(4 + 1 + 4 + 4) / 4 = 3.25....so we'll go with 3 stars.
We were starving and neither one of us wanted to cook. "Let's order Thai food!" I told my new roomie. Her three year old wanted pancakes and eggs.
"Spring rolls are like pancakes and eggs." We ordered from Thai Wild Ginger and my roomie warned me, "Sometimes it's ok, sometimes it's terrible. It's never really good. But the pick up orders are always fast and it's a two minute walk from here."
I ordered Spicy Basil Chicken. They do not mince the chicken as is expected for authenticity and the only thing spicy about it was the slices of jalepenos. The spring rolls were really good substitutes for pancakes and eggs. My three year old roomie didn't even notice we changed his menu.
Myself and a friend headed here before a movie after seeing Pequod's looking pretty busy.
First impressions: decor was pretty lousy but the service was fast. so we're neutral to begin with, and this environment is typical of a lot of Chinese or Thai places. The place was fairly full and we were offered water and menus right away.
I ordered the Spicy Basil with beef, and my friend ordered the Five Star with chicken. We received our food pretty quickly, but it wasn't very good. Mine wasn't spicy at all, it was pretty bland all around. It was kinda like a bowl of green peppers and beef with some soy sauce.
My friends dish looked a little better than mine, and he liked it, but this is my review and he's from Oklahoma.
It's not the best thai food I've ever had but it's not the worst either. We grabbed a quick lunch here before heading over to catch a movie across the street.
We split an order of crab rangoon which I thought were pretty tasty and I always appreciate when a little scallion is thrown into the mix. I ordered cashew chicken and thought it was pretty decent although I wish they had thrown the cashews into the entree and "cooked' them a minute instead of just sprinklin them on top. My friend got the pangang curry and she said it was OK (again, not the best but not the worst). My other friend got pad siew with tofu...she ate it all so I assume she enjoyed it.
No complaints from any of us. I think we each put in 15 bucks (including tip). Service was good but it was not very crowded. It was a decent place to grab a bite before heading over the the movies.
Yes there is nothing better than really good Thai noodles. I go to every Thai place and start with a basic dish and base my next visit accordingly. The Thai wild ginger is a sure bet for decent Thai food. You won't be blown away but at the same time it will do when your in need for Thai and in the area. Prices are in the $7-9 range, for it being an average three stars, there is always a good amount of people eating here. There better places but if you felt like trying out another Thai spot, and don't want to get burned, this is sure bet.
This is a great restaurant to eat at if you are going to the movies across the street and do not want to spend a lot of money. I went there on a Tuesday night at about 7:30pm and we were one of three couples in the restaurant. It is a BYOB place, but we didn't bring anything with us, so I don't know about a cork fee.
We had the spring roll appetizers and were very disappointed in them. The sauce tasted like apricot jam and we did not finish them. The waitress saw that and asked if we wanted something different, so we tried the eggrolls and those were just okay too.
I had the pad see ew at a medium spice and it was again just okay. The noodles were very thick, which I really like, but the sauce was too bland. My wife had the pad kee mow at medium to mild spice and it was spicier than mine and actually a lot better.
There fliers say they host parties in there, but it looked too small for that. I personally don't know that we would go back to this place...maybe if we were going to another movie.
I'm not a big fan of this place, but since I LOVE pot stickers, I'll give them 3 stars because the steamed chicken ones are the BOMB.
Looking for fast food that' won't clog your arteries?: this is the place (ready in 10 minutes)
Looking for cheap?: Definitely reasonable
Looking for meat?: You might as well go somewhere else because their chicken basil had more mushrooms than anything else in the dish
If I was craving Thai would I go to this place?: definitely not, much better places elsewhere. But if you live on the outskirts of Bucktown like me, then it's definitely convenient
Thai Wild Ginger... how I love you... let me count the ways!!!
1) You are inexpensive.
2) You are delicious.
3) You always fill me up and yet leave me wanting more. :)
After that being said, I can understand why people may not have as strong of feelings for this place as I do. After reading other people's reviews, there is some truth in them. Sure, the decor leaves little to be desired, the ambiance is nothing to write home about, but when food tastes that good and is that cheap... does that really matter?
Would highly recommend:
Tom Yum soup/ Cucumber Salad
Crab Ran goo
Ginger chicken or basil beef
All in all great food that is relatively inexpensive! Give it is a try! :) Plus, if you don't like the dining experience, order take out! Problem solved!
Thai Wild Ginger, I love you! Thank you for consistently good food and service.

It's okay. Not the best, but edible. And when you're really craving Thai food, it will do...but I am still on a quest to find a better Thai restaurant.
I've tried a range of dishes including the green curry with beef, wild curry, pad see ew, tom yum, and tom kha. LIke I said, it's fine but not great. And the green curry is hit or miss in terms of spiciness....they aren't ever really consistent.
Wouldn't recommend the thai iced tea. Stick to jasmine tea or beer.
Note: I recently went with a group of 6 plus baby, and they were all over the place on bringing out food to us. Some of us got all our appetizers and food before others even got their appetizers. Then a few got their entrees almost 20 minutes after the rest of us had finished eating. Not recommended for groups...they can't seem to coordinate.
I think my review will be consistent with several others - this place was along the way home yesterday so we stopped by to grab a bite. The inside decor is nothing to write home about which also goes with the service as well.
We tried the tempura appetizer, which came with a sweet and spicy sauce that was pretty good. I had the grilled eggplant special with chicken and was pleasantly surprised, pretty decent dish. The girlfriend got red curry and ranked it was "decent" but not good enough to out-class her favorite Thai Classic.
The bill was pretty standard fare, $25 for 2 entrees, appetizer and a can of Coke. Might be good in the future when craving Thai but don't want to put up with the delivery wait of Oodles or Thai Classic.
I live really close to Thai Wild Ginger so I always consider it when I'm ordering food. It probably isn't the greatest or most authentic thai around but I really really enjoy the curry fried rice they sell.
Not the greatest thai place in the world, but quick and tasty
Big meh.
I tried this place this weekend. I had an insatiable thai craving, and my favorite place (Thai Eatery) wasn't open yet. I decided to give this place a try, and ordered online via a service called grubhub. It had a '4 star' rating there, which is shocking. The food was greasy, bland, served in chinese restaurant boxes, and just tasted like MSG, noodles, and meat product. It filled me up, but was painful.
P.S. Who puts american broccoli in pad see ew?
I came here for lunch yesterday while on the go with my friend. It was our first time here and we just decided to stop in. The woman who took our order deserved an A for attitude as hers was clearly out of this world! We didn't have cash and only debit cards and she let us know that she was NOT pleased. This isn't to say that they don't have a way to process debit cards, but it was clearly an inconvenience and I apologized along with my friend.
It only took 5 minutes for her to bring our food and it was pretty good. I had the chicken fried rice and I enjoyed it. I'm not a big fan of Thai food overall, but it was pretty good.
Yuck! I would not go back. We went here out of convenience before going to the movies. The food tasted like grill and like all the other food that had been cooked that evening. My pad thai did not taste like pad thai...more like burnt, bland, yuckiness.
This was the second time I had been here and was not pleased with anything. The restaurant was dead, which was not a surprise, because who would want to eat here!
Thai Wild Ginger is between two of my favorite places: Pequods and Flounders. Unless you are a piece of bacon, that is not a good place to be.
However, I do sometimes get a tinkering for Thai so I ordered from here two weekends ago. There were some hits and some misses (where-oh-where is my favorite Thai place hiding?) but this stuff is not greasy! The veggies are fresh! That is a major PREESH - especially when you just tried to be a vegetarian but tacked on some lbs due to too many carbs and too much cheese (vegetarianism was NOT for me in case you couldn't tell).
I ordered the chicken satay and found the chicken to be mad tasty and actually GRILLED instead of floppy/boiled. The pepper chicken was excellent. The Tom Yum made me want to chunder- not the best flavor combos at all and what is with the floating mushrooms on top? I was on the fence about the basil fried rice and one bite of the complimentary egg roll was enough for a lifetime.
All in all, this place is pretty pricey and the menu seems dicey (har, har) BUT everything was fresh. I am still on a hunt for my staple Thai restaurant so let me know if you have any suggestions. Otherwise I will just stick to pizza (cheese-less, maybe?) and beer.
So far the worst experience with thai food.
We got appetizers crab rangoon and fried tofu. Tofu was good and yummy but crab rangood was esentailly a creamcheese filled wonton cracker.
We asked for chopsticks and never got them for appetizers even though the waitress said she'd bring them.
The food was ok. Boyfriend's Chicken stir fried dish was pretty bland. But i ordered one of the specialty curry stir fried dish and it was really spicy and good. Veggies were crunchy and fresh and everything but smaller portions then usual.
So we were eating our meals and deciding on dessert. Well as soon as we were done our plates were cleared. Wanted to order dessert but waitress dropped off our check without even looking at us.
It was mostly empty with about 3 other tables full and one of them leaving.
So the service totally sucks. They are nice but not really good.
Probably would only go if desperate for thai or something and we are in the area.
I'm like, really with all these bad reviews??? REALLY?? I personally love this place, maybe it's because I always get the same thing (Pad Woon Sen, pot stickers, crab rangoon). When it's semi busy here the waitress gets a bit frazzled and can't really get it together. But everything always tastes fresh. It can be on the greasy side, but I haven't found many Thai restaurants in Chicago that aren't. Anywho, love it! Nuff said ;)
The service was fine, the noodles were decent, BUT Don't order ANYTHING with seafood in it. I'm sure everyone could have told me that, but I guess I had to find out the hard way...
I probably won't go back, but it was okay for a quick bite before a movie.
We've been fans of this place for years.
Favs are the red curry, pad see eew, pad woon sen, lard nar, all with tofu no eggs. Tofu salad is a favorite!
Circa 8 years ago - i do think the food was a bit better, when the owner was still cooking. Now it's the 2nd string - but still very good.
I will preface this review by saying that my sense of smell is a little impaired right now as I've recently had sinus surgery. That being said, the food I ordered tonight was actually quite flavorful--the first food I've been able to actually taste in nearly a week.
I wanted to order some sort of salad, something with tofu, and also caved in to my ocassional jones for a bubble tea.
I got Nam Sod, a salad of ground chicken and a perky lime/chili dressing--probably my favorite thai dish, and this was a pretty good rendition.
Mixed feelings about the garlic tofu. Veggies were great, fresh and crisp, and the sauce was pleasantly garlic-y and not overly greasy like much delivery Thai. But, there was barely any tofu. Like, tiny little matchstick pieces of tofu that could barely be discerned amongst the veg. Definite points off for that.
I do however, love that you can order brown rice instead of white.
The bubble tea was squishy and cold and just what I wanted in my slightly infirmed state. Nothing earth shattering. Just mango creamy bubble tea.
So, I'd order it again and probably will once I'm feeling better. And I'll ask for extra tofu.
I suppose it's just like so many other Thai places you go to: your experience depends on what you order. I really liked the food here and was pleasantly surprised.
To begin, we got veggie egg rolls. Okay, they weren't so amazing, but they weren't bad and I love it when I can get the vegetarian version of these greasy, bad-for-you eats. Yummy. So, I'm easily excited.
Our main course, though, was really good. I had green curry w/ tofu and my friend had red curry w/ tofu. Both were excellent. They were very flavorful and full of good veggies. I have had so many bad green curries that I think the goodness of this one is significant.
Lastly, they left us alone which was great. If you're looking for a really happening, upbeat atmosphere, I don't think this is what you want. But, for two friends who hadn't seen each other in quite a while, it was perfect. We sat for a very long time and talked and no one gave us the evil eye. I would definitely go back here again!
Pot Pan was closed, we'd already eaten at Penny's that day, so we were casting about for places to get my pad thai fix. We decided on Thai Wild Ginger because my ladyfriend had remembered going there sometime in the distant past and that it was decent, as she recalled.
The cucumber salad was very yummy. I had the pad thai, veganized (tofu and no egg). Ladyfriend had some kind of veggie-cellophane noodle dish. The pad thai was passable, but not the best ever. Ladyfriend's dish was terrible. It had an odd taste and was too salty. The jasmine tea we ordered at the beginning of the meal did not arrive until the end, but it was very nice.
Also, the restaurant was nearly empty -- probably about three or four parties. But they seated everyone right next to each other, so that in the relative silence of the restaurant you could hear everyone's conversations. Let's just say there were a lot of weird people there that night, and I hope Jake makes up with his parents and Karen recovers from her chemo.
Also, given the neighborhood, street parking is difficult.
We stopped in here for dinner before we caught our movie, and it was okay. I rarely complain about flavorful food, but something about the place was excessive - like the Thai tea was almost too sweet and the Chicken Pad Thai was overly saturated with sauce. I can't believe me who loves sauce and flavorful would have said that, but there I said it. The ambiance was fine, and the service was a little lacking in grabbing our waitress to head out. The price of the food was average, but I have had worse Thai food so I have to say that this was adequate.
After doing a bit of research online I decided to go with Thai Wild Ginger since the reviews were decent. I ordered tofu Pad Thai without fish sauce, egg rolls, and Tom Kha soup through GrubHub for delivery and got a delivery time of 40 minutes. At 45 minutes the doorbell rang and I opened the door to an apologetic delivery guy who said the roads were icy but it normally takes a much shorter time, which is good to know. However, all of the dishes were bland. The Pad Thai was just mildly sweet rice noodles, onions, bean sprouts, and tofu with a sprinkling of chopped peanuts (and no lime), the soup was mushrooms and tofu afloat in coconut milk, and the egg rolls, although crispy without being too greasy, were just wonton, cabbage and bean thread noodles. Interesting texture, but ultimately bland. I may try the Pad See Ew and one of the curries before I write it off completely.
Thai food is ok. Very convenient if you're in the area. They are supposed to have "express" service if you're waiting for a movie across the street at Webster Place. Never tried the expressed service, so don't know if it's truly express!
this place is cute. the menus are adorable. LOL. umm i've come here with my sister and boyfriend. I've enjoyed it there. i usually get the pineapple fried rice and green tea bubble shake.
I've ordered in here only so I cannot comment on the dine-in experience. I noticed it is pricier than it's other thai competitors within Chicago but I really enjoyed the Shrimp Red Curry and Tom Yum Vegetable soup. I would certainly order again but don't think it's the best Thai in the city.
Good but not great! The service is nice but I suppose I should stick to what I know when it comes to ordering Thai food. Their thai noodle soup is pretty good and is what I usually order. I've never had Thai spring rolls, don't eat em ever. I thought they were fried spring rolls but they're not. Their chicken pad thai was alright. I've had better.
I was underwelmed by my recent experience there. I recall going about a year before and being happy. The baby egg rolls were a perfect size for a pair to share. I like baby egg rolls over the large ones, I think they're easier to eat.
This past visit, I didn't like the pad thai noodles in my order. They were very very thin so that the bunched together in one lump--kind of like when you overcook angel hair pasta. I've had pad thai at several different thai places and I've never seen noodles lke this in the dish. I had their special: the chicken and shrimp pad thai and I loved the shrimp in it. Done perfectly, but I wish there was more of it and the chicken so it wasn't just a glop of noodles with bean sprouts. Like someone else reviewed, I would've like a lime as well.
I was also missing a fork and had to get one from another table--which isn't a big deal, but was kind of annoying that they didn't even notice--the fork was the only utensil AT the place setting, so how could you miss it? The place wasn't that busy but their waitresses were running around like it was.
Like most thai and BYOB places, the decor and environment isn't much, but that's now why you go. You go for the good, authentic, cheap food. Their food didn't live up to what I thought it would. My fav thai place is Noodles in the Pot. Next time, I'll walk a bit further in the show for thai and won't listen to my friend :)
The main reason to go here is to get quick sit-down dinner before a film at Webster Place or Facets, service is quick & pretty good. Any dish which includes rice is usually reliable, though I've had noodle dishes here that have been disappointing. OK overall, but not the best Thai in town.
Ok, there are mixed reviews about this place, but like stated earlier, it really depends on what you order. I normally get the potstickers, crab rangoons and the chicken pad se eiw (sp), I've been very satisfied with that. I have also tried the mango with sticky rice! very good and sweet and a great entree or dessert. For everything else, so so....
i go to this place all the time. they have great service as well as decent prices. i love the pad see eww.
