We respectfully disagree with the unfavorable reviews afoot. As folks who like authentic Mexican food, but are accustomed generally to settling for half-hearted Tex Mex derivatives, we were more than stoked about our lunch here today. Sure, it's an Americanized menu that leans hard to the Tex. But the heart of the matter is in the delivery: and our food was well-tailored and distinctive, two characteristics unusual to the genre.
Warm, festive, inviting interior. We felt at home. Service was of a piece.
We started with a side of refried beans and guacamole to accompany our initial volley of tortilla chips and salsa. All were homemade. Avocados were fresh and delicious, chips were crispy and warm, beans were savory, salsa was mild yet assured.
Both of us tackled bean enchilada entrees, which were well-filled with refried, and generously ensconced both in jack cheese and a house red sauce, the latter of which impressed us. It's very rare to enjoy an enchilada sauce not riffed from a can base. Portions were sensibly hefty.
Beer selection was strong by comparison to the average in the area - Otter Creek Copper Ale and Wolaver's IPA stood out as solid local bounty.
If you're looking for a face-melting Oaxacan virtuoso performance, godspeed and good luck elsewhere inside 100 miles.
But if you're apt to appreciate understated, custom-crafted fare that is uncompelled to kick like a mule, you'll probably walk out of here with a smile on your face. -

Me and my two cousins came here straight off a 3-night backpacking excursion on the Long Trail and anything would have tasted 5-stars under the circumstances.
Even so, The Bean didn't really do it for me. Agree with much of what Amy C said. My fish tacos had little to no flavor and the rice and beans served with it weren't even warm still. It's also very overpriced for what you end up getting, although they do have a nice selection of beers on tap and in bottles.
Chips and salsa were probably the best part. -

The Bean is so cute! We loved it here when we stopped in for lunch after a day of shopping at the outlets.
It's quaint with not more than 10 tables or so, and the service was amazing. Very casual environment with your traditional mexican fare.
The chips and salsa starter was delicious. It was genuine, homemade chunky salsa (my fav) so that made it worth while for me. My tacos were mm mmm good, as were our margaritas.
If I ever find myself in Manchester again (which, I'm pretty sure I will), we'll definitely be coming back here for a meal. -

We came up to Manchester for a weekend visit in mid-July, and I would be remiss not to mention that everywhere we ate "new to us" during this past trip was at least somewhat disappointing! This place was sadly the worst of the bunch.
The interior of "The Bean" is totally inviting; it looks like a little place you might actually go to in Mexico. I love that they offer up lots of hot sauce options lining the walls of the establishment. It's like a tiny, secret place you'd find in Mexico, with just a few tables, and a bar. The problem is the food.
The hubby and I shared the taco platter. The tacos themselves were OK, but my chicken was just too charred, and the tacos overall were too skinny and lacked any real flavor. The rice and beans was beyond overcooked. The guacamole I had ordered as a side was just wrong. It lacked any acidity, and tasted like a big clove of garlic. I really don't like writing negative reviews, but I'm totally surprised by the excellent reviews given by previous Yelpers. Perhaps we went on an off night. Maybe we ordered wrong. (But how do you go wrong with tacos, quesadillas and guac at a Mexican place?) In any case, I can't say we'll be back.
(A side note: the service was great; very sweet and patient waitress, but the prices are definitely inflated, especially for the quality.) -

We were delighted with the food, service, and atmosphere. The enchilada sauce was among the most flavorful I've had. The portions were generous. The prices were reasonable. Even the music was to our taste. (I think it was "the jam station" on satellite radio.) They prepared my special order perfectly and graciously. (I wanted plantains in my grilled veggie enchilada -- delicious!)
"Heat" is to your own taste, with at least four flavors of Tabasco on the table. Chipotle was our pick.
We would definitely return to The Bean. -

Solid meat and/or vegetarian Mexican food. Not run of mill Mexican food, but excellent food and reasonable prices.

Decided to stop here for dinner after reading other Yelp reviews. Glad we did, cozy little place, nice atmosphere, food and service was very good. Definitely be back when in VT again.
