Thalassa is a good place if you're young or young at heart. There are good drinks, plenty of pool tables, and a happenin' crowd. The ambiance is lively, the drinks are flowin', and there's always a good time to be had.
My girlfriend loves this place. She's a huge fan of the reasonably priced drinks and the abundant amount of pool tables available for rent.
Like with most places in Berkeley, this place is in a busy location and parking is nearly impossible to find in the small lot. Street parking isn't readily available, but if you keep at it, you should find some success.
Tahlassa has and always will be a stop whenever we barcrawl in Berks. I'm definitely a fan!
Members only drinks get you where you need to go in the evening!
The first bar I hit up over at the East Bay and I must say that it was a dope place to experience for a 1st timer to the area. Music is dope, the bartenders are dope considering with how many people they are working to serve so tip your bartenders well.
Hella pool tables in the joint, but didnt get time to play any games since we were pretty drunk. Nice watchin cats hustle each other in the backyard lookin patio. Now that I think about it, this place is pretty huge pool hall/bar.
I will reiterate that the Members Only drinks are freakin delicious and get the job the done. Most definitely gonna wanna peep this place again in the future.
I like this place...
Pool tables...good bartenders...good music...its pretty simple.
They also allow you to bring in games...played a few mean rounds of uno here.
Suggestion: order the "mama's koolaid"...(no I'm not kidding that is the name of the drink). By the time I left the bar I had everyone ordering them.
Minus a star for taking wu-tang and the clash off the jukebox.

Every time I come here , I roll up to the door and the exchange between me and the bouncer is as follows:
Me: *fishes out I.D. from massive purse and hands to bouncer*
Bouncer: *looks at ID, looks at I.D., looks at me*
Me: *takes off glasses*
Bouncer: *looks at me, looks at I.D., looks back at me*
Me: Yes, I really am that old. I know it must be odd to have someone here who is really that old.
*gets I.D. back and enters bar*
Thalassa is a fun place. I would almost always walk right past it if it weren't for the neon Martini glass in the window. I have noticed that no matter what day I go in, or if it is busy or somewhat slow it is always a bit noisy. They have a fabulous pool hall. But they do make a tasty drink. I was a big fan of the John & Kate + Rum.
I always have to remind my self that it "is" a college bar. Not a bad college bar, but a college bar nonetheless. Interesting drink specials = not so interesting drunk people in their early 20's. Hot guys = wow you're hot but way young and your quoting what your Philosophy professor said. Do you have a pic of your older, older brother? Maybe your dad?
Damn...maybe I am too old to be here. * walks to bar and gets another drink*
Thalassa is a destination man cave kinda spot.
Super chill areas for lounging, good atmosphere at the bar (I like all the aquariums),. It was hard to get a pool table even though they were at least 12 of them. The wait was 45 minutes for a Friday night.
There is a pool table outside on their patio and this was super chill in Berkeley's perfect weather. It's a good spot to just hung out at and bs. (http://www.yelp.com/bi...)
Even though it's semi near the campus, I wouldn't say it's frat boy ish. The crowd has a wide demographic that I'd say fully represents Berkeley's eclectic mix.
BTW Thalassa is a Greek sea goddess.
Really...it depends on what you're coming here for. Drinks, play pool, dance, games or just hang out.
Drinks - Pretty ok, however, It tends to get rather crowded around that area
Pool - the wait to get a table might take 15 minutes to an hour depending on what day of week you come
Dance - depending on how drunk people are, they might start to dance on the very small platform...be careful of elbows and drinks spilling
Games - always open
Hang out - lots of lounging areas to sit in (while waiting for a pool table)
Tips: Ladies, instead of waiting to use the one stall bathroom facing the bar, go behind the wall to the one facing the pool tables. No line, more stalls, cleaner too
Nice place to hang out with friends. specially if you are a pool fan.
two things that I would improve about it:
1) clear instructions on how to proceed in getting a table, to avoid people just going to empty tables and wondering what to do. (FYI, you need to put down your name at the table beside the bar and get a beeper that will beep when your table is ready)
2) the tables are a little to close to each other, so people have to wait for other players at neighbor tables from time to time, give them a little bit more space and it'll be perfect.
Most certainly one of my favorite East bay spots.
It's casual without being sleazy. It's hip without being hipster-y.
The booze is fairly cheap and the beers on tap are great! They have Hefewizen, Guinness, Newcastle, Anchor Steam, fat tire....a ton of great beer! The mixed drinks are good for the price and middle of the road in strength.
The music is pleasantly eclectic if a bit loud. Not yelling loud, but "please speak up" loud.
I'm not sure if the rates for pool tables are good, but I know I've never had to wait for one!
The clientèle are young with a low percentage of douchebags/idiot shrieking girls. It's a great date spot that's not too fussy.
This is one of the place in Berkeley where you don't feel like you are in a pub, but a bar. Its might be a trivial distinction for some, but its very important, when deciding where to go at night.
The music is loud (which can be good or bad, depending on what you're looking for) and is one place I would feel comfortable ordering mixed drinks/cocktails. Ordered a couple of AMFs here for me and a fellow yelp-er, which I thought were about average but were a wee bit "too much" for her. The place is pretty huge and give you a variety of seating options, from the bar to tables to couches to lounge on.
Thalass is also one of the few walkable places in Berkeley which give you access to a large group of pool tables (they claim they have the most in the East Bay, about 23 tables). There is usually a fairly long wait for them (especially during peak hours), but its a fun activity to do, especially after having a couple of drinks.
A staple of Berkeley nightlife, Thalassa is a must try. It maybe seem a little dingy, but it has more energy and buzz than the nearby seemingly more laid back Beta Lounge.
I really dig the underwater theme here. It's one of the few places in Berkeley where you get the sense that someone thought about interior design. There are also quite a bunch of tables scattered around, I've never had trouble acquiring seating here. We did have to cram six people on four chairs around one tiny little round table once, but make lemonade from your lemons and alternate the genders.
I really like the lighting here. It's dim enough to be uninhibiting (actually, maybe that's the alcohol talking) but not so much that you can't see people's faces. Also nice is the fact that if you need to calm down and have a glass of water, you can just grab a cup at the end of the bar instead of waiting for a bartender. A little bird told me once that they even have root beer, but god forbid I ever have something nonalcoholic at a bar. Gotta keep it real, right?
All in all, probably my favorite bar in Berkeley.
I've never been disappointed by the playlist and vibe here. I've also had three AMF's here in one night after having six previous drinks...
I'd guess the playlist is made by an indie-electro-hipster-guy. It's loud, but not loud enough to drown out a conversation. It's also darkly lit with mood lighting so your group can have fun without people overhearing you.
First time around: Idioteque by Radiohead
Second time: Lebanese Blonde by Thievery Corporation
*Insert-I-don't-really-remember-times-here*
Last night: Crips by Ratatat
Drinks are whatever nothing-too-special in my opinion. I just come here for the kicks because it's group friendly if you can score a table or some chairs.
3.5 stars.
I can see why pool junkies would go nuts over Thalassa, but it's not somewhere I'd have a drink often although it is in a convenient location along with the rest of the bars on Shattuck. The decorations are tiki/mermaid-y, kinda tacky but at least the bathroom is decently clean minus the wait and potential to be hit by the door opening when you're crowded in the corner waiting.
I like their cheap drink specials for $6. Beer is usually my choice of drink, but once in awhile I'll crave a sweet cocktail. C'mon, you do, too. After beer-ing it up at Beckett's, my friends came by here. I tried the Pucker Up special that was $6--midori, sour apple pucker, 7-up. I was sipping quite happily. They do have good beers on tap though.
This place is good for groups if you can find a table before the peak hours. Also, you can order a pizza from Extreme Pizza across the street. Just ask one of the bartenders, they'll give you a menu, order a giant one to share with a big group, and it'll come right to you. So that's the only option they have for food. Oh, and randomly, bags of chips like Cheetos, Lays, etc. We asked for a few because we were so hungry.
Decided it was time to revisit this bar... so, this past Thursday night, I found my way here again. Suffice it to say that, despite living in Fremont/UC, I believe this will remain my favorite "local" bar (ahead of the local bars I actually have). I'll be back soon.

Too loud here dangit!
And the decorations are somewhat tacky.
But I shall def return here.
Second to Beckett's but still a place to go for drinks and chillin' with the peeps.
AMF was good per usual.
Thanks Andrew M... Thank you.
Thalassa is a decent hangout with decent drinks. If you want a hip bar or bangin' club, don't come around here. But if you want to play a game of pool or a chill location to drink with some friends, Thalassa has you covered. The decor is that of a comfortable, lived in, old tiki bar - slowly mutated over the years into something a little less ostentatious.
The big draw is the pool hall: there's lots of space, lots of tables, and they're all maintained well enough. But the reason this place gets high marks in my book is something not a lot of people make use of or acknowledge in other reviews: the indoor shuffleboard close to the front door. It's electronic score keeping looks like it busted decades ago, but it's just as fun to keep score in your head and the surface is still even and level. There's only one table, but it's enough to make Thalassa memorable and unique.
My Shattuck bar-crawls always end here. Who would ever want to leave? Plenty of pool tables, regular tables, good mood lighting, strong drinks.
The place is pretty big, so you shouldn't have much trouble finding a corner for your group. If you want a pool table, there's a bit of a wait, but securing one makes for great times. Although, you try playing pool after having a few white Russians.
I'm told I had three AMF's here in the final leg of my 21st birthday. I sure don't remember there being 3, but my experiences here have been tempered by this fact. Enjoy!
Finally a real bar! After a disappointing outing at Kip's for my 21st (see my review for Kip's) I came here the next night and last night and met up with Charles L. and his crew. We went through a few rounds at one of the group tables before moving onto the pool hall in the back. Granted I haven't been to many bars but so far Thalassa has become my favorite place to hang.
For one, its CLEAN, unlike the aforementioned Kip's, and the wood floors and decor make for a comfortable and laid back hangout spot. Secondly, the bartenders actually knew what they were doing and didn't say "What?" or "huh?" when I asked for a Singapore Sling (my new favorite cocktail) or a Daiquiri.
Two: the alcohol they use is decent quality, so the drinks are actually pleasing to drink and not harsh and you don't wake up the next morning feeling like regret (which is what happens at Kip's).
Third: This goes hand in hand with the last point: fresh lime juice. It was a very pleasant surprise to see the bartender squeeze fresh limes for the Daiquiri I ordered, which made for a very nice cocktail. While you might think this is a silly detail, go try making a daiquiri or any drink with bottled lime juice and you'll no doubt get the satisfaction of having something that tastes like marinade rather than a cocktail.
All in all, this place is clean, the drinks are good and the atmosphere is kickin', which is all you could really ask for in a bar.
My friends and I have visited Thalassa so many times that as soon as we get to the front door, it's like clockwork. ID at the front door, credit card deposit for pool balls and chalk with the hostess, order a round of the drink special, sex-on-the-beach or pear cider and proceed to the assigned table. I think the best table in the house is the one near the window with the long couch. It's great for big groups. Pool rates are reasonable. It's only $5 before 8:00. On weekends, it's $12 per hour and they charge by 10 minute increments. It's usually pretty crowded on the weekends. It's a different story during the day; It's the geriatric club of billiards enthusiasts. Street parking is very limited and we usually have to circle a 2 block radius before landing a spot. Although, downtown Berkeley BART is conveniently 3-4 blocks down. Thalassa never disappoints, just be there.
3 1/2 stars, reminds me of the Great Entertainer when GE was the spot to be back in late 90s in SF
walking in you got the huge bar feel walking farther in and to the left you got the pool tables and in the far back is a patio for smoking even though the signs specifically state not too haha everyone does haha.
good spot to chill with your friends if you can get a table if not two it would be perfect but on a friday nite is seems almost impossible though, moderately priced alcohol some eye candy depends on the nite you go out.
bar ***
pool tables **** several but on a busy nite good luck getting a table
ambiance *** its a bar/pool hall/patio
service $$
When this place isn't an absolute friggin mob scene, it can be pretty cool to hang out at. I thought that it might be hoppin last night, given that school is starting soon (today?) at Cal. Wrong.
Last night we got treated to manageable noise levels, non-exorbitantly-priced cocktails, and a good few games of pool. For me, the total of one cocktail (get the Hairy Sunshine, it's only $4 and has probably 2+ shots of alcohol in it) and a game of pool, split with a friend, ended up only being $7.50. Not bad for 2 hours at the place.
Whenever I find the energy within to walk down to Shattuck, the ambience makes it so worth the trip. Thalassa gets a bunch of stars for just being a nice change from the typical college bar on Southside.
+ Under the Sea theme
+ good, non fratty crowd
+ plenty of seats
+ decent drink list, classier variety than campus bars
- decorations hanging near the stools on the platform by the bar are so dusty it falls into my drink
The only drawback is that it seems louder than usual, so it's harder to actually converse with your group... which is the only thing to do here if you don't play pool regularly.
In spite of my grudge against the owner for taking over The King's X on Piedmont Avenue and canning all of the long time bartenders and turning my favorite dirty, upscale-sleazy haunt into a pineapple wonderland...Thalassa is a pretty friggin' cool joint.
Nicely played underwater/Tiki-esque theme...minus the cheese factor. Think "Grunge-Tiki," if you will. A full bar with over a dozen beers on tap, as well as thoughtful non-alcoholic selections like Stewart's Root Beer.
Thalassa also has a smoking-friendly patio out back if you're so inclined, a gaggle of regulation-sized pool tables by the hour (with early-bird rates!) if you're interested in chalking up your cue, several inconspicuous television sets if you're interested in catching part of a game, and a pretty bitchin' selection of pinball machines, if you're interested in flaring your tendonitis.
Service at the bar on my most recent visit was excellent - we were off to a good start as soon as the bartender asked which kind of tequila I wanted in my margarita.
Solid.
Thalassa is apparently still holding out on hanging an actual sign out front, so look for the orange exterior with fishing nets and a neon martini glass hanging inside the darkly tinted windows out front.
what i like:
beer selection on tap
beer to cocktails ratio
billiard tables
spaciousness
what i don't like:
uncomfortable noise level
long ass restroom line
Thalasssa hasn't made much of a lasting impression on me, but there are many nights ahead...
What really won me over for life are those fantastic plastic toys they hang over the edge of your drink. It's like getting a Happy Meal, except alcohol-style. I'm starting a collection. So far I have two mermaids and an elephant. I don't know why the elephant is there, because elephants aren't generally found in the ocean. But it's cute nonetheless. Does anyone want to trade with me? Hey, how about we meet at Thalassa?
Also try the Country Peach Tea cocktail special on Thursdays. This is a great place to play pool and not feel judged, especially when you're a total noob at pool, like me.
I like Thalassa alot, and I don't even play pool! For me Thalassa is a perfect place to get together with a small or large amount of friends and hang out, listen to good music, and drink! The bartenders have always been friendly, and drinks are relatively cheap. I think a Manhattan was $5?? Amazing! So far I haven't had any real issues with this place, and I've been here...oh about....a gazzilian times. The one thing I might ask for is room for a dance floor :) I'm not suggesting a club environment but just a little space to shake my thing. (I don't think people appreciate it when I bump into them while shaking my hips on my fictional dance floor).
The only thing I hear that people don't like about Thalassa is that it can be a High School reunion, especially for the folks who went to Berkeley High, but I don't mind seeing old faces at all. So keep in mind if you're from Berkeley you're pretty much guaranteed you'll see someone you know. Overall this place is pretty cool-Spacious, good bartenders, friendly bouncers, good music, outside patio for the smokers, plenty of pool tables aaaand pretty cheap drinks!
For all the hullabaloo over Beta Lounge, I cannot quite grasp its appeal. Beta Lounge is small, clean, and full of students, but it lacks the oomph that it tries to by create playing weird anime on its televisions. Just a short walk away sits Thalassa, which is decidedly more ghetto, but to me, DOES have that oomph.
Why? For starters, Thalassa is HUGE and spacious. Its ocean theme means plush shell-shaped couches, blowfish lamps, and sea murals. There is even a little arcade with pinball machines and other arcade games. Too bad they don't have DDR, huh?
My favorite feature is the room of numerous pool tables...each for a very reasonable price of $10/hour, no mandatory rental time. Even though I suck, I love me a game of stripes and solids.
Thalassa is also open in the afternoon, which means you can walk in, sit on the comfy couches, and chat with friends--there's no cover charge, like in most of Berkeley.
Now for the sad part: there is music...but NO DANCE FLOOR. Oh snap!
A decent enough bar if you enjoy playing pool. I like pool well enough, but it was too expensive, so I decided to bag it. The drinks were inexpensive and not bad, and it was a good place to hang out with a large group of people and get some drinks and snacks. This place had a bit more of a college student vibe than I cared for, and I disliked that I was asked for my ID multiple times by the suspicious people working at the bar. The indoors is clean and has good lighting from all the windows during the day hours. It's better to come here during daylight for that reason, as well as the fact that the non-pool areas get so busy at night that it gets extremely loud and almost like a mosh pit. Come here for the pool and games, but don't come to this bar if you just want to hang out unless you want to get squished to death.
UPDATE 8/17 - please be VERY careful at this bar if you come at its busiest. One of the people I was with at Thalassa a couple of nights ago had her checks and palm pilot stolen and didn't even notice due to the large mashing of bodies. If you come at a peak time I would suggest not bringing a purse.
Loved the ocean theme! At the bar, they had wicked pufferfish shaped lighting, real fish tanks, fishnets, and cool water graphics. The drinks were stiff and the staff was friendly. We downed jager bombs, sipped long islands, and pounded glasses of draft beer. It was a night to remember.
We arrived around 9PM and there were no lines at the door or at the bar. Score! The pool hall was full, but luckily the wait time was short at only 5 minutes. Since we were on a waiting list, they gave us buzzers like in restaurants that went off when a pool table was open. We did have to pay a $10 deposit, but we knew for sure we were going to play and we were the first on the wait list, too. It was a nice setup. We played for almost 2 hours at $12 per hour. I liked how we didn't have to pay per person like other pool halls.
I loved everything about this place. The chill vibe in the pool hall, the ocean themed bar and lounge, and the friendly bouncers. Thanks Thalassa for a great night out!
If its one of those nights you're not up for the club & just want to chill, mingle with some buddies, and maybe shoot some pool with your favorite adult beverage in hand.. This is the spot.. very open space, they've got a great, reasonably priced selection of drinks, & attracts a majority of college heads which I tend to always meet pretty interesting people ..
Their wait time for tables sometimes can take a minute, but they have a whole slew of em, 20+ i think... Their rate on the weekends is $12/hour after 8PM.. they're open three sixty five til 2 in the A.M. errday! got a couple old school arcades & even a shuffle board which is pretty damn fun..
They're bathroom is small though which can suck & during the Berkeley school year, it can get ridiculously crowded.. they've got plenty of comfy lounge chairs, booths & stools which helps..
It gets pretty crazy here but always pulls through..
Another place in Berkeley that's A-OK. But I'm not a fan, even if there is little that is technically wrong with it. It's a great space, and they have many pool tables. But they pour a pretty weak drink.
Additionally I get annoyed with bars...
...when they don't take Amex
...when they ask for my ID twice
...when they advertise Thursday drink specials on Tuesday, and
...when the same drink is served in two different types of glass wear.
I'm pretty aware that these thing might not annoy other people, which is why I am not implementing my traditional habit of knocking off a star when I think a joint is over hyped.
Thalassa is emblematic of everything I hate about college bars. Enough of their clientele are meatheads and drunkards that they take a heavy hand with everyone, and I'm old enough to expect dramatically better customer service.
A coworker and I (he in a suit, and I don't think I looked all *that* bad) stopped by after an early movie. We've been there for half an hour and have two barely touched drinks on the table.
Have you ever been to a pool hall and had some stranger come up and advise you on a shot? Ladies, gents, anyone? Right. So when an older man I've never met comes up and says "you can't make that shot" without introduction, it seems logical to assume he's just telling me it's a unlikely shot. Which is probably true. I (feeling this is appropriate) jokingly and politely respond. Turns out he's the owner, and they have an unpublished rule (to my sober and generally observant eye) against jump shots. Fine, I don't take it and the problem is solved.
My co-worker (still, in a suit, lanky, and non-threatening) walks over to him a few minutes later. Three seconds later, he's physically pulled from the room and escorted by two huge guys out of the bar. Someone else just came over, took our barely touched drinks, and left me standing open-mouthed in shock at the table.
I'm left cleaning up, paying his tab, and the owner comes over to give some words as I pay up. Sorry old dude, I was the reasonable one. I didn't do anything wrong (once I was aware of your unclear rule), and if throwing out two fully employed people in business attire with barely a word is your approach to customer service, you can go to hell. Enjoy the recession, I'm sticking to places that treat their customers like, well, customers, not frat boys.
Eh, this place was ok. Decent number of beers on tap and a really spacious area. A lot of pool tables too, but of course there were also a lot of people already on them so no chance on getting one on a late Friday night. Since I just had a pint of Anchor Steam, I had nothing to complain about when it came to my drink. After all, how can you mess up pouring a pint off a tap?
That wasn't the case though with my friends. Throughout the time, they talked about how their whiskey sours, rum and cokes, gin and tonics, and vodka tonics were really watered down. I'm sure this place is pretty cool for students since it is really close to campus, but this isn't exactly a spot I would make an effort to venture out to.
Wow I really liked this place. Went on Friday night at about 10pm.
It was neither crowded nor empty.
It was neither dark nor light.
It was neither dirty or spotless.
What a place!
I had a great time playing pinball on the three machines near the patio-door. They had, if I remember correctly (and if you care?) pinball-24, pinball-Spiderman, and pinball-Batman. Woo-hoo! Happy until I lost. Then sad. :(
But happy again because my bartender was the shit!! She made me the best lemon-drops ever and I love her. I hope to see her again. In fact, I hope to get really rich and then hire her as my personal bartender. I could really tell that she was making an effort to make my drink great. I appreciate it. I was happy.
Sad though, because our seats were near these weird frat boys singing some weird frat song...
Happy again because they left and we took their booth!
Happy some more because my 2nd lemondrop was at least as good as the first!
I returned to the table and my friend, the birthday girl, spilled her drink all over herself. So- a little sad.
Happy again: new drinks for everyone!!!
But so sad to remember that I had to wake up early the next day and I didn't plan on going out in the first place... ooops.
Then Happy!! Because my boyfriend drove me home.
Because not much would have been sadder than a DUI.
It's a college bar.
They have a ton of pre-mixed drinks tucked under the bar; the bartenders know their way around a "Buttery Nipple" and "Sex on the Beach," but forget it if you want a White Lady or a Waldorf.
It's not a *bad* college bar; the meat head quotient is usually pretty low (for a college bar), there are cute girls (if you like drunk and slobbering girls in their early 20s), but it's a college bar, y'know? Good for college kids who don't know any better, yet.
Friday, 10:30PM.
Dig the set up of Thalassa. It's spacious, can handle lots of groups.
Pool tables/equipment are in decent shape (I can't stand pool houses that don't have functional sticks and standard tables). I talk like I'm a pool shark but I'm really not - I just like well kept establishments.
They have appropriate lighting for the various rooms: a bit brighter in pool table areas, darker in bar area and lounge areas.
+ Sweet setup, lots of space and efficiently used
+ Smokers are booted outside and I can't smell the smoke inside, woohoo!
- Kinda pricey just to kick it and shoot some pool with the gang
- There's music, but a dance floor would be nice...
Final Call:
Thalassa's a fun place to mix it up with the gang. Pool sharks and newbies welcome!
Cool place to hang, have drinks and play pool. Nuff said.
Love it!!
Great place to hang out, have some drinks, hang out some more...
This place holds a lot of memories....
Absolutely Love it!!!!!!
This is the place to chill!!!
No cover always free
good music
chilled people
25 pool tables!
lounge area
and full bar!
and most important DRINKS are AFFORDABLE lol
Ok How my friends and I ran in to this place. Well it happened about 5 years ago in high school.
We would chill in Berkeley because my friend works at a restaurant so we would walk around. We see a pool hall on one side of the street and we wonder how much is to play. So we attempted to go inside lol..... we found out it was bar and 21 and up area LOL! so we came back once we was all 21 as a group and had fun shooting pool and drinks lol.
Now its one of our favored kick it spots.
This place has over 25 pool tables which is crazy lol and all of them are in great condition.
When the lovely bartender at Thalassa prepares my Adios Motherfucker, she makes sure to seal the deal with a little plastic mermaid lingering on the rim and hands it to me with a warm, maternal smile, hearkening back to the milk-and-cookies days of childhood. And my stony, icy heart melts just a little.
Strong but palatable cocktails, killer service, and-- oh, yeah-- those darn pool tables. I haven't played pool there, so I'll reserve that one star for another time. Maybe.
