Excellent place for Lindy Hop. The classes are fun and the instructors are great. I love that they post review videos on YouTube. It's very easy to forget a pattern if you don't get to practice between classes.
One of the highlights was performing with my class at one of their Open House events. A lot of work and practice, but tons of fun. -

DJ music, huge floor, fair price, tons of good dancers and awesome classes for any level of dancers. Sometimes there are some famous guest instructors.

This venue is great! Class series start on the first Thursday of the month, and each time it is something worth picking up. The price for dance admission is $8 ($6 for students) for a whopping 3 hours of dancing. $15 with classes per drop in; discounts are offered for preregisters. Volunteering for entry is also available.
The dance floor is usually well maintained, with a good amount of polish on the ballroom styled dance floor. It can accommodate about 200 dancers comfortably.
Dancer age is averaged in the early twenties, so it is definitely one of the younger crowd. Dance level averages about six months to a year of dance experience, but there are definitely a good amount of beginners trying out the venue at the beginning of the month. Great atmosphere too. Breath mints/ candies / name tags/ water is provided for everyone, but food and alcoholic drinks aren't allowed.
The music can be tricky depending on the DJ. Most of the music comes from old artists like Count Basie, Sydney Bechet, Louis Jordan, and other songs at around 150 beats per minute. Don't expect any fast or rockabily music, but do expect some blues-inspired music.
As of now, classes are taught in three different levels, with an additional "Special Extensions" class, which is a themed class. Classes are taught very well, but the biggest complaint is that the level of dancers aren't monitored in the correct class level. No partner is required, and couples do a great job in participating in rotations throughout class.
A birthday jam is done for new dancers as well as peoples' birthdays, where dancers are constantly trying to steal a moment to dance with the birthday guy or girl.
I've been to the 9:20 for over a year, and I have always enjoyed the dancing on most of the nights. This venue keeps the lindy community strong, as it does a great job in keeping most of the dancers around for a while. -

I have been taking lessons and attending dances at the 9:20 special for about 6 months now and I've been extremely happy with my experience there.
First, the teaching staff is fantastic. They are very friendly, so classes are comfortable. More importantly, everyone I've taken lessons from has been both an excellent dancer and an effective teacher. The 9:20 has been a great place to start dancing and to continue to improve my technique and increase my dance vocabulary.
As a social dance venue, the 9:20 is one of my favorites in the city. The ballroom is huge, so there is usually more space than other places. The crowd is also very friendly, so dancers of all levels can enjoy themselves. They don't have live music as often as I might like, but hey, no one is perfect!
Cliffnotes of this rambling review: the 9:20 is an excellent place to dance and to take Lindy lessons! -

Best place in the San Francisco for beginners to learn to Swing/Lindy Hop and for advanced Dancers to learn and improve their skills. They offer high-quality professional classes at all levels (including Advanced). The dance afterwards is always about mid-tempo - which is friendly to beginners - and there's a very spacious dance floor so there's enough room for intermediate/advanced dancers to do Swing-outs, traveling moves, and other interesting moves. Also, it's very well attended - there's always a good crowd with dancers from all levels. Also, frequent performances and announcements about other Swing events in the Bay area make this a central place for the Swing Scene in SF. It's my favorite place to Lindy Hop in the city.

San Francisco, CA
I went to 9:20 on Thursday, after months of frequenting Verdi's Tuesday Night Jump. I had heard good things, and it did not disappoint.
There was a reasonably-sized crowd, and the dance floor was nice and big - more than enough room to get a good charleston going, which is always key at a swing night. There was no shortage of partners, and a good balance of leaders and followers, including a few female leads (yay!). Me? I swing both ways. (Okay, there were a few of us girls there trying to work on our leads and we were all happy to help each other out.)
I noticed that the partners I danced with here all seemed to be pretty good, with only a couple of leads that I couldn't quite intuit properly. For sure the crowd is a mixed bag - by the way, to the dude who told my friend to "take a lesson and come back" - you're a dick. All levels are welcome here, just watch someone dance for a minute instead of checking out their ass if you care about proficiency!
The only downside is that there's no live music. It's all iPod based or something. Most of the songs are around the same tempo, which isn't necessarily a particularly good or bad thing (unless you're dying to show off your balboa skills or something). They do the birthday circle here, which I support. (All the dancers form a ring, and if it's a special occasion for you, you go in the center of the circle and continuously switch out partners.)
Oh, and I don't think they have a bar here, which may be a bit of a downer to some people. They do have water coolers, though, which is muy importante. -
Review from Bert M.
In case you haven't been following along, I was NOT cool in high school. Or college. Or anytime thereafter... until I moved to San Francisco about a decade ago and found swing dancing.
Then, I became an effing rockstar. I have no idea how it happened, but suddenly, I knew the "IN crowd". I began dying my hair unnatural colors and wearing snakeskin pants. People whom I didn't remember knew my name and wanted to dance with me. Okay... maybe that was the pants, but STILL. You see my point.
I've not been to the 9:20 Special in years. Life keeps moving along, and we go with its steady flow of change. (Cue "Breakfast Club" final scene.) Dude. So deep.
But, the fact remains, at the 9:20, I was Somebody. The staff there always made me feel special. Each dance was a three minute love affair with a stranger. And then, the strangers became close friends. And, while we rarely dance anymore, we're all still connected. That's the best reason I've ever had to give a business 5 Stars.
Thank you 9:20 Special for my entire social circle, and for my 10 minutes of fame.
I still plan to stop into the 9:20 again when I visit San Francisco. Look for me. If you're lucky, I'll give you my autograph and let you take a photo for your restaurant wall. -

If you're looking for a classy place to learn Lindy Hop, the 9:20 Special is exactly what you're looking for. It's run by wonderful, friendly people, and dancers of all experience levels are out on the floor every Thursday.
The classes are generally taught by a core group of San Francisco greats (including some famous (or infamous? I keed.) transplants from the east coast), and they frequently invite guest instructors and performers from all over the world!
There's no bar, and this isn't the type of place with a tiny dance floor where you'll get kicked in the shins -- unless Kim Nalley's on stage, then all bets are off 'cause it'll be PACKED. It's located in the Russian Cultural Center in lower Pac Heights, and the ballroom is absolutely beautiful. With a brand-spanking-new dance floor -- replaced just a few months ago! -- you'll be spinning and sliding to your heart's content. Classes are held both in the grand ballroom and a smaller room off to the side.
I took my beginner classes at The 9:20, and some of my instructors were just visiting from other venues around the city...so I know those other venues also have great instructors. But The 9:20 really does have a certain feel to it that seems more inviting to the beginner. Lots of space, lots of people, lots of smart and empathetic instructors, and really just a big family vibe around the place. And just to put the cherry on top, the instructors even shoot class-review videos every week, so you can watch and practice at home. HOW GREAT IS THAT?! -
Review from Aathi K.
Berkeley, CA
I LOVE this place. There are many places in the bay area to get your dancing fix, especially to live music and with a bar and food service. However this is the place I most feel at home. Kirk and Iris who run the place have set a friendly welcoming tone for this place, that permeates through the volunteers to all the dancers that come here. There is always a friendly face at the door to welcome you and a friendly face to say good night. This alone is enough to make you want to go back. It feels like a second home!
Learning: After trying out a few drop-in beginner classes in east coast swing at Lindy on Sproul, Berkeley and Lindy in the Park (which are both really fun venues as well), I wanted a progressive series in Lindy-hop. I went to the 920-special on recommendation from other dancers and was not disappointed. There are 4 classes on every dance evening for dancers at different points along the learning curve. Many of the basics are kept in constant rotation, while different teachers bring in different things they like for the special-extension classes. So the learning never stopped for me! In addition to the teachers being all really good, friendly and accessible, they also have class review videos on their web-site which I found to be immensely helpful! Since students are encouraged to wear name tags during classes, you get to know fellow-dancers fast and will not feel shy about asking them to dance will feel brave to try out your newly learnt moves!
Dancing: The music is DJed and in general, the music is slower and beginner friendly earlier in the evening, picks up pace in between and winds down into some lindy-blues by the end. The floor is fantastically maintained and has nice ballroom feel with plenty of chairs and tables around the floor for people to hang out. The one thing that I really admire about the 920special and the lindy-hop cultural scene in general is that girls feel just as empowered to ask someone to dance as guys. And what gets even better is that traditional gender roles for guys as leads and girls as follows has been tossed out the door. This sets up an super-friendly atmosphere in which I sense that people feel liberated into expressing themselves in an unfettered fun manner. The place regularly attracts the best dancers in the bay area and the 'traveling-lindyhoppers' from around the world. So even when I'm not dancing I feel entertained and wowed.
Special moments: There are two moments in any evening of 920 special that I always look forward to. One is Jamtime when the special people - birthdays, first-timers, out of towners - are placed in the middle of the circle and get to dance with as many people as possible in one song. I love watching the different ways in which people steal a dancer from another! Another is a line dance, the shim sham of Frankie Manning where in one song one pays tribute to the legends of the dance and also jazz it up. Both of these bring out a strong community sense which increase this sense of home I mentioned earlier. And from time to time, there are special performances from different groups, or traveling instructors that expand my mind in the artistry of lindy.
Minuses: The ventilation is not the best and I tend to heat up very quickly; this seems to be a general problem in all the dance venues I have been to. I sometimes wish there were a bar where my non-dancing friends could lounge, and watch the dancers. But any friend who has been lindy-curious has never been disappointed in just watching the dancers and getting a dance or two with the friendly dancers at the 920.
In conclusion, if you are even remotely lindy-curious, this is the place to go to! Take advantage of the early-bird registration packages! And if you want to get in for free, enquire about volunteering opportunities. -

The 920 Special is a long-running Thursday night swing dance venue held inside the Russian Center ballroom. The crew that runs the venue are very friendly and provide a fun non-alcoholic environment for mixed ages. You don't need a partner to attend, since the instructors will rotate you with other students.
I was once partnered with a newbie student who was very intense about learning to swing, to the point of mumbling under her breath. She wore glasses, had very long hair and had mangled jacked-up teeth which her lips couldn't cover. Let's call her Jaws. Jaws also had sweating issues. She profusely sweated everywhere: her face, her back, her shoulders, her hands. Even her glasses were steaming up with all the sweat and heat she was radiating.
The instructors demonstrate in the middle of the large ballroom a sequence of dance steps, then break down each move thoroughly for students to follow. Holding my profusely perspiring partner's hand, I easily led her hand above her head into an INSIDE TURN. I'm sure she was impressed at being with such an accomplished dancer--such as myself. As she quickly twirled, her long ponytail lifted off her sweat-laden back, gained momentum as it silently whipped through the air. Then--WHACK!--STRUCK ME IN THE FACE! Once more, HER SMELLY-ASS-PONYTAIL-FULL-OF-SWEAT STRUCK ME IN THE FACE!
It felt like a SOAKED MOP had slapped me. Oblivious to the mortifying moist melee that just occurred, Jaws spun away to another partner. I was speechless, as I peeled a few wet strands of her hair off my face.
However, a good dancer--such as myself--owns up when a dance goes haywire. The LEADS (usually the guy) has to take some responsibility for the FOLLOWER (usually the gal), which includes: asking her to dance, keeping pace with the music, keeping the dance interesting, maintaining eye contact, being cautious of not bumping or slipping on anything, walking her off the dance floor and saying thank you. Being MATURE and not blaming others comes with the territory. I concluded that it was my fault for the ponytail pummeling, because MAYBE if I was more experienced it could have been avoided; or MAYBE it was meant to teach me humility and to not make fun of people.
Eventually Jaws rotated throughout the entire class until we were partnered again. All is forgiven. She was picking up the dance rather easily. Her hips swiveled and her rock steps were confident. It's just an unfair law that gals advance more quickly in swing dancing than guys. With elbow slightly bent, I raised her hand above her head leading her into the INSIDE TURN we learned earlier. Resigned to the predictable ponytail, I defensively closed my eyes as she twirled passed me BUT then my elbow INVOLUNTARILY flinched and--BAMMM!--PUNCHED her in the FACE!! I opened my eyes to see her doubled-over! I was ASTONISHED that this faux-pas could happen--to a great dancer such as myself.
I consoled her, "Are you okay?" ( BHWAHAHAHAHAHA! Take that BEEYYATTCH! )
I apologized, "I'm sooo sorry" ( BHWAHAHAHAHAHA! I couldn't stop grinning! )
Beginning and Intermediate classes start around 7pm, with the social dancing at 9:20pm and running past midnight. Trust me, there really are a lot of FRIENDLY and GOOD dancers at the 920. -

The 9:20 Special has been one of the longest running swing dances in the Bay Area. It's one of my favorite places to dance in San Francisco.
How could you say no to a big mirror ball, a huge dance floor, lots of fun dancers, and a great lineup of instructors & DJ's? Check out their calendar to see who's teaching + spinning.

Thursday, 7:20PM.
SF jewel for activities. I'm bummed I didn't discover 9:20 until recently. Held at the Russian Cultural Center, this is swing dancing at its jovial best.
You should know, usually:
*Intermediate lessons at 7:20PM
*Separate intermediate and beginning lessons at 8:20PM
*Dance the night away to a DJ or LIVE BAND 9:20-midnight
*It's a medical fact that swing dancing can uplight spirits and prolong life
**Don't know if there's research to support this but I've got anecdotal
evidence so don't sue me AMA
Did ya notice?
+Quirky, friendly, AWESOME staff
*They have a rotation of amazing dancers that come teach
+Fun, safe atmosphere
*Amiable folks from different backgrounds and ages convening for
good ol' wholesome dancing
+Clean and spacious rooms (especially the big ballroom)
*Well kept
*The big ballroom has newly installed flooring, woot!
And then?
Funny instructors. Learning cool moves. Meet new people. G-g-g-go get your GROOVE on! -

This place just seems to be getting better and better. Usually the music is DJ'd, but last night they had Kim Nalley and a 6-piece band. The place was packed, but arranged to maximize the floor space and keep the space danceable. Kim was excellent, and the dancers were lots of fun (many visitors in town for the SF Lindy Exchange).
9:20 has a FREE open house October 1st, always popular. If you haven't visited before, that would be a great time to do it. Free Lessons!Listed in: Dancing in the Bay Area

Review from Bill B.
The Russian Center serves as the venue for the excellent 9:20 Special swing dances. They focus on Lindy/East Coast swing. The instructors I had last night were great, keeping the lesson fun, entertaining, and progressing at a pace that managed to work well for both absolute beginners and for intermediate dancers.
The crowd was friendly and included a lot of very good dancers. I got asked to dance several times by attractive and talented women, and I never got turned down when making my own invitations. (I must be doing something right, so I'm definitely going back!)
If you need a break, there's a balcony from which you can enjoy the music and just watch the crowd.
The event was pretty crowded so the dance floor--which is the size of a HS gymnasium--was packed, making dancing slightly challenging at times. However, last night was a free event, so it may not be as crowded most nights.
Trivia: The Lindy hop is popularly thought to get its name from famed aviator Charles Lindbergh, nicknamed "Lucky Lindy" in 1926. After Lindberg's solo non-stop flight from New York to Paris in which he "hopped" the Atlantic, Shorty George Snowden was dancing in a marathon contest at the Manhattan Casino in Harlem when a reporter asked him what dance he was doing. The headlines in the newspapers had stated "Lindy Hops the Atlantic", so he told the reporter, "I'm doing the Lindy hop."Listed in: ZZ Top 10 list

This is my old stomping grounds before I moved to suburbia. And boy do I miss it!
Let me count the ways...
- Talented instructors
- Great floor
- Affordable price for many hours of dancing
- Comfortable, friendly atmosphere
- Nice mix of music
- Generally easy parking (I rarely park more than a couple blocks away, and usually much closer if I get there early)
- Delicious and cheap food nearby (the Thai place... yum!)
If you're into lindy hop and live in or near SF, go to the 9:20. If you love swingin' tunes, go to the 9:20. If you've been meaning to get off your ass and learn how to dance / get a new hobby / get some exercise / meet some new people / get out of the house, go to the 9:20.

It was a fun thing to do. I'd recommend signing up with a few friends if you are like me - Lindy hop wasn't my thing. I went for fun.
You will change dance partners all night which is good but be prepared to get paired with guys who have very sweaty hands and everything that goes with sweaty hands :P -

By far the friendliest staff, the coolest dancers and beautiful ballrooms to have a lindy hop dance. The 9:20 Special continues it's more than 10 year run as a place where everyone feels welcome, some of the most talented teachers in the country and terrific music.
The beautiful Russian Center sets the stage for an evening of classes, fun and good people. Definitely try it if you are a beginner dancer. If you are a pro, the sweet BRAND NEW dance floor will have you bouncin' all night. -

As far as I know, I came here with a few friends at the wrong time.
However, my experience with this venue was very sub par.
The DJ played quiet, slow music. This would have been fine, but this continued all night. Also, the dancers were sparce, and not very energetic, but I actually blame this on the music.
All in all, I was disappointed. -

Fantastic space, good to excellent music (I find myself sitting to rest rather than because I don't like the song... a rarity), superb teachers, and one of the most fun and encouraging environment I've found.
I'm moving to Dallas and I would steal the entire venue and all the dancers to take with me if I could. -

I love this place. Where else can you walk into a building that from the outside looks like a Y but a few steps up and you enter into an old world ballroom that's big, beautiful, and transports you back in time.
In addition to that, 920 hires the best DJs in the world on a weekly basis, can teach anyone to dance, and always keeps the friendly vibe the priority.
Without a doubt, my favorite swing place in town. -
Review from Sarah C.
I came here yesterday night for a field trip with the swing class I am taking at city college. I was hesitant to come since it was at 9.30pm after a 6-8pm class but it ended up being a lot of fun. There was other young people there from the swing class at Berkeley. One person was really rude but everyone else was really nice.
They provide water. I also like how there is good lighting here and there is more room to dance without hitting someone. I like here a lot more than the Verdi club. It is also in a better neighborhood. -

Yay 9:20!! I've never had any dance lessons before, but after a few months of beginner classes at the 9:20 I'm having a Blast on the dance floor (which is a huge, gorgeous ball-room that seems to normally get around maybe 100 dancers every Thursday night.)
The instructors have all been so good- they seem to really be having fun teaching and are great about making sure everyone gets each step before moving on. They have multiple levels of classes, and they post brief little videos of each class so you can review what you learned on your own, or catch up if (heaven forbid!) you miss a week.
If you already know how to swing dance and just want to come to the social dance at 9:20, you will find some of the friendliest dancers here. From the greeters to the instructors to the whole community on the floor, it's just a sweet, open, super-fun atmosphere.
Five stars for not being at a bar, for providing mints and buckets of water for everyone, and for starting fairly early in the evening for those of us who turn into pumpkins by midnight!
Also, they offer a discount if you buy a month's worth of lessons in advance, which is an awesome deal. See you there! :) -

Amazing dance floor! Dancing can be super intimidating (especially if you're new), but it's seriously the BEST way to meet people... I always tell my guy cousins and friends, if they're looking to meet chicks, learn how to dance. Instant sex appeal! No better place to practice your moves then the 920 Special.

This is my favorite place to dance. It has an old-style ballroom with a fantastic dance floor with plenty of room to move. Seating is available for onlookers but you won't want to sit long! Take the classes; there are several different levels to choose from. DJ's have a wide range of music: something for everyone. Friendly atmosphere; friendly people. Don't miss the annual Open House; it's FREE.

By far my one of my favorite, if not my favorite, place to dance. The space, the Russian Center or Tursk Building, is spacious. The instructors are top notch and the deejays are awesome. I absolutely love this place. The owners and staff are really friendly. They are there to make sure you have a great time. And they have candy. :P Honestly, I don't know what else to add that hasn't been said before. I just absolutely love dancing here. It's a great place to meet new people, a great atmosphere to dance in, and a great place to hang out while listening to good music and dance with people of all ages and levels. And there are student discounts too. Come and dance at the 9:20!

I've been going to the 9:20 Special since it opened. I always know that I can count on a great selection of music, a really warm greeting and some very fun dances. The floor here is perfect for dancing and there's plenty of room to do a real swing out. It's an especially great place for beginning and intermediate dancers significantly because their classes and teachers are excellent -- but you'll still find old timers like me haunting the joint looking to get our fix from the 9:20's fabulous DJs. Visitors from the around the world always make a stop here with good reason. And when there's a special event look out! Everyone comes by and it becomes an amazing place for dancing, watching, listening, and remembering that partner dancing and jazz are ours for life.

Fabulous. Good lord. I used to drive up from Menlo Park all the time for this.
Huge crowds (100+), lots of dancers, everyone is usually really excited and a little dressed up, lots of really good lindy hoppers and at the same time the atmosphere is very friendly and welcoming. If you love swing dancing and live even remotely close to SF -- or if you've always wanted to check it out -- then you must check out the 9:20 Special. Lindy in the Park on Sundays too. -

this is a fun place to take Beginner lessons for Lindy Hop!
the instructors are friendly and go at a good pace. the classes are a bit crowded but they do a pretty good job of keeping us from bumping into each other. they have you rotate partners which is nice too so you can help each other out.
the ballroom is open right after the beginning class for you to practice too :)
