i kinda liked the ambience of this place. red brick wall and a jazz band. we decided to sit at the bar though because my guy liked doing that. we got two burgers and tar tar steak. they were all good, but the fries that came with the burgers were excellent! i couldn't really tell what's great about them though. they were crispy and greasy and salty, like any fries. but these are good. i don't really know why...
i will go back just for fries lol.
the prices were on the steep side but it wasn't too bad. i think we all paid $26 or something per person. there were three of us.
i think this place should make a very good date spot!
oh don't forget to check out the bathrooms!
I dig this spot.
We went last night after it had been some time since our last visit - still a good vibe and all cozy in a lounge-y kinda way. Granted, unless you are sitting at one of the tables right in front of the stage - you ain't gonna see what's up. In that way - the place is a lousy setup to actually see a show. On the other hand - if you wanna sit back, relax, and enjoy a wide selection of booze - then add some live music in the background - this place hits the spot. Bartender said live music 7 nights a week - so nice to know there's an eclectic spot to hit where live music (and no cover?) is always an option if needed.
Oh and the food - we rocked a few apps. and they were just okay. Certainly, not terrible - but also not so amazing that we'd be coming back for the food alone. This is a place to chill and drink - and for that we'll be back again and again.
The exposed brick, dim lighting and funky decor makes the Beehive a great spot for drinks and apps. The music is great and the vibe is chill-- Good date or girls night drink spot.
The cocktails are expensive but creative and strong especially if you sit at the bar. The apps we had were good, but not great or memorable. The menu sounds interesting but nothing really stood out and the prices are a bit expensive given the other great places in the South End.
3 Stars for Ambiance
-1 star for overpriced food & drinks
I rarely give places 5*s - especially expensive places - but Beehive is as good as it gets. Bear in mind I was on vacation so prices meant a little less to me than they would if it was a regular Thursday night, but the money I spent was more worth it than most places I have been.
The ambiance is of course amazing. Exposed brick, interesting table locations, cool art, wicked bathrooms, and of course the band centres the whole thing.
But what blew me away was the food. We went on US Thanksgiving, so it was a pared down menu, but everything was absolutely DELICIOUS. I almost never say that.
We had perogies (best perogies I've had) and a salad (amazing) to start, a couple of yummy cocktails, and then I had the burger with kettle fries and my friends had the prime rib special. The prime rib was perfect - almost melted in your mouth. But the burger was BY FAR the BEST BURGER I have EVER had. The rest of my table tried mine and agreed. I am still raving about it!
To go to out for a meal and have two of the best versions of one's favourite foods ever = a perfect night out. I cannot say enough about Beehive.
This place has serious character! Amazingly sexy decor and during the halloween season, every waitress, waiter and bartender are dressed up.
Although, I gave this only 3 stars because this is no place to watch a show. I went here for my first burlesque show, and what a let down. The stage was so small probably only 8-10 people long, and you aren't even able to see the stage from all sides! You are able to go upstairs to watch it, on their youtube quality screen, which we ended up doing.
The cocktails are strong and delicious though- $10.50 a drink. I do think $14 is a little steep for four shrimp...
I would go here for a nice fancy dinner, but I don't think anything more.
I really liked the interior. I feel like on a regular night this place would be fine, or to LISTEN to music, but it's a really bad venue for an actual show. Not many people can actually watch a show going on due to the small awkward setup.
Otherwise pretty good but overpriced. I'd go back just for the ambiance.
I loved this place - I went to Boston for college and I go back once in awhile to visit friends in the last +10 years after graduation. My usual complain about Boston is that the places are full of kids - I dont quite enjoy hanging out with the college crowd.
Well - the Beehive was a place that DID not have that ambiance at all!. Great live music, nice crowd, friendly service and delicious food!
I can see why a lot of people dig the hive. It's got the kind of vibe that makes me wish men could be barflies. I could definitely see myself sitting around at the bar, listening to the live music, nursing a martini and waiting for a lovely lady in an evening gown to come by and sweep me off my feet.
It's a really kick ass space, with an outdoor patio, unassuming entrance, small upstairs bar and then a massive lower level that apparently used to be a boiler room. My compliments to whoever did the interior design, because they were able to maintain an incredible sense of intimacy for a space that large.
Beehive advertises as a Jazz lounge, but you get a lot of different variety in the acts that perform there: jazz ensembles, solo instrumentalists, blues guitarists, and the occasional Peruvian flute band.
The bar is awesome, albeit South End expensive (read: $40 for two beers and two cocktails). The bartenders rock. I'd highly recommend the Beehive Julep - it's delish. As for the food, equally delish, and quite generous on the portions.
So whether you're looking for love, some good music or just a stiff drink, stop on by the Beehive. And when you do, come over and say "hi." I'm the guy at the bar, waiting to be swept off my feet.
A go-to place for me on Tremont. Unique atmosphere, live music, good dishes if you pick the right ones.
You should order: their burgers, sage fries, scallops, lamb phyllo rolls, cocktails/wine.
Now I know everyone raves (including my friends) about their short rib grilled cheese, but honestly I did not like it. The meat was dry, and it was slathered with an inordinate amount of cheese. I just found it overly rich/greasy with the thick bread.
Atmosphere is really what makes this place. Would be 3-star without the live band every night, hip decor. Good prices for South End. Nice waitresses, consistently good service. Eating at the patio is a plus during nice weather.
Food (6.5/10)
Atmosphere (5*/5)
Service (4.5/5)
Value (4/5)
I was seriously torn between a 3 or a 4 star here, but I decided to go with 4 because the drinks are good (and strong) and because I genuinely liked the place.
The atmosphere is warm and inviting and the drinks are great, but it wasn't exactly what I expected. I don't know why, but I assumed the bar area would be much larger than it is. I felt as though it was more a place to come for dinner than to go grab a cocktail at.
When we first arrived the place was absolutely packed, and we were ushered to a specific part of the bar because that was the only place that would hold us. Even then, we were told that we were taking up too much of the dining area and that we needed to cram further in - to the appropriate bar area.
Now for the band. I liked that it wasn't overly loud, and we didn't have to yell over one another to hear what was being said. The only downside is that you can't get close enough to actually watch them play unless you are seated at one of the nearby tables.
And on to the drinks. I ordered a pear martini because I saw a wonderful Yelp review on it. WOWSAH! SO strong! If I would have drank the full martini my friends would have been carrying my out of the place. We definitely received our $$'s worth of alcohol on that one.
We had reservations for noon Sunday brunch, but arrived 30mins late, thanks to the ever reliable and efficient MBTA. But the hostess was so gracious about it, and gave us a table in less than 5mins of our arrival, despite our tardiness.
We were led downstairs to a seating area where there were no windows and it looked and sounded like a jazz club on a smoky Friday night. IMHO, any restaurant with a name like "The Beehive" with a live jazz band on Sunday brunch and makes you want to drink like it's the bar's last call, is a-okay in my book.
I had a bloody mary which was absolutely gorgeous. It was sufficiently spiced and had a skewer of an olive and jalapeno. Also, I swear there was some Old Bay around the rim around of the cup which, being a Baltimore homegirl, made me very excited.
I ordered the grilled cheese, which sounds quite boring, but it was the size of my upper body with enough butter and thick slabs of cheese to make Paula Deen squeal twice. I also had a side of potato crisps, the kind that are basically fries, but shaped like chips. I could eat a whole plateful of those.
Unfortunately, I am not financially endowed enough to frequent a brunch place in the South End, but I would definitely go back to The Beehive with my sugar daddy. Just sayin.
A group of us came here for a friend's birthday, and the Beehive was a fantastic choice. The service was fast, efficient, friendly, and not overly hovering. As a group of 7, we enjoyed the hummus plate with whipped feta (very good), tuna tartare (amazing), and fried clams (yum!) for our first course. A glass of $7 malbec off the wine by the glass list blew me away. I kept thinking $7?? In the South End? I'll be back for that glass of wine if nothing else!
For main courses one of us had the seabass (bland), burgers (yes, burgers...and freshcut chips/fries that were seasoned perfectly), the shortrib grilled cheese that was eaten so fast it was hard to tell what it looked like, and the greek salad with steak.
The best part is the music, but the crowd is a close second. 30+ interesting mix of couples, groups, singles, for drinks, conversation and music. The volume of the live music was not overpowering conversation but complemented it. I will definitely return.
I've been here on three occasions.
The first time I went for jazz week with my friend. We enjoyed a nice brunch while listening to jazz music. She had granola, beignets, and fruit while I had the eggs benedict with smoked salmon. We were both pleased with our food choices. It gets kind of crowded so I recall waiting to get my drink refilled a lot, but all in all I enjoyed the brunch.
The second time I came, I once again ordered the eggs benedict while my friend ordered the veggie omelette. It was delicious! The service was much better this time.
I returned once again while my sister was visiting and we sat at the bar this time and just ordered drinks. I ordered the Beehive Julep and my sister ordered the Pink Lady Lemonade. My Julep was so tasty, but slightly too sweet which my sister liked. Her Pink Lady was not good at all. Being the nice sister, I switched her drinks so she could have the one she wanted. After another sip of the Pink Lady, I knew I couldn't drink the entire thing. I asked the bartender to make me the Julep instead which she did without hesitation. I enjoyed the drinks, they were decent for the price of about $8 or 9 each.
I would return since the bartender was so nice and the mood was very relaxed for a quick drink before heading out to dinner on a Sunday evening.
One more thing to add, for some reason every time I have gone here they ask me if I have reservations and I when I say "no" they give me a very disapproving look. Then, when I walk downstairs to be seated more than half of the tables are empty. I don't understand this, but maybe if you don't want that disapproving look you could call ahead and make a reservation :)
I have been dying to come here basically since I moved back in May and finally I got the chance to go with a friend of mine!
DELICIOUS! The shortrib grilled cheese is absolutely AMAZING! It was so big I could only eat half. I hesitated on bringing the other half home and decided against it because all of that juiciness and gooeyness left the bread a bit soggy on the plate. I mean that is if you can leave it that long without devouring it! The frites were light and airy and somehow made me not feel as bad for inhaling them.
I tried the Julep which I thought was yummy and definitely strong enough. Although I kept getting some mint leaves stuck in the straw occasionally which was annoying! But other than that it was delicious. After that I stuck to my basic cheaper drink, but they happened to be out of it so the waitress recommended another drink for me. It was great!
Overall, great food, attentive service and great decor! I will def be back!
My girlfriends and I had dinner here a few months ago, and it was a really great choice. Not for the strictly budget-minded though, as our total came to $60 or so a person ... not bad considering we had wine, drinks, apps, dinner, desert... but still a little pricey.
Anyway. Our night was really amazing. The atmosphere is great - dimly lit, staff in funky clothes, jazz bands setting up. And the food, YUM. We shared the mussels to start, which were so phenomenal we kept asking for more bread to suck up all the broth. I loved my swordfish, it was perfectly cooked and so moist! My friends loved their meals too (chicken picatta, scallops, and something else I don't remember what!) and we had just a really good time.
My friend recommended i go to this place and I am glad I did! I absolutely loved everything about this place. First, the venue is just amazing. It is absolutely beautiful with all the artsy decor and dim lighting.
We were seated downstairs next to the entertainment. The Sweet and Low Down with Tess. They were great and amazing to listen to while eating my amazing dinner.
The food is great and unique. I had the grilled cheese short rib sandwich. The portions are big. We also ordered the cheese and gravy fries which are to die for! You may need a bulldozer to carry you out of the restaurant.
I think I like this place more for the decor than anything else. I really enjoy the exposed brick walls, the huge art displays, the trendy vibe, etc.
What I don't like: long waits at the bar because unless you have a table for dinner. (or near the entertainment stage)..there is no additional service...and I hate the loud factor. People compete to be heard (cavernous space - high ceilings...and then add in the music on nights with live entertainment) and it gets really loud, really fast. If it were just a bar than perhaps it wouldn't be that bad...but I'm not altogether satisfied with screaming at my date over dinner trying to be heard.
The Bee Hive is definitely worth checking out, especially for their Shortrib, Farmhouse Cheddar & Fontina Grilled Cheese. It was Yummm-tastic, and well worth the $13.00 price tag!!! Also try the Beehive Frites with Sage & Sea Salt - large enough portion to share and completely wonderful!
The atmosphere is interesting too. It is in an old theater with a Jazz band playing in the downstairs section. Now, I am not a Jazz fan, but this was actually tolerable. It was not so loud that you had to scream over them to have a conversation and not that whiny annoying Jazz music.
This may seem odd to comment on, but I really liked the bathroom too. If I was the one decorating it I would have given up saying that there is no way to make this place pretty. But, they managed to add some decorative flair to a old warehouse type bathroom with the stenciling.
Great vibe, but the food is sub-par. When is gets packed downstairs the crowd turns into a bunch of frat-boy types with annoying dates who just come there to "be hip" for the evening (we all know the type). Truthfully, if the management could somehow match the vibe of the place with the stellar bar staff, you could be looking at a real winner. They make some great cocktails here!!
Hmmm...nope. Not impressed.
The décor was interesting, in a cool way. The colors, the wacky paintings, the crystal chandeliers. But at the same time, it was kind of like dining inside a dim-lit Urban Outfitters.
The live music was very soothing and the song selection last night was perfect. The bathrooms were clean, the host and hostess were very nice. The location is smack dab in the center of Tremont, but the restaurant's signage could stand to be a bit clearer (a "B" isn't necessarily a dead giveaway!). The service was far below what any restaurant should offer. There is one girl with short curly hair and a "pi" tattoo that came to "check" on us...so we told her what needed "fixing"...like the fact that we wanted to order some food. She said, and I quote, "ummm you're going to have to wait for your waitress because I can't hear you". What? Go back and stand at your podium and stop giving the impression that you're trying to be of service then. What the hell are you there for?
On to the food...
Those FRIES. I would consider returning just for those damn things. However, they are in desperate need of an accompanying sauce (read: NOT ketchup). The sprinkling of sage leaves were also over baked, making them bitter and aftertaste-y. The hummus was chunky and delicious. The burger was not the best, very well seasoned, but just missing something. The shortrib sandwich, on the other hand, was heaven. Very moist, tender beef and just the right amount of marinade, stuffed between two perfectly toasted pieces of delicious bread.
Then, we ordered the poutine. I just spent a week in Montréal, and literally cried when I saw it on the menu. Then, all my delectable memories were crushed with one bite of the Beehive's version. What cheese is THAT? Soggy fries! NO GRAVY. A drizzle of gravy defeats the purpose of gravy.
I don't think I'll muster enough enthusiasm to come here again, unless someone I know is playing.
...and stop messing with the poutine, putains!!
I went here with 3 friends for dinner and a performance, and IT WAS GREAT- decor, atmosphere, the singing. However, you should know, there are a few rules:
1. You can't just 'show up' and expect to get a table-- the food and drinks are pricey, so if someone is on stage, chances are people will be at the table long after they've finished dinner-- this isn't like any normal restaurant.
2 Go early-- we arrived around 6:45 for our 7 pm reservation-- the place was only 25% full (on a Saturday night) and we were able to secure a spot right in front of the stage-- the place was full with a line by 8:15. We kept our table for the rest of the night. (ps, if you plan to do that, at least keep on drinking-- there's nothing more frustrating than a table that hasn't made ANY money for 2 hours, and they don't charge a door fee to compensate for this).
The food was great-- I had a salad and the Lime & Jalapeno Luxe Seafood Ceviche. For cocktails, I had a few Kir Royals (mmmm Casis Liquor!)
The only reason they lose a star is for some questionable server behavior.
As for the people who yelped about prices and wait-times, I totally understand that when you have 50 people waiting outside for a table, and everybody inside just 'hanging out' after they finish dinner, you have to keep the prices high to make a profit & weed out the cheap-o's.
My pal took me here while on vaca and we had a great time! The food was delicious. Dont be scared of the prices because you get an all night show with your meal! I took the cous cous with chicken and lamb. It came with these interesting lamb sausages. The music was fab!
In my national pursuit of the best bars in America (some would call it alcoholism, I call these people the police), I have to say this is one of my favorite bars I've come across.
It's probably unfair to label it as only a bar, because it's really more than that. It's a jazz club (complete with a full stage), it's a great dinner joint, and just a really cool place in general. There's tons of odd-ball, but interestnig art all around, especially in the bathroom (I've never had so much to read while doing my business). The food was great and the atmosphere too.
Try the local beer. I think it was called fish hook, sea scale...some nautical theme. Anyways, it was a great beer. The sea bass was excellent. The scallops according to another person with us was too. I can't remember any other dishes specifically, but everyone in my group was very pleased with what they ordered.
So in summary, this place is a cool bar, in fact, it's many a cool thing; try the local beer; definitely try the seafood; and the police think I'm an alcoholic.
Heard a bunch of mixed reviews about this place and I was meeting up at a bar around the corner for a friends birthday. So, me and a friend decided to check it out.
First, I didn't get a reservation and it was pretty full. But we got seated or at least they tried to seat us right away. They seemed to have messed up the seating plan and we were told to follow someone downstairs but when we got there we were told to wait as the host wandered around aimlessly. So, after 5 minutes they sat us at a table. The table was directly in front of the stage but that table should be removed. The table seemed to be in the way of the servers and really didn't fit. Also we seemed to have three different waiters. Maybe they felt bad and added that table in because they messed up. Who knows. They also forgot the bread for the table but once they remembered they brought us three baskets of the course of the dinner.
OK, now that I've trashed the place and you will never want to go there. Let me tell you what we did like. The decor and setup was really cool. Very speak easy prohibition style looking. Most tables could see the stage with a live jazz band playing. And when the band took a break they played old black and white films. Although, it was hard to tell which one since it was against a brick wall. The table was cozy for the two of us. They need to get really candles. The electric ones on the table seemed a bit cheesy. But the setup was nicely laid out on white table cloth.
The drinks were maid right and to order. She hated my Manhattan with extra cherries and I hated her pear martini. But that's why we order drinks for ourselves not for the other person. They had bitters for my Manhattan which was also a nice. I also had a glass of red wine called 14 hands. Which, I didn't think it was that good. But what can you do.
For and appetizer, we had a half dozen raw oysters. They were very tasty and fresh. She had never had raw oysters before and she thought they were fun and tasty. I was glad that they were so fresh for her first time.
As Our main course. She had the sea bass with rice pilaf. The fish was cooked well and was not over powered by the lemon flavoring. Her rice was cooked well and she liked it. I had the roast duck and risotto. The duck was cooked perfectly then shredded. The risotto was placed on top. The mixture of rich duck and cheese risotto was amazing. And the portion was huge. I'm a light eater but i didn't even finish a quarter of it. She finished all of hers with out a problem and was full.
I would definitely go back again.
Went to the Beehive a while back for my birthday. Waited in line for two hours - It was freezing, and they only had one heat lamp, near the door.
Everyone that worked there --- from the door staff to the hostess, waitstaff & bartenders -- seemed to want to be somewhere else that night. And the drinks are among the most expensive in the city.
On the plus side is a cool decor, and a live jazz band. But it just wasn't enough.
We stayed for about 20 minutes, then gave up and moved next door to Aquitaine.
Go there for a night out, definitely NOT for the food.
The seafood is not fresh and they are likely to overcook or even burn your steak. They also tend to over-salt. My friend likes their burgers, so that might be a safe option. Otherwise, eat elsewhere and come here afterwards to party.
had the swordfish sandwich and it was to die for!
and their chef has a fantastic how-to video & recipe on http://how2heroes.com for Maple Bread Pudding!
http://how2heroes.com/...
The beehive is pretty cool-less the food.
There is a live jazz band, and it has a very cool vibe inside. It seems like a good spot if you have a big group.
The food kind of sucked- the price made it worse. We started off with mussels as an app, they were tasty and fresh. I had the chicken piccata w/gnocchi as an entree and it was tasteless/watered down. My boyfriend has the swordfish and it was ok, he also agreed tasteless and with the $24 price tag, it just didn't hit the spot.
We had high hopes for The beehive but were disappointed, "le sigh". Its ok, was worth a shot!
What could I possibly say about this place that hasn't been said in the 300+ reviews?
I came in here, expecting to slightly hate it as an overrated trendy joint. But as soon as I walked in, I loved it! The exposed brick, the ceiling chandeliers, the art for sale (some of which may belong in the museum of bad art instead).
The waitress was friendly and extremely patience with my lack of decision making (the less options I have, the more indecisive I get). I ended up ordering Cajun bass blt sandwich. It was huuuuuuuuge and awesome of as much of it as I can eat of it.
The jazz music at 8 added a nice touch to the evening. The drinks are more than overpriced so I wouldn't plan on getting trashed here, but foods are good.
This comment is only for the Sunday brunch.
It's not like $13 is a HUGE sum to pay for an eggs benedict, but at that price you should at least cook it properly. Mine were almost hard-boiled. If I hadn't been on a less-than-stellar date, and just wanting to get out of there quickly, I would have sent them back. Cooked properly, they would have been good.
The coffee was very good, though, and the service was pretty good. There was certainly a lot of eye-candy walking around Tremont Street. But considering the price here, and considering that I've already been to a couple of brunch places in town that were awesome the first time, I'd probably pass this one by next time for brunch, unless someone else was paying.
The interior decor is cool, though. I'd go see a band play there.
What a great night out for dinner with friends. We were visiting friends living in the South end and had a quick walk to the restaurant. With weather being fantastic, I was at first disappointed that we didn't eat outside - until we walked in and downstairs. The least bit "cavey" or "divey". Despite being downstairs - it was nice and open and could hear the live music very well.
I found many things on the menu that I wanted to try - and the waitress was very attentive and engaged. She handled my "what are your favorites" question quite well - and I was very happy with my choice!
We started out with the Raw Platter for 2 for our appetizer. There was definitely enough for 4pp as an appetizer. I got the Wild Striped Bass with Sweet Potato and Corn Hash, and Dill Creme Fraiche. It was a great fusion of flavors. (I personally think that a few salty bacon bits added in would be tasty against the sweet of the corn and sweet potato).
I felt the wine was a good value - especially as they have carafes that can serve 2 1/2 glasses of wine. However - I would prefer wine glasses to the brandy glasses that they serve the wine in. At any rate - they had a good back story for why they use the brandy glasses - so make sure you ask!
A great first meal in Boston!
Docking one star due to the rude shitty bartender on Saturday night and his equally shitty drinks. I asked for something w/St. Germian, and he sloshed together some in a glass w/sparkling wine. It tasted like syrup (i.e. way too much St. Germain). When bringing this to his attention a few minutes later, he asked what I wanted instead. When I took longer than 0.5 seconds to answer, he shoved the menu in my face and ran off. Perterbed I asked for the sangria, thinking that's usually an ok bet since it's mainly wine.
WRONG!!! They make their sangria with some weird liquor I couldn't get a glimpse of, and some red stuff (my assumption was the juices/wine/whatevs that go in sangria). This shit was so terrible, it tasted like sugar water with paint thinner in it. I had a few others try it to make sure it wasn't just me, and I got grossed-out looks all around. I couldn't force it down, so I asked the bf to just get me a bud light.
No need to be rude hombres, especially when we are paying $10+ / drink.

So I've been here 3x now and can safely say, it's pretty fun IF it's not re-tard-ed-ly crowded.… Read more »
Cool funky decor, a long list of fun old-fashioned and unique drink concoctions, and live jazz. The downstairs bar is spacious, leaving lots of room to mill around or for larger groups. Though I sadly didn't have the opportunity to sample any of The Beehives food options, each of the drinks I had was delicious. For something light and sweet (read: SUPER GIRLY) try the "Pink Lady Lemonade." The bartenders were attentive, despite the overwhelming Monday night crowd.
At $10.50 a piece, mixed drinks at The Beehive are far from cheap, but you certainly get what you pay for. Of course, if you prefer, you can always skip this funky young professional scene and head to a dive near MIT to hang with undergrads and drink $3 PBRs.
This place would be a LOT cooler if it didn't charge $7 for a pot of coffee. Who doesn't have free refills on plain coffee? Went here for a bookclub, and when we got the check - surpriiiiiiise - we each owed an additional $11 for coffee. Not right.
I looooove the interior and atmosphere of this place, it's like the coolest place ever. Adore the live music, decor, subterranean location, and strong drinks, such a fun place to dress up and pretend you're a Parisian bohemian with your girlfriends.
The one time I've eaten here for dinner, the food was decent but nothing spectacular... I had some kind of fish with caper and tomato sauce, and it was good, but a bit too pricey for what it should have been. The drinks tend to be tasty, but also pricey (but expected for these parts). They do have great music/art events though, and I'd like to check out brunch (that bohemian egg dish sounds great).
Who doesn't love live jazz music along with fried chicken, potato salad, and watermelon!
Seriously, I have been craving fried chicken like its my job.
Saturday night, the place was busy but not so busy that we had to wait for a table for 2. We actually got a great spot right in front of the stage! Wow, take that reservation placers!, we didn't have one and still got a great table!
Our waitress was very nice. I wish I knew her name, but she has 2 sparrow tattoos near her shoulder ( one on each side) and a fabulous sense of style in accessories ( I loved her earrings, they looked like something out of grandma's jewelry box)
Anyway, she was very kind, friendly, and answered our questions. FYI, Lets be frank is made with Makers Mark. The beehive julep, divine! Although they put too many mint leaves, my straw kept sucking up the leaves with each slurp.
Started off with the Moroccan cigars. These things are da bomb! Lambed fill eggroll type appetizers that comes with this dark gunk but applied to the "cigar" its DELICIOUS! I wish the plate had more than 2. They pack a bit of a spicy punch which I really enjoyed.
My picnic fried chicken was excellent! So crispy and yummy. So not afraid to pig in with my hands. Its topped off with watermelon bits and a side of potato salad which kept tricking me every time as I kept thinking it was mash potatoes. Why is it cold.! Duh, its potato salad dummy! Not mashed potatoes.
BF has the ribs special and that was really good as well accompanying a baked potato.
The live music, great service, and delicious food was a great night to our date.
The decor is neat too, just very eclectic and nothing matched.
The Beehive is also a great place for groups, couples, your parents visiting. Its awesome, eat, drink, enjoy live music! What a life!
Neat place. Love the decor and ambiance.
Great salsa live band on Sunday nights. Sangria was delicious and cocktails are good. Food is also pretty good-nothing crazy unique or exceptional, but tasty for a fun environment. I like how there is a bar upstairs for more privacy and less noise and one downstairs if you're looking to mingle with singles and listen to the bands.
Not the most quiet place due to the live bands, but a fun place for groups or after date-drinks. I would pick another place for a date-like across the street at Addis Red Sea.
Would def come again.
Ah - the Beehive. Just one of a number of establishments in the area that have been helping it seem less like a war zone and more like a cool neighborhood you'd like to get drunk in.
Not a huge fan of this place. Although if you knew me, and you don't, you'd say this was my kinda place - live jazz, cool venue.
Went here with a small group recently. Had to wait in line to get in. Waited. And waited. FINALLY we could get in and it was PACKED. Like elbow-to-elbow waitress-constantly-gruffly-telling-you-to-move packed. We had a drink upstairs, whilst trying not to spill it from being banged about so much, then headed down. Downstairs is where the live music is. The stage looks like it was decorated with my grandmothers' old bedsheets. Singer wasn't very good. Overly loud brass for the area made it more annoying than cool. Every single table was taken. Not a chair in sight. We hung out near the bar where yet another rude waitress/bouncer/jerk constantly reminded us to get out of the way and keep the area clear. Annoying.
The place has the whole Boston-exposed-brick thing going for it. The upstairs has a sort of balcony-feel to it as it's open to the stage below so you can hear the enormous lady belt out bad jazz. Packed like sardines - welcome to Boston.
I don't want to go back.
Say what you will about the experience that is The Beehive - and trust me, it's VERY different depending on the day, the time, and the band - but the food is DAMN good.
Yes it's pricey side when you get into the entrees - that's probably why I stick with the apps and the smaller items. I've had a number of dinners here and had friends get entrees by which they were unimpressed, and by which they were floored. I have a few very specific notes to help you enjoy this successful South End establishment...
1 - They serve food til 1am. w00t!
2 - There's FREE live music every single night. Depending on the style/band it can get loud, so if you want to try the Beehive for dinner but don't want to yell over your food, make a reservation and specifically ask to sit upstairs, go before the music starts at 8pm, or try to plan in advance and go on a night when there's a quieter group playing.
3 - their drink menu is pretty awesome, specifically the champagne drinks.
4 - The patio is PRIME is a gold mine for people watching on a nice day. They also have a slightly different menu if you've eaten inside and want something new.
5 - If you go post 10pm on a Thurs, Fri, or Sat there WILL be a line. It will move eventually and you'll get in, though it'll be pretty crowded downstairs. They also keep you out of high waitstaff-trafficked areas, so you'll feel a little like cattle and you'll be squished. I don't really recommend this as a place just to go for drinks (cause until 11:30ish you can only sit if you're eating) - it's too uncomfortable.
6 - THE MOST IMPORTANT PART: Food. The Burger (I usually get it with gorgonzola) is wonderful - one of the best I've had. The Beehive's fries are thin cut potato strips with sage and sea salt and they are the shit. The Poutine (cheese + gravy fries) is drool inducing. But one of the best and most delicious bites of food I have had in Boston, if not in my life, is the Shortrib, Farmhouse Cheddar, and Fontina grilled cheese. Hoooooooly shit people. It's served on gigantic brioche toast, and it's sweet, and juicy, and salty, and amazing. If I could BE a sandwich this would be it...except then I'd want to eat myself.
Okay so the final word is that I like the Beehive. It's got its plusses and minuses, but all in all it's a place to which I return like, well, bees to the hive (awful, I know).
I've only been here for brunch, but I really like the decor of the place. It looks like an old school rustic jazz bar. They have live music, which is a great addition to any meal out. Like my friends said before I tried this place, "the food isn't anything spectacular, people just go there for the live music". Pretty accurate...
I'll have to see what The Beehive is like at night sometime, I hear the jazz is good...
