I live about half an hour from this cafe, and it's not as though there are tons of reasons to trek out to Trumansburg NY. but I always find a reason to go out there (seriously, I just keep buying gurgle pots at that store next to the pizza place), because I am so in love with this little restaurant.
First and foremost, their chocolate almond crossaint is the single best baked good I have ever had. Ever. In fact, if the Artisan Cafe was any closer to my house, I would probably have gained 100 pounds since their opening.
I also really love their sandwiches. When they first opened, I heard from several people how expensive the cafe was. It's true, you get what seems to be a fairly basic sandwich for at least a couple dollars more than you would at a place like Ithaca Bakery. Howver the quality is sooo apparent as soon as you take your first bite. I am most in love with their Croque Madame (some pretty classic french fare there) - so much in fact I think I may have eaten only one other sandwich off their menu (it was a steak egg and cheese crossaint - also great - but not the croque madame!). Coffee and tea is also great and everything is prepared and served with obvious care. Food there is not exactly fast, but it's a comfortable place and it's easy to relax while you wait.
If you fall in love with the bread (like I did), brace yourself if you want to buy a loaf! You have to order in advance and it is $$$$$. I'll skip this particular function of theirs in the future and continue to buy my bread at the Carriage House or from Fat Boy at the Farmer's Market. -

Artisan Cafe is in a storefront along the charming main street in tiny Trumansville north of Ithaca, New York - Finger Lakes region. It's clean and bright and homey all at once. There are shelves of books to read along the walls and great pecan rolls to savor -- tricky to do both at the same time, but we tried.
The owner and her son make the pastries and delicious crusty bread themselves. Her son learned bread-making in Italy and France - he uses wild yeast, flour and water. AND he grinds his own grain! Talk about devotion.
I had a great pastrami with local cheese and that excellent bread. Mike had a grilled cheese with three kinds of cheese. Everything is simply and beautifully presented. Don't miss! -

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the croissants. You haven't lived if you haven't tried.
