I can't say enough good things about the Bar Method!!! If I could give it 100 stars I would! Everyone who knows me knows that I am obsessed with this place and will go crazy if I come less than 3 times a week (I usually go 4 to 5 times). It will be one year next month since I started coming here. I am so addicted to this place...so addicted I even worked at the front desk for several months. Love all the instructors and especially love the owners Laura and Noreen. The studio is a beautiful, clean space (and smells heavenly with all the Jimmy Belasco candles they sell). I never loved working out so much and have never been in better shape (shout out to Pretzel -- my favorite seat work)! I've been to some of the other studios (SF Embarcadero & LA Westwood) and they do a good job too, but nothing beats the San Mateo studio! I think everyone needs to try it for themselves...you'll see, and then you'll have me saying, "I told you so."

My girlfriend in San Diego challenged me to try the Bar Method. She had been raving about it for months. For the $100 intro rate, I figured I could sacrifice the cost of a new pair of shoes for it.
Well, I just finished my first week of the Bar Method...and like many other yelpers, I am addicted! For someone who has joined countless gyms and spent hundreds of dollars running endlessly on the tread mills or trying to remember how to set the weight machines, the steeper price of the Bar Method is personally a more valuable investment. I will just have to adjust my budget and minimize my un-necessary shopping.
I will still go to Optimal Fitness (my gym in San Carlos) for light cardio and the infrared spa (I don't really work out a sweat with the Bar) ; but by far, I am seeing and feeling firmer results with the Bar.
As far as the members...contrary to some reviews, I've found the people to be very nice...at least at the San Mateo facility. I've only encountered females...and like me, I bet most of them are working moms on a tight schedule. They just want to get in, work-out and get out. No time for socializing. No offense. But if you initiate the conversation (note: anybody who knows me knows that I am not shy and will talk to just about anyone), they are very cordial and pleasant.

I work out already. A lot. Ask any Yelper who hasn't seen me since last year. "Where's Mary?" The answer is always "at the gym." Yep. At the gym. 4 weeknights and 1 weekend day. Every week. And I've had a lot of success with all the personal training and pilates. But personal training and pilates has to be scheduled in advance and is generally on a regular schedule which means if something comes up...well you either cancel the gym or you don't have a social life.
So part of the reason I wanted to try The Bar Method was proximity to my office and the flexibility of scheduling. I can get over here before or during or after work with ease. I thought if The Bar Method works, I can cut out some of the weeknight training which would free up my schedule. So my fingers were crossed, "I hope this is a challenging class..." I thought to myself.
But I secretly had my doubts about The Bar Method. I mean, how effective can it be? It's just plyometrics and isometrics right? They're easy right?
WRONG
Let me put it this way: when we did thigh work I felt a deep burn that was hotter than a Santa Cruz Mountain wildfire. The pretzel? Um, I probably won't even be able to operate the clutch on the drive home. This stuff works.
Easy online scheduling and payment - you don't have to deal with it at the desk. You can, but it's a lot easier online.
The staff is friendly and they were interested in my success. I wasn't just a body in a room - I got assistance and correction throughout the class without having to beg for help. Don't let the big engagement rings or the Lululemon gear fool you. This is a great place to get a solid workout.

I have a feeling that I can become a hot mom when I start The Bar Method :)
Based on my dear yelpers' reviews here, I decided to take one class to see how it is. It nearly killed me. I probably can't described myself as a hard core fitness person, but before I was pregnant, I worked out everyday, and I did all kinds of workout. When I was pregnant, I still did modified exercise. Among my friends, I would say that I have pretty good stamina and strength. And most of all, I have good mind power when it comes to pushing myself to exercise.
I took an 8:30 a.m. class on Friday, it was taught by Janell, and only the first 15 minutes of class, I was already feeling the pain. After the class when I was paying, I couldn't even hold my credit card right. I couldn't really kneel, sit, or walk on Saturday, and I'm going back next week.
Like some yelpers mentioned, members there are not that nice. No one was mean to me, but when I met eye contact with some people there, I smiled, and no one smiled back. Was it too early in the morning? I don't know. Still, one lady helped me out with my position, and yes, the instructor was helpful and nice.
The facility is nice and clean. I like it.
Anyways, I'm definitely taking the advantage of the new member special, and I'm hoping that my newborn will work with me that I can go to class as much as I can this month.
I took one star off also because of the insanely high price. I wish it would be more affordable. But if I really am a hot mom after this month, then maybe I'd say it's worth it to pay that much.

Truth be told, I've never taken a Bar Method class. In fact, I'm not certain I can even get into the positions necessary to start the exercises. My wife, however, is among the Bar Method devotees. Having seen more than a few reviews complaining about the price or, worse, revealing that husbands or boyfriends have griped about the monthly cost, I had to speak up. Dudes - get a clue. How can it not be worth setting aside a couple hundred bucks a month so that your wife/girlfriend/partner can get into truly incredible shape, feel great about herself and become so limber that watching her stretch makes the Kama Sutra look like amateur hour? Granted, my wife and her friends were pretty smokin' hot before they started taking these classes (the reviewer that remarked about the MILF factor was right on the money), but even for them the transformation has been remarkable. Rather than stocky, body builder physiques typcial of intense gym workouts, they seem to have developed longer, leaner muscles, not to mention killer abs. From what I've observed, the classes incorporate some of the principles of high-intensity interval training with the body control and core-strengthening exercises of pilates and yoga. Plus it seems to be fun and slightly "evil" (in a good way) in that the students are really pushed to stay in form and get the most out of the positions and exercises. Hot, hot, hot.

Great deal for the first month...you can not beat $100.00 for as many classes as you can go to. The classes are great, but it is expensive and classes fill up fast, especially on the weekend. I have been going for over a year, but go less now since it is harder to get into the classes that work for my schedule.
Up-side...great classes, clean, neat. You really do see results, (of course that comes with a lot of hard work.), workouts are enjoyable - you feel great afterwords, and instructors are friendly.
Down-side...expensive, classes fill up quick, - many times I try to get in a class and it is already full, clientele is not so friendly, a bit snooty, and no cardio with the classes.
Overall, it is good, but for the price you are not getting any cardio. Best to use these classes with another form of cardio workout.

I'm about to end my one month trial here and I have to say that I'm definitely hooked to the Bar Method. I love how the most simple, small movements can be excruciating after doing it 20+ times and that you can definitely feel those muscles burning and legs shaking, i mean REALLY shaking. I'm seeing and feeling a difference already and I'm definitely looking forward to the day where I can wear a size 4! The instructors are in amazing shape and definitely an inspiration.
The facilities itself are really nice and the instructors are very helpful and encouraging. The only thing that I'm not too keen on are some of the snotty cougars that attend this class. But then again, it's kinda funny to see them in full makeup and competing with each other with their lululemon gear and the huge rocks on their fingers. whatever. but i'm not holding that against this studio! or lululemon!
The monthly dues are expensive ($225/mo) but if you go 3-4 times a week, it's totally worth it...especially if you can see and feel changes without changing your diet! And who wants to diet?

I just finished the 1 month introductory student special @ $100 so I feel like I can give a fairly accurate review:
First, the facilities are great...nice, large showers, secure lockers...and best of all, free SOCKS (to borrow). I am someone that always always forgets their socks & this has saved me many times.
Second, the teachers...some are harder than others. They are all in insanely great shape...so much so that you kind of want to kill them a little bit (especially when they're correcting you).
Third, the class itself. This class will kick you ass, literally. The Bar Method is a blend of pliates, yoga & ballet. You use the bar as your support (unfortunately, it doesn't involve actual booze). All the moves are very small, but incredibly powerful. I got more burn out of this class than anything I've done using weights. What I like best, however, is that the class forces you to stretch. As someone who's not so good about the post-workout stretch, this is excellent as I can finally touch my toes!
I've had a moment in every class where I ask myself WHYYYY do I pay for this kind of pain... But 1 month later, I can definitely see the difference. My abs are flatter, and miraculously, my inner thighs have slimmed down.
Now the question is - will I go back? At $20 a class or $225 unlimited per month.. ($200 if you do auto-bill for 6mths)...it's definitely steep. If you're someone who has a trainer - I'd go for this instead. If you're capable of doing your own work-outs at the gym...$225 can buy a pretty sweet membership at some of the nicest gyms in the Bay Area. So, for now, I think I'll chance it with the gym...but if that muffin top comes back, my non-Lululemon covered ass will be going back.
PS. If you have an aversion for MILF or MILF-in-training types with their ginormous rocks & Lululemon gear...I'd do some deep breaths before entering as this place is CRAWLING with them. I felt entirely inadequate and almost, almost bought $84 pants.
PPS. Be warned that Rainbow Pizza is a hop-skip away...do not come to class starving or else you will be tempted.
PPPS. This class also attracts a decent amount of law enforcement types. Good if you're into that kind of thing.
PPPPS. The latest classes are the least crowded. I'd recommend those.

I don't even know where to begin...
A friend of mine told me about this place, but I never looked into it until last month. I signed up for the 1 month introductory student special for $100, and let me tell you, that's definitely a steal! Typically yoga and dance classes run @ $16 + a pop, and so $100 is such a deal if you take advantage of the classes.
This is a blend of yoga, pilates, ballet, and weight strength training. You work out each muscle group to the point of exhaustion. I mean it's to the point where you are burning and shaking, but the results are amazing! Just in a month I can see a difference in my seat, abs, thighs, arms and shoulders -- basically everywhere.
After my introductory trial, I had to sign up for the unlimited class $200 auto-debit. Bar Method motivates me to wake up at 5am to make the 6am classes. I love knowing that my workout is done and complete, and after work I have the rest of the evening to do what I want. I even plan my weekends around my classes. Never have I been so enthused about a class. Knowing how much I pay monthly also forces me to go to class.
The teachers are all wonderful. Each have their own style and personality. They push you, and correct your postures and positions. It's awesome because you feel like you have a personal trainer. The instructors and many of the women in the classes are in amazing shape, which inspires me to want to work out even more.
The showers are so clean, and the women there are all mindful of their time in the shower. It's an unspoken agreement in the locker room to watch your time and utilize the shared space with everyone.
I've been working out for years, and have tried so many different classes and workouts. Hands down, this is definitely the best thing that I have introduced to my exercise routine.

I knew after the first month that it was LOVE. This is probably the only workout that has changed my body in the shortest amount of time.
I used to run regularly but blew my knee. Since then, I've always had to work on keeping weight off. I tried a lot of low impact activities - pilates, daily elliptical, water aerobics, etc., and this is the only one where I have been able to keep the WEIGHT off. I should know..I'm writing this the day after Christmas! :)
It's hard. I mean, really hard, workout. The teachers push you to your limits (think shaking) and make you realize you have muscle in places you would never have known.
Check it out!
PS. Yeah, there are some snotty people, but you get over it. They struggle through the 50 pushups too! :p
PPS. Update 2/1/08 - Since xmas, I dropped another size doing bar method 3x a week religiously. Lost about 5 lbs only though -- I think it's muscle. Woohoo. I really, really wish it didn't put such a dent in the budget!

Feel the burn.
Breathe out.
Sink deeper.
Tighten your core.
I could go on & on & on with all these little incentivizing statements thrown your direction in any given class of Bar Method. It is honestly one of THE best workouts I have ever had! As mentioned in my review of Exhale in NYC, these forms of exercise test you to your limits and you love each and every minute! Well, maybe not when your legs are literally shaking trying to make it to count 20...
What is Bar Method?
I describe it as the most intense combination of Pilate's, yoga, core strengthening and controlled movements - all set to the pumping tunes of the instructors iTunes playlist. The combination of movements, through dedication and time with the studio, show results of: lean, firm and elongated muscles, muscle definition throughout the entire body, improved posture, stronger defined abs and increased stamina.
Bottom line: the class is unlike any other; it will kick your butt with such extreme force that you will beg for mercy ... with a gleaming smile and a growing addiction to attend the next class and the next and the next ...
I found Bar Method last year - heard about it thru friends and finally went down for my introductory class. WOW! I was welcomed in with such a warm response and eagerness to train me on each & every move and the intricacies of them all.
The studio is beautiful - small but beautiful. There are 2 workout rooms that can accommodate larger classes or the smaller more intimate ones. I have only been in the smaller room once - that shows you the popularity. The locker room is minimalist - just the necessities: lockers, showers, counter tops with hair dryers and toiletries - all immaculate.
The owners - FABULOUS!
Laura * Noreen
The instructors - AMAZING!
Tina * Chris * Danielle * Julie
I have to admit that I took a little "hiatus" from Bar for a few months -- travel, got sick, got lazy ... ya know!... I started back on my Spring time fitness kick running every morning and wanted to get back into my love of the Bar (and I'm not talking about the place where I order a martini). I scheduled my class and walked in, a bit intimidated of coming back after a few months - but what the heck! Gotta get right back on that horse! When I walked thru the doors, Laura ran from behind the desk and gave me a big hug and "welcome back Nicole"! Okay now - THIS IS FABULOUS!!! In case you can't read between these lines - not only do you get an amazing workout, but the owners and instructors get to know you - they become your friends and your buds. You look forward to a class like this!!!
I am back and in full swing of my Bar Method addiction!

I'm addicted to Bar Method. No, it doesn't involve drinking, although every time I tell my husband that I need to go to Bar to de-stress he thinks I'm talking about alcohol.
Throughout the class and at the end of each set of movements you will hear women grunt out of relief. That is how challenging the classes are. The instructors are totally approachable and walks around the studio to correct postures, which helps you get a even better work out.
Although this would be my second week there, I can already feel an improvement in my posture and increased energy level.
I'm not sure if I will be able to afford the classes for a long period of time, but I will try my best to. Look out eBay...here I come!

So I decided to stop by today and try a class. I did not get past the receptionist. I was there 5 minutes before the class and they want new people to be there 15 min before, so she was being bitchy.. honestly this is not rocket science its exercise. She needs 15 min to show me the moves, i can pick up the moves watching the instructor. Plus to show me around, which can be done after class. So needless to say I did not go and was pretty pissed off that i drove there. I am sure the class would have been good, but i got so pissed at them, not sure when i will try again. So because of that I am giving 2 starts.. I am sure if I would have gotten past the receptionist I would have loved it. But apparently, I did not.

You won't believe the difference this class makes to your body. I was skeptical at first but if you take it regularly you should see dramatic results in your strength and muscle tone. The routines change frequenly which keep the class interesting and challenging.
The teachers are all very friendly and helpful.
The class rates are on the high side but worth splurging for.

I just took my first Bar Method class and signed up for the $100 intro unlimited month. I chose the San Mateo location because it's a mile from my work and there's no trouble with parking. It was really full--I'm not sure what the class size limit is but I was squished into the corner for a fair portion of the time. They were really friendly to first-timers (show up 15 minutes early, though!): the receptionist walked us through the facilities and told us some basic info about the class, and the instructor asked who the first-timers were so she could give us extra help. They start RIGHT away--I just took the time to stuff my things in a locker and by the time I entered the room they were already well underway!
Now about the class itself. I've never been an athlete in the least--never did well at any sport, though I've tried many, can't run for shit, and my muscles are totally weak. But I just turned 24 and realized my body isn't what it was at 17, and after reading the testimonials on Yelp and on the Bar Method website I decided a good BM (hehe) was just what I needed. Even though I'm totally uncoordinated I was able to keep up reasonably well by watching my neighbors. And of course it hurts, but not to the point where I never want to do it again. In fact, I kind of got a thrill out of it--which I normally don't get by pushing myself hard at exercise. I think watching Noreen, with her incredibly sculpted body, inspired me to get through the whole thing. And she was tough but not scary--when she adjusted my positions she was very friendly and helpful, not critical. Afterwards I was shuffling around like an old woman, and today I'm sore in all kinds of places, but it felt really good and I'm definitely going to make good use of my one-month trial!
Only minus one star because they should have cut the class off at a couple fewer people, and the prices after the first month are pretty expensive. But if it gets me in shape and excited about exercise, it's worth it!
**Update**
I've been to three classes now, and I can already see and feel a difference! I was a lot less sore after my third session. Each class has been less crowded than the one before and the teachers are always awesome. Normally I get bored after 15 minutes at the gym, but at Bar Method, an hour flies by!

I've only just started my one month introductory package (1 month, unlimited classes, $100) and so far I'm really impressed. My body is sore, and I feel skinnier already! I even had trouble holding up my sandwich today...how sad is that? Anyhoo, Hawaii is in one month, and if I can keep up, I know I'll be bikini body ready. I'm not sure any program can get me a model body, but this will be close enough.
Back to the review: the facilities are really nice with showers, towels, lockers, hairdryer, hair bands, etc. People are nice. Location seems to be a bit random. Other than the intro month package, the prices are high (but I've been told the results are worth the investment). You can also buy the DVDs at this location.
Look up the Bar Method in SF, and you'll find more reviews.

I wanted to try a new kind of workout and based on Yelp reviews and at the very vocal urgings of a friend who's been going to Bar Method in SF regularly for a year.
This is a unique experience. First, unlike your regular gyms, there is an upscale ambiance. I learned that the owners designed the space, and I immediately liked them within a minute. Why? the place was light and bright, a nice black solid wood table at reception, blond colored woods and mirrors, and bamboo flooring. Almost felt like I'd entered an expensive day spa rather than a gym. Beautiful white towels, nice cabinetry and free lockers, Grohe taps and faucets for the showers which were laid with a dark grey/black tile - faultless!
You begin by hanging off the wall bars in the entryway to loosen up, open up your chest/back. That's the easy part. The class is at a great pace and if you're not feeling so fit, simply slow down! It's not a competitive sport. Laura, one of the owners, ran our class and had the right level of energy and coaching style for me.
yep, even though I did a 100 mile bike ride a few months ago and am in moderate shape, these moves and holds had my calfs, abs, thighs quivering and jiggling!!!! The moves are varied, distinctive, controlled and wonderful for mind and body.
Price-wise, it is not over the top compared to your facial or hair salon bills. Most yoga places charge $15 per class, I've found, so the $20 per session here seems of better value PLUS childcare services are available at another small fee. Excellent for the stay at home mom's schedule.
I'm tempted to drag my husband in - not sure if this is a women's only kind of club now that I think of it.
Go. Check it out. Feel your glutes. Then you can go to Baskin Robbins guilt-free

I really, really love the Bar Method. I went for two months straight, probably for a total of 50 classes or so, and I'd be going still if my bank account liked it as much as my mind and body did. I was waking up at 5:30 to drive the 15 minutes to take the 6am class on an almost-daily basis, and I can honestly say I was hooked. The facilities are clean and very aesthetic, the instructors are encouraging, supportive and helpful, and once I am again able to afford it, I'll renew my membership. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Three of my friends introduced me to this class. They were all pregnant and said this was the best class to take during their pregnancy. I also must add that they are all athletes, and the fact they would pay for a class when they can run or ride outside is quite amazing.
At first I was skeptical not about the class, but me. I've never stuck to any pilates or yoga class. I found myself either getting bored or frustrated with the fact that my runner legs (tight hamstrings and weak upper body) couldn't form into a pretzel or perform upward dog without hurting my lower back.
However, with the bar method I've gone non-stop. I'm actually quite addicted. I am not able to perform all the moves, but I'm improving. I'm actually building strength and seeing a difference when I ride my bicycle. I have to admit these moves are amazing. They work. I've been a running for 15 years and I have NEVER had my legs shake in in a class because I can barely hold onto a pose.
I have not visited the San Francisco location, but the San Mateo location is perfect. It is close to 92, 280 and 101. Lots of parking and a Starbucks right across the street. The teachers are wonderful and the facilities are the nicest of any pilates, yoga type studio I have ever been in. Showers, hair dryers, lockers, etc.
I would highly recommend you try the 1 month for $100. I'm extremely frugal but I will pay for this class after my $100 month is up. It is well worth the cost.

I tried the Bar Method last summer with a friend and was in so much pain I swore I would never return. Fast forward 8 months - trip to Hawaii 6 weeks away and the thought of getting in a bathing suit was so daunting that I sucked it up and returned. I immediately bought the $100 new student special because I knew that I'd go a lot if I paid the money upfront.
It has been worth every penny - and then some. It has been about 5 weeks, and I definitely can see a difference. I have muscles I didn't know existed in my abs (although they are still a bit covered in fat - but once thats gone, I'm sure it'll be a six pack!), my tush is getting higher and firmer, and my arms are definitely more summer-ready. While I'd still like to have lost a couple pounds before I go to Hawaii next week, I think the sheer change in my shape will make me feel at least a little better in a bathing suit.
I actually gained a couple of pounds over the first 2 weeks, but Laura and Noreen (the owners who are both nice and motivating) convinced me its muscle gain - and I'm choosing to believe them! All of the instructors are great - I have yet to have a teacher I didn't really like.
I am NOT a workout girl - 3 young kids and a job make that hard - but I have definitely becoming addicted to the Bar Method. Despite the cost, I will probably try to keep going 3+ times a week.
My only caveat is that its a bit intimidating to work out with women who I'm pretty sure do their hair and makeup before coming, and most of whom have bodies I can only dream of (good motivation...), and more expensive workout clothes than my work wear, but the results are worth it.

This is a deceptively simple class. It works all those hard to tone areas. Worth the money because I could never torture myself like this on my own. Your feel the burn baby. It is intense enough to bring grown women to tears and you know that is pretty intense because women have a way higher pain threshold than men.
I do not normally rave about group exercise, but I cannot say enough good things about this workout. It is an incredibly intelligent series of exercises and stretches. I have been going for a month now, 3 times a week, and the impossible is occurring... my thighs are getting slimmer, my stomach is getting flatter, and my ass is getting even more perky. I have been a runner my whole life. I have done yoga, hot yoga, Pilate's (with a private instructor on equipment), old school boxing, rock climbing, weight training, swimming.... basically everything. I can honestly say that I am getting the best results with this workout. The results from this group class are on par and perhaps even surpass private Pilate's instruction in a fully equipped studio ( which is beacoup dollars). Better results for a fraction of the cost? What are you waiting for? I am in no way affiliated with this studio. I am just one women spreading the good word to all those who dare to dream about high fashion looks like skinny leg jeans.

So far, so good. I've been doing the $100/first month introductory package, and I love it. The class is sometimes a pain to go to, but my body feels incredible afterwards--especially my butt, thighs and abs. Going three times per week would be ideal, but after my intro package expires, it's not going to happen. $20/class is just too much. I'll have to supplement with something else.
The instructors are incredible. They have great figures, and they are very friendly to beginners (which I like, since I prefer being the expert and get my feelings hurt easily). They will help you get into and hold poses, and reassure you if you aren't quite as flexible as you'd like to be.
Unfortunately, most of the women taking this class are "kept" women from the surrounding area. They are total entitled bitches. There are a couple of other chunky newbies like me, and they're nice, but the women who have been going a while won't even make eye contact with you, which sucks, since I'm pretty friendly.

I've been going for almost a month now, doing their $100 new student special (unlimited classes for one month). I love it! My mom and I have been going no less than three days a week. I am not a workout queen so I am just not the type to go everyday. But even with three days a week, I feel and see results. Everything is getting tighter and man is it hard to hold those poses! I feel my technique is improving and the instructors are all very supportive and great. The studio is beautiful and in a GREAT location for my mom and me. I removed a star because a) the classes tend to get really crowded and the room is getting small for everyone, b) the price is outrageous but I'll justify it as long as I see results and c) despite the friendliness of the instructors, the fellow students are NOT friendly at all. I rarely get a smile back before or after class. But I'll ignore all that because I love the way I feel after class.
