The Bagelry is the best bagel place in Santa Cruz. I've tried all the vegan options (which they have a lot of) and they were amazing.
I suggest the Tofu Tom or the Avocado one on a garlic bagel
Its got the Santa Cruz service and vegan options :).
Apparently Santa Cruzians love this place, judging by the long lines, but I never really liked what I've tried here. Maybe I just think most of these combos work better on sandwiches than on bagels (other than the basic lox, cream cheese and tomatoes) but this place really goes for "weird" rather than "good", like they drew ingredients out of a hat.
Because seriously. How else you come up with "cream cheese, jam, and cashews"?
There's a bunch of hype about this place in Santa Cruz, so I was excited to check it out for the first time today. There's a variety of delicious sounding spreads and bagel sandwiches, but I'm pretty pissed about the service. I paid $5 to be dissatisfied and breakfast is supposed to be the most important part of the day! There wasn't a number/order system, and the dude gave me the wrong bagel. He even made eye contact with me -- further implication that he was giving me my alleged bagel!
I tried to call and complain but they hung up on me. I called a second time and no answer, and now I'm left at home trying to make my "$5" bagel taste better with whatever I can find in my empty fridge.
Maybe I'll go back, but right now I'm staying bitter. Definitely recommend checking to see if they wrapped up the right order before you take that baby home.
What most yelpers don't get is that the Bagelry makes REAL New York bagels. Growing up in Brooklyn in the '50s this dense/chewy bagel was only kind that existed--and therefore imprinted on New Yorkers' taste buds. Since leaving New York forty years ago and living all over the country, I've found that all the chain bagels and bakery bagels, no matter how "New York style" they claim to be are not even close to what I'm looking for--except the Bagelry! I lived in Santa Cruz for twenty years and now that I'm in San Diego wife and I either drive up or implore friends who are going to be there to bring us as many dozen as we can fit in our freezer (which we heat up in an oven or toast). The Bagelry as a concept is strictly "Santa Cruz weird," which I can take or leave, but the bagels themselves are a deliciously unique journey to another time/place.
I normally would stop by the Bagelry downtown 3 days a week until my office was moved closer to seabright. My usual (onion NOT toasted w/ lox deluxe- red onion not green) wasn't difficult but those idiots making it made is seem like nearly impossible. I managed to get the wrong order 3 times. 3 TIMES that's just wrong. Are you really that dumb? Wow I really hope not for societies sake. And there's always the coffee- do you know how the filter works, it's to keep out the grounds, maybe try it out sometime. This Bagelry is terrible!! The most unfortunate thing is that the food is great but maybe I could just make it myself. I now only go to the Bagelry if the line at BurgerKing or horrid ChillOut is massive but I also get the spreads to-go and do it all myself. Who ever owns this place must never go there. I'd send in secret shoppers.
This place is amazing! I used to go in 3-4 times a week for a bagel when I lived in Santa Cruz. Now I've moved down to LA and have yet to find any sort of comparable bagel location. The dense but chewy bagels at the Bagelry are something special. Also the coffee is perfect... mmmm I want some now.
My favorite: Everything bagel toasted with cheese Loiuse (herb cream cheese) with red onions on top. Add a little cayenne pepper at home and it's the best $5 you'll spend.
When I was very small, my dad would go out nearly every week-end and get a big batch of donuts...glazed, jam-filled, maple, bear claws, old-fashioned...as a treat for all of his girls.
What did this girl request?
A bagel.
In the ringed foods battle rink, I have always backed Team Bagel. Everything, onion, or nothing at all. Since switching my other dietary allegience to the Vast Vegan Conspiracy, I have rarely been able to support my dear Bagels. Most fresh bagels are dipped in egg wash, and your average store bagel is normally filled with too many sci-fi ingredients for my mere earthling tastes. -Not to mention that vegan 'schmears' (if I may) generally pale when compared to the memory of yore.
Now, I have found a way to get a reasonable fix off of whole-foods whole-wheat whole-mastication hole-filled bread and hummus, but it is just a ghost of my former saturday morning pleasure. The Bagelry has brought back the joy.
Walking into the airy eatery, I was shocked to see 'vegan...vegan...vegan' plastered all over their massive menu. I hopped in line with the rest of the Santa Cruz hippies and happily awaited my turn. I went with Everything, mais bien sure, with sprouts, cucumber, tomato, and hummus...(I had a plan...hang with me, lads). My compadre got a garlic with creamed cheese and tuna (we-eird). We split a massive deli pickle.
Now, I cannot vouch for her kooky concoction (she loved it...but said that there was too much of their whipped spread...it was honestly an inch thick)...but mine was fantastic. So flavourful...perfect bagel texture...creamy, homemade hummus...fresh produce...good cubed. And their kosher pickles? Huge, less than a dollar, and demon-delicious.
Now, the plan: whilst awaiting the order-up sign, I read into their other vegan spreads and espied bags of day-old bagels for less than 3 dollars. Hello, breakfast-for-the-week. I got some of the whole-wheat onion and a take-away serving of their sundried-tomatoe-olive spread. It was fantastic. Tangy and salty from the nice bites of olive with a good punch of umami to the sides of the tongue courtesy of the sundried tomatoes. Salivary glands: activate!
Hippies, Yuppies, Blue-collars, and suits...who does not get a smile from a bagel? Go, all, and be full-filled. (And bring cash!)
Pink Flamingo.. with green onions on a whole wheat with honest tea cures all. SIGH... after ten years it is a comfort food that has not left me! 3.10 gets me a huge slathering of pink goodness, some amazing customer service and my undying loyalty to this shop. I had craved this but forgot my dinero (cash only) yesterday before my Tea House Spa treatment *CURSES* so today before heading over the hill to class I had to... the spread was a good 1/2 inch thick and there were tons of green onions....
So thus far this week on my teacher/ counselor week off I have
1. gotten my nails and toes did check
2. hour massage with spa and sauna check
3. coffee fix from bad ass check
4. pink flamingo from bagelry check
5. tried kawa (shudders) check (which I wish I could take back!)
next up:
tgi sushi with the lovely latina flor d
mystery lunch with carole g
sleeping in
organizing my teacher crap

I loved all their locations. Very cool people worked there. It has such a Santa Cruz vibe to it. You have to try their hummus on a buttered bagel/sandwich, It's to die for.
Not like, love. LOVE, people. I moved to LA five years ago and have yet to find a bagel place that even comes close to being the Bagelry's ugly stepsister. The bagels are always yummy and fresh, their tuna is great, and the Duke?! Don't even get me started. People who say they've had better bagels are on something. Soquel or Santa Cruz location, doesn't matter, both equal awesome.
yum yum! plenty of seating, fresh bagels, great selection...
i just wish they were open later.
Two words: The Duke.
Your choice bagel with your choice cream cheese and your choice jam, topped with raw cashews.
My choices: plain bagel with plain cream cheese and apple butter jam, topped with raw cashews
There's something about this combo that works very well. An absolute must. When the weather permits, you can sit outside in the side patio area. Perfect way to start your day. :)
Maybe we went on an off day, but this was just "Meh...." I can get a fresher, tastier bagel in Denver (gasp).
The bagels are fine, but it's their fabulous hummus that puts the Bagelry over the 3-star mark.
YUM. These bagels have the best texture ever. Great topping selection too.
When I lived in Santa Cruz, The Bagelry was my hangover fix. This meant that I went there at least three times a week. Now every time that I visit Santa Cruz, I HAVE to go to the Bagelry (often the morning after a long night at the Red Room or Asti). I usually get an everything bagel with half luna spread (ricotta cheese, pesto, and almonds), and half sundried tomato spread. The moxie is also amazing--black olives and green onions on top of cream cheese. I think it is the Duke which I also like--cream cheese, jam, and cashews! All of their spreads and bagels are the perfect hangover fix, and so satisfying. I have yet to find such a good bagel place in San Francisco. Let me make a deal with you Bagelry: if you open one of these in the city, I will eat here every morning.
Fondest of fond memories.
My choice - one side had the garlicky spread with olives on top, the other side (no worries, they didn't touch) had the Sun dried tomato fluff, that was until I met Mr. hummus and everything got screwy. Coffee, a newspaper, and that warm part sunshine back patio under a tree. On the way out an odwalla and chocolate cookie to take home for later...Man I miss this place.
Funny, I thought I'd never forget the names of my bagel spreads- oh well, such is life.
Perfectly sized bagels with great texture.
Exceptionally fresh and tasty toppings and spreads.
Seating available inside and outside: I prefer the outside patio, very relaxing and green.
I make sure to visit The Bagelry every time I'm in Santa Cruz.
So delicious!
Seeing as there aren't many options for bagels in this town, the Bagelry certainly serves its purpose and does it well. My boyfriend and I got the scrambagel (mine was on sesame). It was okay, I wish I had gotten a different option because it was just a bagel with some cooked scrambled egg and some green onion. If you get it, get cheese! and put salt on it! The people were friendly and the place was busy and this was on Easter so that must be good, right? Annnyyyway, whenever I get these in class the cream cheese is delicious and so are the other spreads.
O', ye olde Bagelry, how I love thee. Let me count thy ways:
Hipster lesbian Zami co-op employees, sweet as can be with little pretension. Ingeniously original spreads (I love to make mouth nookie with my dearest Tofu del Fuego--it's yummily vegan with a little bit of spice!). Intelligent newsprint in a handy-dandy pile-- I'm always well-rewarded with a well-drafted Chronicle instead of the decidedly retardo-ironically Right-wing Sentinal. I also adore your beautifully lush garden patio, which is frequented by an adorable orange kitty who loves pets. And you're no money grubber, Bagelry. You always leave my pocketbook delightfully full and springy (but be sure to bring cash, or their ATM will gack you for a whole two fiddy).
I'll never get sick of you, Bagelry. As long as I am near your side, I will visit you every morning for an ample filling of your sweet doughy love. You have everything a girl could ask for in a life partner---I mean, breakfast-style eatery.
....Except *cough* your bagels are a little on the small side. But really... size doesn't matter, when it's love this real!
A hidden gem, truly.
Good food at affordable student prices...
My only complaint is that they are open late hours so I can get my onion bagel with humus after the bar closes up. =(
Oh, Man! This place RAWKS! and its a hop-skip-and-a-jump from my door so even better!!!
I'm a big fan of all of the spreads- my usuals are variations of an everything bagel with pink flamingo and green or red onions
-or plain cream cheese topped with mouthwatering guacamole
-and my new fav is a whole grain bagel topped with their vegan del fuego spread- SO GOOD!!!
updated-
-recently i've been getting their smoked albacore with red onions- definitely a must-try if you're a tuna fan
-and if you're vegan or lactose intolerant they offer tofutti cream cheese in plain and herb
Call me picky. Call me a bagel snob. Call me Shirley. I don't care.
For some reason or another, I strongly dislike the bagels served at the Bagelry. Maybe I'm spoiled, having had Brueggers bagels and other mom n pop bagel operations nearby whenever I grew up. Hell, even Western Bagel in LA was good.
I don't know what exactly it is about these bagels here, but it's like eating a big, heavy, dense, bagel flavored rock. You know how they say eating a bagel is equivalent to eating four slices of bread? Yeah, well the bagels at the bagelry feel like someone condensed a whole -loaf- of bread into a compact size.
That said, it's close to my house, so I may come here when I need a bagel fix and am too lazy to get in the car.
ps: cash only. wtf?
Great service.
Friendly people.
Bigger and more open than it's sister store on Seabright.
A friend of mine that used to work at the Poet and Patriot next door told me that a lot of the staff has been working there forever and that they really know their business. Sweet. Keep it up, sweet people.
One thing's for sure; they definitely know how to make my cucumber and cream cheese on toasted whole wheat sesame. It's not complicated, so I expect it to be top notch.
Dial 'L' for low - come on
all you people say -
Word up.
Friend and I decided to come here for Saturday brunch, and the line was seriously from the front to the back of the place. I didn't want to wait, but my boyfriend insisted on it (I'd never been).
I ordered the lox deluxe on an everything bagel, and instead I received the regular lox & cream cheese on an onion bagel... but once I tasted it, I decided to forgive the mistake, because it was SOOO GOOD. My friend got just whipped cream cheese on an onion bagel. Both our bagels ended up with an insane amount of cream cheese (he actually ended up scraping like half of it off), and it was marvelous!
The ridiculously long line ended up going by pretty quickly, and truth be told it was well worth the wait!
Real bagels! Some of them are a bit froo-froo w/ the raw materials, but they're real and dense.
I used to subsist on the day-olds, and a 1/4 pint of the hummus, from one week to the next.
Good stuff!
The Best Bagels!!
It makes me sad that I moved away from SC!!
I love the egg salad and also the cream cheese with olives an grn. onions.......mmmm, my mouth is watering thinking about it!!
I had such high hopes for this place. I would have been so happy to have found a great bagel place to hit up on weekend mornings.
But, alas, I was disappointed. The bagels here are small and miss the mark on the crispy outside and soft, chewy middle. They clearly appeal to the hippy/Santa Cruz crowd with weird flavors of cream cheeses and bagel sandwiches. Unfortunately, by doing that, they missed making the classics available--like scallion cream cheese.
But, since there are so few options for bagels around here, I'll likely come back, anyway.
A good hippie bagel place with a mind-boggling array of options. I honestly had no idea you could do so much with a bagel. Both raw food types, vegans, vegetarians and protein addicts will find something to satisfy them here (although you might be out of luck if you don't happen to like bagels.)
The fruit salad was completely delicious with a variety of fresh and interesting fruits, and the chai was excellent as well. I could happily drink that stuff all day. I also enjoyed some of a blueberry bagel with honey - simple and good. (Admittedly, I ain't exactly a bagel expert.)
I love the feel of the dining area here. You can plop yourself down, go through three or four newspapers while sipping coffee and chai in the airy dining room, and watch all sorts of people filter in and out. There's a ton of reading material on hand and usually someone is willing to talk in the morning. It's a great place to start your day. And it's open nice and early on Saturdays, when seemingly everyone else in town is either sleeping in (or sleeping off a hangover.)
I haven't had a real salt bagel since I was growing up in the small town of Murphys. Pairing this giant soft pretzel with cream cheese and some sparkling cider on the side makes for a happy lunch.
Service is great, cost is great, plenty of seating, nice patio and of course, great food. A+ in my book.
It's a bagel shop, granted probably a better bagel shop than many, certainly chains like Noahs but at the same time when i'm paying lunch like prices i sorta want lunch like quantity because when i go there i basically leave thinking that was pretty good but i'm still hungry. If it were cheaper i'd totally be down to get two then i'd be set, but i'm a student and thats bank
Bagels, good.
Spreads, awesome.
Homemade chai, tasty.
Servers, friendly.
I just wish they'd remembered to give my friend the bagel she ordered. It was a long walk back to my car, and we were pretty disappointed when I opened the bag to see one bagel sando instead of two. :-(
It could happen to anyone. I'm sure I'll be back.
This place is one of my Santa Cruz faves for two reasons.
1) They have fantastic egg salad, which I thoroughly enjoy on a toasted three-seed bagel;
2) It's located two blocks from my friend's apartment, so when I stay there for the weekend (which I often do), and am very hungover (as I am often am), it's the perfect place to get breakfast and coffee without overexherting my partied-out self. I'll grab the good stuff to go, then drag myself back to my friend's place and recover by eating, lying on the couch, and watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer on DVD. Score one for me.
This place always has the most friendly and nice people, people that seem to be good people who even perhaps like there jobs. This is always so nice to see.
So the place is a little lack luster looking, plain, but hey I'm not there to be entertained. They have a little, tiny outside patio area that's kind of cute if you can get a spot.
The bagels are pretty good and they have tons of different spreads to suit your desire. Also, different little salads as well, the fruit salad was always very good and fresh. Plus they have tons of different juices and stuff, as well as coffee but not espresso.
The prices are pretty cheap, they have day old bagels for cheap if you want, just get a good spread to go with it.
Great local place.
This place is so awesome and unique. Its the only place I know, where I can get a meal for under $4 and be perfectly content. Aside from the great ingredients (bagels, spreads, veggies) the best part about the Bagelry is how you can completely modify every part of your meal. I always get half of one type of bagel and half of another, and the I add very specific changes to each half bagel. The bagel-makers here are absolutely great, as they are fully up to the task for every type of modification.
These days I've been getting a half egg-salad (the best ive ever had) and half Moxie (plain cream-cheese, green onions and olives) with cucumber on top of the egg salad and tomato on top of the moxie! Each of these slight changes adds so much to the overall experience at very little cost.
Ive been going here for two plus years now and have never been dissapointed. Love it!
Ahhhhh the Bagelry, home to many strange and wonderful creatures who spend their time making beautiful bagel sandwiches for the strange and wonderful creatures who roam the streets looking for tasty treats.....that rhymed.
Ok so here's the skinny on the Bagelry.....it's great. I worked at the place for a year and never got tired of the food. There are many different options for the elitist and snobby eaters of Santa Cruz. Their vegan menu is off the chain with whole wheat bagels, tons of delicious and diverse tofu spreads and vegan soups made from scratch daily. Try the New Delhi spread; it's filled with curry tofu, raisins, cashews and apple chunks. It's refreshing on a warm sunny day.
Everything except the tofutti spread is made from scratch there so you're garanteed freshness. Many of the sandwiches you can find at other places (e.g. creamcheese, lox bagels, turkeybagel, scrambagels) but for the more adventutous appetite, try the fandango spread with red onions, spicy chilli's and other various goodness, or their tomato herb spread.
The service is very down to Earth and efficient. Many people working there will strike up a conversation if time allows and are quick to make a damn fine sandwich. An entire meal at the Bagelry will usually run you under 5 bucks so it's a great place for a budget. Add the half dozen day old bagels for 2 bucks and you've got lunch for a week.
If you chance to head in during rush hours (i.e. mornings or lunchtime) there will be a line but it moves relatively fast. Parking right next to the place is pretty difficult but there are many free lots within walking distance. Overall, the Bagelry is a damn fine eatery with many options and easy on your wallet. Go there and make sure to leave a little tip!
I had the pink flamingo ... it's alon smear with a bagel , I choose pesto. It was pretty yummy and perfect for a mid day snack ... very quick service but I think its a tad expensive my bagel sandwich was 3.10 which I think nis pricey for just a bagel and smear. Their bagels are made old fashioned style , boiled. They does use sugar to make their baels so I'm guessing if you can't have sugar or trying to cut back , this is good baery or baelry to do so.
am i the only person in this whole town that is not super impressed by the Bagelry? i've eaten her lots of times, hoping just once that the person taking my order would be friendly, or that my bagel would be toasted beyond just luke warm. okay, sometimes i get a friendly person but they really need to toast the bagels, not just heat them up a little.
maybe it's me but give me a Noah's bagel over the Bagelry's anyday! i'm still pissed they closed the Noah's at the Capitola Mall to put in another Starbucks. :(
I love the New Delhi spread. Savory curried tofu with apples, raisins, and cashews. Hearty and healthy: it's a great alternative to cream cheese. When I'm feeling less health conscious, or just want something sweet, I love the oatmeal date bagel with honey/date cream cheese. So good. Picking up one (or two) bagelry bagels before work was always a good way to start off the day.
If you want to get a bagel in Santa Cruz. Get it here. The best bagel and coffee. Remember its cash only.
