If you come here you probably know that you will consume at least 2000 calories. The fish & chips are great & better than any place I've had fish & chips in NYC. The fish are cooked perfectly and they don't taste or feel oily. The fried mac & cheese was great too. I suggest coming with a group of people & sharing so you can try things without have to devour all those calories
I looooooooooove the fried Twinkie. I'm not a huge fan of Twinkies in their regular form, but the fried ones here are a must try.
The waitress was very nice when when my friend & I asked for fried oreos. She said they didn't have any, but we could leave to go to the corner store & they would fry a portion (about 4 or 5 cookies) for somewhere around $2.50 (I can't remember the exact price).
Oh My F'n God.
First and foremost the fish and chips are authentic, quality and reasonably priced.
We saw the Chip Shop on the Travel Channel so I plugged it into my GPS for our vacation to NYC.
I know fish and chips. Yes I'm English but my qualifications are unique. I hung out in the best fish & chips shop in the west for 20+ years. The Chip Shop blows them out of the water.
The Chip Shop meets all the criteria for for class A Fish & chips.
1. Great Home Made Batter
2. Quality White Fish (Dover Sole?)
3. Homemade Chips
4. All Cooked To Perfection
All this at a VERY VERY reasonable price.
And they had Newcastle on tap along with 30+ other varieties.
Now the icing on the twinkie. OMG Deep fried F'n EVERYTHING! Cheescake, snickers, cherry pie, Reeses Peanut Butter Cup (Oh My), Mars Bar, Pizza, Mac N Cheese, oh oh oh my GOD!!!!!! And we sampled it all. My fav was the Reeses but it was all fantastic.
Thank you SO MUCH Chris
F 'n Brilliant, A Bit Hard To Understand?!!
British waitress: Hello, are you ready?
Me: I'll have the haddock & chips please.
BFF I'll have cod & chips.
Waitress: Would you like curry sauce?
We both: What? (music way too loud)
BFF: Answered for us No, thank you.
I asked BFF what did she say? She asked if we wanted Tarter sauce.
Me: That's weird. I thought she said Curry sauce.
Been before for lunch and the fare is great but for a F 'n brilliant time go at night.... that's when the food, music, atmosphere, pints and at times a bit hard to understand...
Order the haddock & chips you'll get two hefty pieces! $12.75
Order the cod & chips you'll get one piece? $12
I can't really differentiate between haddock and cod. But an ex-Brit BF always went for haddock. Which, I now adapt to... Grab the vinegar bottle and douce this over your plate but just enough as you go. The batter is shatteringly crisp, golden and once you break through there is a constant steam waving about. Dash on the vinegar again and eat some chips. Repeat these steps and sip your beer in between, and the waitress checks on you to see if you need another pint. Portions are HUGE ---Oh, my arteries are hating me right now.
When you're done and can't possibly eat one more bite ... she comes by and ask if we wanted dessert?
Me: What do you have as a special?
Waitress: Owe, we have Cherry Pie.
Me: Uhhh, okay. But for takeaway pls.
Out came four triangular pcs sprinkled with confectionary sugar, cherry filing AND Deep Fried. Ouch!!! Again, my poor poor arteries. I thought this an American cheery pie. Somehow, I forgot everything here is FRIED ------- Okay, if you somehow know & enjoy MacDonald's cherry pie then this is for you.... This is the best tasting fish & chip shop in our borough. I prefer this one to A Salt N Battery for a pub vibe :)
Note To All: They offer Curry Sauce, so I was correct!!! A nod from the Indian cuisine influence.
So Far we had the Fried Macroni and cheese, the deep fried burger, twinky, twix and reeses peanut butter cup! All I can say is We love this place and can't wait to try some more food off the menu! Thanks for the travel channel!
Corr blimey. If only I had found this joint sooner. This place is legit... from the selection of beer, to the way the beer is poured, to the temperature variance of different beers, to the food. The bartender working that night was cool too, and didn't glare at me when I doused my Shepherd's Pie with Tabasco sauce. I had a bite of the fish and chips my friend had and the fish was rock solid. And it was huge.... ha, that's what she said.
If I wasn't trying to avoid heart disease, I would have eaten the fried Twinkies or Snickers. But I'll leave that to other fatasses to comment on. I'm content with getting more pie and beer, thanks. Definitely going here again.
I'll miss ye ol chipshop.
During my last week as a resident of Atlantic Ave, the divide between BK Heights and Cobble Hill, there were a couple places I had to eat at before saying goodbye. ChipShop was one. My usual, the chicken and mushroom pie (no chips, because surely potpie without chips is healthy, like tofu and brown rice) which comes in a cream of mushroom-like sauce.
On this occasion, my friend and I both ordered the haddock and chips. Our salty waitress recommended curry for our chips. The meal started with a pint of creamy, frothy old speckled hen. Adult milkshake, commented my friend. Our huge battered fishes arrived, both looked like they were leaping off the plate and must have been a foot long. It comes with all the fixin's: tartar sauce, lemon, vinegar.
I was stuffed but looked on enviously as our neighboring table got their fried reese's peanut butter cups.
hey what can i say fried food ...thats all i almost had a heart attack but the beer saved my life althou it had more head than an L.A hooker shit ... the pie was salty as fuckith wtf... the chips was brown and soggy !!! the chicken strips had a slight pink to them lol they had a bad day i guess...
I got horribly lost trying to come here. I spent 20 minutes sadly wandering the streets, alone and despairing of ever tasting the delicious beers and deep-fried-everything I'd been promised. Luckily, the world becomes more like "who want's to be a millionaire" everyday and I was able to phone a friend with an iphone and more common sense then I. "None of these streets are numbers!" I wailed in desperation. But cooler heads prevailed. A ten minute walk and a Trader Joe's spotting later and I was being seated in the quirkily decorated interior of ChipShop.
Deep Fried Pizza for $3.50 tastes a lot like those elio's pizza rolls things that you buy in college from the 7-11 cause you're poor and drunk and forgot to grocery shop. I guess it's marginally better then that, but I would have dug some sort of dipping sauce.
Now, speaking of dipping sauce, the curry dipping sauce that you can get with the "chips" here is pretty much one of the most delicious things I've ever put in my mouth. Next time I come in I'm just ordering "chips" and deep fried candy. I mean why not? It's not like anything you get here is going to be healthy.
Another place ChipShop shines is their outstanding beer list. With 16 beers on tap it's pretty easy to find something up your alley. I got some crazy $4 half-pint of something that was 10% (and delicious!) followed up by a double IPA from Milford, NH that I had to order cause, like, that's near where I used to live. It was also quite nice. Needless to say, after such high-octane beers I was grateful for the pile of fried in my stomach. I wish I could remember either of the beer's names. Guess I'll just have to go back. Right after I hit the gym about 10 more times to make up for this last trip.
Goodbye arteries. Delicious cod made exactly like the UK. Had the cod and it was a massive serving of fish. The fried mac and cheese was my favorite as well as their fried reeses. Heavy comfort food but don't know how often I could eat here
The bartender is super nice!!! Definitely coming back here for the really good fried food--more specifically the fried mac n' cheese and....
THE TWICE FRIED CHERRY PIE.
If you're like me and obsessed with donuts, you'd think you died and gone to fried pastry heaven when you eat the cherry pie. It blows all desserts away. I'm going back just to get 3 servings of this cherry pie....by myself.
(Oh yeah, the fish and chips are good too.)
I pride myself in being able to choose the right dish at restaurants... I feel like I usually order something that I really end up enjoying. Unfortunately, there are times that I miss. I think this was one of those times.
Four of us decided to try this place out after first going to Buttermilk Channel and learning there would be an hour to an hour and a half wait for a table. we ended up ordering...
Haddock and chips, Grilled chicken salad, Shepard's Pie and a Mac & Cheese.
I think the highlights for us were the Shepard's pie, the mac & cheese and the peas that came with the shepard's pie.
The portions were huge and overall they were good. Maybe I was having an off night. My taste buds were not ready for the curve ball after expecting something of the menu at Buttermilk. I'm not sure what happened.
Good service, large portions, good selection of British beers... it would have been a good night any other time, just not that day. :(
brings back memories of the fish and chips in London, which arguably has the best fish n chips in town.
This is the perfect place to have a beer and watch a soccer game.
Must eats:
1) Fish and chips( huge portion)
2) Baked Cauliflower ( if you like cauliflower trust me you will love it !)
3) Ribena ( blackcurrent drink i grew up drinking)
NOTE: Try not to get it TO-GO bcuz they just wrap everything in a giant sheet of paper and oil started leaking out after a while. Would have appreciated it if they could spare a box or sth.
Hands down, this is the best place for fish n' chips. Ok, granted I haven't yet been to A Salt and Battery, but so far Atlantic Chipshop is topping the list. The fish was fresh, light, flaky, and battered quite well. It wasn't even that greasy, either. I expected it to be soaking in oil, but i was wrong. The chips were amazing-- probably one of the best fries I have ever eaten. But before I even dug into my fish n' chips, we ordered the fried pizza. It sounds gross, but don't knock it until you try it. It is really good. You can still taste the 'pizza' but it has a fried, outer crust of batter that just makes an ordinary slice better. Love this place, even though I've been here just once-- wish I lived closer.
Yes, literally everything is fried, and it sounds gross, but it's So good. We started (and shared) with the Fried Macaroni and Cheese, never tasted anything as good as this, and I'd get it again as my own dish and Not share it. We then got the haddock and cod, the haddock tastes very good. The vinegar on the table should be tried with the chips (a.k.a fries) although it's not a taste we're comfortable with at first, it actually does taste good (not better than ketchup).
As full as we were, it is just a rule we cannot leave without trying a dessert. Sure enough, we tried a fried twinkie and the berry dish.
Salads the next day and the day after are the best way to detox from this sinful experience.
I love it. I will definitely be back to this place. We had a great dinner here when we walked over to Brooklyn. The atmosphere is awesome and the wait staff is extremely helpful and friendly. The beer selection here was great. They had a beer that had chocolate in it that was so smooth...I still can't believe it was beer.
The fish & chips were great. I ordered the cod.
We decided to be ambitious and try the fried twinkie for dessert. The waiter told us they also have a fried reeses and a fried snickers to choose from. When he saw our look of confusion as to which to try, he suggested the "Trifecta of death" and brought out all 3. Never having tried a fried dessert....it was really interesting. The twinkie so did not taste like what I thought it would taste like. It was good! Twinkies suck normally!
The fried reeses was good, but the fried snickers was just weird.
All in all, this was a great evening spent at the chip shop. Great fish & chips, great service, great beer, and great dessert. I'll definitely be visiting this place again.
The food here really is as delicious and as heart attack-inducing as I imagined from perusing the menu online. I ordered bangers and mash and my boyfriend ordered steak and onion pie and chips, leaving both of us in a stuffed state of bliss. I'm glad, though, that we persisted on in trying the fried desserts. The fried Twix covered with powdered sugar and served so warm the melted filling dribbles out when you break a piece off them can't be missed. I will definitely be back for more desserts to hasten the onset of my eventual coronary.
The atmosphere is very laid-back and the place wasn't too crowded. Vintage Dr. Who posters ( :D ) hang across from prints of Siouxsie Sioux in a way that manages to be evocative but not diner-style tacky.
Extra bonus: the bathroom walls are a collage of Daily Mail clippings, offbeat humor pieces, and other such goodies. One could easily hog the bathroom for half an hour reading everything.
I've eaten at this location more recently. I had the same thing I had at the Park Slope Chip Shop (Haddock and Chips) though this time I tried the fried Twinkies. I expected two Twinkies not one, but the raspberry sauce was awesome.
There seems to be a bit more seating room at this location and they have a full bar, but no blender so you're good for cocktails that don't require crushed ice.
Like the other location I rate this place with 5 stars. However for a slightly different reason. The location gains a 6th star for having a full bar (for those that drink) and looses one for the piss poor parking situation. That can't be helped though. The parking is just as bad in Park Slope anyway.
Either way this is a place you MUST eat at. Yum!
Awesomely fresh battered cod & chips. The portion was huge. The decor is very English and old. I am coming back to try fried pizza next time!
Excellent. After a nice ride from 42nd street across the Brooklyn Bridge our appetites were strong and a pint of Belhaven to wash down a good sized portion of haddock and chips was perfect. Really good crispy beer batter on a good sized piece of fresh haddock and good potato chips, not reconstituted potato bits.
A good sized venue with seating for upto 40 comfortably. An excellent British menu and beer menu to match, they also serve wine, makes this place a definite return destination.
A chip shop that's not good with chips is a kind of, like, paradox or something.
The deep fried mac and cheese is, however, unspeakably toothsome, a la the giant man-eating centipedes of Interzone. Akin to making your liver smoke a carton of cigarettes, i.e. full of flavor.
The cod gets a thumbs up but the chicken fingers are so good they don't need thumbs.
I have a friend who's determined to eat healthy.
The problem is that he's such a gracious guy, he's always deferring to me when we're trying to decide where to go have lunch.
Yesterday, when he probably would have wanted to eat frisee salad with a walnut vinaigrette, here we were at the Chip Shop -- he was eating the *healthy* option, wild mushroom shepherd's pie (very British-looking with nary a fresh vegetable in sight).
I had the cod and chips, which were great. Light (well, anyway, light as deep fried fish can be -- they can, I think, bake the fish for you,too...but I personally wouldn't go for that), with an enormous mound of distinctly-English fries, not crispy, but tender and just the right foil for malt vinegar.
To me, this location, on Atlantic Ave. in Cobble Hill, is almost the ideal place to stop for a break in the middle of a beautiful fall afternoon, which it was yesterday. Almost empty at noon, by 1:00 locals were beginning to fill up the place.
Friendly staff, and the stout is as strong and dark as coffee.
my friends told me that i had to try the Chip Shop i was like hmmm i dont know.. fried twinkies and fried mac/cheese..i said ahh what the the heck i`l give it a try..i am very happy i did food was great i tried the fried mac and cheese and the fried twinkie and i samples one of my buddys fried pizza it was all very good besides the place being a little to small i had a very good time waitress was very nice and spoke with a british accent which i loved..over all a nice place good food and if you want a nice beer they have that as well..i will be back with my wife i`m sure she will love it..
This place is heaven. As long as your version of heaven is like mine and includes fried food, beer and Shepherd's pie. Yum.
There's not a lot to say about it: the food is delicious and feels so wrong it must be right, it's a good place for a group of friends. And my goal is to one day try everything on the menu.
I got deep fried pizza, fried macaroni an fish & chips when I went (I split the entire thing with another person and we both had plenty). The food was delicious and the right amount of greasy and cheesy. There's also a lot of deep fried chocolate and a bunch of English dishes which I just love. I can't wait to go back and get some English breakfast. Mmm.
fried pizza mmmm.
the place makes good food and serves good beer. what else do you want?
Authentic according my English friends who took me there. Come with an empty stomach.
I had fried sausage - batter was delish - with chips. Yum. Yum. Yum.
One drawback - not-so-friendly service. Waitress didn't smile once. There was barely an acknowledgement when we entered the place, but the food absolutely made up for it.
I would definitely go back. Must try fried Snickers Bar next time.
i used to have this boy i'd hang around** with and he lived right near the chip shop. he was very easy on the eyes and i think he had a hook-up at chip shop (not that kind of hook-up...he was mine!) and we ate here all the time. nothing tops a romp better than fattening and delicious food. this place is five stars for the memories, the eclectic menu, and the food. it's damn good.
i have tried and loved:
deep fried & battered cod & chips
jumbo fat sausage & chips
cheddar cheese & onion croquettes with chips
mashed potatoes and delicious gravy
amazing potato salad
beefy shephards pie
really great lamb & vegetable stew
mac & cheese w/ Myer's sausage (hold the peas, please!)
sausage beans & chips
carmalized onion mashed potatoes with delicious gravy
fried macaroni
baked beans
seafood chowder
welsh rarebit
fish sandwich & chips
deep fried twinkies
deep friend snickers
ginger beer
deep fried banana
apple & blackberry crumble with custard
fucking off the chain rhubarb crumble with custard
twice fried cherry pie
rice pudding
i need to get back here soon for the fish sandwich, ginger beer and deep fried twinkies. soon.
**i doubt you're reading this but holla at your girl. you know who you are.
Okay so I used to live above this little place.
It moved in below, shortly after we did. It took us awhile to actually go inside and check it out because 'Chip Shop' didn't quite fit in while with our little BHeights environment next to our fave watering hole Floyds. But one day the bf decided to grab something before he headed to work and shortly there after I received a phone call saying I must run downstair at my earliest convenience and try out the fried snickers. I was fore-warned however, that I should plan on not going anywhere soon after because I would be doused with a double dose of chocolate comatose.
So because I am a good girl, I followed instructions and did as I was told. I entered this cute little bar looking place, empty at this time of day (2pm) skimped over the menu and told the guy I wanted a fried snicker. Five minutes later I slithered back upstairs to enjoy this little piece of forbidden fruit. Two hours later when I woke up .. nah just kidding. But I did FEEL like passing out after this rich gooey goodness filled my belly. I soon thereafter became a devote fan, endulging one, two, three times monthly (thats alot when you think of how many calories this thing packs).
The only other thing I tried was the actually fish and chips...and to be honest...wasnt impressed (but neither was I when I had the fish and chips in London- eelk they were) but the fried snickers....yoh my dear....you have lived till you've had one.
4*er= me go back one day to face fried snickers once again.
My friend and I studied abroad in London back in 2006, so we found it necessary to invade the chip shop for a serious need of nostalgia.
The place is filled with posters and newspapers and nearly everything possible that has to do with the UK, our server, also the bartender, was a Scotsman himself (and nice to boot.)
My friend decided to go for the classic (and huge) fried cod and chips with a side of tartare sauce. Based on her facial reactions, I could tell she loved it. When I dove in for a bite, I was pleased by the lack of oiliness, the fish-to-batter ratio (high) and the delicious flavor that escaped from the crispy coating itself.
I decided to go for the vegetable shepherd's pie because I figured that'd be "healthy," but it still managed to measure up to the traditional lamb filling. Bubbling hot, its potato "crust" was smooth and delightful. My one complaint would be the peas, which would have cost me an extra $3 to be mushy, the way they should be.
I decided to have ginger beer with my order; it looked very much like Fresca with a bite stronger than any Ginger Ale. Still, there was something oddly flat about it, so I lost interest.
For your pleasure, there is also haggis on the menu, which is curiously deep-fried. When abroad, haggis ended up being one of the best things I had ever eaten, but it was boiled, as it should be.
I'm more interested in Chip Shop's classic British desserts than anything else, but perhaps one day (after a week of fasting,) I'll order a deep-fried Reese's Peanut Butter Cup; it sounds unbelievable.
This ChipShop serves the same deep fried fare that sends you convulsing in fits of delight (or is that the screaming pulse of your overworked arteries?), although the vegetable samosas are suspiciously absent from the menu. The space is about double the size of the Park Slope location, which wins points; you can actually fit a group here. The front section is also a proper bar (decently populated at Friday happy hour) that serves up your favorite UK bottles, taps and even cask ale (see selection on ChipShop's website - Atlantic Blog). I partook only in hard cider, with a Deep Fried Twinkie to line my innards. It's good, but I'm still partial to the Deep Fried Twix, it of explosive chocolate + cookie + caramel glory. Also sampled the rhubard crumble w/ custard (meh in flavor, gah in consistency) and the Fried Macaroni (do it now!). (4.5 deep fried stars)
Upon entering The Chip Shop we were greeted by.......no one......and aimless stares, even though my girlfriend and I looked as lost and clueless as tourists being scammed by a bootleg purse salesman. After finally realizing to just sit ourself in this crowded, incredibly dark bar/British themed restaurant there was like 10,000 menus and promotional items that the waitress brought us (maybe it was because we came during the beer festival).
We ordered the Fried Macaroni and Cheese and the Fish and Chips. The macaroni was not very cheesy, but the fried goodness around it made it taste like a macaroni funnel cake. The Fish was delicious, the chips were delicious, and the tarter sauce was.....delicious! We ordered Fried Reeses and Fried Snickers for dessert which were RIDICULOUS and if it wasn't so unhealthy we would have ordered seconds!
The only reason The ChipShop gets 4 stars is lack of service. The food is EXCELLENT
We will definitely be returning to the Chip Shop very soon!
The chips topped with cheese and gravy won me over / made me fat.

Yummm.
I got your standard fish and chips and some kind of beer the waitress recommended.
The beer was smother than any I have had before, in fact it kind of had the consistency of melted ice cream. The tarter sauce was great. I really love fish and chips and I eat them maybe once every other month despite the stomach aches all the grease gives me. So you can imagine how elated I was that my tum tum was in perfect working order when I left.
Our waitress was really nice and helpful although not that attentive. Then this other guy who I'm guessing was the manager brought us our bill and addressed me by my name and then proceeded to go on a 5-7 minute rant about some girl who works theres name being Risa, how great she was, she writes jingles for something or another (it got to be a bit over kill).
All the posters and music added to the ambiance, rockers vs. mods.
I'll be back!
Had some beers and tried a fried mac and cheese - pretty good.
Smells like a bar and the service was friendly.
They have 20% off drinks during their happy hour till 7pm.
yeah this is my first review. this place is that good that it motivated me to put a review on a (apparently) social networking/restaurant review site.. i've had fish and chips all over, some good, some not so good..this place does it right...good portions, fish is nice and crispy on the outside, flaky and good on the inside. and the chips are great. not sure about the rest of the menu, but the f&c here hasnt really been topped, at least on this side of the pond...
As an avowed anglophile and devoted follower of all things cheesy and deep fried, I am very much in love with this place. For the traditionalist, the British comfort food staples like shepherd's pie, scotch eggs, and fish & chips are excellent. But for those that want to be a bit more adventurous with their dietary indiscretions, the fried mac n' cheese and fried candy bars are also quite tasty. My favorite thing here is actually their deep fried pizza (which is every bit as delicious and coronary-inducing as it sounds). And even if you just want have a pint of bitter while rocking out to old-school Jam and Smiths records, this is the place.
I really like this place, definitely the best fish & chips I've had since England. The beer selection is good though you may need some help when choosing, which our waiter was more than happy to do. The atmosphere is cool, kind of bar style with some tables on the side and in the back. You should really give this place a try if you want some good fish & chips in a laid back atmosphere.
My mouth waters a bit just thinking about the Chip Shop. I often take the subway out to Brooklyn just to have dinner here. Having spent four months in London, I know what a good plate of good fish and chips is, and this is it.
I really like the decorations-a little funky but nothing too outrageous. I've never had a problem with the staff, either. Generally, expect to wait, but never longer than 20-25 minutes. The entire restaurant is basically a homage to Great Britain, so how can you not love it? The fried cod or fried haddock with chips never fail me. The beer selection is wide as well. Don't forget to finish off your meal with fried snickers!
When I hear "English pub food" after a night of drinking, my appetite does not usually scream for a dry banger, bland soupy beans, and some version of fried eggs. Chip Shop was NOT any of this. It has a a Full English breakfast, but it was neither dry, bland, nor non-descript. But to come here, it is highly recommended that you try any dish that actually comes with chips. They were thick cut, crispy, and served with a bottle of malt vinegar.
I ordered the Battered Cod and Chips, and it was just what my headache and stomachache needed. The cod came out crisp and not greasy, on a bed of hot, savory chips. I made the mistake of squeezing the whole slice of lemon onto the cod, and the batter became a bit soggy towards the end. The flesh was flavorful and flaky; it was tasty cod. The chips did not disappoint. Piping hot right out of the oil, they were dry to the touch, and soaked up the wonderful flavor of the malt vinegar. I'm all about dips and sauces, so I fully utilized the tartar sauce for the cod, and the ketchup on the chips as well.
We sat at the bar, and were entertained by the Brooklyn-bred bartender who, as it turns out, grew up only a few blocks away from my childhood home. He let us taste the draughts before we settled on a pint, and thankfully warned all the females of the Blackberry/Lime flavored trickery. I had the O'Hara's Irish Red ale that was slightly sweet, and not too heavy.
The TVs played football, as it is known to the rest of the world (Man U vs. Liverpool), and football football (Michigan State vs. um....some other team). Families sat at the tables toward the back of the bar, and babies and toddlers were well accommodated with high chairs and the friendly waitstaff.
I barely heard about this place a week ago and decided to try it out. I was expecting a fast food chip place for some reason and was pleasantly surprised that it was really nice.
The food was a little pricey but worth it. The chips and baked macaroni and cheese were fantastic. The fish was OK, I have had better.
I will definitely be going back to this place for some more food. Also, I am a avid salad lover, unlike most, but their granny smith salad looked really yummy. That will be on my list of things I am going to try there.
My friend tried the ginger beer. I had a sip and it was tasted pretty good. I would recommend at least trying it.
I love the Atlantic Chip Shop--it has great food, good staff and a wonderful ambiance.
