For some reason most people seemed surprised to hear that I had never been to the Eagle. Sure, it's a gay bar, but I never found an occasion to visit until our UYE after the police raided them at the beginning of September. I'm always up for a good time and the leather scene doesn't scare me, so I'm sure I would have made it there eventually (although I'm glad I didn't wait any longer).
Even though we had a relatively small group you would have thought we were the only ones there because everyone was amazingly nice and attentive. Chris L. was kind enough to give me the "grand tour" and I'll be glad to testify that I was unable to find the secret rooms that the APD described in some of their undercover reports, but I digress...
We ended up going on a night that they were having a special event to benefit the legal fund that has been established to defend the 8 employees that were arrested. I heard we helped raise over $300 (I doubt we can take full credit, although Leah F. and I really worked the dance floor).
A good time was had by all and we even made some new friends. Carrie Neal W. and I told one of the fundraiser planners we were from Yelp she said that she recently started using the Yelp iPhone app. That was just too cool for school. :)

I'm not gonna lie, I wasn't exactly looking forward to a trip to the Eagle. Not because I don't like the gays (quite the opposite, actually) but because I wasn't sure they'd like *us.* The only things I had heard about this place was that it was a spot for leather-wearers and bears to come together, and I wasn't a big fan of our mostly-straight and cotton wearing crew busting in on their fun. I thought it might kind of be a weird invasion of their privacy and comfort zone, or something.
Well, I stand very, very corrected, as I don't think I've ever been welcomed to a spot with such open arms, quite literally.
I was a little nervous as I came up the back steps while two guys gave me a quizzical look and just about shut the door in my face. But once I found my group, I was introduced to just about every employee in the place and I must say they were the friendliest, most inviting crew I've come across in a long time. Jello shots were passed around, giant and cheap gin and tonics were slugged down, and we laughed. A lot. The majority of other patrons were equally friendly, not at all minding our loud presence and inane questions.
I'll warn you now, this place is DARK to the point where it's a good bit disorienting at first, but hey, at least you don't need to worry about touching up your makeup.

Eagle-Virgin No More!!
Had such a good time last night - the Eagle definitely landed! David K. and I mosied on over a little earlier than planned, and were later joined by the fabulous http://LeahandMark.com duo, Empress Kathleen and Jason R. By the time everyone arrived, David and I had met some regulars - also there out in support of The Eagle, post-raid - and made friends with the nice bartender.
Cool spot, interesting people, totally fun and different for me on a Friday night . . . and there were jello shots!! What's not to love?
Long Live The Eagle.

I dont care what anybody says this place is totally appropriate for a date.
Yes its a leather bar and the music is always blasting. I dont think the gentlemen are not as welcoming as my boys over at Mary's but I won't hold that against them.
I'll go again on a Wednesday or Saturday.
Fun times, friendly folks! I am a new fan of The Eagle. In the course of one evening I: played pinball, got locked in a cage, tore up the dance floor, and learned secret meanings for colors. Oh, and contributed to a legal fund for those wrongly arrested in the raid. And gulped down some yummy jello shots. All in all, a fabulous night out.

The Eagle was wonderfully relaxed, laid-back, and fun last night. Perfect for a Friday wind-down after a nutso week. Strong drinks, friendly people, and plenty of space. I didn't know they had an area out back... Feels like a great place to hang out where people can just be.

I've only been here once, and that was with my friend Jenny who was Psych major at Emory and enrolled in some Addictions class or something like that. So we went to the Eagle to attend a lecture on S&M and sex toys.
Ok, ok, it was a *little* weird when Debbie the mullet-haired lesbian passed around some sex toys that "anyone can make with normal stuff bought at Home Depot." However, the icing on the cake is when they had an audience member (thankfully, not me) go in the back, and strap on some special electric underwear. Then this big guy with a sick smile on his face would send electric shocks to the other guy's balls.
It was disturbing (think Abu Ghraib) yet hysterical!

I like to go to the eagle when I want to be a little bad. It's a little sleezy, but that's what makes it charming. The only thing I really don't like is that it is cash only. The porch is great on a fall night.

Yes. I have been to the Eagle. I know what you are thinking, "but that's a leather bar!!!", and you know what, you would be right! I have to say, that for YEARS I was honestly terrified of places like the Eagle. You know, the "fringes of gay society" frequent there, and that makes those places "sketchy", right? WRONG. This place is actually very spacious inside, and has a large comfortable back patio. The dancefloor is a good size, and the bar is nice. The drinks are strong, and mine were served by a big shirtless man! The music was unexpectedly awesome, and the people were, well, all shapes and sizes!
It was honestly refreshing to be in a place where there were literally all kinds of people, and contrary to my past beliefs, not everyone was in leather and doing "naughty" things. I am sure that some of that stuff goes on there; but I didn't go to the back room, I am a good boy after all. Most of all, it was just a relaxed atmosphere with people of all shapes and sizes having a good time. There were several men clad in leather, and many bear-types and muscle types, but for the most part, that turned out to be eye candy. I say that if you have never been to Eagle, and have always thought it was a sketchy place, I think that it is all in the eye of the beholder. Don't let your preconceived notions stop you, if you are curious about a different side of gay culture. By checking out places like the Eagle, I have learned that not all gay boys are perfect and have dusty blond hair; MOST of them are just men who happen to be gay and want to be with other men! Interestingly enough, this is what many think of as the "fringe", when it is actually the norm. These are the guys you will find at this bar, and they are definitely real. Hey, who knows, you may even like it!

I was always scared to go to The Eagle because I was afraid there would be some mustachioed guys in chaps doing the tango next to the jukebox or I'd get gangbanged in the backroom on the way to the pottie. But the truth is, it's a really friendly gay bar that just happens to cater to the zaftig hairy bear-y variety. Doesn't mean that other types can't go, and really there's a wide swath of guys who do-- punks, leather daddies, miltary fetishists, muscle bears and the men (and women on occasion) who love them. It also holds the distinction of being one of the few Eagle gay bars around the country that has a dancefloor, so bring your dancing shoes, Connie. This is not a stand and model kind of bar (trust me, there are enough of those in the city as it is), but a place where a guy's guy can go out and let his mullet down for the evening. The best night seems to be Saturday. Fridays are okay-- kind of like Saturday but much less crowded. Thursday is okay-- it's supposed to be underwear night if you're into that kind of thing.

Ok - I don't care what you think about leather and all. Swallow your pride (and for the time being, nothing else!) and go. The dancing is actually quite good. And I'm not at all a leather bear. The drinks are pretty good too. Just be sure to only have enough to get a good buzz. I wouldn't exactly recommend this as a good bar to make a mess of yourself at. You might end up in the trough urinal with some scat queen! Still excellent music, very interesting crowd and lots of fun!
