i'm not sure i really understand what is going on with this place in regards to it closing down/moving to church?? but i've frequented the bar quite a bit when my gay friend has been up in town and i've always had a blast! we actually went about an hour or so before we watched milk at the castro theater and still managed to squeeze in a little fun party time as we watched the lines for the movie curl around the street. there's great dance music (although not so much in the early hours of the night), good people, and fairly strong drinks - thats about as much as i can ask for during a night out.
i've heard that the bar is pretty much staying the same despite the name change and change in ownership and then i also heard that the "boc" is moving to church st. so i'm not sure which spot is going to be the one to go to but i think it's worth it to check out the old stomping grounds and see how they're holding up.
The bar is now called Q bar! Not a damn thing except the name has changed from what I experienced visiting here the other week. Maybe some updates? I don't remember, I was too drunk. It's a way too fucking claustrophobic during holidays, but on a not so crowded night a total blast!

I am so glad this bar closed. It was by far my most dreaded place to go. I love being gay and going out to the gay scene, but this bar was what I like to call an arm-pit: stinky, musky, tightly packed. It was a claustrophobe's nightmare, and this was even on a week night. The drinks were at least $7 for a well drink! Wow!
My friend used to drag me here because he was always saying that it was the place where he could hook up with his ghetto guys, and he was right. I guess I'd rather just not be packed in like a sardine to this hell-hole, which is a fitting name considering the narrow closet it is and the red light pouring through.
Woohoooo!!!
Hip hop Thursdays..
Stiff Drinks... Danced my ASS off!!
Need I say more?
Oh I remember the days when I was a constant party goer and BOC was the place to be at on Saturday nights. Many a nights did I wander into the club sober, only to find myself hunched over in front of a trashcan hurling my brains out. BOC's Tall Long Island Iced Tea's were the culprit to this debauchery... and man did I love em.
I prefer BOC over all the clubs in Castro (including Jet -- overpriced! and the The Cafe -- boring scene and not-so-hot people). It had the best music (hip/hop with a twist of "queer" lol), though the space was filled with a drunken crowd by midnight on a Sat night.
A- in my book.. I still don't understand why they insist on breaking their used glass cups in the smoking section trash can!!! Such a waste...
One of my favorite venues in the city, but you HAVE TO get there on the right night. I avoid it on Fridays and Saturdays, it's just too packed and crowded, you can't even move, much less dance, or even, breathe.
The servers aren't the friendliest in town. Even when slow, none of my friends or I have really conversed much with anyone working here, and that's unusual because we're on a first name basis with servers and bartenders all over the city. But here, they just don't seem to want to be bothered.
Sunday nights, however, earn this place it's fourth star. $10 all-you-can-drink happy hour, 5:00pm-8:00pm. Awesome. Gogo dancers that night too, and somehow, even though this is pretty much the least expensive option in the city on Sundays, it's busy but not jam-packed. We like it. A lot.
-Great DJs
-Strong drinks
-Indoor/outdoor smoking section makes it easy to air out after working up a sweat
-Good mix of people 'cuz I can be really particular
and,
-It's totally okay to dance on the tables...though it's a tight squeeze usually on the floor, w/e...I'm a more-the-merrier kinda girl!
I went here on New Years and enjoyed the the time I spent inside. The crows was predominately male though. It was also ridiculously crowded. It definitely seemed like it was past capacity even before I walked.
The bartender was nice but the drink were a bit pricey. The drag queen performer was hyped up and was not that big a deal.
I hope to check it out sometime again soon on a more "average" night.
I rank this place 1 star higher than it's eviler twin, 440. Why? It's not got that sweaty-pig-slave-and-bear-friendly atmosphere quite as much.
It IS hella' busy, much more so than I like. So NO, I do not like this place. I do give it 2 stars because the drinks are poured "gay fabulous" (barely any mixer to the sterile concoction), and the crowd is decent.
And they charge a door fee sometimes--for a bar like this, that's just evil.
I walked in with my then boyfriend, grabbed a drink, and stood around soaking in the atmosphere. It took about 6.2 minutes before a cute little thing sauntered in with his hands above his head yelling "I'm here bitches!"
He unbuttoned his shirt faster than anyone I've ever seen in my life, and whipped off his yellow and white striped shirt.
yeah. its that kind of place.
neat-o :)
I def enjoy BOC, the music, the people the overall vibe. The caveat being, $6 for a well drink is above market price in SF. While in the drink line I've heard numerous people express their displeasure with the increased prices. Add on top of that there is cover almost every night of the week and the sound of money flying out the wallet is getting might loud.
Thankfully I a) have a VIP card so don't have to pay the cover and b) stick to going on booty call night when there are $3 svedka specials.
I've been to The Bar enough times to make a single star implausible, but it really isn't great. The music is better than at Badlands, and the crowd is more diverse, but they pack you in so tight that you can't dance. The drinks are pretty watery and I usually have to leave within an hour or two because I've run out of corners to duck into to escape sketchy characters.
The single worst thing about the place is the bald bouncer. Once he asked me to go to the back of the line without my friends because it was a lesbian night, and I'm a guy. Another night he told me that I couldn't return for my jacket because I had been thrown out, even though I've never been thrown out of that or any other place, or even had a problem with anyone. Nothing ruins a night more than that "herding the sheep in to be fleeced" vibe.
Pros: Smoking porch, sometimes ok music, not Badlands.
Cons: Too small, weak drinks, overpriced, bad attitude.
One of my favorite bars in the Castro! Yes, this place is too small and will have you packed in there like sardines. And many times if a particularly popular song comes on, you'll get hit on the dance floor a few too many times by flailing arms and elbows (I just hit back and feign ignorance, but don't tell anyone that. Sshhh.). Aside from that, the drinks are great and I love the vibe here. It's very "hipster" and "bohemian", as opposed to many of the Abercrombie & Fitch ("Abercrappy & Bitch") clones who frequent nearby Badlands and The Lookout. Also, a healthy dose of ethnic men here (Asian, Black & Latino) is a refreshing change from the predominantly-White clubgoers of the other nearby clubs.
One star off because of that one time when a 40+ guy pulled his pants down and took a steaming dump on the dance floor. His excuse was that he'd eaten some bad cheese and couldn't get to the restroom in time. Let me tell you, peeps: that dance floor cleared out quicker than a whore in a limousine after a blowjob.
I've only been here on 80's night (Monday) with a friend and it was decent. The music was good, but HOLY toledo, was it crowded. BAR is one of those locations that gets crowded VERY quickly, which can be GOOD or BAD, depending on how you want to look at it. If you want to DANCE, this can be stifling, but if you want to LOOK, this is the place for you.
Yes, there are lots of men, but I've seen lots of straight women and lesbians here, too.
The drinks are strong and inexpensive. YAY!!!
I was careening down a Boston street the other night in the back of a cab. The driver had just turned up a dance remix version of "Bleeding Love" to full blast and the two of us were belting out the lyrics.
You cut me open and I
Keep bleeding
Keep, keep bleeding love
I keep bleeding
I keep, keep bleeding love
Folks in cars near us shot raised eyebrows in our direction but we paid them no mind and kept on singing and dancing. When we reached my hotel after what was surely the BEST.CAB.RIDE.EVER all I could think was that this was probably the closest I could get to dancing with my boys at The Bar On Castro - without actually being in San Francisco.

Strong drinks, reasonable prices, friendly and attentive staff and a crowd that isn't a bunch of a-holes.
Yeah, I'm a fan.
Did I mention the strong drinks?
I hate Highway 101. One morning you could be scrambling to get back to the house from SF and not make the bed or forget about unloading the dishwasher or hurry taking the dog out and it's 720am all you can think about is how late to work you'll be and next thing you know it takes you 20 minutes to get home.
THEN a morning you decide to take your time and its 720am and you've been awake for a while and oh well it's time to go and BAM traffic up to wazoo.
It's the same thing at night. Last week I was meeting up with my gbf (gay boyfriend) at Frisee but he wasn't ready until 8pm, and lo and behold I was in the Castro by 630pm (I get off work at 6, I work on the Peninsula). Oh, and parking took about 5 minutes. So what did I do? Called my straight gay boyfriend Adam M., and told him to get his ass down and meet me for drinks.
Adam: Let's go to the Bar on Castro!
Me: Can't we just start drinking at Frisee?
Adam: No. The Bar on Castro! They have smoking there...
Me: Awww...dammit. I'm not allowed to smoke :(
Adam: Quitcherbitchin!
I arrived a couple minutes before Adam did, so I had to contemplate what I was going to order. Hmmm...Cherry Coke? That has alcohol in it...right? I'm not 12. I'm 21 and borderline alcoholic. Plus, my innocence is shot to hell after Power Exchange. The bartender who made my drink was sassy and fun. When I asked if there was any alcohol, he poured the drink in front of me and I barely saw any coke/grenadine go in. I tasted vodka. Woo! Panda's happy.
When Adam got there, the pompous ass ordered his usual gin martini (I love you Adam!! :D) and we sat on the deck/patio area sipping our drinks while he took my cigarettes.
I learned that if you sit next to the street, you're going to meet an odd group of individuals. There was the homeless guy who said he hadn't eaten in 3 weeks. Then there was AJ, a homeless kid who was going to Heald College to be an airplane technician and joining the Marines. The guy just made eye contact with me (note to self wear sunglasses more often) and came over and shook my hand. Then there were the couple of hot lesbians that walked by I tried to make eye contact with, because really, even though I'm straight I appreciate hot women with short haircuts. I appreciate them even MORE when I've been drinking, coining my nickname "Ok Ms. I want to make out with you when I've been drinking but straight as an arrow sober".
Oh and don't forget about all the fine looking gay men in their hot d-squared fuck me jeans (tm Darin I).
I love the Castro. And this bar. And Adam for taking me. And the fact that my drink was only 2 dollars and I went to Frisee completely trashed. How classy.
By my calculations as a straight man, going to a gay bar has the following advantages over a normal bar:
- Everybody is way more friendly, as opposed to the stand-offish vibe that normally pervades dance clubs
- People buy drinks for you (!!!!!)
- Much better music
- Much more interesting / colorful crowd
- Everybody is there to dance, not just stand around and scowl / look cool
- Hilariously, about the same ratio of guys to girls as a straight bar (if anyone knows of a magical bar that is predominately female, please let me know!)
So, all things considered, I think being hit on once in a while is a small price to pay for all the advantages that The Bar On Castro confers. Thus, my first gay bar experience was a successful one (had I not brought a female friend to ward off all potential suitors, the night might have been a little less pleasant...).
The Bar on Castro. Aside from creating confusing for those new to the area ("I'm at the Bar on Castro!" "Which one?" "THE Bar!") The BOC is one of the more popping bars on any night. Monday's are particularly packed for 80s night, where the 80s theme not only is heard in the music but with the drinks (drink specials are 80-cents all night)
Even more popular is drag queen Juanita More! and her Wednesday night event, "Booty Call" which promises the "Hottest Gogos" and "Fiercest Trannies." The music on these nights are a toss-up as guest DJs make their rounds every week, but count on some funky lounge or electro-dance. Booty Call also provides "private photoshoots" in the back room. Every week, a different set is created, and the boys line up to have their picture taken, solo or en masse, and their photo will be up on MySpace in a few days. Who would have thought that a photoshoot would be what the gay boys are lining up for in the back room. Hasn't Queer as Folk taught us anything?
Regardless, it's hard to not find a night that the BOC is not packed. It doesn't help that the BOC is about as big as a college dorm room, meaning that put only a dozen people in it and it looks packed, but still, it's for a reason. Just don't expect to be able to perform your practiced dance routine to Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" without spilling everyone else's drinks.
Theresa C. and I had an interesting first night in California. We love everything gay, so we went to Castro and had a lovely, quiet dinner together and drank an entire carafe of red wine. Then, we went to THE BAR.
We walk in and buy a drink. Literally 2 minutes later, two guys turn around and start talking to us, and we instantly become their hags. Oh, life! The funny thing was, they wanted to take us to a place where we'd get some straight play. We gave them a look and said, "Honey, we didn't come to Castro so WE could get laid." They laughed and agreed.
Then they took us to four other bars that I don't remember because they bought us so many drinks.
In conclusion, thanks to Tom and Hiroaki for showing us around, and thanks to The Bar for having a cheap vodka cran.
Let me tell you...I know how to make a great impression on an unofficial first date. Call me Classy with a capital 'C.'
The night started off with a Volunteer Appreciation Night, which was amazing. Free booze shared with a bunch of awesome women with a sprinkle of men. Hells yea.
So I came into this space with a nice buzz. We decided to hit up The Bar because well...the night was still young.
We get a drink. I don't remember what it is but it was fruity and slushy and I just drank it up like water. He dances, I dance, we dance, I dance with men and women...you know the deal. We're having a kick ass time. Sooner or later the room is slightly spinning but I kind of like it because I think it makes me move my hips better.
Perhaps I was making a fool of myself but I remember getting led towards the front door by my date. Suddenly, I have this taste in the back of my mouth. One that I hadn't experienced since freshmen year in college, which was a good 7 years ago.
I spot the trash can and it all just comes out...and continues to come out for the next hour.
But hey...what can I say?! I must have made quite the impression because we've been together since. ;)
Simply.... go here.. get a drink... chit chat a little, have a smoke, get another drink, get drunk, dance like a fool, drink once more, and then move on to another bar.
Cool place to chill... it is a beacon for the stro'. Interesting people. Good place to start out the night.
Holy Moly... the Cosmo's on 80's night are a buck eighty and soooo good. I was frightened at first glimpse to see my cocktail being poured out of a battered pitcher, but, yum!
The dj, well, he either needs some inspiration, new mixing gear or give it up. The only thing that saved him was the totally awesome 80's glampoppunkdivatrashyeuroswing tunes that bring back memories of my favorite pink and white polka-dotted, tab collared blouse with darts and BIG white buttons that flattered my blossoming body drenched in Chantilly Lace.
I would love to thank my lovely, straight housemates who ventured with me because "I swear, straight chicks will be there because straight chicks love gay discos and 80's music." Um, so sorry.... sorry. It was an off night. But not for me! Beyond a few glares (I tend to take over the floor) there were a few hotties that appreciated my love for living life with a fierce shake here, shimmy there, arms in the air and join in on the fun.
Thanks, boys! I heart the Castro.
Never, ever a bad mixed cocktail. Probably the best on the strip.

Okay, so I have been coming to the bar on castro for many years, and while I am not gay....I have my homo friends that I play hag to.
So anyway, I moved away from Sf and hadn't been here for a while....not too much had changed on the outside or inside of the bar. new staff ( too bad the super hottie michael is gone, I could have drinkin' frozen cosmos off of his bare chest all night long!) but punky patrick can make a filthy dirty belvedere martini that would make james bond cry.
So far so good, right? It was Saturday afternoon about 3:30pm, we just ate at osaka sushi next door and after going down the street to shop we decided that a martini was in order. We go in, we order, we get our FANTASTIC martini and proceed outside to the patio....
Now, I dont know if it was the summer sun or too much 50 cent pabst blue ribbon, but I look over and what do I see???? Two guys going at it on the patio... Now i am not against letting someone know you're "happy" to see them...but christ! I saw one guys junk and another guy sucking it...and they actually asked my friends and I for lube. I know this is weird, but I had bought some lube that very day and had it in my purse. My friend told me to give it them, and they got up and *ahem* excused themselves to the bathroom....
What makes ths whole thing even nastier is that when they returned, the guy tried to hand me back the greasy, lubed up after butthole sexin, bottle of lube
ew...
"keep it sweetie", was all I could muster
only on castro my friend. only on castro...
The Bar is one of those places that i always do a "double-take" with in conversations.
Me: "Where are you guys going tonight?"
Friend: "The Bar"
Me: "Which one?"
Friend: "The Bar..."
Its a good place to go and have drinks and dance. The problem isnt with the music or drinks or people... it's just an issue of size (which does matter, right). The Bar is, unfortunately, just too small. They play good music and you have fun there but you get over it after your hit by the group dancing next to you one to many times. Then you find yourself saying, "Lets just go to Badlands or The Cafe".
But if you have the "testicular fortitude" to battle it out with your fellow dancers, by all means... have a great time!
EDIT: They like to charge really random, expensive cover charges for no reason. Why are you charging $5 on Friday when every other bar around is charging $2? And you're not even crowded!!! Get over yourself BOC. Minus one star.
Original:
THIS IS WHERE I GO TO GET MY SWERVE ON. I'm not entirely sure what "swerve" means but I figure with any applicable meaning it's probably appropriate.
80s Night was once fun but has now gotten pretty rank. It's SUPER crowded and everyone is 19 and drunk and GET YOUR HANDS OFF ME and eww vomit on the floor and really is it that hard to play a danceable 80s song because seriously that whole decade was like cocaine and dance music. Or was that the 70s? Anyways, pay a couple bucks more for your drinks and go to one of the other bars in the area on that night.
Wednesdays are Booty Call and it is FIERCE! And because that word is becoming overused I'll try to refrain from using it in future reviews. But yeah, good music and lots of hotties and I'm probably drunk and making out with at least 3 of them. Goodtimes.
Oh and this bar definitely has the hottest bartenders in all of the Castro. And they put out too!*
*Not true.
I love walking into a bar and saying to myself, "I can't fucking wait to yelp this place."
But I'm drunk now.
Another time to properly report back to the yelposphere.
This place? This place rocks. Fantastic DJ. Decent beer selection - really, GREAT for a gay bar. Cool decoration, great A/C.
Really, it's tiny, and it was packed like a sardine can, but I found myself bumpin' and grindin' on the air (my friends didn't dance) next to a pillar near the bar, grinning like an idiot on crack because the music was so awesome. MUSIC SNOB STAMP OF APPROVAL. Yes, that's an official seal. The music is just that good. I don't know who the DJ is, but he should get signed.
I love this place, and I will definitely be returning.
This place RAWKs. Comes highly recommended!
Two Words.... FROZON COSMOS
ugggghhh. soo good!
I fall down. Alot. Mostly after a few drinks (see Fubar review below). So it comes as a complete surprise to me that after going here several times, I have not stumbled down the steep flight of stairs leading to the back bar. Who knew?
Anyways, there is plenty of fun, nice guys here. Not "take home to mom" guys but rather "two dates and make out in the car" guys. Fairly inexpensive drinks, quite a scene outside.
The only downsides would be the tiny, almost non-existent restrooms and I had a shirtless guy rub up against my new H&M shirt with his hairy, sweaty back. Them's the breaks!
So hit and miss it's disgusting. It seems that the BOC reads my mind! When I don't want to go but get dragged there, the music is terrible and a bunch of tragic fake ID queens with the clap are all over me because they think that a fat guy at the bar must have coc or money (neither of which I have). When I really want to go, all of the sudden the dj is playing the best diva house and disco tracks that symbolize the gay scene. And when I feel like picking someone up, well...
If I was reviewing for Thursday through saturday nights, it would be a one star review. Three more stars for surprisingly good service during 3 deep periods, the weird telepathic abilities of the dj's, and the smoking patio that sends me a few more steps each visit towards lung cancer. Oh, and the afternoons are really fun, too.
dude... i am dangerous when i am drunk.
I CANNOT BELIEVE WHAT I DID LAST NIGHT LOL. AND I DON'T REMEMBER. I just remember I was extremely confident.
and somehow i ripped my dior bag. or did someone else do that?
oh yeah, and my mexican friend turned into a pink unicorn last night.
no joke. and no, i was not on drugs

Did you know that there are two sets of bathrooms?
WTF, I had no idea up until two weeks ago!
For YEARS I waited for the ONE stall that I guess is for females only. I think the accumulated time that I have spent waiting in the ridiculous line could have been spent doing something a little more interesting... like I don't know... getting my swerve on. I don't even know what that means, but that's not my point. My point is that boys, there are three stalls on the other side of the DJ booth for you take care of yo bidness.
I wish it were darker cause I dance better in the dark.
Also, I like Thursdays best cause they play hip hop.
It's small, but will always have a place in my heart. 80 cent drink night is always magic.
Why do so many straight people come here? Get a life please.
I cant very well give it a rating, we were in San Fran not long ago. ONe night the bar was open, the next it was closed with a sign on the door "notice of filing" "third offense selling to minors". I guess if you play with fire you get burned.
This was my first time ever venturing to Castro at nightfall, so I was pretty excited. I mentioned this place to my lesbian friend, and she instantly knew what I was talking about. (She used to be a regular :) Anyway, I came last Tuesday for Ladies night and it was fun! THe doorman even gave me a hug!
The place is really cramped, but people seemed to filter out about midnight so it got better. My friend got drinks and my Red Bull vodka was REALLY strong...like, I couldn't see any Red Bull color, lol. This was bad for me, because I don't like the taste of vodka (hence the Red Bull), but I can appreciate the bartender (Dana, I think her name was? super nice) trying to give us our money's worth. I also got a frozen cosmo, which was pretty good. The drinks were cheap! I was so amazed. Oh, and at one point in the night, there were free "shots" of cosmos for the ladies. Hooray!
It was a fun. People dancing, having a good time. My friend said it was a good crowd that night, a lot of ladies. I saw quite a few straight people here (I guess that's a few of you yelpers!) and everyone seemed to have a good time. The music was hit or miss, but overall the vibe was good. I'd come back, esp for 80's night! I just wish the place was bigger!
Great drinks, friendly service, gender neutral, with ton's of raging drunken gay boys on a Friday night! The music is always loud, the drinks always strong, and the people are always friendly. I've come here after work for a cocktail, or on a Friday with some friends for a pre-clubbing drink. They are usually open on the afternoons during street fairs (such as Gay Pride and Castro). Keep in mind that they are CASH ONLY, but there IS an ATM in the back.
Unlike other bars in the Castro which tend to heavily favor the boys, this one is equally friendly to all ages and genders. You'll definitely see more guys in here than gals; but the straight and lesbian crowd will also feel comfortable here.
The interior is dim, a bit modern, and there are some comfortable benches along the wall if you can get to them. On a busy night, this place will be packed shoulder to shoulder. It's a small place to be sure, but there is a front smoking patio for those of you who must have their nicotine.
Come for an after-work cocktail or with friends for loud music and drinks...it's always fun!
Manic Mondays!!
Manic is right! I'll do my best to recall some details, but truth be told, I was 9 drinks into the evening BEFORE we got here.
The place is small; could be cozy on a slower night, but was d@mn near suffocatingly crowded last night (80's Night, St Paddy's). From what I could tell, the decor is modern with what I think was a padded wall opposite the bar? Also, the front, open-air "room" is a nice space for smokers, talkers, chit-chatters, picture takers... Oh, and a coat check... every club/bar/jookjoint should have a coat check.
I don't remember what two drinks I had; X picked a drink for the first round, E picked our drink for the next. But I do clearly recall reacting "Ph*ck! That's cheap! And whoa, this is friggin strong!". After which I have holes in my memory with flashes of talking to a girl in the front room who giggled and looked upon me like I was a lost little puppy for being un-gay in a categorically gay bar...
The music, maybe because I'm an eighties-kid, was so retro-cool! We had a fantastic time TRYING to dance in such cramped quarters, but it was difficult tapping out more than a two-step when its back-to-back-to-chest-to-elbow-to-face-to-bewbies crowded (mmm...bewbies).
Worth another (somewhat sober'er) visit...
______________
E. thought it might be dangerously inviting for me to wear my "kiss me, I'm irish" shirt, to which she would have had lots of fun protecting me. Nothing happened, of course, anyone can clearly see for themselves that I'm not Irish.
Slammed against the hot muscled body of a gorgeous guy while moving rhythmically has got the be the best solution to any girl's bad day.
Damn these boys are hot! I love me some gays....they make me feel pretty too! I mean honestly, no straight man would tell you you're hot without some hidden agenda behind it!
Dancing 80's night at Bar on Castro...so much fucking fun!!! Well no....there was no 'fucking' for me there at all. I just don't have the right equipment.
