I used to love the Alley too. I always though that when I was old enough to go shop there I would buy all of it! Now I am 25, and I haven't grown out of it- but I realize that what seemed to me as really expensive at 16 *really* is that expensive. Still, fondness persists.

I see things I like, but rarely things I fall in love with. Maybe the Hot Topic phenomenon is spreading as others suggest.  I find the Alley has varying quality of clothes in terms of style. I find some garments to be kinda cheesy, and I wish there was more variety (says the neo-victorian). I know there is awesome goth/industrial stuff out there so why am I not seeing it? If your going to charge crazy prices then lets see something worth paying for. Also, I am not a big girl at all and I have tried some things out before only to find they run on the small side.

Still, Alley is worth going. It's a store, you want to buy something or not? Your not losing out on going in and looking around. Maybe you find something...I have more respect for them over Hot Topic any day anyways.

The Alley rates like, five stars before you move to the City, four stars when you move to Lakeview and enjoy the energy at Belmont and Clark, and go dancing a lot at Spin, Neo, Liar's Club, or rock out with your coq out at Subterranean and EXIT.

Then after that, the visits are seldom and you feel like "that guy" when you come back. Like you're in here trying to relive some of the bands of your Youth that may or may not have come back into vogue with the skater punks.

The Alley does have a good selection of leather jackets, arm bands, rock tees, silver jewelry, Doc Martens and such to make that perfect Punx Not Dead statement. While you'd think service here would be horrible, it's not. My sales clerk and the clerks on my way out were super nice, when they could've been like the tattoed versions of Jack Black in High Fidelity.

And under no circumstances should you park in the Dunkin Donuts lot. They'll boot your grandma on her 100th birthday if they could. Beware.

Punx not dead!

Don't let the name intimidate you folks...just because it's called the Alley doesn't mean it's related to their treatment of their patrons...LOL!

I love the Alley for one reason...cool leather goods selection (and I don't mean whips necessarily!).  From the moment you walk into the Alley, you can smell the leather jackets and coats, and there always seems to be a sale on leather goods.

They also have a great selection of sterling silver and steel rings, and they do tattooing and piercing as well.

Additionally, they have great selection of other specialty items, like flasks, silver jewelry and certain costuming items.

Always a great shop to browse in!

Giant, even more overpriced Hot Topic. Big deal. I didn't even think this place was that great when I was 15, which is really saying something. Pretty much *everything* is tacky, cheesy, overdone, busy, clashing, obnoxious, cliché... Need I go on?

I really hate to give this place a bad review, but I've been coming here for at least 10 years and it has really gone down hill.  At least it used to carry some good stuff back then, and now it's just turned into a gigantic hot topic that charges waaaay too much.  Why is it that places usually change, but rarely for the better?  arg.  It's sad to see this gem fade away and be trendier by the day, but whatever.  On line shopping it is for me.

Other external factors that are not the stores fault are that the parking here sucks.  Not to mention they advertise to park in the Dunkin Donuts lot, and trust me, even if you go to the Alley only and walk directly to and from, these parking Nazi's WILL boot your car.  Save yourself the drama and get your stuff on line.

I went in here with one of my friends at about 10:30 last night after we decided that another tattoo would be a good idea! Rick took care of me.  he was really nice, and my two little paw prints on my foot look great.  Prices were super reasonable ($50 minimum). I asked him about touching up 2 other ones I have, and I will definitely be back to let him fix them for me.   my friend just had 2 of hers touched up by Eric, and he was really nice as well.

I can't comment on any of the merchandise, but the tattoo people know what they are doing!

This place is not far from where I live and it's allure has called me back again.  I picked up more cool under-things and I had to buy these panties just for some of the hateful people that have been e-mailing me.
As far as I know I have not offended anybody on this site----if I have I would welcome a moderator or whomever to tell me and I will indeed modify my behavior and appologize.  I actually am a very good person and I really like people.  I don't understand why I am getting hate e-mail; I probably should not even try to defend myself and should not even address this stuff and give it credibility but I am a bit hurt:
1.  No I am neither a slut or a whore-I just enjoy being a girl!
2.  No it is not for sale and never will be!
3. They are REAL and not bought by my parents or any phantom guy.
4. Guy Bacci or any of the other Bacci boys are not my pimps. I have never taken any money from them.  I have enjoyed their hospitality on occassion.  They are just very nice people and I hope good friends.  No I am not f**king anyone in that family!
I posted a pic of me wearing my new panties as my answer to all my hate monger yelpsters that have sent me messages---it will probably cause me to get more but so be it.  If my conduct is so offensive then I have no problem leaving this site forever.

This place blows, plain and simple. EVERYthing is over priced INCLUDING the jewelry, clothing, accessories etc.

"If you really feel you must fit into such a scene and have not been able to find yourself as of yet. Well please,be our guest and step on in and let us tell you just exactly who you are and what price you must pay to be such an image."

The sad thing is that most of the employees there really buy into all the scene crap as well and have higher then thou attitudes because they work there. hah. Retail employees are retail employees guys,no matter if you're abercrombie & fitch , fubu or the alley!!!

The ONLY redeeming factor to this place,is that their main piercer Scott, is a very decent human being and he knows his trade well. STILL charges too much for jewelry though! But hey,I guess if you're gonna rob kids, you might as well rob 'em blind huh?
Don't waste your time at this rotting abyss.

The Alley is it's own joke.
The Alley can be your punk rock headquarters where you can get a shirt from some band that broke up three years before you were born that some crap band is going to probably cover in  a few weeks. Their clothes are ridiculously over priced (PS I know where they get most of their hats  and some of their jewelery and will gladly give anyone the info- I got a hat they were selling for 25 for five bucks). The staff is pretentsious and usually just plain rude. Apparently if you enter the store and arent wearing plaid and/or a black t shirt you are not worthy of any form of customer service. The Alley owns several other store in the general area- the only one I can think off of hand is jive monkey.. Jive monkey can be fun- but for much less money you can make your own iron on shirts.

Unless you're fifteen, wearing UFOs and have your lip pierced pass this place up.

A NOTE though--- I dont know from personal expierence but I have heard very good things regarding their piercers.

The Alley gets two stars for entertainment value, but I would never buy anything there because the prices make you laugh out loud. If you want anything goth, fetish, punk, emo - WHATEVER, that's what the internet is for. Or heck, even Hot Topic has better prices and you can get the same crappy vinyl/plaid/mesh/spikey clothes there.

I do like how the store is setup with the kind of "mosh pit" in the middle where you can see all the shirts hanging on the walls. I don't think The Alley is going to be going anywhere soon as it seems to be a Chicago staple, but I really don't know how they can afford such a huge space in such a prime location. Do they really sell that many leather platform boots?

As with most other reviewers, this place is entertaining at best.

My biggest problem with the store is that they try to appeal to consumers by saying that their clothing is "unique," when it is just like all the other crap they sell at Hot Topic.  Aside from their selection of Dr. Martens, there's almost nothing in here that appeals to anyone outside of the weird jewelry with spikes genre.  Sometimes they have cute buttons or fun t-shirts, but that stuff is overshadowed by their gigantic selection of unusually large black pants with chains already attached.  But, for the faux goth crowd, they have everything you need to look like a giant tool.  Shop on.

The Alley, although only a tiny fraction of its former self, stands as one of the few reminders of the counter-culture neighborhood that used to thrive near Clark & Belmont.  Before the yuppie invasion in the area, this shopping district, with The Alley at its heart, was one of the only places to pick up gothic, industrial and punk rock/alternative clothing and accessories. Other stores like Armageddon, and Wax Trax (on Lincoln) are long gone, but the Alley still remains.

Fans of this music culture used to just come and hang out in the area, and grab some coffee at "Punk and Donuts" as we called it (there was no Starbucks).  When and if The Alley closes down, that will mark the end of a cultural epoch.

Cultural significance aside, The Alley as it is today (a smaller store then it used to be) is still a fun store to check out, even though I rarely see anything worth spending money on anymore.  The Alley is a unique store, and you'll find some things there you won't see anywhere else.

If you want some cool shoes, gothic or punk clothing, funny t-shirts, leather coats, interesting trinkets, or piercings, then check out The Alley.

If you ever meet me you would be very suprised to find out that yes I like gothy and punk stuff. Or maybe you wouldn't be, but my appearance says otherwise. The Alley has a decent selection of leather goods, t-shirts and hoodies. Yes, they are overpriced but c'mon this is Lakeview/Lincoln Park and that is to be expected!

Parking sucks, and even though they say you could park in the Dunkin Donuts lot as long as you are shopping there, I wouldn't risk my car in there. I just happen to have amazing luck with metered street parking in the area so that isn't really an issue. AVOID on Cubs game days as you will have to deal with the streaming mass of humanity walking from the ballpark.

Four stars alone for this cool dress I found in red printed with little black bats. I just wish that I was small enough to fit in it. Dammit :(.

This place could make Clinton and Stacy of "What Not to Wear" implode from the sheer volume of "DON'TS".

One extra star, however, for a cute pair of emergency sunglasses I bought a few years for $10 and still have - they havent completely disintegrated from use.  Thats impressive.

Other than that,  I always feel a little stabby after coming out of here.

I can't believe this place gets such crappy reviews. I thought everyone was a fan of the alley. Guess not.

When I was a teen and I would come here with my little friends....the place scared me.

Now just past my teen years (wink wink) this place feels so warm and inviting. I want all of the EMO hoodies. ALL OF THEM!
I haven't bought one since I think they are too pricey...and I could have a black hoodie from somewhere else for half the price...but still it's not EMO. However, it's not that serious. I am by no means an EMO freak, but the girl has some evil class....I dig her. (I'm a little too old for her though, I do realize this, but ask me if I care).

As for the other ladies' clothes upstairs...funny t-shirts you can't find anywhere else...even for the little tots, slut-y vamp outfits (great for Halloween or your step-mothers third wedding). Anyway, you don't have to be goth or wanna-be goth to shop here....people get way too serious about where you fit in.....or where you don't....grow up and get yourself an EMO shirt...sounds like an oxymoron just waiting to happen.

Yah, I'm a tourist and don't live in Chicago but this was probably the best place I saw in Chicago.  If I lived in Chicago and they added a bar I could see myself hanging out here all the time.

The store is HUGE and the selection is awesome.  My only problem is everything is RIDICIOUSLY overpriced.  If everything was half the price of what's listed then I would have left this store with multipe bags in each hand.

So a bunch of people out there just saw me give this place a four star rating and are now getting all pissed off and saying things like "Dude, the Alley is like Hot Topic!" and "No real punks go in there!" and "Leather's for gays!" etc, etc. First, I would like to point out that all these people begged their parents to drop them off at the Metra station closest to their house when they were 14 so they could visit the Alley. Second, the rating was for the piercing station, not the entire store, so chill out.

While the stuff they sell in the actual store does not especially interest me, I think the piercing here is pretty good. I recently got my septum done, and it actually went pretty smoothly. This is a big deal for me because I am about as afraid of needles as I am of getting the herp, although the herpes fright goes away when I'm wearing jock clothes and wasted off of Miller Light after a night of clubbing. ("Come on baby, condoms are for pussies, and you know it's my birthday.")

The whole atmosphere was laid back and a good job was done. There's nothing to complain about in that scenario. Wait, let me make sure first. Nope, nothing to complain about. It was a bit expensive, but that is because I got an 8 gauge piercing, which jacked the price up.

So, maybe people are right on saying the boots and shit here are pretty lame, but lay off of the piercers. They are certified, and while that may not seem like a big deal to some people, I got my lip done at some backwoods tattoo shop when I was 17 and that shit ain't pierced straight, so I'd like to try and get better work done from now on.

I used to love you in my high school goth phase and then I grew up and got a job and a life. And now you're the second coming of all that is trendy, emo, and cheesy.

What happened? I'm tired of hearing the ads on Q101 and I'm tired of seeing the kids from the suburbs come out of your store thinking they're so cool 'cause they came down from Barrington to buy tight checkered pants and a Skinny Puppy shirt.

I am not a criminal if I walk into your store with a laptop bag (for work of course) just because it's a bag. I refuse to hand it over to some $8/hr employee when that laptop is more valuable than their car probably. Your shoes are uncomfortable and overpriced, your leather jackets are old and reek of chemical tanner, your staff is consistently rude and full of themselves. Baby you're not cool 'cause you're behind the counter with 9 visible piercings-you're just an easy target for a metal detector.

You should be ashamed of yourself and what you've become. Just sign the suicide note and be done with it.

This place used to be decent until Hot Topic rolled into town. Now they are having trouble competing and are only offering the most corture punk/metal/goth apparel (an oxy moron don't ya think?)

I used to like this place in highschool, they had some chain wallets and band T-shirts you couldn't get in the suburbs. Nothing pisses off the monoculture suburbanites like a Cradle of Filth T-Shirt that says, "Jesus is a C*NT" (of course without the asterik). But then you leave highschool and growup and stop trying to impress or scare away your insecurites and realize that everything here makes you look silly, and is way overpriced.

SO, I'm not a 12 year-old girl who wants to give my mother a stroke by buying studded belts and "crazy" belt buckles and overpriced t-shirts but I still kind of like the alley.

I mean I'm 26 and a mom and wear cardigans and own a whole crop of tank tops from Old Navy but when I decided to get new plugs (yes .. plugs because I have stretched out ears OMG OMG!!! ) the guys at the piercing "counter" were really helpful and didn't look at me like I was some crazy bag lady who wandered into the store looking for a corner to drool in.

That being said... umm.. I don't think anyone except for suburban Emo kids are "cool" enough for this dusty tired clothing store and I am ok with that.

If you're 12 or 13 years old, mad at the world, and from the chicago suburbs...  this is what heaven looks like to you.  when you hit 14 your mind will change.  this rule is universal, however there is an interesting paradox that exists in that the employees who are obviously old enough to know better a.)do not know better and b.)are VERY PROUD of their employer!

any idiot could do just about any job offered at this joint and the employees are pretty disposable, they are employed by an army of retards willing to be exploited because their childhood dream of working at the alley has finally come true.

oh yeah, and the owner is a real fatass.

I gotta agree with other reviewers, what a load of overpriced crapola.

Not even well displayed. Yuk.

I can handle staff with attitude but I have no other reason to come here, except my fiancee likes to look at the clothes and home furnishings. I hate spending money here but it's a thing to do when you're on Belmont and got nothing else to do.

The piercing parlor here is pretty good and my daughter-in-law got some serious metal installed here and no regrets.

For fetish wear you can probably find better online or even at Hot Topic.

Speaking of Hot Topic, I guess The Alley used to be a more interesting place before the whole world turned goth. Now virtually anything my pagan friends or my daughters would have bought at The Alley is now available in any mall on the planet. If I want Indonesian puppets or other world goods, I can go to World Market. So I have no reason at all to go to this godfersaken piece of crap excuse for a store.

It doesn't help that they keep playing that screaming a-hole commercial on Q-101 as if that is still clever and appealing somehow.

I have childhood memories of sneaking into the other alley location that existed in the 70s, in Woodfield Mall (!) and gawking at the bongs!  They had the coolest metal tread-plate floor- I sooo wanted to do my room in tread-plate.  Instead the closest I got was my Mom letting me hang the Yes mirror  that I bought there.  Later, in the 80s, my punk rock shopping took be to the city alley.

Went in there not too long ago, and thought- the world doesn't need this place in the least.  The place just sucks.  Repeat after me, "the alley sucks" if you dare.

I would have loved this store when I was 14. From my experience the piercers are mean and rude and very snotty. I used to work in a studio several years ago poking holes through people and when I asked the piercer on duty about his choice of placement on a ear piercing, he freaked out and acted like a total dick. You stick holes through people buddy! Don't let it go to your head.

The staff also seem to have a general attitude problem. The basement is great if you like funky boots and they have some great sales but over all the Alley is very over priced. Oh, and their radio commercials SUCK BALLS.

If you like alternative clothing, I would check out redemption klothing's site. I've put in many orders with them and they are awesome!

I remeber the Alley when it was actually in the alley, and they had a few t-shirts, combat boots, and leather motorcycle jackets.

They now sell some of everything.

They have a very nice selection of affordably priced leather jackets. They also have excellent quality reversable Schott jackets which are fantastic.

They have by far the best belt buckle collection in the city. They have the classic skulls, western types, etc. But where their selection really stands out is they have really cool Robot buckles, a sampler buckle, and just some welll designed buckles in general you don't see anywhere else.

They also have an enormous t-shirt section.

It isn't what it used to be, but for certain things, it is the only place to go!

REVIEW OF PIERCING COUNTER ONLY:

For body piercing and jewelry, I go see the two Scotts at The Alley.  These guys are good, know their stuff, and are no nonsense when it comes to putting the needle to the flesh.  If you are thinking about a piercing, you can trust them to give you good advice and the real deal on what to expect.  When it comes to actually getting pierced, these guys have it down.  They will make you comfortable and minimize the trauma as much as possible.  Finally, they have a limited but cool jewelry selection.  It may seem pricey at first, but their goods are top quality.  I'm picky whe it comes to the pricky-pricky and these guys have won me as a client.  They have stretched my ears twice and pierced my septum for me.  I will be back.

Ok, so there was a time and a place for the Alley. But, for fucks sake. This place is like a sick, old, one legged horse that just needs to be put of its misery.

There was a point in my life when I did own a vast array of studded belts, but I am an adult now. Why hasn't this place grown up at all? I don't get it. They literally have the same merchandise they were shilling when I was a regular 10 years ago.

I pretty much completely blocked this place from my mind until I recently walked by and thought "oh, for old times sake" and gave it a walk around. That was until some kid confronted me for daring to carry my sorta large purse on my person and into the store. How totally edgy of him.

I'll give them this: they know their clientele- high school kids who want to be goth, punk, or somewhere in between and have a wallet full of their parents' hard-earned cash to blow on overpriced wares.
Every person that works here that I've ever encountered that works here comes off as thinking they're better than every one else. Smug to the core. Need I remind them that there are scores of smarmy punks who could replace them at a rate of about a dime a dozen, and that their salary is paid by babysitting dollars and the credit card of mommykins and daddykins? Seriously, get over yourself.

when i moved to chicago my boyfriend took me to THE ALLEY. I found it to be a pretty cool store..but again like any other shop its to expenisive for my taste. Im more of a Vintage shoper..im not going to spend 60$ on a skirt or shirt. let alone 100$ on some pair of pants. Money doesnt grow on trees. they Do have nice items i wish i could afford to buy. I believe this store is more then the richer person..Who can afford their outragious prices. Or a out of towner who can afford to buy something in chicago as a keepsake.

Their staff was always nice to me, ive probly gone in this store maybe 3 times in 3 years. The last time i went into this store my friend wanted to get her body pirced..i cant remeber where..but the pircers were busy, and had no time for her. she had money and wanted to get pirced...but they were " booked" up. no clients in sight.

i loved their shoes yet i cant afford a pair

Hell yeah 5 stars.  There is no store anywhere in the city of Chicago or even in the Midwest that offers the selection that the Alley does.  I've traveled across the US, and I'll even go as far as to say that there is no store anywhere in the US that compares in size and selection like the Alley.  Many will imitate, and many will fail.

The Alley now has it's own custom tattoo shop along side their piercing studio!  I am totally ready to add to my collection!

The store has had a major major face lift.  The renovation is absolutely beautiful.  I am super excited about the energy, the creativity and hard work that the owner and staff put into the store.  This has been a project that was much discussed before I became a stay at home mom.  I am super bummed that I couldn't be a part of the final result.  The store is well displayed, easy to maneuver, and well stocked.

It's become "cool" to knock and hate the Alley.  All I can say is see it for yourself.  It's a one stop shop.  Now you can get tatted, pierced, and dress yourself from head to toe.  They have over 850 styles of t-shirts, 500 styles of shoes, 200 styles of leathers, the list goes on.

The Alley might not be for everyone, and it is NOT for everyone.  If it were, it would cease to exist.  And there is a need for these types of stores.  It is 2 parts teenage angst and 1 part self discovery.  What is cool to kids today isn't the same as what it was 20 years ago, and it will always change.  I have noticed that many reviewers have stated that they have outgrown what it offers, it was cool when they were 13, but it sucks now etc..   They've forgotten what it feels like to be a teenager.  Sadly, I think that many have become one of "those" people.  The very same ones that looked down their noses at them and did not understand.  This store no longer is for them.  They are now old and "responsible" adults.  My own personal life has changed somewhat, but much remains the same.  I have nothing but fond memories of taking the El to the Alley, meeting up with like minded people, and just feeling as if I had a niche, that I belonged. And I sat outside Punkin Donuts lamenting about their prices just like every generation did..but p.s. when no one else was looking I went back in to buy what I wanted like so many other kids did when no one else was looking.

Expensive?  To some I guess.  If you are looking for cheap alternative gear, go to Walmart, or Hot topic where they sell you the cheaper imported versions.  Don't believe me, compare the quality for yourself.  Everyone has a magic number of what they are willing to spend, and I think that the Alley covers it all. You can buy a 25 cent button, spend $1.00 on incense, buy a leather for $99, or you can indulge and buy yourself $300 boots.  It's all up to what you think that YOU are worth.

It's really a cool place for those who are into that kind of scene.  They do what they do well.

P.S.. Am I wrong to love this store?  It's been a part of my life since I was 13 years old, and I literally did all of my growing up here.  The owner was there when I married, he gave me away in fact.  From marriage, to buying a home, to having a child, the store has been an extension of my family.  It taught me to be who I am today and for that, I will be forever grateful.

I went into the Alley on a whim. I had saw an ad for it online and on a bench a couple times and thought I'd stop in. I wasn't greeted well. Even though I was in all black (mainly because I just love black...not depressed or anything ) I was still just given the meanest scowl from the girl at the front desk. I usually turn around and leave after that but I wanted to look around. The store was a lot bigger than I expected and I was really intirgued...at first then I saw the prices. There was this awesome cardigan (from first glance) that I was looking at and then I read the price tag and it was $90! Not only was it pricey but it was not cashmere or any type of expensive material AND the thread was coming undone in a lot of spots. I asked a sales person if they had another one like it and I just got a laugh from them! I proceeded to look around a bit and found some really interested things...even sik-world stuff. All of it overpriced (sik world does not charge that much for their clothes I know that for a fact...I use to work for them!) and most of it was falling apart. I could go to a mainstream place and get ripped off for less.
The only thing that brings them up to 2 stars is the guy at the hair dye counter. He was helpful. I wanted some hair dye that wasn't manic panic or some other junk that would fade within a day of being in my hair, and he helped me find the right brand.
I don't reccommend this place to anyone who knows good clothes and is actually spending their own money.
