I fancy myself a bagel-twice a day,...sometimes more. This is opium den of carbs. The bagel-to-spread ratio is sometimes off, but they get the idea. The tuna melt is 'to die for' and they have the BEST (yes, caps) low fat cream cheese i've had (i've had a lot).
Bottom Line: It's hard to go wrong with any menu selection.
Wow.
Just wow.
I got an everything bagel with butter (my standard) and their coffee. The coffee was good and the bagel was spot on. The garlic and salt were so prevalent, I felt I was swathed in a sea of galt, or sarlic, whichever hybrid name you prefer.
I would give them four stars, but I took one away for service. Its not that it was bad, it was just dumb, and inefficient. They had 5 people doing 2 (maybe 3) people's worth of work. ANd its not that they were lazy, they all just kept getting in each other's way. Fuck it, I don't know, its tough to explain, they just really need to rework their system (like maybe having one person designated as cashier, as opposed to each person fighting over the register so they can get to the next customer.)
True story: I've walked clear from the Montrose L to go here.
I'm not really sure why. I wouldn't do that if I were YOU, but still, if you're in the neighborhood and want a bagel, this place is real deal.
Visiting from the west coast where our bagels are lame! The bagels here were awesome - perfectly chewy and soft with the best texture. One downer was the cream cheese was not stellar, I got the strawberry and it was neon pink and not super strawberry tasting - but the bagel was so good that I moved on and enjoyed my breaksfast.
One last thing the lady working the register was so charming - gotta love an east coast accent with a bit of additude to boot! :)
Came here on a friend's recommendation to buy a half dozen bagels before I flew back to Seattle. They throw in 2 free bagels every time you buy a half dozen (or 4 free with every dozen), so I got 8 bagels for $4 and some change. Brooklyn Bagel didn't do that, so a big fat star goes to The Bagel Store for being generous. The seasonal pumpkin bagel was so so, leading me to think pumpkin and bagel aren't a match made in heaven. On the other hand, the pumpernickel was great. The way it was shaped - hand formed and rustic - was a sign of its authenticity.
I love this place. The guys who run it are fast and friendly, and you always get a healthy shmear.
A bagel is a bagel and this is a good place to get one.
your bagels are delicious but for fuck's sake get a second toaster. Any weekend morning the wait is unnecessarily about 10-15 minutes due to that damn solo toaster! I'm sick of seeing queued up bagels - every weekend.
Bagels are ah-mazing. I also like getting and egg sandwich with the sesame bagel. Keeps me full for like 7 hours. They are pretty generous with their smear, I usually have to scrape some off. Do not live your life without trying the french toast bagel and the pumpkin cream cheese. You will thank me.
When I used to live here, I never considered stopping by. I though all bagels are the same. I came there lacking of cash so I got myself a bagel. The atmosphere is good and they have tall ceilings. The servers were all friendly. The bagel was big and yummy. One of the best I have ever had. They also serve other cheap food items. Not as crowded or rushed as the other coffee places on Bedford, well at least when I got there.
Over sized bagels which are more a part of this neighborhood than these lollygagger knit-caps sulking about and enjoying their trendy yoga and "veganism".
Try a pastry after yoga, then perhaps trying a bagel sandwich filled to the brim with their Boar's Head roasted beef.
I remember once I had a lady-friend in my company here. I offered her a bite of my pink-coloured topping which was on my everything bagel (toasted). I assured her it was strawberry, her favorite. After biting in she recoiled only to find my topping was, indeed, salmon flavoured cream-cheese
I wish there were more options for bagels in the neighborhood, but unfortunately, I'm faced with Dunkin Donuts or the Bagel Store. I choose the bagel store over DD most of the time, but I'm never satisfied. I'm just not impressed by the bagels, or their prices, or the fact that the store is always so crowded and the people preparing your bagels are so disorganized.
Every once in awhile, a bagel with plain cream cheese, or butter, can hit the spot, but most of the time I'm left feeling like I spent way too much money for nothing. I wish there was another option, but DD is even worse.
I'm dropping this a star. I keep getting bagels with almost nothing on them. RIP OFF.

Meh. These are the closest bagels to my house and I wish they were better. I mean, they're no… Read more »
Ohhh this is one of the first places I went to when I moved into the neighborhood 3+ years ago and I still go there regularly. The bagels here are awesome and huge and awesome. My absolute favorite is the french toast bagel toasted with tofu cream cheese. YUM. The powdered sugar on the outside is fantastic and sweet and it sits on your lips while other people secretly laugh at you. My other favorite is the multigrain which they have in regular or everything. Yum.
Their coffee here is pretty good (better than dunkin donuts or the bodega) and they have soy milk which is nice.
The best thing about this place is the people who work here. Everyone is always super nice, even when they are really busy and people are talking loudly left and right. I feel like this place has all the great qualities you expect to find in a neighborhood joint. Great job guys!
The worst thing about this place is that it's always packed. If you try to go at any point in the AM, especially on a Sat or Sun, expect to wait in a line full of hungover hipsters! The line usually moves pretty fast but there are some days you just don't want to wait anymore than 2 minutes for a cup of coffee.
Wow, these are some excellent bagels. They are definitely what you expect when you think of a NY bagel - toothsome on the outside and soft on the inside. Yes!
I got two free with the half a dozen I ordered. I got some of them super fresh, right out of the oven. I recommend trying the french toast bagel if you've never had one - it was real good.
We didn't even eat the bagels the day I bought them. We stowed them away in the freezer the day of and we've slowly been eating away at our collection ever since. They held up really well - I'll have to go back sometime to have one fresh!
even though all i ever order, when i get my morning bagel, is toasted sesame with plain cream cheese, this place wins. it was a silent competition between The Bagel Store and Tal's Bagel in the UES on Lexington. Only because i live near The Bagel Store, and i work near Tal's. On my day off, i get Bagel Store, when it's a working day it's Tal.
This place wins. It's a better homemade bagel. it's airy, and light, and their cream cheese compliments it very well.
Another observation that's a little off topic: Why doesn't NY have blueberry bagels? I've heard instead of Blueberry bagels, NY has the French Toast bagel. Hmmm. i'm tempted to try it.
I love the Bagel Store. Unlike pretty much every other bagel experience, I feel like the quality of ingredients that one can put ON the bagels are great. And you don't get yelled at before ordering, either. The bagels themselves are good and fluffy and not so huge that you can't finish them or anything. I love that there are multiple multi-grain/wheat options. The whole wheat everything is delicious. And the multi-grain is awesome with any sweeter spread. The lox is fresh and delicious. And as it's one of my favorite foods, that's key.
It's funny- it's a tiny place, it's a little silly, but I take everyone who visits here. I just can't help it. And I take them here over most other bagel places. I love David's Bagels in Manhattan, but... it's a little more of a challenge and a LOT less friendly.
On my way to the "L" train in the morning there are two essential objects that are no-brainers, the New York Times and a good bagel. I had just finished an article in the Business section, another "doomsday" reminder, in which an auto plant in Wisconsin had just constructed its last SUV. Thus, placing the automotive behemoth with the same fate as my dad's yellow Fiat and the smooth talking Mercury Capri that used to repeat the immortal words of "your door is ajar" when any of the hatchback's two doors were opened.
I then, looked up at the bagel selections and the thought donned on me, what ever happened to the Jalapeno/Chedder bagel? Does it now share the same fate as the almighty SUV? There's no way that the economic downturn could have trickled to the reaches of Jalapeno peppers. Listen, everybody loves a good Everything bagel with CC or a fresh Cinnamon Raisin with butter. But fans alike can all vouch for the fact that the Jalapeno/Chedder bagel probably had the best chance of joining the status quo of bagel selections. At any given moment, I could walk into any nook in this city and find a Plain, Sesame, a Poppy, or even an Onion bagel for that matter. To be able to confidently request a Jalapeno/Chedder bagel and not have the store owner go cross-eyed is not what I am striving for. I just want a simple explanation.
To those of you who have arrived at this bagel spot, post-Jalap/Chedd, you will have had the wool pulled over your eyes while sampling their latest creation, Jalapeno cream cheese. My friend started sweating from it. That's probably a good thing. The egg sandwiches are great but what gives? Can I just get one egg? Oh yeah, and to all you soccer moms, start learning how to cram eight soccer balls into a Mini Cooper.
Everything I tried at The Bagel Store left me super impressed. The bagels were a great texture and were enormous! A french toast bagel with butter and another bagel (I forget which) with cheddar spread. Oh my, those were really freakin tasty! And incredibly filling...I had trouble making it through even half a bagel (and trust me, I can EAT). The iced coffee was also really good. It's a bit cramped inside but we found someplace to sit (in the window) to enjoy our gigantic bagels. I'd definitely like to get back there soon.
I loved you, Bagel Store. I really did. For a long time there was nothing I would think about on a Saturday morning other than getting out of bed to pick up an ooey gooey bagel, crispy on the outside, with a delicious spread on it. Just thinking about it now makes me want you. But alas, our relationship has been tarnished forever.
Today I went to you for a tasty morning treat, and you welcomed me with your delectable fresh baked smell. The bagel guys wrapped one up for me to take back to my place, but they must not have been paying too much attention to what they were doing, otherwise this horror might never have come to light. It was packed as always. The bagel was still warm when I opened the package. I lifted half of the bagel to reveal the spread inside, expecting a perfect dollop of cream cheese. What I found was not at all what I expected...
You took a sh*t on me today Bagel Store. A giant rat turd sh*t on me.
I won't be coming back. I may look in as I pass, and think about the good memories we had prior to this incident, but know this: I am not smiling because of those memories, I am smiling because I am on my way to the L train to go to Ess-a-Bagel.
Sincerely,
Jason
PS: I know you got a 9 on your last inspection, but you should really get that checked out!
I grew up in New Jersey and knew what a bagel tasted like. I moved to Boston for college and forgot. Glad I'm living in New York right now and get to eat at The Bagel Store, as it has jogged my memory of what a cheap, filling, delicious breakfast is.
There's so many choices here, something you can't always count on when you go into a hole-in-the-wallish sort of breakfast joint. Though the idea of tofu cream cheese gives me the heebie jeebies, I appreciate that it's offered to the patrons who are into that stuff.
Lots of meats, spreads, and types of bagels. The jalapeño cheddar bagel is extremely hard to stray from! Be warned!
This location is smaller than the one on Bedford Ave, but I think the bagels are better. The guys who work here are nice. I like to sit outside on the stoop when I eat, weather permitting.
My bagel this morning was like sex: Creamy, hot, and when I put it in my mouth, I made sickening noises. The kinds make crazy jesus freaks stand in the streets with signs that say, "Jesus wouldn't LUST over that bagel like you do"
Here's the deal. The everything bagel with tofu scallion cream cheese is better than the one at Bagelsmith down the street. I know, I knOW! The service is a bit awkward however, and somehow you feel like you're in a bagel factory. The everything bagel is saltier, and more flavours, AND the tofu scallion cream cheese has more scallions!
I love the sign that says, "Bedford's Real Fu**in' Bagel Man". That gives this place serious bagel credit.
I'm somehow partial to Bagelsmith as a bagel experience, and I haven't tried the other bagels at Bagel Store to make the comparison. There are no egg-everything bagels here, however, so it's a different thing altogether. Ah, I'm so over-analytical about my bageltry... Maybe I should just stop eating them, since they're terrible for you.
I tried the bagel store today and it was alright. I purchased 2 bagels, the everything multi-grain bagel with low fat veggie spread and the french toast bagel with butter (only because people were raving about it on yelp). The everything multi-grain was wayyyy to salty for my taste buds. I examined the outside of the bagel and saw big chunks of kosher salt. Also, I wish it was toasted. I assumed that the bagels would either be fresh and warm or toasted. The guy at the counter just sliced the bagel out of the baskets behind him and put the spread on it. When I realized that it wasn't warm, it was too late to ask him to toast it because he had already put spread on it. The french toast bagel I ordered to be toasted and with butter (the guy at the counter recommended). It was good, but too much butter. Honestly, I'd rather eat french toast the standard way, but if you're on the go, I guess this is a good alternative. I came around lunch time, perhaps if you go when they open, the bagels are hot and fresh. I couldn't taste the freshness of these bagels. They do have a wide array of spreads including tofu spreads instead of cream cheese. s
The total came out to $4.20. That's very affordable in my book. I only had half of each and I feel unsatisfied. If you are planning to go out of your way to try these bagels, I'd tell you to pass.
These bagels are fluffy and delicious! I have never been disappointed.
I moved away from Williamsburg last summer and I can say without pause that the thing I miss most are the bagels from this place. The best is when you get in early in the morning and get them when they're still hot from the oven.
I have a huge sweet tooth so the french toast are my favorite. You don't even need cream cheese just butter or plain- they're that good.
I cannot rave enough.
Crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, a million different flavors + perfect cream cheese. This is the first place my W coast transplant sister wants to go when she comes to visit and the last place I stop on my way to the airport to visit her. Plus, awesome service-- they're friendly and remember my usual order, even after I go away for a month, and double check when I add things to my normal order to make sure they don't overcharge. The french toast bagel with cannoli cream cheese makes a great dessert, too. If it didn't require an extra stop at the ATM (boo, cash only), I'd probably live there.
Also nice that they're open much later than the bagel shops I'm used to in Jersey.
best bagels around hands down. creative sometimes alternating bagel flavors (jalapeno, french toast, strawberry, pumpkin) and cream cheese (rocky road, cake batter, rosemary) and old standby flavors are just as good! I've tried a lot of bagels over the years all over the area and abound and these are the only ones I'll buy anymore.
I love me some locks and cream cheese..
I could not believe the 5 pounder I got from this place, they really hook it up.
I was in a food coma for about 2 h after demolishing "it".
Great bagels and friendly service. Typically.
Once the line starts forming it becomes a crazy mess of confusion and "who's next" shouting around. Be prepared to shout your order or you'll be waiting for it to calm down.
The bagels here are enormous. Crusty & chewy inside. If you get an everything or sesame, etc. they are COVERED in the coating. Good stuff.
I was never a big bagel fan until I started coming here. For $2.70 you get an awesome bagel with almost any kind of cream cheese mix imaginable that fills you up. A few weeks ago I got a toasted everthing bagel with bacon and cheddar cream cheese. It was so amazing I group texted a bunch of my friends as soon as I was done that I had just eaten the best bagel of all time. Now everytime I go there I get it because I'm afraid if I pick something else it might not match the goodness that bagel brings me.
Also I like the thuggish looking dudes working the counter at both locations. Who came up with that combo? I think its hilarious and it works for me.
Toasted sesame seed bagel with jalapeno cream cheese- YES! Ask for more jalapenos with this one.
I wake up in the middle of the night with severe cravings of their bagels..
not really, but almost. its that good.
I'm not really sure if it was my level of hunger, my desire to get out of Manhattan, or the Yelp hype I read prior to my visit, but it matters not... the bagels were f'ing great!
I really enjoyed the whole wheat bagel with scallion cream cheese.
It's pretty convenient... 3 stops on the L into Billyburg. And 3 bagels to-go!
the amount of "everything" that goes on the everything bagel speaks for itself. there are times when you cannot even see the bagel. this is the way it should be done.
every type of bagel and spread i've gotten here has been superb. there are no better bagels around.
however; i do have some "cons" to address.
a) get organized! they are chronically understaffed, there is no ordering/receiving system, and i've gotten the wrong bagel twice.
b) GET DECENT COFFEE. the coffee is horrible.... i'd even say undrinkable.
but like i said, the bagels are incredible.
amongst the traditional and traditionally innovative choices, the one 85c multigrain everything bagel alone was worth 5 stars.
i saved (the better) half of it for lunch at work the next day. but until then, i spent the whole morning searching all over my office for a recurring smell of mild decay. having sniffed everywhere in futility, i was genuinely plagued by the thought of a camouflaged used condom or dead fish head, secretly planted behind the shelf or underneath the carpet, by those who defriended me on the facebook...
of course it was only the roasted garlic on my bagel. but for all the hassle it single-handedly caused me, minus 1 star.
First, to clarify, this review is based on the Bedford Ave. store, but I imagine it applies to both places...
Oh my God Oh my God oh my God.
Oh. My. God.
How much do I love this place? A lot. A lot. A lot. So much that it makes me repeat myself three times!
The bagels are great during normal breakfast-type hours, of course, but my little secret is coming here for a strange yet glorious dinner: a toasted plain bagel with that lovely, freshly-sliced bologna, mayo, cheese... and a black and white cookie. Even the black and white cookies taste better here. Hell, even the Snapple tastes better here.
Okay, now I want to go there, but it's 2:30 AM. Sigh.
I'll confess that I'm not an expert on bagels. I certainly can't declare where the best bagel can be found with any confidence, but this morning I had THE best bagel that I've ever had at The Bagel Store.
For less than the price of a latte at Starbucks, I got a husky onion bagel (topping of choice free, I went with butter) and coffee. It gets crowded in the small space quick, but the jaded hipsters shooting distasteful looks couldn't stop me from bellying up to the window bar, tipping my head and going cookie monster on that bagel.
They really are better in New York.
Your bagels kick ass, your operations are a mindfuck.
Yea, you too Bedford Ave. location.
These bagels are EXCEPTIONAL. Every time I come here, there's a line because this place is so popular. Still, I'm surprised I've never heard people talk about it! (This particular Bagel Store on Metropolitan Ave. is NOT the same as The Bagel Store on Bedford Ave., and ironically, I've only heard people talking about the Bedford Ave one.)
The bagels are fresh, and are made on-site. They are large and flavorful. There is a huge selection of cream cheeses and spreads and toppings that you can get. I am a fan of the lox spread. Prices are reasonable!
In a crate there are bags of "day-old bagels" which are $1.75 for 6 of them. They are bundled kind of randomly, so you don't know what you'll get (surprise!), but I sometimes get them because I find it to be a great value!
The staff here is wonderful. They are fast, they are friendly, and they call you "bro" and "hun" in a non-creepy way.
This place is amazing. I come pretty much every weekend to buy bagels for brunch - a mixed bag of 8 for $3.60. If they seem to have run out of a particular type just ask - I've had mine thrown from the back fresh out of the oven (or whatever bagels are cooked in).
The bagels are excellent - chewey, fairly dense. I usually go for the French toast for breakfast, and am a fan of the jalapeno ones too.
There is usually a line, which will go out the door after 11 on weekends, but it always moves fast.
If you're short on money and not too fussy, they do cheap bags of day-old bagels, I think for $1 or $2.
i typically get a few bagels here for my saturday and sunday breakfasts.. always awesome bagels!
definitely try the french toast bagel, which has a bit of a cakier texture than a 'regular' bagel.. but its a sweet desserty type of bagel that is delicious and a bit unexpected at the same time.. goes great with cream cheese, but i'd avoid trying to make a sandwich with it (doesn't go so well with savory meats/cheeses).
i usually get some everything bagels, too, and either fashion a sandwich out of cold cuts (procured from c-town on graham) or maybe an egg sandwich with salami and cheese or something. i live basically across the street, so its easier (and i have more flexibility) to make my own sandwiches from these excellent doughy marvels rather than have them make something for me..
note- this place gets crazy crowded in the mornings.. which is another reason why i choose to just grab a few bagels and run home to concoct some delicacies and brew some coffee..
