The Barn has been my go-to shop for shoes since childhood. The shoes are of suburb quality and variety. The service is wonderful and personable - something you can't get when shopping for shoes online. I highly recommend it for all your shoe needs.

Lots of available shoes but the customer service is sad- despite the fact that there are many people/staff available--

expensive, but if you are in a pinch, there is a lot of variety here.

don't expect any friendly service though...

My husband grew up in Newton and speaks of going to The Barn as if it's the holy grail of shopping. So, last year, I went into The Barn to buy running shoes. The salesman looked me up and down and asked, "You don't run much, do you?"

    Seriously? Screw you, The Barn.

If your employee is going to be insulting and not help a potential customer because someone doesn't look the way he thinks a runner should, I'll just take my business elsewhere. Peace out, dudes.

P.S. I ran my first 5K in awesome sneakers from Marathon Sports.

I love Dansko clogs and Wolky shoes.  My husband has hard-to-fit feet and wears ECCO shoes. They know how to fit shoes here.  The prices are generally not discounted but we're medical professionals and on our feet a lot.  Call us boring but we need this store. They also have a great collection of sturdy, cute waterproof boots,  Yes you can shop on Zappos but come here if you want help from a human and need comfy quality shoes right away,

"Eek!  Methinks not" is correct.  I went here to check out Crocs that I need for vet school, and they were just as expensive as anywhere else you could find them (in fact, a whole lot cheaper online...).  I must say they do have a wide variety of name brand shoes, but the prices!  Quite ridiculous...even the "sale" rack is astronomically expensive and unnecessary.  Even for something as simple as a pair of slippers or flip-flops.  I think not.
Anyway, what turned me off from this place the most is the fact that there were more employees than actual customers, yet nobody offered to help me find what I was looking for.  They just pretty much stood around and organized, without offering any customer service whatsoever to me nor either of the 2 customers I spotted.  For a "family shoe store" you'd think they'd have motivation to offer good service, either by being courteous or by lowering their prices.
    I won't be back.

I wanted to support local business...really I do, but it is hard to justify this store. I walked in, and while the store is big, I headed directly to wear I wanted. I had a specific model and color I wanted of the Fivefinger shoes....but they didn't have my color and when I walked out of the store they also didn't have the right model. I'm not really happy, but I'm going to return this and go to Citysports Boston, which has my model, the color and size for CHEAPER. Sorry the barn, you struck out today.

To be sure this place has a good selection and decent prices, which is what got me there in the first place.  After two visits, though, I will not be returning.  The customer service is truly awful.

Today, I wanted to bring some shoes back to return or exchange for others - I had my dog with me (it was too hot out to leave her in the car), and when I saw the sign on the door "no pets", I just stepped in the doorway where two sales people were standing talking and asked if I could just hand her the return.  I was trying to respect their policy but still see if I could take care of my business.  I was immediately rudely told I had to get the dog out (mind you, I am standing just inside the doorway, not even through the detectors) and told to "come back without my dog" and they would deal with this.  No offer to take two steps out into the foyer to help me with the transaction.  They acted like I was a huge bother - after reading some other comments, I see I am not the only one who has had that experience there.  I won't be back.

I was recommended to check out the barn by a friend of mine. They have a decent selection of name brands Clarks, Ugg, Birks, etc.

They also have North face and Columbia clothing.

They have professionals walking around to "help you " but I never got any help. I was able to find everything I was looking for. Some things are cheaper then you will find on Zappos other's much more expensive. You need to do your homework. If you do you can score a pretty nice deal.

I got a pair of Ugg slippers on clearance and a North face hat and gloves on sale.

Like I said just do your homework because the good deals are possible due to other over priced items.

All and all I will go back.

When was the last time you went shopping for shoes at a place where the employees actually knew about shoes? The Barn has exactly the kind of old-school "Oh, let me help you with that" customer service you've only seen in old movies.

In short this place is weird, funky, caught in some kind of time-bubble, and has pretty good prices to boot. Har-har.

I've shopped here before because the selection is great.  The sales staff is nice.  i've spent hundreds of dollars in the store.  You cannot return a thing here!  i bought shoes too tight for my daughter who wore them from the store to the car.  we returned 40 minutes later to return the shoes.  the cashier was rude.  she said she recalled my daughter wearing them out of the store.  They would not take the shoes back.  i had an enormous fight with the manager to take them back.  he finally did.  i am done with this store.  nordstrom is where i will take my business (same prices).

This is where to go to find a great selection of higher quality footware:  Keens, Clarks, Ugg, you name it.

The serious bargain hunter hits the sale shelves, and has some patience.

Sweetie got a pair of Uggs here for less than on Zappos.  And one of the great oldsters helped her, and she was quite happy with the whole transaction.

All she kept saying on the way home was, "Why didn't you tell me about this place before?"

Best of all, is that I didn't get dragged to the mall.  Sweet!

After another mom told me of the significant savings on Stride Right shoes, we checked out The Barn.  The shoes are basically the same exact price as anywhere else, for kids and adults.  Nonetheless, we have purchased shoes in both stores for our toddlers and ourselves.  The staff in the kid's store is always pleasant and engaging with the kids.  They have a good selection of children's shoes, boots, slippers and sneakers under one roof, as well as a good sale area if you can find the size you are looking for.

As for the The Barn...there is NO, and I mean NOOOOO customer service.  Literally everytime I've gone in I have never been acknowledged. Staff is usually more busy talking or moving boxes around.  I did buy a pair of Uggs there last fall and didn't get so much as a thank you from the clerk.  In fact, an associate actually gave my 2 year old son a hard time for touching boxes while I searched for my own shoes.  There are no savings either as most items are the exact same price as anywhere else.  Frankly, I'd rather find a store where the staff is friendly and helpful when I part with my hard earned cash!

The salesman measured my feet, both length and width, and instantly told me that there was one, and only one pair of winter boots for me.  The Columbias he grabbed from the back fit great and were reasonably priced.  After stomping around the store a bit, I sat down to ponder the $90 price tag (and, frankly, the shoes' color scheme), and he followed up with, "These are the boots for you.  Any other boots won't be wide enough, and they'll kill your feet."

I thought back to all of those painful walks and hikes last winter, and the one before, and the one before, and realized he was right.  Sold.

I have wide feet and a heck of a time finding the right shoes.  The Barn is the first place I've been where they actually know their business and, just as important, have tons of sizes and variations in stock.  I went and checked on Zappos after I got home, and while they have the same boot for $5 less, not even THEY stock my size!

I have been shopping at the Barn my whole life.  I think my Mom bought my first pair of shoes there.  I know my sister bought her kids first shoes there. I have always loved it there.  Near my house. Convenient.  Unfortunately those are the only 2 things I can now say that are good.

I went in there the other day looking for Fit Flops (love those shoes BTW).  When I walked in I had to approach the girl at the check out to find out here to go.  I was uncomfortable approaching the 5 sales men chatting on the sales floor.  As I was trying out the shoes - with no help, I noticed the clearance area.  Buy 1 get 1 60% off.  SWEET right? No such luck.  I brought 2 additional pairs of shoes up to the register.  The same girl I got directions from rang me up.  The price was way more than I was expecting so I asked her about it. One of the conversing salesmen told me I had not gotten the shoes that were marked on sale.  He continued to be rude.

In today's economy there are a ton of people out looking for work.  Where I spend my money I expect sales people to work for the sale and present some customer service skills - not be rude.  They do not seem to think that they need to work at selling the product and that I should feel honored to have them speak to me.

I don't think so.  If you want to spoken down to then go to the Barn.  Otherwise shop somewhere where you are valued as PAYING customer.

I went in to this store after rave reviews from my husbands co-worker. BAD DECISION!

The staff is very rude and are not helpful. The selection of shoes isn't that great for them to act the way they do with customers. In this economy, you would think the service would be better. There are a ton of places I can go get shoes from with excellent customer service. If you're looking for friendly staff this is not the place!

I'm perplexed by some of the reviews that complained about the sales staff. I went here yesterday with my folks, the sales person came over right after he finished helping another customer. All in all, we waited for 3, maybe 4 minutes. He was very helpful, and very knowledgeable about what The Barn had in stock. My Dad and I both got sneakers in a quick and painless process. The checkout staff was very friendly too.

I should note that not everything is discounted. My Brooks sneakers were only discounted by $5 or so, and my dad's sneakers (I forget the brand) didn't have a discount at all.

A great sale rack in the back room, which I'll continue to shop, but I don't think I'll buy full-price again - I found my Dansko sandals online for $70 less (thank god I found those first), and Keens at REI for $30 less (ended up taking that hit).

Be absolutely SURE about your purchase before you make it.  The customer service might be great when you're spending money, but is pretty apathetic and condescending when you're having trouble.  It turned out I needed inserts for the Keens; clerk acted like I'd asked him to walk to Hingham to get them.  Boyfriend tried to return a pair of Clarks he'd only worn once around the house; they flat-out refused.

Nonetheless, the Barn is great place to do research and sale shop!

From the outside of the store it resembles a shoe outlet but upon entering you are standing in the middle of a large impressive selection of shoes of every variety.  Prices are about the same as retail prices at any of the big retail stores. But in addition to shoes you can find a wide selection of  accessories for shoes.

In a world of DSWs and disorganized department stores, The Barn will win you over with their customer service.  They still have old men in creased pants who kneel down to check with their thumb to make sure that your toe isn't too close to the edge of your shoes.  There is one store for adults, a second for kids and a wide variety of well priced selections.  And better yet- it's a great opportunity to support a local business!

If your looking for high end shoes by Dansko, Merrell, Keen, etc. this is the place and the prices are the usual $100 range.  However the best part of this store is the sale rack.  Sure some of the prices are still high considering this is the clearance area, but I ran out of there with a $19 pair of Croc boots.  They are awesome, especially when it rains and a bit different from all the rain boots everyone seems to have these days.  The point is you never know what you might find and a bargain might be hanging out on one of the shelves.

I love the Barn.  I'm not a shoe person, so I just like to get in and out of there without hassle.  I can do this there.  It's not disorganized like many department store shoe sections.  No pushy salespeople.  My most recent exciting find was that I found a pair of Columbia winter boots for $70 (and later saw them on Zappos for over $100!).  They have fantastic sales there, too.

We grew up buying our shoes here - does anyone else remember how you used to be able to throw your old pair of sneakers up on their roof?  They sell great quality shoes and if you hit them when they have different specials going, you'll get a GREAT bargain.  The salespeople are helpful but will also leave you alone.  I was glad to go there today after not having been there in a while, great selection and great bargains!
