This was the location for a surprise party.... and it was a great place. Unassuming & good place to meet with groups. Great service and tons of drink specials. No food but has plenty of delivery options that bartenders have menus for...
Back room upstairs has rock band, wii, and karoake + was a perfect spot for the surprise party.
Would like to return again soon -

I really find it strange that there can be all these reviews for a place that is never open. We live right down the street and walk by here on an almost daily basis. Many times, we've wanted to stop in for a drink, but not once have we seen it open. NEVER. In almost 3 years of living in the area.
I would take these reviews with a grain of salt. -

So bizarre. One Saturday I planned a graduation party here months in advance. The whole process was odd. Emails and phone calls and still uneasy if it was even booked. They had a credit card number even though it's free to rent the back room. Okkaaaayyy.....
So we show up - the bartender seemed confused about me being there at first but all was well. The back room is AWESOME though. Plenty of seating and roaming room. A Wii with about 6 interative games. The XBox has Rock Band. And then there's karaoke too. The system took some getting use to.
The really odd thing is that from 7 to around midnight we were the only people in there. I kid you not. Not one other person walked in at all.
Beers were fine and average. There were comic book covers on the cabinets behind the bar that I mentioned to the guy and he seemed annoyed I was asking who the fan was.
I would definitely throw a party here again, but just to hang out? Definitely not. There's better to be had! -
Review from Amy H.
I don't get it. This bar is decent. It's not horrible, yet not great. It's a little out-of-the-way, but not so much so that you can't take public trans and walk a bit. So why was it empty??
My friend decided to have a party here in the back room and for the entire evening we were the only people in the place besides the bartender. I swear that I saw a tumbleweed roll by.
The backroom is nice. They have Rock Band and you can do your own karaoke, so if you're into that it's fun.
The bartender was ok. They have a nice selection of beers and you can even get a "Mystery Beer" for a few bucks, which means the bartender reaches into a cooler and pulls out the first thing his little hands grab. It's like Russian Roulette. With beer.
I just don't understand why this place was empty. -

I love The Ashland. But you guys already know that :)
1. They are now open 7 days a week! (thank you football season)
2. They have these new vodka/fruit infusions - blueberry vanilla & pineapple. They are both DELICIOUS as a shot or martini! The blueberry is my favorite, but the pineapple is good too.
3. The Ashland is THE BEST place to throw a party! I hosted a bachelor/bachelorette party here - Mandy, Bryan, Adam & Chris were SO ACCOMMODATING to our group. It was a VERY busy night on top of the 25-30 that showed up for our party and The Ashland crew really took care of us and ensured everybody had a great time. It was a blast!!!
4. Karaoke Thursdays. New songs are being added regularly and the basket of props is getting quite full.
5. DT on tap. Love it.
Guaranteed good time at The Ashland. Go there...now!Listed in: My hood.

You can get a 40oz at this bar.
For $7 they will hand you a Foty in a paper bag. A Mickeys Foty.
Then you can play Guitar Hero in the back.
Go to this bar. Post haste. -

OK, make over of the century kids!!! So prior to the new management, I had been in here once. The most memorable thing was the mini corn dogs and that was only because I had finished a 10 master cleanse the day before, so any food was memorable at that point.
Now...totally different story. Adam, Bryan and Chris, the three dudes sling'n drinks and run'n the place, are so nice and funny. I truly believe that it is so important to have friendly staff. THey feature local art and the curb appeal rocks my world, as it is spray painted and looks like it is tagged everywhere.
The tap offers a good selection of microbrews and the fridge is stocked with all sorts of other good shit. My alcoholic friend is teaching me to drink more these days, but I can't quite keep up. Thats ok, because I asked for a half of a beer once and they gave it to me...thanks Bryan.
They offer kareokee and rock band in the cute and comfy room in the back and man do people rock that out. I think there are good times had by all on any given day at the Ashland. Great neighborhood spot. And...the bathrooms smells like delicious cinnamon.Listed in: The Places I Go Out

The Ashland is your everything bar. It's a chill bar, party bar, sports bar, your neighborhood bar. The outside patio is nice to sit back and relax on a fine Chicago summer night or play a game of Bags. You won't miss the newly tagged graffiti on the outside that flows inside. The inside is your natural bar with local art splattered on the walls. On tap you will find Rouge Dead Guy Ale, Guinness, Magic Hat #9, and always a fav Blue Moon. The back room of The Ashland is the place to be with a private bar, comfy couches, Karaoke (with props!), Rock Band, & Wii. The ladies bathroom smells great with one of those timed air fresheners. You'll find plenty of graffiti of permanent marker on the stall walls from drunken patrons. All in all I adored my time spent at The Ashland. I enjoyed it so much my fiance & I had our bachism party here!

Had a chance to check this place out this weekend. We got there sometime after 12:30 so it wasn't a lot of people there.
Not too bad! I really liked the fact that there was plenty places to park. Nice, cozy place! Not too big not too small.
I thought it was funny that at almost 2AM, the bartender made an announcement that last call was coming and whatever wasn't dranken he was taking. I downed my Bud Light and high tailed it homeListed in: Great Bars, View of the Lake

You know, sometimes the idea of ordering a beer is really daunting. Seriously. I love beer and have a really hard time just picking one. So when the boy and I wandered into the Ashland on a Friday night not long ago I was intrigued to see the special listed as "mystery beer".
How does that work, I asked. Turns out for $2 the bar tender just reaches into a fridge below the counter and pulls out two beers. He doesn't look, just pulls. Honestly we had about a 50% success rate. I drank two crappy beers and let boy have the decent picks (he was paying afterall).
While my beers weren't very good, I was still pleased. It was like when I was a kid and I saw those mystery grab bags at the dollar store and I always got one rather than picking out a single toy. This almost never worked in my favor, but the suspense and mystery had too much sway to deter me. I'm pleased that the Ashland offers me a grown up version of my precious grab bags (and at least even bad beer will get you drunk!) -

Did you know that the Ashland has a new part-owner? This place is owned by the same guy that ran Meritage (before it closed in Dec), the new bbq joint Risque (which I have not yet tried), new pizza parlour Pergatory Pizza and mm..what was the other restaurat? Oh. Fixture.
Yup, but I guess Chris brought in a partner to run The Ashland, his name is Adam - and since Adam has been around, I've seen some cool changes. There is now this funky lounge section in the front of the room which changes the vibe a bit. I like it!
Their food is great! the must have is definitely the BLT - Darius makes a MEAN buttery sandwich. It's great place to throw party but also a great place to chill and hang with your friends. They have SO many types of beer in the fridge. Just ask! and inexpensive!
Enjoy! -
Review from Dianne S.
You'll find an unassuming good time here.
Cheap drinks, board games (Ghetto-opoly, ever heard of it?!), couches. Need I say more?
Friendly bartender. Actually, the guy behind the bar is also part owner. My husband recognized him from Grand River in Lakeview where he once DJ'ed.
This joint is like a classic mullet. Business in the front and party in the back! So go to the back lounge area! You'll definitely find a good time:
1. Karoke with variety (think Taylor Swift & Busta Rhymes).
2. Game on! Wii in the back.
They only have a handful of games but the one that counts, the one all the cool kids are playing is Just Dance. You'll never see your boyfriend/husband/significant other the same way after you see a double body roll as he dances to Womanizer.
3. Comfy comfy pleather/leather couches that you just sink into!
It's basically like hanging out at a friend's apartment without having to help clean up afterwards=)
Thought the chalkboard stalls in the women's bathroom were an interesting touch. Not too amused that one of the stalls had a curtain instead of a door though. -

We were out last night introducing our Brit couple friends to some Chicago style pizza. We of course selected Art of Pizza for their tasting pleasure. The mission was to pickup the pizza and take it to a fun pub and hangout.
Originally, I suggested Jake's. A great low key, fun bar in the greater lakeview area. However, I've dragged the crew there the past 3 weeks in a row and the crew gets bored rather quickly. Thanks to yelp, I found The Ashland.
The Ashland was a good shake up to some of our usual spots. Unexpectedly, nice inside, with friendly bartender, and a fun & chill crowd inside. All was well. The drink special was $3 tap beers. And I mean all tap beers. $3 Boddingtons which is sweet!
I read about the gaming that takes place here. So after our fill of pizza, we checked out the game room (A nicer version of a Midwest basement). The game room is serious w/ lots of gaming options..Rock Band, Wii, SNES, and Atari. The room is decked out in comfortable leather couches as well.
Being a Tuesday night the game room was dark and shut down. The bartender had no qualms on plugging the room in and away we went.
Wii sports was our pleasure and I dominated the field in Wii Tennis. However, Jess, a small 100lb British gal took me to town in boxing. Still sore today from that debacle.
The point being was that I was 10 again and this bar supplied the energy and friendly confines that I've missed so much in my years growing up. The Ashland is like you're parents' midwest basement, but nicer and includes a fully stocked bar. What more could you ask for?
Oh and the drink specials are pretty solid every night!
Next time, I'm bringing in some NHL '96 and I will make Wayne Gretzky's head bleed! -

Seriously, The Ashland?
Where have you been all my life?
I have passed by this place a time or two before and nothing about it made me want to check it out.
A friend of mine took me by there this passed Friday- and I was immediately impressed by the L.A. Graf on the exterior.
(I'm told the dudes that own the place did it- and if so, y'all wanna throw up with me sometime? *jokes*)
But anyway....
This place is amazing.
The guys running the operation are really nice, and even though it wasn't packed in there- every body was chill as hell.
Really good vibes all over.
And god-damn if they don't have Xbox and Wii up in that b**ch!
Not to mention a delicious array of booze.
What more could I ask for?
See you soon The Ashland!
Maybe next time I'll get drunk enough to propose to you? -

Ok, Where to start? Adam has got to be the best owner in the world. I had a "Dads" group meeting at the Ashland recently and he went above and beyond to make our visit special. This guy brings a new attitude and hospitality to the Chicago scene. He understands his clientele and is willing to go the extra mile to help.
The staff is friendly and knowledgeable without pretentiousness.
Young or Old they make you feel welcome.
While there is no food service, the staff will order from any local joint.
Oh, and if you get a chance hit up the "rock-star" video game with some friends!
Best "new" old spot in town! -

Kind if sterile and boring, if we hadn't been with friends we would have been extremely bored. at least this place has a good location and a fair amount (for the site) of TVs. I wouldn't go here as a destination.
I'm just sayin', is all.
drinks are inexpensive, however. -

I actually hesitated to write a review of the Ashland, only because I'm such an awesome cool trendsetter that by putting my stamp of approval in it will make it be swarmed by millions or annoying condo-monkeys.
Then I woke up in this version of reality where the only people that read my reviews rule and I would love to hang out with anyway.
The ashland is now offically my favorite bar.
yaraoke, rock band, yummy drinks, great drink specials, awesome staff, excellent artwork (someone needs to get me the Zombie Batman behind the bar!) and cool patrons.

I have several requirements for bars in Chicago to reach epic status. Dangerous jukebox, top notch beer selection, clean, nice people, no attitudes and kick ass owners...oh and that certain something that makes me come back again and again. The Ashland has it all and then some. No attitudes and everyone I've ever met there makes each visit better than the last.
The new owners are fun, top notch, professional and well...a little hot. Not in the homosexual way but in a bro-mantic way. I'm sure you can understand. With a group of dudes like that it's hard not to have a little bro-mance. Did I mention the beautiful Mandy...she runs the Karaoke on Thursday and she totally rocks.
The beer selection is fantastic. It may be the best beer selection in Chicago. Chris and Brian truly have excellent taste and selection abilities. Oh, did I mention they have tons of custom created drinks for the ladies? Or gents if you like mixed drinks. Let's not forget the two dollar mystery beer (I hope they never get rid of that).
The Ashland has Wii and Xbox. Yeup, they let you play them too. You do have to ask but the boys are always willing pump up the volume in the back.
In short, if you are looking for a new spot to chill, drink some suds, jam some Wii or Xbox, hang with awesome people or just get a little bro-mantic with Big A, Chris or Brian...this is your new home away from home.
Be warned...if you have a regular hang out...be prepared to start cheating on your ex-bar and find true bar-mance.
The Ashland is that Chicago bar providing some of the best Chicago nightlife and I'm forever theirs. Thanks boys and see you tonight. Tell em' Doctor Search sent you.
Ashland UPDATE: It has been several months since my last post about the most kick ass bar in AMERICA...some may have thought the bro-mance may have worn off. As with may local bars and Chicago nightlife spots...my continued romance with The Ashland have only grown stronger. Please go there and take in The Ashland experience. You have my word, the Boyz will not disappoint. -

I have to agree with the recent yelpers in that the new management is definitely an improvement. I'm sure one can chalk part of it up to being all nice when the new guy moves in, but overall, Adam and his staff seem like down to earth, normal guys who just want to provide a good time. The atmosphere is a little nicer, more loungy during the week, but the prices are still cheap.
I am told that this will be a good destination for football season though, so it will still retain a sports bar theme when the time comes.
The back room is also a great place for private parties, and the drink packages start as low as $20, which is definitely cheaper than most bars. Overall, the place is going in the right direction, and I look forward to more nights out at the Ashland. -

This place has been upgraded to 5 stars and my favorite bar in Chicago. The bartenders are awesome. They actually REFILLED my martini tonight free of charge - who does that?!? I had the "Georgia Peach" and "Sexy Alligator" and both were fantastic. It's what you'd expect at an upscale, classy, snotty place, and yet you can get them at a cool, laidback neighborhood bar. We will be back again and again and again...
Not to mention there was a wasted guy there tonight who brought his bike into the bar and never took off his helmet. Good people watching, to say the very least ;-)Listed in: My Neighborhood, The Places I Go Out

I have lived within a 5 minute walk of this bar for two years and it took me that long to actually stop in for drinks. WHAT WAS I THINKING?
The Ashland is the kind of bar I wish more bars were like. The staff was very friendly and pleasant, the beer selection was top notch, the people there were not the usual Lincoln Park ass-holes, and they have board games...what's not to love?
No seriously, there's also Guitar Hero in the back and you can play Connect 4 in the front of the bar. Who does that? No one. That's why I liked the Ashland.
We worked on a couple of the $10 buckets 'o beer for a while and played a few intense matches of Connect 4 before we moved on to "Ghetto-opoly." Don't ask.
The only drawback I saw was that one of our group went up to get a special he saw on one of the monitors and the bartender told him they're not doing that special anymore, but they haven't updated the monitors in a long time, so we should look at the blackboard, not the TV monitors. Confusing, especially since we all hate looking at blackboards because it reminds us of school.
I will be back...oh yes, I will be back.Listed in: Bars In My Neighborhood I…

Hell yes! This place rocks!
Mandy's Karaoke is the bomb! The mystery beer for $2 is the best deal in town, even when it's not the greatest and Rock band is my new favorite pastime :)
Also did I mention the pineapple infused vodka? Dangerously yummy and they're working on a variety of them to come! Play on words? oh yes I think so ;) -

Went to this joint last Monday and had an absolute blast. They're running a 'local band' networking event on Mondays wherein local up & comers bring in their cd's and whomever the guest dj is, plays them. It was a lot of fun and I met a TON of cool people. "Jay" the bartender rules, yet I owe my hangover on Tuesday to him...thanks, Jay - ya bastard.
I didn't partake in the $1 pizza puffs but, the place was packed and everyone was having great times. I highly recommend it - especially on Mondays! -

Another great night at The Ashland! I had a couple of IPA brews, loosened up a little and rocked the karaoke mic with Sarah Jayne! They had a really good turn out last night. The place was really crowded! I'm happy to see it doing well! Lots of people at the tables on the outdoor patio, several groups inside and (of course) Stacy's huge birthday party spread throughout and in the back room.
The reason The Ashland is so fun is the people. Everyone is fun and low key -typically people doing karaoke all become friends and end up cheering each other on and/or doing duets together!
Another good time. Every time I come here I realize again why I like it so much!3 Previous Reviews: Show all »

Review Needs Update
In these turbulent economic times, purchasing power may feel limited in most establishments throughout Chicagoland. Certainly at the Ashland you will find them to be quite contrarians with daily specials that will make sure you will get your money's worth.
To the extent you are willing to sacrifice comfort, good eye candy, nice furniture for this boost in purchasing power then I would say go on through! The daily drink specials are enviable and you will find a large sign posting the specials on any given day outside. Food is served here and I have yet to try as every time I come here I do not want to stay very long due to the local crowd of a mix of yuppy pop collars and hipster long hair beardsters.
Throw me a life preserver!
Please note: There has been a change in ownership since I last visited, so do not rely on this review as I have not been there since the ownership change. -

While driving South on Ashland over the weekend, the fiance and I were determined to stop at the first bar we saw to get a drink. As we approached the Ashland we both thought it looked kind of ghetto due to the huge graffiti style mural on the side of the building. Kept driving by and looked inside to see a really welcoming looking place. Parked the car easily across the street.
DRINKS: This place had the most random assortment of taps I have ever seen. 3 Magic Hat taps, 2 of which I didn't even know existed. Plenty of bottles including La Fin Du Monde which is one of my favorites. Big blackboard with specials written.
ATMOSPHERE: As we walked in and approached the bar, the bartender carded us. Very nice man, he let me sample some beer before my purchase. We sat at the bar and noticed some cool art on the walls. A few framed comics. I could hear either Guitar Hero or Rock Band going on in the back room. There were a few tv's. Half were showing Command (one of the greatest movies ever) and the others had Leathal Weapon. Great selections. The crowd was pretty tame, but there was a woman sitting right by me at the bar with an extremely loud voice, like she was shouting in my ear. No big deal.
In all, I would love to come back with some friends and try all of the random assortment of craft brews. -

Hello awesome bar in Chicago.
The inside is nothing special at all. Like some reviewers have hinted at, it can kind of come off as dive bar. But hey, I don't go to bars for the scenery, I go for the drinks. The bartenders are mixologists and make amazing martinis. I'm a girl who thrives off of fruity martinis. The bartenders would ask what I liked (citrus, sweet, ect) and made something excellent for me every time. They also do a lot of infusions of their own - we did some shots of pineapple-blueberry infused vodka. yum.
And for those of you who love it... Rock Band and Guitar Hero in the back room! -

My friends Allie B and Eric B told us to meet them here one Friday night. It was fantastic. I will steal her description and say it's not very "divey" on the inside, just the outside. Wrigleyville North or Carol's Pub - those are dives.
The Ashland has a great variety of beer on tap and in bottles with prices that are great. I participated in their "Mystery Beer" for $2 and had both good and bad luck. Boo Iron City beer! -

I recently hosted my wife's 30th birthday party here. We were able to reserve the back room for a Saturday night of karaoke, wii sports, and good beer. The package deal was really reasonable and I did not have to pay extra for the private room. The owners and Mandy were all very helpful, polite, professional, and fun.
They have fantastic beers on tap and they make great vodka infusions. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly with art from local artists on the walls. This was a great place to host the wife's party, but I also think it will become my new neighborhood bar. -

Three words: Pineapple infused vodka. WOW. The yummiest thing I have ever had in a long time. The bartender has this big jar of vodka with tons of pineapple pieces floating in it. Even though I'm not drinking at the moment, it sounded too good to pass up, so I had me a shot. Damn, the best thing ever. You barely taste the vodka b/c of the pineapple, but there is plenty of vodka in there, b/c you get that nice warmth in your belly and the buzz follows. It's not overly sweet, and something about the combination of the vodka and pineapple- wow, it was so good, I can't even stop talking about it. There is also a blueberry infused vodka jar, that I took a sip of, but i wasn't a fan of that one. I'd go back here just for that pineapple vodka alone.
The Ashland is a great casual neighborhood bar and i'm so glad I found it! The front is a nice bar area with big tv's and a juke box. In the back, there is a lounge area with couches and two big tv screens that can be used for the wii, rock band, or just plain karaoke. It's a great place for private parties b/c the bar supplies all the fun equipment for you.
What a great bar, can't wait to return! -

I don't know why everyone's rippin on this bar.
Sure, it's across from like a mini mall and near a strange intersection or something which makes it awkward, almost like you're at an oasis (off the highway not in a desert).
But I had the best fish fry of my life there!!!!! There was so much food that three girls couldn't finish one order! And the bartender was probably the nicest and accommodating guy around.
Go there if you want a quiet night and a damn good cod din! -

Went here on a Tuesday night with Janette L (below). The place was almost completely dead (maybe 4-5 regulars), but the staff were very friendly and the food was cheap and delicious. The Bubba sauce was interesting and worth a second try, and the fries were delicious.
Don't know what this place is like on the weekends, but if you want to have a chill night with a couple friends stop by the Ashland for good cheap food and a frosty brew (or a shot of Jack, which they have on tap). -

Had to check this place out after Citysearch rates this place #5 for best wings in Chicago.
In my tour de wings I would have to rate this below Bird's Nest for size and flavor. Buffalo was not spicy at all and my friends really enjoyed the "Bubba" (a mix of Buffalo, ranch, and BBQ?) wings. Get the fries, comes in a huge basket and were served with a good dipping sauce. Service and beer specials were great. Tuesdays $1.50 Miller Lites and 25 cent wings.
Don't know if I would come back but it was a nice place to check out. -

Hmmm... Other than the extemely cheap beer ($3 imports on tap, $2 domestics) and the killer beer list of micro-brews and imports (probably close to 100 or so) I wouldn't ever set foot in this place again. It was like drinking in a cardboard box. No music unless you played the jukebox (it had the crappy jukebox I can't stand - one song per album crap). So when it was quiet it was a echo infested square. They also apparently don't know how to operate a heating system, it never seemed to be above 60 degrees in here, yet the had the ceilings fans going at an 11. Maybe I would try it again in the summertime, but wow not a good way to start a Friday night out.
*Update* Although it is still not getting more than two stars from me, I have been back and the experience has been slightly better. -

Went here for my birthday party last night. It's a smaller bar and didn't have that many people there, so it seemed like the bar was ours. :)
Had about 25 people there and there was plenty of seating in either the 1st or 2nd floor. Cheap beer buckets on sat ($14 for imports, $12 for domestics). Also, the shots were $6-7 each for Patron which is a deal in itself! I'm going to hold off drinking for a lil bit, but i'll be back for sure. -

Board games, great prices and a small albeit, great selection of beer. I'm almost a fan except this seems like it should be more of a neighborhood bar located on some side street than right on Ashland and that it isn't seems to carry into the bar a bit.
