn't push them down my throat. Although I did buy the no-poo, cream cleanser, and gel, he didn't force me at all, like they do in some salons.
Jeff had a great way of calming me down, allowing me to "let go", and explained everything in a smart but simple way.
I will, from now on, only allow Jeff to touch my hair, and for the price, definitely at The Beehive Salon!
One word: JEFF! He is the best. He not only gives you exactly what you want, but it looks even better than you could imagine. He also teaches you simple ways to maintain your cut, and even shows you how to cut your own bangs, so you don't have to go back for a bang trim every couple weeks! He is amazing. Go to him!
I really liked Beehive at first, and I've been there about 6 times. I saw Marlene, and for a $65 cut, I feel that I got my money's worth. Once Marlene switched salons, and it was out of my way, I decided to stick with Beehive. I made my appointment with Brandi. She seems to be a people person and fun, but lord the haircut....uneven and it grew out à la Mrs. Brady. I'd say it looked good for about 2 weeks. However, I rescheduled with her, figuring that I'd give it another try. Waste of time. I waited 20 minutes past my appointment in the reception area. I don't mind waiting, but when I have an appointment, and no one tells me what's going on, I feel disrespected. So I got up and told the receptionist just that. She flustered around and told me that she'd get back to me. She didn't. After waiting another 10 minutes, I had to leave (otherwise I'd be late for other stuff). When Brandi saw me, she didn't remember me. While that isn't something to boo-hoo about, in addition to the lack of consideration, I feel that she lacks professionalism....or perhaps the receptionist is to blame.
Things to mention about every visit:
+Cute place, comfortable with a seating area out back.
- pretense of sincerity, especially from the shampoo guy. Like niki b, they ask me the same lame questions every gd time.
-Horrible receptionists. In many instances they have proven that they just don't have it together.
Altogether, I think most of the staff there knows their shit, but Brandi just wasn't the fit for me. I have decided not to return to Beehive because I felt slighted and they wasted my time. And there's no way I am going to fork over $65 for that.
With an interview and grad school info session in one day, my appt this morning had the potential to start off a life changing day :) I deviated from my normal salon and tried Beehive after reading Carol's great reviews and being in the mood for a high end cut.
Carol was kind, listened to what I wanted, and added her own great vision, creating an amazing style. I'm totally in love with the shape of my hair and how well the curls are defined. I'm also digging whatever she used on my hair- I smell like roses.
I'll change it to 5 stars as soon as I can afford the price tag on a regular basis :)
SECOND EDIT: So after a promise of a free haircut from the salon after my initial unhappy review I contacted them about two months later when I needed my haircut again and was not responded to. I will not be going to this place again.
EDIT: After reading my unhappy review the owner of the salon promptly messaged me to offer her sincerest apologies about my experience and make it up to me accordingly. Anyone who is that conscious of what people think of their salon and is willing to fix a bad experience earns my respect. I will be giving this salon another go around. I guess my one stylist did not represent the general attentive vibe that this salon actually has.
Since moving to Brooklyn last September I have been on the arduous quest of finding a salon that fits me and my do. My last cut I got at Hair Metal (also in Williamsburg) on the urgings of several of my friends and I absolutely LOVED my cut. But wanting to be fair to another friend that swears his life on the Beehive I decided to give it a go. (Hair metal and beehive have the same price so why not?)
Now I went into this salon having heard first hand accounts of how incredible they all treat their clients. As in bringing you water and such while you wait. My experience was far from pampered. The stylist I was assigned to named Jayna started my cut almost 15 minutes after my appointment start time and spent the cut speeding like she had a deadline to meet. Not a comforting feeling when someone is putting blades to your coif.
She DIDN'T WASH MY HAIR! Even at really piss poor low end salons you at least get your hair washed before they cut it. Nope. No shampoo, no scalp massage, nothing. Granted, she asked me if she cut do some dry cutting, but I thought that meant after a wash. The entire cut she made zero conversation and even after being told what I wanted she would ask about every five minutes what to do next.
Needless to say I should have stuck with a good thing when I got it. I will not be going back to this salon.
So it's been awhile since I've had my head piece cut and it's become out of control. I began to realize I needed to give the ol' wig the chop when people started to refer to me as "Miss" or "Ma'am" from behind.
I decided to re-discover the uber-cool salon that is Beehive. I'm glad I did. I'm also glad I looked them up online before coming in for my appointment because they have moved locations! Now they are right in the center of "hipster-ville" right off the Bedford L on North 7th.
The washing of the head was still pretty darn good, and my stylist, Marlon, was no-nonsense, efficient and gave good results. I brought a picture in of Gem Archer because I wish I could still be a rockstar even though I quit the band I talked about in my initial review, and she did a great job recreating his mop...a bit shorter, but I actually prefer that because it will give me more time to grow it out. The cut was only $40...but for somebody who only gets it done once every year or so, it's well worth it. The new place is big and almost feels kinda strip mall-ish, but it's very comfortable. Sweeeeet deal dude.

this is my 2nd time here and it was well below what i'd experienced prior and what i expected. I brought photos and I too received what I guess might be the signature beehive bowl haircut. the hairdresser was literally giving me and another customer a haircut at the same time. the music was terrible and the chairs seriously uncomfortable. i'm at home now trying to remedy whatever I can so not look like one of the little girls from the chinese circus that balance plates on their feet - I'm asian and I really look like a circus performer (ok +25 years and 100+ lbs). It was an ok experience the first time but A DEFINITE "NO" unless you're up for an inconsistent cut and interesting interpretation of how you could look with a bowl on your head.
I think it's the worst if not the funniest haircut I've ever had. It doesn't suit me at all and looks nothing like the photos.
I love the Beehive, but avoid Maryanne like the plague!
Here's the story: On Thursday afternoon and my brother told me that "we are taking family holiday pictures next week" so I called The Beehive to try to get a last second booking with Brandi (who is fantastic). She was booked solid, but I asked the receptionist if they had anyone else open and she said "Maryanne." Not only was she open, but she was a senior level stylist (Brandi is only a junior). I figured "I don't know who this person is, but I trust the Beehive." My first bookings with Brandi and Kathy (who I went to for a year before she left) were random over the phone assignments.
Needless to say, my Maryanne experience was far from positive. I had a feeling that it wasn't going to be good from the get-go, but ya know, I trust the Beehive. I'm trying to grow my hair out on top, but I have so much of it that it quickly loses shape. All I wanted to do was shorten the sides and take some bulk out of the top while blending the two, but retaining the top length. What does she do? Takes over an inch off the top and "styles" it like something I'd expect to see in a Banana Republic ad in Maxim. I was extremely displeased when I left and didn't even tip which I have never ever done.
I took off to Union Square to grab some last minute Christmas presents, but I couldn't shake the feeling that I had gotten completely ripped off. I jumped back on the L and stopped at The Beehive and said "I hate my haircut and I want a full / partial refund." The receptionist asked if it could be fixed and I said "there's not much hair left to fix so that wouldn't really be possible." What does she do? Immediately gives me a full refund! Not an ounce of haggling.
As such, I love the Beehive again. Not sure how much I'll love the holiday photos though.
The no-haggle refund is a testament to how awesome the place is. They definitely have a stylish editorial vibe in their cuts so I'm not sure sure how Supercuts-grade Maryanne snagged a spot, but she might be a weekend fill in person as I'd never seen her before. Either way, the Beehive can be amazing and affordable, but I would suggest asking the following questions if you don't have a referral from a friend:
1.) How many days a week does (insert stylist the booker wants to assign you) cut hair at The Beehive?
2.) How long has (insert stylist again) been cutting hair at the Beehive?
Those questions should allow you to dodge the weekend filler folks and get an awesome cut.
I came crawling into Beehive after being utterly ravaged by another salon just days before.... my hair was a-shambles, dripping in the ugliest of brassy orange, looking as if I had attempted a dye-job myself, with a packet or two of Kool-Aid and maybe a hi-liter... But they took me in anyway, took pity on me, and resurrected what had seemed a head of hair beyond repair.
More specifically: I walked in on a friend's recommendation and with the world's worst dye-job (see my Stuart Hirsch Salon review), Jenn sat me down and let me know just how mad I had every right to be about what had happened to my hair, and prescribed a serious and realistic fix. She delivered 100%, taking as much time and energy as was required to bring my hair back into the world of the living. She explained exactly what she was doing the whole time, what my next steps were, and my future options.... basically reinstilling all the trust in hair stylists that I had lost the week before. It truly felt like she gave a crap about my hair and how I felt about it. No pretention, no distraction, just focused and friendly hard work.
She's rad, the place is rad and has a great, easy vibe, and I'll never make the mistake of not going there for my hair again.
I have been faithfully going to Beehive to get my hairs did for about 2 years now and faithfully committed to Casey.
I think homegirl specializes in curly hair, but I tell you what, she can make miracles out of any type! I have long naturally straight hair, so to part with some of it makes me a little nervous and after a shitty experience at Mousey Brown (oh yea, I went there) a little more so (the hair stylist told me my face was "too full" to pull off blunt cut bangs, Fucker. Oh yea, I went there too!). I went straight to Casey upon hearing her good hair deeds and explained my situation. With a look of horror and a mix of Glenda the Good Witch, she assured me that this was certainly not the case and that I could definately go for my Karen O. hair dreams!
After a quick sudsing of the hair, a little name dropping of products (Pureology is all she will use and is some of the BEST shampoo and conditioner, it doesn't clog your follicles or your hair up with chemicals!) she got to work. While my bangs were surfacing Casey kept the conversation flowing by discussing her love of pirates and explaining the origins of all her tattoos. It was like an ol'fisherman's tale, but with hairdo's and boytalk! Then in about 30 minutes time, she spun me around in the chair: TAAAAAA-DAAAAAAHHHHH!
The Beehive is notorious for being fabulous at the fine art of hair, but I come for Casey, she always makes me look bitchin'!
Update;
I revisited the Beehive after hearing that they had moved.
My concerns from my previous review have all been addressed and it is back to being a 5 star salon!
I spoke to the staff about why I had stopped going (cold water, rushed cuts, girly hair etc...) and all of these things have been corrected. Apparently they had issues with their previous land lord which is why the water was cold during the winter. The new facility has more chairs, more amenities, and seemingly more stylists too. Impressive.
The new facility is spacious, slick and not pretentious at all. I was very clear that I didn't want my hair cut to be too girly, but still wanted it to be stylish/hip. I gave the stylist very little direction and she came up with the coolest cut I've had in a long time.
I love my new haircut and I'm a loyal Beehive client once more.

I joined Yelp so I could tell everyone what a genius Carol is. Not only did she style my hair for my wedding which was completely mythical and Grecian-goddess-like with orchids tucked into my hair, but she managed to understand the essence of each of my bridesmaids' personalities and come up with styles that really suited each one. Carol has a unique gift for assessing people's personalities pretty quickly and finding the right hairstyle to draw that out--a little bit like Michelangelo freeing the sculpture from a slab of marble! I saw her this weekend and tried to describe the hairstyle I wanted (and brought some photos which weren't quite right)--she heard me, though, and gave me a Claude Colbert-like hairstyle, which I love and has already gotten a ton of compliments. Go to Carol if you want something that's truly unique and really suits you.
I went here awhile back when they were still located by the Lorimer L train stop - It was whatever. I had a junior stylist and she seemed really nervous. She could barely even blow-dry my hair properly, just kind of pointed the blow dryer at me. The end-result was a lackluster cut.
It's been three days since the Beehive's Carol cut my hair and today I officially decided that I really like my 'do.
I don't fuss much with my hair but when I get my hair cut, the stylists always want to give me some flair-- out come the big, round brushes for the blow out. Hence, the style I walk out of the salon wearing is rarely the style I'll have three days later. My hair has a mind of its own and I let it do what it will. And today, it's--Hey hair, you're looking good...
Thanks, Carol, the pink-haired lady with the pretty peepers, for a fantastic cut but equally for the big hug at the end. Even if you gave me a crappy cut, I'd probably go back just for that!
I used to go here for both my haircut (with Kay) and my waxing/facial needs with Vindy. Unfortunately, Kay left the salon and I went to a different stylist but I still see Vindy religiously. She has been doing my eyebrows for the past 3 years and they finally look good after years of abuse at neighborhood nail places. In fact, I'm spending the summer in CA and I am terrified as to what to do because I don't want anyone else touching them. I may just tweeze until I get back at the end of July. I love her that much. Thanks, Vindy!
For the past couple of years, I've been going to a fancy place in town. Now that I'm a mom, I try to do more things in the 'hood. But enough about me. I got a really great cut from Andrea. I repeat, ask for Andrea (although I think she is on maternity leave until January). So when she's back, ask for Andrea.
4 stars because I've yet to try other people. Andrea is 5 stars.
Tiffanie! Tiffanie! Tiffanie! I came into the Beehive Salon a couple months ago looking like I had recently cut my hair with a flowbee and left looking like a true vixen. Now each time I look in the mirror I sing Tiffanie's praises and plan to return to her again and again and again...in fact...I see her in two weeks. Can't wait!!!
(Tiffanie's cuts / colors are out of this world.)
Normally when you hear that it's a hair stylist's first day at the salon - you might get a little nervous. Especially if you're a semi vanilla girl surrounded by lots of funky haired people. I was a certainly a little apprehensive at first, but being a trooper, I sat in the chair and watched clumps of hair fall to the floor.
When it was all over - I loved my hair! Tiffany did a great job listening to what I wanted (giving shape and lots of long layers to my pin straight flat hair). She gave me a great cut that I can roll out of bed with, wash-n-go, or blow-dry if I feel like putting in the time.
The salon wouldn't normally be my style, and I still don't think it is (-1 star) but you can't knock the price. I probably have not paid $50 + tip for a haircut since 6 years ago - but I have also never had a haircut in Brooklyn, so maybe that's not as cheap as it seems. I would have gladly paid much more.
Overall, great experience. I was able to get an appt within hours notice, Tiffany took her time and did a great job, and it wasn't some outrageous price. I would definitely go back.
This review is for CAROL ....
One of the latest additions to Beehive and a true asset - Carol is the bees-knees! (Pun intended.) It may be that we both hail from the Bay Area - but I immediately took a liking to this lovely lass. The haircut I got wasn't complicated - just a trim and cleanup - but she executed it quickly and professionally with all the same courtesy and attention I'm sure she would give if I was getting a haircut for wedding photos. I'm growing bangs out, so I have very uneven hair in the front but she managed to make it all blend as if it was intentionally cut that way. (P.S. Ask her about her supercool Clark-Kent-not-so-secret-night-job.)
As for the rest of the place...
The receptionist was super friendly - offering me tea and all that jazz. And the shampoo girl was pleasant as well (I forgot to tip her though so I feel wretched about that - but next time, I promise!)
The place is super cute too - one-part grandmother's living room and two-parts vintage throwback salon. I've heard they're moving locations so I do hope they bring the kitsch with them.
I called frantically one Wednesday in the midst of a complete hair meltdown (relating to my impending nuptials and the sad state of my hair) and was squeezed in for a cut on Friday and a dye job on Monday.
I was in a complete panic that the only solution for my damaged haystack would be to shave my head and buy a wig. Louie assessed the damage, calmed me down, and cut my hair. It was fried, ragged, and broken in crazy places and he shaped it into something beautiful and edgy that completely fit my personality and far exceeded my expectations. While I was sad to lose some length, Louie explained the what and the why, and seriously gave me the first compliment-garnering hairstyle I've had since I was about 9. Katie (I hope that was her name?), who was assisting, not only styled my hair beautifully (and with practically no product), but explained how I could do it myself well enough that I actually CAN do it myself - this is probably both a testament to her skills AND to Louie's cutting majesty.
After my haircut, I was completely relaxed about getting dyed here. Jeff is pretty much my hero. He is a perfectionist who not only got my dark blond roots to perfectly even platinum without making them crunchy and brittle, he also spent extra time getting rid of some previous, um, dye inconsistencies (I had a golden stripe next to my roots from my last home touch up), and spent practically an hour blow drying and styling my hair to the greatest majesty possible, while making me laugh the entire time. I have had people butcher my hair more than once, so I'm fairly certain that platinum blond is not a cakewalk, and Jeff's attention to detail and ability to actually transform my hair into what I had always HOPED it would look like spoke volumes about his talent. Jeff is a genius.
The price absolutely can't be beat and the staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and generally awesome. I love the Beehive!
After hearing so much about this salon, I finally decided to give it a try. I called last week, and their first available appointment was last night, so this seems to be a pretty busy place. My stylist was Laura, and I highly recommend her. She was running behind (my appointment was at 6, but I was not seen until 630) but she came over to apologize to me not once but twice! I thought that was very gracious of her - I've been made to wait before without so much of a glance in my direction. Besides, I didn't mind waiting around; it gave me time to relax and soak up the kitschy decor and watch the other stylists working their magic.
Laura was really friendly and funny; we got along easily without any of the typical stylist/client banter about weather and what you do for a living. She made me feel comfortable and gave me exactly the look I was going for - keeping the length, cutting shorter layers and some long bangs - and her blowout was awesome. She educated me about some products, but didnt' pressure me to buy any (I did anyway) and it was such a good experience. Of course since I'm not as talented as she is at styling, my hair looks nowhere near as good today, but that has nothing to do with her cutting skills.
Originally however, I only gave this salon 4 stars, because I was bummed about not receiving the oft-yelped about frequent haircutters card, which is a card you get punched every time you go, and your 10th haircut is 50% off. Well, the workers and owners take Yelp reviews very seriously - I got apologetic calls from the receptionist who mistakenly forgot to give me the card, as well as the manager, and even the owner, Bean! I'm being told that my card is in the mail, which is great, but more important than that is how impressed I am with The Beehive's dedication to customer service! I am overwhelmed with gratitude and only wish that every business took feedback so seriously.
I could not give this chic and affordable salon more postive accolades.
