2008 edit:

So I just ordered the lunch special (take-out) from here and I had to adjust my rating from 4 to 4.5 stars. This deal is AWESOME. $7 for an appetizer and main dish.. and you know how some places serve measly half-portions of full dishes for their lunch versions? Not this place! The portions are huge (seems bigger than eating in) and substantial. The dishes we got are all pretty tasty (needs more spiciness though).. and damn, it's just so cheap.

Recommended:
- spicy noodles (pad kee mao)  - has a lovely cooked over an open fire slightly toasty noodle taste which is hard to find outside of bangkok
- spicy fried rice - tastes homemade
- green curry - not bad a little coconutty
- basil sauce stir-fry - not as spicy as I'd normally prefer, but tasty

choices of meat include: chicken, beef
no pork (unlike most other authentic Thai places) - so this place is skewed a little "white" but still good.
+

The waiter was more than happy to recommend dishes, when I asked him what was good, in Thai of course. Thai people always treat you extra special when they know you're one of them. By his recommendation, I got myself the stir-fried basil beef dish for $13, which came with rice. It was really tasty. He recommended the pineapple fried rice to my friend.. which also cost $13. So, this place is a little on the pricey side since portions are quite small, but the service and atmosphere are really good. I'd come here if I wanted a quick Thai fix, but if I didn't live across the street, I'd probably not bother to make a trip out here just to eat at this place.

This place makes you feel like you're in a bar/lounge.  The dark lit room, candles, posh walls and sultry music made me feel like my Thursday night wouldn't be so uneventful after all.  I wanted some curry so I asked the friendly waiter what he recommended.  I went with the Massamum and it was pretty tasty with a zesty/tangy curry feel. I ordered it with chicken/shrimp combo, and am happy to say the prawns were fresh however the chicken not so much so.  Peanuts, sweet yams, coconut curry sauce, and some type of very thin/flakey wonton filled me up.  I believe that I paid more for the setting than for the actual food, but the meal was still very decent.

P.S. I'm still looking for authentic THAI PLEASE HELP!!

The seasoning was too overpowering for the dishes. I had the coconut chicken soup and the curry seafood, which also came in a big bowl of soup. The coconut soup was a bit too sour for my tastes and the chicken was white and tasteless. The curry was a bit too hot and had a lot of mint, which combined with the seafood reminded me of my cat's litterbox. Not a good thing to smell and taste. The vegetables in both were definitely on the raw side, probably they were tossed in at the last minute.

For the price I could have gotten better Thai at Little Basil just a block down and around the corner.

I came here for the $7 lunch special. I only did take out, but it was extremely busy and it is a very beautiful restaurant. The crab dumplings were clearly store bought frozen. They were mushy and tasteless. I would suggest getting something else for your appetizer choice.
As for the main, I ordered the standard pad thai. It was pretty standard and delicious. They give you a generous portion.
Not too exciting, but it's well priced and decent quality food.

I enjoy getting take out from here because I think the lunch specials are pretty fair for the $6.95 price.  That includes a little starter (I always get spring rolls) and a meal.  I usually call in my order to pick it up since it's by my job.  I have not eaten here, although the interior is really cute, stylish and always busy when I go there.

I'm picky about pad thai, and I thought theirs was okay.  I honestly don't remember it that much, but I do know I didn't love it.  It's okay though.

However, I do love their spicy noodles.  I actually just took back some spicy noodles and eating my lunch as I write this - they made them super spicy today!

I'll continue coming back because it's a pretty good spot with nicely priced dishes.  I have a lot remaining for leftovers!

I have had their delivery many times and been into the restaurant once.  The food is always good, nothing special but predictably pretty good.  The restaurant atmosphere was kind of weird the one time I went for lunch, although the service was fine and the lunch special is well priced.

This place has great food as well as service. I came here many times and all the dishes I tried were great. I love the pad thai and spicy noodle. The lunch special here is extremely well priced and they give you a generous portion. The general layout and decor was nice, there is always a pretty flower on your table that they change everyday. Try the fried ice cream for dessert, it's pretty awesome (:

Having previewed numerous apartments up and down 3rd Ave on a daily basis, I was shocked to find this gem sitting on the corner of 28th St and 3rd Ave in the heart of Gramercy. Its chic interior decor drew me to the large windows as I noticed its much-raved about raw cement design with button cushions affixed to the wall. One look at the menu, and I knew exactly what I had to order. Zagat's testimonial says, "Their pad thai is to die for!"

Having read that much, I ordered the pad thai. It 'ravished my inquisitive palate creating an orgasmic explosion of scintillating flavors' (you like that one? it's from ugly betty :p). But yes, after eating what used to be a delicious bowl of pad thai from Red House, ThaiNY brought something refreshing to the table. By far, the BEST pad thai I've had in the city!

In this economic downturn, ThaiNY also brings you an excellent value meal of a $6.95 lunch special. A hearty meal that won't run you dry. Go try their pad thai for yourself. It's worth a shot.

I'm Thai so I'm biased... so take this  review with a grain of salt. Or rather, eat here and have it all in your dish. The chef here needs to relax with the salt shaker, everything was super salty... even the salad. ??? As an appetizer I ordered the soft shell crab over mango salad. The crab was delish! but its also not very Thai. The mango salad was really salty when it was suppose to be sweet and spicy.

And what is up with my Thai peoples opening restaurants right next to each other or on the same block/street. I'm referring to Jaiya next door and I'm wondering if should've ate there instead.

Thai ice coffee.. best thing in the meal.

I ordered Pad Se Ew. Com'on if you're a Thai chef you can't get this wrong. Its what I always ordered when I'm forced to eat at Thai restaurants because I know its the safest and most fool-proof choice. I couldn't eat it. The noodles weren't cooked. It was hard as in still frozen from the freezer drenched in soy sauce. My husband who eats anything even an egg roll that dropped on the street couldn't eat it. Thats saying something.

I gave this place one star not because of the food, I'm sure they were having an off night but for service. We had to get our own menus and flag down the waitress 10 times only to be told, I'm not your waitress. Umm... Excuse me?  Yes, it was a friday night but they were not busy.

Get it together my peoples!

Not the worst Thai I have eaten, but Little Basil around the corner on 26th St is far superior and around the same price.

The decor is interesting and service is prompt. I haven't ever had to wait long to be seated during my two visits. The portions are also large, but this, combined with excessive use of oil, made me feel a little nauseous.

I have had the pad thai with chicken, and although the chicken was tender and tasty, during my most recent visit, the meal was so salty that I had to have my water glass refilled three times. It was almost inedible. My husband's was fine though, so benefit of the doubt to them on that one.

Some coworkers and I were in the mood for some Thai food a week or two ago, so we headed over to ThaiNY. I'd seen this place walking to work and the lunch menu posted online looked great - $7 for an appetizer and entrée. I was sold.

The inside is pretty cool with a modern twist, and the service was fast which I appreciate when you're on a one-hour lunch break. Picking the appetizer was the hardest part for me, but ultimately I went with the Tom Yum soup and Chicken Pad Thai for my entrée - no surprise there. Other appetizers at our table were the shumai (these were excellent and the best app) and the Tom Ka soup (coconut-based broth), and other entrees were the Rice Noodles with Broccoli and Beef and the Spicy Noodles and Beef.

Unfortunately I was not a huge fan of the Tom Yum soup - the broth was good but it didn't have any shrimp in it and the vegetables were hard, clearly not cooked long enough. However, my Chicken Pad Thai was excellent - spicy, sweet and peanutty. It's definitely my favorite Thai/pad thai spot in the work neighborhood thus far and I can't wait to go back and get more. And while the rest of the group all thought the portions were small, I thought they were just right for lunch.

The Tom Ka soup did not go over well. One person said it tasted like fermented breast milk and one person just got sick of the flavor and didn't want to finish it - a rarity for him.

The Spicy Noodles were good, but nothing outstanding.

On to the Broad Noodles with Broccoli dish: The bulk of the plate were those broad, slippery noodles. My friend said they had "zero taste" and if anything it was like swallowing a scoop of flour. He also equated searching for the beef chunks to sifting for gold in an 1850's San Francisco stream. And he was not pleased about the broccoli since it was all stems. (he clearly had a lot of thoughts)

All in all I think it's good, especially for the value of the lunch menu, but the items are hit and miss.

Last week I had a dilemma... order from Jaiya or ThaiNY. I mean they are right next to each other, have comparable menus and similar prices. Initially, I put my trust in Yelp and ordered food from Jaiya but the food did not do it for me. Jaiya was bland, the rice was very gummy and the food didn't have those traditional bold Thai flavors. So for the past week I have been craving good Thai food and luckily ThaiNY was the answer.

ThaiNY's lunch special is awesome - good value and very flavorful. Everything was fresh and perfectly seasoned. I will definitely be going back to ThaiNY; never again to Jaiya.

I love this place for a quick, cheap lunchtime escape from the office.  My coworkers and I show up during peak lunchtime, and while busy, we are always seated promptly.  The service is great.  They're available and fast.  The lunch specials offer a ton of food for $7.  I like the fish cake appetizer and green curry w/ chicken.  I've tried a lot of the other dishes and they all range from decent to good.  I won't say "OMG best Thai EVRRR" but it's good enough, cheap enough and quick enough that I visit almost weekly.

Oh, I'm a fan alright. You have no idea how many nights I have thought really hard about what I can cook for myself with the groceries I so sincerely bought the Saturday before, but ended up ordering from ThaiNY!  It's the only restaurant in New York that has claimed a spot in my phonebook.  Yes, my family and friends now have to compete with ThaiNY for my minutes.

I usually get the pad see ew, pad thai, green curry or vegetable gyoza. All the dishes are very flavorful, the chicken is always tender and vegetables are always cruncy, and the food is at my doorstep in 15 minutes max (they are right across the street).  You know what I love? They don't skimp on the rice. Most thai places give you disproportionately lower amounts of rice (or greater amounts of curry), but not ThaiNY.  They give me enough rice, even if it is sad that it actually makes me happy.

Now, I don't only get take out from ThaiNY; that would preposterous! It would be like carrying on some phony relationship where you spend an awful lot of time talking to each other on the telephone but never actually meet up.  I've had a sit-in dinner with friends at ThaiNY many times, and it's much larger than you would expect and fairly well-decorated. The food is only slightly better than when it is delivered, so clearly (and admirably) they don't treat people ordering delivery like second class citizens.

If you haven't figured it out by now, let me say it loud and clear - I love ThaiNY.  The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because, and it pains me to say this, I know its not "as good as it gets".  I know this because I've had better thai food on three seperate occasions.  You win, Yelp. You've made me compare ThaiNY to other thai restaurants and in the process made me realize its not the best Thai I've ever had, but know that I'll always have a soft corner for ThaiNY and I will not remove it from my phonebook.

The Good:
Stir fried vegetables were tasty and much better than I expected.

The Bad:
My expectations were extremely low after trying their Pad Thai.  It looked and tasted as if they dolloped half a pint of ketchup on it.

Food and presentation = A+. Service and atmosphere closer to a C+.

We arrived and were placed in their backroom, which was freezing and uninviting compared to the main dining area. We quickly requested to be moved to another table, but our request took so long that we just stayed at the table. Normally I would get up and leave in a situation like this, but the plates of food coming out to other diners were too impressive looking to pass up.

We were right to stick it out. The food turned out to be amazing. My masaman curry was creamy, well-balanced and seasoned to perfection. My friend's mock duck was savory and tender as well. It was some of the better Thai I've experienced at very reasonable prices.

There really is nothing better than having a restaurant where you can grab a quick bite that is right across the street from your apartment.  In my case, this is ThaiNY.

This is by no means the best Thai I have ever had (let me know if you need suggestions for GREAT Thai food).  On the other hand, it is really great when you are craving some delicious Pad Thai, or my favorite, Pad See Ew, and all you have to do is run across the street in your sweats -- it's a real treat!

Inside the restaurant is much bigger than it seems from the front, and the place always seems pretty full.  Their menu has all the tradition Thai choices but they also have house specialties and they have beer and a wine menu which is a nice addition.

In terms of the food, everything that I have had has been really good.  My go-to meal is the rice noodle with Chinese broccoli and chicken.  For the vegetarians, their vegetable duck is also quite good.  (The last time I was there with a friend who ordered vegetable duck they were nice enough to ask if it was OK that the dish have egg in it.  This is just good customer service if you ask me.)

Final Analysis:
This would never be a destination location for me, but it is perfect for staying in and watching TV or grabbing a quick bite on the way home from work.  ThaiNY's service and food make this a great standby for those nights you fight about what you really want to eat and whether or not you really want to leave the house!

Came in here for lunch the other day (Wednesday) and were seated promptly, although half way through the lunch it seemed at capacity. They have a great little lunch menu where you get one appetizer of choice and one entrée of choice. I opted for the spring roll appetizer (came with 2), which was good. A friend and I split an additional appetizer of chicken satay (came with 4), which was delicious, as anything with peanut sauce usually is. My entrée was the Cashew Nuts Sauce (wok stir-fried) with chicken, which was good.

Overall the meal was good and you can't beat the lunch special at $6.95. It's also a good lunch place that you can get in and out of quickly if need be. One downside is the soda doesn't have free re-fills.

ThaiNY, what is happening to you? Used to be weekly lunch spot for me and my coworkers. Can't really beat the $7 lunch deal which includes an appetizer (Crab dumpling is the fave) and entree. Drunken noodle, red curry, pad kee mao, chicken with basil are all decent. Wouldn't really get the pad thai, the other dishes mentioned above are way better.

Regardless of the deal, which is why we still go every once in a while (and because this area is seriously lacking good thai food), we find that the service keeps changing, as well as the plates/glasses and quantity/quality of the food. Its left us confused.

Had dinner here once, was good but felt wrong paying double the lunch price for each entree. Much more expensive experience. With an app, 2 entrees, and a bottle of wine it came to about 70 bucks. For $70, go somewhere else. Maybe next door to Jaiya? But of course Jaiya has a less trendy vibe than ThaiNY. So if you're on a date - ThaiNY and whenever not, Jaiya.

The Pad Kee Mao is delicious here and has the perfect spiciness to a T! When my friends and I went, we couldn't help but to commentate on the awesome and expensive decor.

They have tons of Thai restaurants in the area, but this one we stumbled upon when the neighboring thai restaurant had a long wait.

Good for groups and would come back if I was craving Thai in Gramercy Park!

My sister-in-law and I were wandering the neighborhood after a movie for a place to have dinner and happened upon Thainy.  I hadn't heard anything about it before, but we were so hungry we were willing to take a gamble.

The decor inside is a bit trendy, so I had somewhat low expectations (in my experience, trendy decor often means the place is trying to compensate for mediocre food).  But the food was surprisingly good!  I had a spicy noodle dish that was similar to pad thai, and it was one of those meals that made me a little sad the more it disappeared off my plate (it was yumm-y!).  My SIL enjoyed hers very much, which says a lot since thai food is her favorite.

The service wasn't 'above and beyond,' but they were definitely attentive enough and kept our water glasses full.  It's slightly pricey for thai food, but won't break the bank.  I would definitely go back if I'm in the neighborhood again.

I agree with Emma L.  I too ordered Pad See Ew and found it oily and salty.  I now sit with a huge stomach ache and am tempted to try and leave work early because my stomach hurts so much.  It might be that or it could have been that the crab dumplings were undercooked?

I have no idea why I'm in so much pain, all I know is that it was definitely the food.

I guess I got what I paid for at ~$7

Simply bangin'.  I have eaten Thainy about 12 times since moving to the neighborhood.  Mostly delivery but every once in awhile we will go in and sit down.  Best pad thai that I have ever had.  Great dumplings.  Entree sizes seem a little larger delivery than they do in-house, but nothing to complain about.  Reasonable prices.  Never screwed up an order.  Highly recommended.

I've had lunch here on Sunday on two occasions. Large space. No wait. Fast service. Ok-food. I've had one of the fish dishes before and the green curry with chicken. Prices are definitely on the high side unless you get in on their weekday specials, but portions are very decent and will definitely not leave you hungry (especially the noodle dishes).

I was with a group of about 20+ people on my last visit. They were very accommodating and split us in 3 tables. All of our food came out almost right away (big thumbs up). The middle room's acoustics are horrible though. We could barely hear each other talk. If you get a chance, check out their bathroom. It's one of the nicer bathrooms I've seen in NYC. The decor is very hip and modern.

casual but cute, with chill ambiance. was told this is the best thai food in the 3 block radius, and thaiNY didn't disappoint.

our waiter was nice but forgot to get our waters and my sister's appetizer.

also, we sat next to a loud/rude triple date with some guys who were being very condescending to the waiter (which is unacceptable and a horrible character flaw) but ya kno...it was an isolated incident. just unpleasant to listen to. my sister and i tried to fart as we were leaving to soil their dinner, but we had no gas :-( haha

i like the open windows for people watching, and the chill atmosphere.

and i felt guilty about eating all the pad thai, but it was really good and i was hungry!

I'll be honest, when it comes to ethnic, I prefer a hole-in-the-wall type of a place.  Thainy does not fit that description.  It's modern in design, cool lighting, hip music.  However, this place delivers the goods so I won't hold the decor against it.
Affordable and tasty.  I love the many vegetarian options, the mock duck doesn't disappoint and according to my boyfriend, the real duck is very tasty as well.
This has become the go-to Thai place for us and we've yet to leave disappointed.

If the first thing you hear as you walk into a Thai place is clubbing music, you're never really sure what to expect.

ThaiNY's interior is tastefully stylish - just imagine a pomerian in Prada. Like their fashionable beverage glasses, ThaiNY is somewhat tiny (get it?).

For lunch, I ordered their "spicy noodles" ($14.95, that's with roasted duck). It came out quickly, nice and warm. While its presentation wasn't bad, the duck itself was dry and not spicy at ALL (it didn't help that I was still stoked from my roasted duck experience at Amarin Thai in San Diego, just the week before). I had asked for it to be spicy - a 14 out of 10 on a spiciness scale - and gotten a disappointing 2 or 3 (I'm being nice). Our friendly server had the foresight to bring us hot sauce with our entrees. She also kept our waters filled.

My friends, who also ate there with me, enjoyed what they had - I think I got the short end of the stick this time. Based on my dish, I still prefer Spice (for its trendiness and deliciousness) and Wondee Siam #1 (for its authenticity). I'll return to ThaiNY to try their curry, but only if they throw some spice in!

I was pleasantly surprised with this place.  I always enjoy Jaiya Thai next door, so I wasn't sure this place would be very good, but I was wrong.

I tried the curry puff for an appetizer - it was a deep fried ball filled with potato.  Not that great, but the table next to me got the spring roll and that looked really good.

For an entree, I went with the duck with pineapple, and it was excellent.  The portion was pretty big, and the duck was tender.  Just a note of caution - they keep the skin on and serve it with the bones, so be careful.  It's some of the best Thai duck I have had.

A tad on the expensive side for takeout but you definitely get what you pay for here. Considering the quality in return, it was definitely worth it and I'll order again!

- Tamarind Duck ($16.95) [roasted duck glanced with tamarind sauce garnished with cashew nuts] - the sauce was sweet and great. However it kinda uncrisped the duck skin..blah. very big quarter inch boneless pieces and full of flavor though.
- Pad Kee Mow ($8.95) - ordered the chicken. very flavorful, not too salty, noodles didn't stick together.
- Stir Fried Broccoli ($8.95) - i custom ordered chinese broccoli w/ oyster sauce
house special basil fried rice
- Spicy Basil Fried Rice ($10.95) [w/shrimp, chicken and vegetables] - very tasty indeed..best fried rice I've had in a long while

I Never Get Tired of Going to ThaiNY

ThaiNY is the best Thai you can get in the gramercy/kips bay/ murray hill area. The food is always fresh, the service is always quick and nice and the prices cant be beat. Add the "trendy and modern" feeling that the restaurant has and this place is perfect for dates or a group dinner. The menu boasts some good beverages and specialty cocktails. The food is always well decorated and delivered and the waiters are very attentive (my water glass never went more then a 3/4 empty). I keep going back and wont stop anytime soon.

I'm on a mission to try the tum yum at every thai restaurant in Manhattan.

Had the tum yum w/ chicken from ThaiNY last night....really, I'd give it 3.5 stars if that were an option.  It was good and I liked the option to add noodles.  Definitely would've been better if spicier, but decent as it was.  I'd order from them again, but still think Aceluk on the west side holds the tom yum title.

A great thai place in NY!

I have to say - ever since I moved here 9 months ago, I have seriously been in dire straights about finding a "good" thai place that has a decent selection of vegetarian items.  I went to this place for the first time within a week of it opening and  I was amazed.  The waitress was so patient (and truly honest) as she explained to me what could be made without fish/oyster/shrimp sauce and what was pre-made with it. Every time I go to this place the item that I have is fantastic...very fresh, extremely tasty with just the right amout of spice.

The decor is okay - very standard, pretty, nothing fantastic, but the food and the wait staff make it all worth it!

THAINY is average at best.  Just another corner ethnic place suitable for for take-out.  The focus is far more about the decor here than it is about the food.  I live right near by and they've opened and closed this place several times to make adjustments to the polished concrete floors and the modern couch-style booths.  What's funny is that when you read the menu, all of the reviews from the various media outlets all focus on the decor of the place as opposed to making an assessment of the food.

I tried it last night for the first time and had the chicken dumplings, red curry, and pad thai.  The dumplings were overcooked and the outer shells were actually crunchy (gross), the pad thai was below average and the red curry was the highlight since it was about average.

THAINY will continue to draw foot traffic because it's bright and colorful and trendy looking, but I'd absolutely recommend going with Joey Thai for delivery instead if you live in the Murray Hill / Kips Bay area.    I hear it's a dive of a place but the food is of much better quality.  Word!

Look don't let anyone fool you there is NOTHING different about this place.  It's just like Spice or some other regular designy thai restaurant, which is great, kind of boring but great.  Not even that good of a deal.  $10 lunch special?  NOT SO special.

EXCEPT if you ask these guys to make something spicy THEY WILL FUCKING MAKE YOUR SHIT SPICY.  NO ONE ELSE EVER DOES THIS SO THAINY IS UP THERE IN MY BOOK.   I CAN'T STAND THOSE OTHER PUSSIES WHO DON'T UNDERSTAND

This place surprised me as I wasn't expecting too much.  Came with 3 friends on a Friday night with no reservations and didn't have to wait.  Ordered a bunch of things to share and everything was pretty good.  The duck special that night really stood out, perfectly tender and great flavor.  Their "Special Pad Thai to Die For" didn't seem like it was worth a visit with the grim reaper...

Plus one star because the owner really liked my friend and gave us a piece of paper where he had written 10% discount and signed his name for the next time we come.  He promised that he'd honor it so to be continued...

The thing that bugs me the most about this place is I can't figure out how they want their name pronounced!

Are they being clever? Is it ThaiNY as in "tiny"? Or is it simply "thai en why"?  I ask the server and she tells me "thai en why".  Then I hear one of them pick up the phone "tiny".

Ah no matter. The food here I would give 2 stars. It really isn't that great, but the service was so exceptional it bumped it up a star.

After reviewing their menu choices, I've decided this place is probably trying to be clever.  With menu items like pad thai - to die for, yum yum bbq beef salad, "feel sexy - red curry" or "feel good- massaman curry" you have to admire their flare for having a laugh.

Unfortunately the food wasn't all that great, out of all the things I found the only thing decently good was their yum yum bbq beef salad.  It had just the right amount of taste.  The meats in all their other dishes, especially the chicken was extremely dry and chalky making the dish rather disgusting.

The sauces were mediocre and when you pair this together with crummy preparation of the meat, it just makes for an awful experience.

The service on the other hand is extremely friendly and attentive.  The moment I dropped my fork on the ground and leaned down to pick it up there was already the hand of the waitress picking it up and simultaneously giving me a new one.  Water is constantly full without you even realizing they're filling it, allowing you to concentrate on your conversation and your meal. Just the way I like it.

If only they could just improve the cooking!
