11 reviews for The Adobe Cafe
This past Monday while my girlfriend and I were waiting for our dinner at Fond, we stopped into Adobe Cafe to catch as much of the Phillies game as we could. I snacked on some of their chips and salsa (very good!), we ordered a pitcher of the house margarita (only $10!), and she partook in the wings special at the time - I tried one, and it was pretty tasty -- meaty, crispy on the outside, doused in their house sauce.
I can't speak about the seating area, but what was great about this place was the positions of the televisions, which are set up in such a way that you have a clear, unobstructed view of whatever game they've got on regardless of where you're sitting at the bar. They were good hosts to us during those three innings, and I'd go back again to try their actual menu out for myself. It's also nice to know of another alternative option to the usual sports bars (i.e. - Fox & Hound, 12 Steps Down).

This place was terrible when I ate here. I went with my roommate a few months back and I still recall our terrible experience. They brought the wrong food, then acted weird about bringing what I actually ordered. Once I did get my food, it was blah. I didn't even eat the leftovers. Usually, that's something I really look forward to.
The whole visit was really awkward. And the atmosphere, aforementioned by previous reviewers, was bad. Laughable even. In fact, I'm pretty sure we actually laughed at it, and then wondered why we didn't just stop at the Cantina instead. So my advice on Adobe would be to actually skip it, and go to the Cantina instead.

I was excited to have a new restaurant in south philly when this place opened over a year ago but not excited when I ate here. Here's the good - they have a few okay dishes: chicken mole, seitan tips, and... well that's about it. Overall, their food is very greasy and my dining partner referred to the sauce on her steak tacos as "creepy" (something was very wrong with it). I wouldn't go back unless I was dying to have their "creepy" sauce.
I love Mexican food and this place is pretty A-OK. I first went when it had just opened -- we were 1 of maybe 3 tables occupied. Since then I'm pleased to say it's gotten busier.
The service has been great throughout, except for one time when a waiter was a little pushy re: tequila shots. (Dude, take no for answer, not everyone likes tequila)
The food is pretty standard Mexican fare -- nothing too out-of-the-box is to be found here. The fajitas are great and there is always extra to take home (unless you have a HUGE appetite). The quesadillas are a good small meal.
There is also a sizable variety of non-Mexican food ... burgers, sandwiches, kebobs, salad, as well as many vegetarian options. My only experience with the non-Mex food is the french fried yams. I was very excited about this but unfortunately it did not live up to my expectations. The sweetness of the yams was not complemented by the melted cheese... not sure what kind of cheese it was, maybe that was the problem.
Margaritas, before I forget -- delicious! And pitchers are a good value.
All in all, though, I like the Adobe Cafe. The Passyunk location is preferable, personally, because there are other bars/interesting spots within walking distance.

This place is awful! The atmosphere seems like a tacky child's birthday party, and the food isn't much better. On the plus side, the server was really sweet!
They do have a pretty expansive menu, but I don't think that is such a bad thing. I've gone twice and have gotten the same thing both times--the veggie chimichangas. The first time it was amazingly yummy but the second time wasn't as good (isn't that the way with most things), so when I go back, I will get something different, probably one of the seitan dishes, which someone else wrote about.
As for the drinks, the first time my boyfriend and I went, we got a $10 pitcher of margaritas, and the second time I ordered a "Swedish Fish" (blackhaus, peach schnapps and cranberry juice served in a pint glass) and he got some sort of Jack Lemonade, also served in a pint glass. The drinks are wicked sweet, so good if that's what you're into but not so good if you want, you know, the actual taste of booze.
The servers have been friendly but I get the feeling that this may be the first serving job for many of them.
On a whim, my boyfriend and I decided to give Adobe a try since we LOVE Mexican food and we received a take-out menu on our doorstep a few weeks ago and thought the menu selection looked great. We were two minutes late for happy hour but our waitress honored the discounted margarita special for $10 a pitcher. That made me happy. The chips and salsa were tasty and seemed homemade. We spit a chicken quesadilla and that too was amazingly delicious. My only complaint is that the music playing in the dining room and the loud TV in the bar area left me a little disoriented.

Thank god the Adobe has come to South Philly! I eat at the Rox. location about every other week. This location has the same menu and prices, same happy hour specials, same decor.
There's lots of seating, so you'll never have to wait for a table. Tons of menu items, so everyone will be happy (loads of vegetarian / vegan options like seitan tacos, wild mushroom enchilada, bean and cheese burrito, etc. - so your herbivorous friends won't be stuck to plain salads).
A few things that keep me coming back week after week:
- Steak (or seitan) tips with an amazing jalapeno mayo sauce (easily my favorite item on the menu)
- The best wings (also available in seitain) I've ever had. Sweet like honey but with a kick
- Cheap margaritas!
- Cheap beer!
- Great happy hour specials
- A lot of food for your money, good value
- The awesome service - always quick, friendly, honestly happy to have you there. A real local biz attitude.
This new location is only a couple of weeks old, so give 'em a try and spread the word.

On our way home from a canceled Phillies game, my husband and I stopped here randomly without ever having heard of it. The service was spotty and we probably would not have been happy paying full price for the food and drink, but we caught the Monday night special of two entrees and a pitcher of margaritas for $35 and that made it all worth it. At regular price, our Carne Asada, Beef Chimichangas, and pitcher would have cost $48. The Chimichangas were outstanding. The carne asada was fair. The margaritas were perfect--we expected just mix with a splash of tequila, but were pleasantly surprised with the balance of the drink. Overall this was a fun place to dine with friendly wait staff and good food. We will be sure to try it again.
Too big of a menu? Expecting the adobe (do you mean ADOBO?) seasoning? Ha ha. Newb. Everything you liked about the rox location is still there but in south philly. Service and food is still the same if not better. They just opened so of course no one's in there but that works for me! I'm getting in while the gettin's good. .30 wings for happy hour! hellll yeah. I'm sure this place will blow up once it gets on philebrity.

I didn't think the food was all that good. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't that yummy. The sangria we had was kinda watery and didn't have any fruit in it. The server was also pretty clueless.
I hope the popularity picks up soon, because when i was there it was pretty empty (Friday night). It's such a big place that when its not packed it looks absolutely cavernous (empty).
