6 reviews for The Atomic Cafe
A Lexington must-see!
This place is always fun and friendly! Their menu is full of Caribbean-styled food and lots and lots of drink specials!! Though I am a vegetarian, there are tons of options for me on the menu, but I always stick with the same dish: the one and only Tiki Salad. This dish is monstrous! It comes with black beans, homemade corm bread, hearts of palm, melon, pineapple, cottage cheese, tomatoes, peppers, and the best part -- Coconut dressing! Seriously, I always leave with a tummy ache cause I eat it ALL! DELICIOUS!
Make sure you sit in the back patio during the spring/summer -- nice, sophisticated spot for UK as Transy students or for a date with live music and a semi-bar scene.
Hooray for Atomic Cafe!!
If you're an alcoholic clinging desperately to your youth, the Atomic Cafe is the place for you. That's not to say that no one else is going to enjoy themselves here, they just won't enjoy themselves quite as much. The Atomic Cafe is a unique beast. It's loud and crowded, but those qualities lack the same sense of charm they create in the dive bars. The food is decent and the Caribbean-themed decor is fun enough, but there's nothing authentic about this place. If you wank next door to Third Street Stuff & Coffee, you'll be treated to an ironic atmosphere that doesn't take itself too seriously. The Atomic Cafe, on the other hand, takes itself a little too seriously and the only way you will if you've had a few too many fruity drinks.
I hate restaurants that make me feel like I have to get drunk just to relax. There's something to be said for an environment that puts you at ease, making you say to yourself "I could totally get drunk here." And if you're not 21, forget it. You can eat here, but be prepared to be miserable. If you've ever been to the Caribbean and you're looking for something to "take you back" you will be disappointed. The Atomic Cafe deserves some credit for what it is, but that's not much.
I went here one night for drinks, I definitely did NOT like the atmosphere. It was practically empty on a Saturday night last May...I can't really say anything about the food...So if you're looking for that-disregard my review! I have heard the food is good though...
This was a fun, loud, place to hang out in, but they were definitely not ready for our group of 15, in an already nearly full restaurant. However, we were served drinks promptly, and eventually I received my conch fritters, which I could have eaten all night. They were good, but slightly overdone. The Jerk Chicken, however, was anything but. It was a grilled chicken breast with jerk sauce poured on it. As my compatriot, who happens to be from Trinidad stated "This is *not* Jerk Chicken. I don't know what it is, but Jerk Chicken it isn't."
The choice of local beers was pretty good, and I afforded myself several.
Food is ok. Best part is that it's something different, but I never really go back just to eat. What is great about Atomic cafe is the outside patio area. Great place on a warm night especially when they have live music. Seen some awesome reggae bands here. Nice break from the standard bar hangout great place to meet friends and spend an evening.
i used to work here, so i guess i'm a bit partial to the food...
i'm totally addicted to their mac and cheese, which i like to eat with a side of the hot peanut sauce (believe me, its amazing). i also love the fish fritters, which i also eat with the hot peanut sauce...the bikini salad is the best with the orange sesame dressing (a bed of mixed greens, lots of fresh fruits, hearts of palm and sunflower seeds), and the coconut shrimp with the orange cocktail sauce is awesome (but it's kinda hard to do coconut shrimp wrong, right?). oh, most everyone gets a basket of the sweet potato chips, which are all hand cut! and speaking of, all of the sauces, dressings, and salsas are made in-house.
the patio can be perfect on a summer evening...until it gets super crowded. thursday, friday, and saturday are typically filled with the upper crust of the fraternity scene, all returning back to the neighborhood of their private school (Sayre). it's usually a better scene than say, The Rosebud, but its still full of the typical douches downing Bud Lights.
the specialty drinks (Goombay Smashes!) will put you in the tropical mood, but dont plan on doing anything the next day, cause they'll knock you out.
be nice to the waitresses, that place is a zoo in the summer.
