Tujunga, CA
Although I am a Sunland-Tujunga local, and patronize other food spots in this same little plaza, today was my first encounter with this pleasant little bakery.
I should have checked them out much sooner!
Walking in, ones olfactory is assaulted with aromas. This is how bakeries should smell and seldom do! Jennifer the "do-it-all" person was very hospitable and helpful, sensing correctly that this was my first visit. She patiently answered my questions and made me feel welcome in this cozy little spot.
Overall impressions: prices are a bit high, but the quality and quantity makes it worth it. For example, I ordered their French Toast which seemed pricey until the order came, which consisted of huge slabs of the best cinnamon French Toast I have ever had! Also, the wait time for food seems long, but this food is all handcrafted to order so those of you in a hurry or more inclined toward fast food breakfast joints, this is not it. Again, worth the wait. The sheer number of bakery offerings makes it a challenge to order breakfast and/or bakery goodies since they have so much on the menu and of diverse offerings.
Also, the clientele in the venue were all wonderfully nice and polite. This place seems to attract them and it made the visit very enjoyable by the company alone.
Another Yelper mentioned the difficulty accessing this plaza but if one knows the streets in Sunland and planS the route, it is not really a challange. I am in this plaza a lot at two other food venues there, and have little frustration with this or problems accessing it although traffic volume on Foothill is more of a challange here than access to the plaza. However, at 7 AM on Sunday in Sunland, even Foothill Blvd. is a ghost town so at that time it is a non-issue anyway.
They are also open at 7 AM even on Sunday, which is perfect. In Sunland-Tujunga, not many quality venues are open this early for breakfast, so I adore any joint that opens for us early birds, unlike some fooderies in the area who laughably advertise "breakfast" but do not open until 11 AM. That's when some of us are ready for lunch!
Finally, I must mention the cinnamon sticky buns-Food Orgasm!
Oh, yes, I shall return! -

London Fog - Earl Grey Latte with Homemade Vanilla Syrup, a simple syrup with a pitcher full of real vanilla beans.
Every time I step in the Back Door Bakery, there is a new bakery treat I fall in love with. I'm glad I'm not as fickle with my lovers as I am with baked goods! Deborah is definitely a sweet genius. Honestly, she is supremely talented at making delectable delights! I can't remember anything bad here yet!
Other top choices:
GREEN SMOOTHIE - made more green (ask for celery if you want a real green punch!), more fruity (heavy on the mango or pineapple) or just any way you like it (you can even have it with a raw "pasteured" egg for something extra creamy). Note: Pasteur relates to the animal being able to "go to pasteur" and not pasteurized
Jungle smoothie - banana, mango, pineapple and coconut milk
Hash Browns, HASH BROWNS, HASH TO THE BROWNS!! Crisp and Delicious
Anything with a Poached egg
All the croissants but especially Orange Almond, Mushroom and Swiss and the Classic Guittard Chocolate Croissants (said with a sexy french accent of course)
Lemon Meringue Tarts
Chocolate Chip cookies with FRESH MINT
TOP SANDWICH:
Definitely Turkey Rueben, Delicious Turkey Breast, Swiss Cheese HOMEMADE Sauerkraut on Rye Bread
and just in case you are in a breakfast mood and you love onions, go for the Fried Egg Sandwich.
The Backdoor Bakery is simply genius! I never thought a bakery like this would be in Sunland!1 Previous Review: Show all »

I live exactly 8 minutes away from the Back Door Bakery, passed it numerous of times SHOOT I passed it today on my way there, had to bust a U-turn then finally made my way in. It's the cutest neighborhood bakery/coffee shop ever, I'm in LOVE!!!! I can't see or understand why anyone would want to go to the Starbucks up the street when this little gem is right here. Sorry Starbucks but you won't be seeing me anytime soon now that I have Back Door Bakery in my life.
EVERYTHING they make and serve you is made by scratch: pastries, salad dressing, mayo, ketchup, etc. You can taste the quality and heart they put in their dishes. They make you feel very welcome and take good care of you, Jennifer is such a sweetie, very polite and attentive. They offer you the option of ordering and eating then paying later (before you leave of course) which I didn't even know places allowed such a thing. The counter is cover with an array of breads and samples, desserts and muffins, breakfast sandwiches and croissants. They also have $1 truffles :] Their wall have little art pieces that I think you can purchase if you're interested which I think is so cool because I have a feeling they're local artists. After sorting through all my options I ended up ordering a hot chocolate and that was truly one of the best hot chocolate's I've had in a while. I also grabbed a chocolate croissant; the dough is so fresh and tasty, the chocolate is rich... MMM MMM GOOD!!!!!
I can so see Back Door Bakery being part of my everyday morning routine before I roll into work now :]
You guys are amazing!!!!
(They have FREE Wifi by the way!!) -

I love this little bakery, it is a cool addition to the neighborhood. I love that the food is fresh and condiments and such are made from scratch! I am addicted to their sandwiches (particularly the Caprese which is tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, basil, olive oil on yummy french bread) and the breakfast hash browns!!!!

OMG OMG OMG!!!!! I lived up the street from their old location in Silverlake. (they were evicted from their location attached to modem salon BY the owners of la mill.... the owners were friends or something.) the reason they were kicked out is because la mill KNEW they could never compete with this place.(shady backroom deal style. can't prove it, but i know it happened.) i have not been to sunland yet, but making the trip tuesday. my next day off. Their savory croissants were absurdly good. everything is quality. i have been looking for a good 5 years to see where this place would turn up again. AND HERE IT IS!!!!!
anyone who home-makes ketchup is gangsta in my book.
so this is a 5 star review of a place i have not been to yet. but this place has become the stuff of legend to me. -

Finally made my way to Back Door Bakery today. I live close by, and was a customer of the Silverlake location. From the moment I walked in until it was time to leave an hour later, I was feeling nothing but warmth and fuzziness. Thank you, Back Door Bakery, for choosing my neighborhood as your new home.
When you walk in, there are a TON of samples at the counter. I was hungry, so I must confess, I had more than a few :) French toast (leftover from the morning) and croissant bread pudding. Let me tell you, I just about died after trying them. Not too sweet, not too salty. Moist, fresh, and uber-delicious! But I didn't want to meet my maker yet; I still had a grilled-eggplant-and-veggie on whole wheat to try.
From the first bite to the last, this sandwich was incredible. The portion is just perfect (not too big, not too small), which leaves room for a smoothie and dessert. The cashier/barista, Audrey, was very friendly, informative, and sweet; she even made an extra amount of fruit smoothie (ordered by another patron) so she can have us try a sample. Smart move, Audrey; it compelled us to try the green smoothie, which is one of the healthiest (and yummiest) beverages you can drink. My sister and I are planning a trip tomorrow morning just to have another cup of this wonderful concoction.
For dessert? Try the bread pudding. They had two offerings: cinnamon and plain. I tried the plain and it tasted incredible; I can honestly say it was the BEST bread pudding I have ever tasted in my meager existence. Please please PLEASE don't skip this wonderful treat when you drop by.
Thanks to The Back Door Bakery, Sunland is finally cool. -

La Crescenta-Montrose, CA
This place is the type of place that takes the time to Make everything from scratch, you know the way we all should. The vanilla they use for there iced coffee is a pitcher of vanilla beans an simple syrup. Today I had a a really simple cheese sandwich with kalamata olives. It was really creamy and salty. I almost never eat vegetarian but it was really good.
The staff- Really friendly and helpful, and there are always tones of FREE SAMPLES
Truffles - they make jalapino, Rosemary, coconut, and orange. All are expertly made and a must try. I prefer the coconut
Parking is no problem and they have different art all the time. They are dog friendly and have dog treats right when you walk in.
@@@@@@ every Sunday from 2 to 4 they have ukulele lessons. -

Tujunga, CA
The sandwiches here are delicious. The jury is still out on the coffee. The first time I had it , MAN it was like an explosion of awesome coffee perfection. The second time sadly wasn't the same experience. It had a slight floral tea flavor. Im not sure if someone brewed tea in the coffee pot or if that was just the flavor of the coffee. it wasn't my "cup of tea". The couple that own this place are very sweet people. I really like this place despite my coffee issue. It's not the cheapest place in town, but itsn't that one of the best things about it?! It's not Coco's and the quality shows!
I had to update my previous 4 stars to 5 stars, not only are the owners super sweet they are also on top of things. I received a response from Deborah (the owner) saying that since my review they now have a dedicated "tea" pot and the staff is more careful to rinse the brew basket after brewing the tea.
They are extremely dedicated to making sure any problems are handled promptly and correctly. It's this kind of dedication that most businesses lack nowadays. They truly take pride in their work. -

This is a QUALITY bakery/pastry/sandwich shop. Everything from scratch means the taste is out of this world. One look at the bread when you walk in is enough to tell me I don't need to drive to Berolinas anymore. And they are super friendly to boot. Love this place!

My husband discovered this great bakery last week while waiting for his chicken kabob to be prepared next door. He came home with box of pastry delights. He was raving about the relaxed atmosphere and the extremely charming owners Reno and Deborah.
He went back every day last week, picking up a ham and cheese croissant for me, and a bacon and egg croissant for himself along with lattes, and which ever pastries tickled his fancy. I've been searching for the perfect ham and cheese croissant for years, and I'm very grateful that the search is over. All of the pastries have been heavenly.
We took our niece there for a birthday breakfast this past Saturday. That is when I discovered that they make breakfast plates too, not just baked goods. My husband and I shared the perfect omelet with the best hash browns I have ever tasted. They have an addictive quality to them. Deborah has a magic touch when it comes to cooking.
Deborah is very engaging and took the time out of her busy day to chat with us about the meaning of the name, and how she began the business. It was in talking with her that I discovered that every Sunday from 2-4 and ukulele player engages whomever wishes into a breakout session. They even brings ukulele's for others to use. I am so excited about this fact!! I encourage everyone in Sunland to befriend this place as you will not be disappointed.
Could it be that change is a comin' to Sunland? It would be great to start a movement to wake up this "land of the living dead" as my husband calls it, and shine it up to the jewel it is intended to be.
Credit cards are accepted. Parking is free. The best way to get to the parking lot is to use Apperson- turn north on Newhome and it will plop you right into the parking lot--easy-breezy. -

I don't know what's then big deal with this place I was def not impressed. It's nice in there but it's tiny, you bump into people and the owner seemed like a dick. The cashier was super nice. I got some breakfast and the eggs where weird as their hashbrown. My hubby said their muffin was good. It's very pricey.

Breakfast at The Back Door Bakery is the ONLY thing that will have me up, dressed, and out the door before 9:00 am on a Sunday morning! I found them through their Facebook ad last year and immediately dragged my husband there for lunch. They eventually added breakfast and I wonder if dinner is in the future? Everything they make is AMAZING, DELICIOUS, AWESOME and more! The owners and employees are extremely friendly. Back to the breakfast though...the potatoes are from another world. The giant fruit filled pancake takes pancakes to another level. This ain't yo mama's pancake! I don't really care for scrambled eggs and yet they are fluffy yellow clouds of heaven here! How do they do that? The pastries are beyond belief. I cannot say enough about this place! Oh, I almost forgot the sandwiches...yep, pretty darn good too!

Tujunga, CA
Had a pleasant morning there eating some of there good food and grading papers, here is what I noticed:
Positives:
+Good food. Had a Swiss and mushroom croissant which had crisp flaky layers and great flavor, I look forward to trying their other savory croissants in the future. The pear tart I also had was tasty as well, with a nice texture to the crust and filling. The iced tea had a slight fruit flavor to it. Didn't try any of the breakfasts, but some other people did and they looked very tasty indeed.
+Lots of samples to try. Had a piece of brownie and lemon tart as well, the brownie had an unexpected texture;neither good nor bad. The lemon tart was tangy and sweet, certainly something to get next time.
+Service. Not super fast, but very friendly. Liza was friendly and helpful without hovering or being constantly present. I felt very comfortable hanging out and getting some work done. Everyone I talked to had great attitude and were welcoming.
+Free Wi-fi: Need to ask for the password, but no charge.
Negatives:
-Not much space. Not a lot of room to move around, hard to form a line for service. It has a nice "hole in the wall" feel to it. Don't bring a large group here, I only counted 10 chairs inside.
-Restroom. Clean, but need to walk through the kitchen to get to it, a little awkward.
-Hard to get to. The intersection that it sits at makes it very hard to get into the parking lot if you are coming west on Foothill or to leave if you need to go west. I ended up going past it, then making a U-turn in a parking lot of a strip mall. It has a small and compact parking lot, but being Easter Sunday, wasn't hard to find a space.
Neutral:
*Prices: Not too high, not low enough to be called an amazing deal. A swiss and mushroom croissant, pear tart, iced tea (with refills), and a chocolate croissant for later came out to 15 bucks even not counting tip.
Another reviewer mentioned that it was cash only, this is not true, they take cards no problem. -

This is a hidden gem. Seek it out. Plenty of free parking in the lot shared by the Burrito Factory and the Chicken place.
Outstanding ham and cheese croissants, especially when they are fresh from the oven. Great coffee. Fresh made lemonade. Yummy pastries and breads. Loved the onion mini bagel and the greek salad. Friendly service.
Every Sunday at 2 pm there is a great Ukelele Jam. All levels are welcome, and the selection of songs were fun to sing and play along.
They are closed on Mondays and are not open for dinner. Make a point to stop by earlier in the day for great eats in Sunland. -

I've been putting off writing this review- but I can remain silent no longer.
CASH ONLY
For me, that's -1 star. Cash only is a pain. I hardly ever carry cash, and it means a special trip to an ATM, in addition to fees.
Closes at 6 pm
I work until 7. In Hollywood. You've just smashed my dream of a _real_ coffee house in Sunland. I want a place to get a good cup of coffee at 11 at night. I'm not taking a star off for this- because, lets face it, Sunland has it's issues. It has quite the transient homeless vagrant problem, and the reality of sitting at an outdoor cafe, unmolested, at 10 at night is a only a beautiful fantasy.
They're on the wrong side of the street. Let me explain. The Bakery's location is on the south side of the street. If I'm leaving Sunland, and headed to work (as I expect most traffic is in the morning) there's no easy, legal way to get into the shopping center the bakery is located within. I watched someone get ticketed this morning for making an illegal U-turn to get into the lot. It's really a shame.
I have no prior knowledge of the Back Door Bakery before it's appearance in Sunland- so my opinion is no colored by nostalgia for a previous Silverlake experience.
My Boyfriend was very excited to discover that the Back Door Bakery had appeared in Sunland. He spoke highly of scrumptious pastries, and good coffee. So, I went to check them out.
My first experience was so-so. Excellent service, truly unrushed (which is both good and bad). I had a strawberry croissant and a small fruit tart along with a latte. I took them to go, on my way to work. The strawberries in both the tart and the croissant had a weird chemical flavor to them. I figured it was a fluke of a few not-so-good strawberries. The latte was good, but not excellent.
My second experience was better. The latte was still good, but not excellent. However, I got a savory croissant- egg cheese and bacon. That's where the paydirt is at this Bakery for me. I feel they do excellent savory pastries. I feel like their croissants are heavier than the ones I miss from my time in France, so they don't fulfill that itch for me, and their sweet pastries are a bit too sweet for me. If you are used to European pastries, you might feel similarly.
I'm looking forward to trying their bread. . . -

discovered this place on accident and ended really liking this little bakery/coffeeshop! the man behind the counter was extremely friendly and helpful.
this place is really inexpensive and should only be considered a '$' place instead of '$$'.
they also have little samples of some of their pastries/tarts and breads! and who doesn't love samples :D
a good-sized iced coffee was only $2 and the coffee was very flavorful and strong, just the way i like it (: . Me and my friend also tried their Lemon Tart and it tasted really fresh; the lemon filling was just the right sourness and sweetness and the tart's crust was SO DELICIOUS. i would definitely recommend giving that a try. -

We are so lucky to have The Back Door Bakery in Sunland-Tujunga! Finally, a cafe that serves wonderful fresh food and great coffee!! With a friendly atmosphere and clean establishment.

I never knew a strawberry filled croissant could taste this good! It is heavenly. So far, everything we've tried from the Jalapeno Cheddar baguette to the lattes to to cookies I picked up for a last minute dinner party have been out of this world! It is clear that fresh ingredients are used every step of the way.
I moved to the area not long ago and was lamenting the fact that I couldn't get a decent latte anywhere. Problem solved now that Back Door Bakery is in town!
It's cash only, which is good to know, especially if you want to stock up on breads and goodies for the household, which you will. -

We love supporting new local businesses and we were excited to try this new bakery. Now that we have, we didn't really like it as much as we hoped to. The latte was good but didn't blow me away. There pastries were made with fresh ingredients and were good quality. The disappointment was the prices. We ordered 2 lattes, 1 croissant and an apple tart and the total was $20 not including tip. I would recommend this place if they could just lower their prices a little bit.

Lookout Sunland, there's a new dough sheriff in town! Want bread? Go here. Want croissants?Surely go here. Baguettes? Bagels? Tarts? Cappuccino? Yerba Mate' Latte'? Yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes, they have those. And they are all magically delicious.
In a crappy mood? Good g*d, what on earth are you waiting for??? Make HASTE and go here this very moment.
When you arrive you'll be greeted by one or all of the charming Goodale family members. They will treat you like relatives, the kind of relatives you see on t.v. where everyone is thoughtful and genuinely smiles and when they say "how are you?" they aren't looking for a "fine" - they *actually* want to know how you are. They're that kind of thoughtful.
We shared a lemon tart that was the heavenly balance of puckery mouthwatering tart and just sweet enough all perched upon the best shortbread this side of nirvana, and a spinach and swiss croissant that was nothing short of mindblowing. I'm not kidding. Topped off with fresh squeezed oj and tea. Ooooh la la. Happiness.
In summary: Go here. Everything is real. Everyone is cool. Buy a hat there and you'll be kinda cool too. Seriously.
Best of luck to you, BDB! We'll be back again and again.

Finally! Decent pastries and coffee in Sunland. That's dangerous, considering I only live about a mile away. On the plus side, I can walk there, which expends at least a few calories before I ingest even more delicious calories. I've been there twice now, and both times it was heavenly.
I love their savory croissants, and can speak to the tastiness of the bacon and egg croissant, as well as the egg and cheese croissant. I wasn't as impressed by their brioche, which to my tastebuds wasn't quite buttery and flaky enough. Yet their almond orange croissant more than makes up for it, as does the fudge brownie I sampled. My friend swears by their bread pudding, and another friend thoroughly enjoyed her lemon bar.
They make a good cappuccino, which is a wonderful thing in a neighborhood where Starbucks is the only coffee place. (And trust me, I'd rather drink McDonald's coffee than Starbucks.)
The service is friendly and helpful.
If you find yourself in Sunland, drop on in. -

Yayy Back Door Bakery! Reno and Deborah are saving us out here in the wilds of Sun Valley with their delicious rich breads, fantastic pastries and friendly smiles. I had a pain au chocolat this morning with more chocolat in it than in any croissants I ate in Paris. Their day-old bread makes terrific french toast. And their savory pastries are as good as a sandwich. Delicious coffee as well and they'll ice it for you, which is key during the summer heat!

Update: They're open! And it's better than I remembered. The neighbors here are going nuts. Welcome back, fat waistline!
If you spent any time in Silver Lake several years ago, you will probably remember their fantastic croissants, fudge cake, sandwiches, oatmeal, brioches, fruit pancakes and home-made Hostess cupcakes. Remember that wonderfully strong coffee? How about the home-made ketchup, salsa and garlic mayo? Fully-loaded quesadillas and salads? Custard-y French Toast? Egg sandwich with cheese and caramelized onions? Tender, perfect danishes and veggie muffins? I am now remembering why I got fat when I lived down there, even though I walked around the reservoir once a day.
I know they are planning to add new dishes to the menu soon, so I will update some of the details then.
For locals, you can find this place pretty easily as it shares the lot with Sis Chicken and the Burrito Factory, across the street from Sunland Park.
Trust me on this one, Back Door Bakery will be your new happy-fix! -

So excited to hear Sunland had a yummy local bakery/cafe! The place is a tiny one but it has a great ambiance. There are local artists' work on the walls, tables inside and out, and old time music setting the mood. Back Door Bakery now takes credit/debit cards now as well! If you call a day or two ahead of time you can put in an order for a fresh loaf of bread or a cake. :) The owner was genuine and took the time to explain all the breads, pastries, and delectable desserts they had to offer. I ended up leaving with a piece of their chocolate mousse cake, garlic potato bread, and a small latte. The wife of the owner is the one who makes everything in the bakery and she does a great job! The cake was soooo yummy. The garlic potato bread is definitely for garlic lovers. It had powerful flavors, in a great way. And the latte was strong. Paired with the cake it was perfection. I would recommend this lovely little place to all fellow Sunland-ers. Hope to see you there!

It's just a fabulous little bakery, a gem tucked away in Sunland. Everything looked amazing, I only had the chance to try the ham croissant, spinach and swiss croissant, and plain croissant. All were delish...make sure to ask for them warmed. The fresh squeezed orange juice was a wonderful accompaniment to the pastries. I will be back soon, to try the baguettes and sticky buns next. The decor and vibe are modern but very family friendly. Unfortunately there isn't much space to linger for long...I see them outgrowing this location or expanding quickly. They are not yet accepting credit cards but have plans to in the near future.
