You know, there's nothing better than enjoying a quiet, early Saturday evening dinner out with someone you love. Thai Tony's is certainly not the most romantic spot in Kensington, but the food is excellent.
I've been here a couple of times now, and the food never ceases to amaze me. On this trip, my fiancee and I first shared the Mummy Shrimp (shrimp stuffed with chicken and fried nice and crispy and served with a sweet plum sauce), which was fantastic. For our entrees, she ordered the seafood combination of shrimp, squid, crabmeat, and mussels prepared in a basil sauce, and I ordered the sweet & sour duck (prepared with pineapples, cucumber, carrots, onions, scallions, and peppers). The duck dish was awesome. Try not to envision the taste to be anything like sweet & sour chicken you'd get at some cheap, Americanized Chinese restaurant, because it was nothing at all like that. The pineapple is distinctively what gave the dish its unique and subtly sweet flavor. Also, the portions are very generous. We simply had to take what we couldn't finish to go...which made for a scrumptious midnight snack later on.
Apparently they don't have even a beer and wine license, so none of that is available, unfortunately, since I was craving a beer during dinner. And the inside dining area is very small, so I imagine that Thai Tony's does the bulk of its business from take out and delivery, which I'm sure we'll take advantage of many, many times down the road.
Decent quality food, but unremarkable. The Valcanic BBQ Chicken was good, but the Tom Yum Soup, Thai Ribs, and Larb were just OK. The curries seemed a little bit small. Alright delivery time, courteous service. Too much ice in the Thai iced tea for a glass that size. May be better at the restaurant.
Food was excellent. Had the pad thai and it was the best I've ever had.
Prices were also really cheap which is a bonus.
Update: got Massaman curry with chicken the other day and it was really great.
4 stars cuz I'm surprised to find this place in my neighborhood, with certain foods somewhat almost as authentic as planet thai's.
My neighborhood pretty much has zero places nice enough for going on dates at, but this place has extremely decent food and an even more decent atmosphere.
Ordered the weekday lunch special twice.
$10 minimum delivery so I had to order 2 meals at one time. As always in these type situations, just save(d) the latter for dinner.
first time:
the chicken ginger was very good.
the beef basil, they got my order wrong and gave me beef with brocoli instead.
lunch special portions are small but perfect if you're on a diet;
comes with rice and spring roll. I wasn't satisfied with the ducksauce packet that came with spring roll so i tried to make it more thai with honey and spicy mustard instead. satisfying. but next time i'm ordering by number so they don't give me chinese food instead of thai food. i was really craving thai beef basil that day.
2nd time: much better...they got my order right, got here real quick, and I went into the place, only to find out they only take cash (daggonit!) went to the bank on the way home and ordered in.
beef basil: good.
chicken green curry: very good.
If I had a full time job with full time income, I would bring friends here even on non-lunch special times; )
This place really does look nicer than 2B Thai. We really needed a place like this on this side of the neighborhood. And I think they listened a bit to the thai person's review on their comment, and made the curry dishes a bit more authentic with a bit more heat. (tried the red curry on my 3rd time ordering and it was extremely good!)
Advice: ask if they'll make it more spicy and authentic for those of us (myself included) who can handle the heat!
This has been a great addition to a neighborhood starving for good food. The staff is friendly and quick. My favorites are the chicken larb salad, which is a great choice during the summer, and the kee mow. I only have 2 complaints. The appetizers never seem to be hot. Tried most of the options over many visits and they always seem just warm. The entrees come steaming hot, but not the appetizer. Don't know why?
And the 2nd thing... I like that they have seats outside, but can they move the garbage cans SOMEWHERE else? They don't smell, but who want to sit next to garbage.
Whoza! Watch out....
Kensington is finally getting some sit down restaurants and man does it feel nice. Typically Kensington maintains scads of short-order Chinese food holes and greasy taco stands aplenty, but here is a brand new place opening in Kensington that deserves some praise. Thai Tony's is a small place serving worthy Thai food that actually feels like a restaurant. From there sheik square plates holding delicious Pad Gaprow to the hip symmetrical designs on the wall, this place feels like it should be on 5th ave in Park Slope.
There is no liquor license, but the friendly staff caters to bringing your own booze, which there are several delis all adjacent to this hideaway that have good beer. The food taste fresh, The vegetables fresh cut, and the service is as good as the refreshing Thai Ice Tea. I highly recommend this place, it looks like Chili Basil not a block down the road finally has some competition...
ordered here when i was away from the fortress of awesomeness known as the LES! there seem to be a lot more options opening up in Kensington area...this being one of them.
for good THAI food made relatively quickly, this is your place. i will remark the takeout menu is well-designed and not one of those crappy generic ones made at Kinkos. the person picking up the phone was friendly, intelligent, spoke English...we ordered the curry puffs (YUM), the asian wings (which were actually chicken wings not those mutant-small ones sauteed and were quite tasty), the ribs (DELICIOUS), the basil noodle dish (which was simple and good, nothing mindblowingly) and one of the rice/coconut/cocholate desserts (good if you are a sweet tooth and desire something off-the-beaten path). the bill came out to about $30 for two people and lots of food....great bang for the buck.
one thing i will remark is the food was not overfried or permeated with lard...so if you're looking for food that is your typical greasey takeout...this isn't the place for you. from what we tried, the food was light, tasty, and definitely hit the spot on a lazy Friday night. and delivery was quick as heck!
i would definitely put Thai Tony's on your speed dial for outstanding eats at low prices.
Came back for seconds...this time I tried the green curry...OMG...so damn good...go here for good cheap food! It has taken over my top spot for delicious Thai cuisine.

Wow!
This place has some great Thai food...and I am loving that it is close to home.

I'll reiterate what everyone else has said - it's a great option in an otherwise pretty barren neighborhood. Fast delivery too, and the food arrives still hot. I definitely wouldn't travel to eat there, but I'm happy to have them nearby and we order from there pretty often. Their mussaman curry is exceptionally good. The pad thai, not so hot.
I've lived in Kensington my whole life and have always needed to venture down the slope for good food. Thank God Thai Tony's has popped up because the area is in need of better eats than whats available on Church Ave.
I am a fan of their Chicken Pad Thai and Spring Rolls. I also had the Beef Satay but the portion was small for the price and the meat was tough and chewy.
Chewy beef-on-a-stick aside, the staff is very friendly, they have a decent lunch special and their food is fresh and delicious.
I spent a wretchedly hot May in the south of Siam and had almost permanently put Thai on the back burner, but too much pizza and lo mein has made me fiend basil and coconut milk.
We started off with fried tofu and veggie dumplings. The presentations were nice (silly square plates) but we found neither to be that fun or exotic. Dumplings fell apart by looking at them and the tofu was merely fried and served with sweet chili from a bottle.
Our entrees came quickly, but we polished them off in a matter of minutes. The Thai salad was definitely on the small side, and although the peanut sauce served with it was passable, it was more suited for satay than iceberg. The red curry was too mild for my taste and the rice was served warm, not hot. We cleaned our plates, but the meal was unremarkable.
However, the place was extremely clean, service was friendly, and they kept my water full. Still, though, I'd never in my life walked out of a restaurant and gone straight to the nearest pizza hole for a cheese slice. Seriously, folkes, there's something wrong with that.
gud food, gud food. i always have to order the thai ice teas when i do take-awy. the delivery guys r always efficient and very clean cut n informational. what else is there to say...always they have utensils, napkins, and the delivery is packaged nicely.
gud for casual dates
*update
haha, i order jus now, the guys hav a computer now so they kno repeat customers.
I'm so torn -- as this is one of the only interesting restaurants super-close to my house, I feel I should support it, but it still needs to do a little work. Yes, we're all very excited to have a decent restaurant around, but a 5-star rating is misleading.
The curry and "spicy" basil noodle were pretty bland and could have used a lot more flavor, and the curry puffs were a little dry. I'll try ordering our main dishes "spicy" next time, and see if that helps.
This place was disappointing despite the low standards I have for Thai in Park Slope. When I order Thai food in my neighborhood, I'm not expecting amazing authentic Thai food. If I want that I'll go to Queens. However, sometimes you just want to have some pad thai and unfortunately Thai Tony's let me down.
I've always found this place to serve consistently tasty and thoughtfully prepared and plated dishes. I love spicy foods and have never been let down by their spicier curries or spicy wide basil noodles. The volcano chicken is also a wonderfully flavorful dish. The people have always been really nice there too.
Ordered some Thai food -- we're Thai natives so the food is critically evaluated. Good execution, but poor flavoring. Would be better if they didn't try to cater to western appetites. While important to do so, it loses the quality that makes it unique if done too far. Kind of bland, even for western palletes. Be more adventurous!
Otherwise fantastic, and a great and authentic menu.
BYOB SPOT! I love the atmosphere, its like your in the city but your in your own brooklyn neighborhood. They are super friendly and nice people who work there. I LOVE their curry puffs and sticky chicken wings. BEST EVER! Their pleasant attitude and atmosphere keeps me a regular here.
Finally, a place I can call my own. There are few sit-down restaurants in Kensington, Brooklyn and to get decent Thai food my favorite spot had been Siam Gardens on Court and Amity. But Thai Tony's changed all that. The panang is wonderful with ample sauce and just the right heat you ask for, and the fish, particularly the salmon, rocks. On the down side, you gotta pay in cash and if you're not carrying enough to give your butt sciatic pain, then you better get thee to an ATM, not because it's expensive, but because you might eat more than you thought you'd have. Since there's no alcohol license as yet, (and I heard they're even getting that as well as credit card business soon--I pray), I suggest a nice brew from the grocery next door, and the restaurant will gladly uncork it (kidding) and pour it. Their Thai ice tea is to die for and the price is to gloat over. The service is friendly, fast, and they don't rush you at all. There's even a small amount seating outside and with the threat of the West Nile virus a memory, well, why not?
Thai Tony's is inexpensive but worth much more and I recommend it without reservation (and you don't even need one).
Finally - a Kensington restaurant with decor that's actually aesthetically pleasing!
I've come here a few times since this place opened last year. The Pad Thai is amazing, as is the Black Noodle (Pad See Aw). The drinks are really good as well. I had an iced green tea - very refreshing and not too weak. Food and drinks are served with actual dinnerware - a rarity in this neighborhood. Staff is very attentive and food comes fast. We never have to spend over $25 for dinner - and that's for two entrees and two drinks!
The decor is seriously something that's unheard of around here. It's quaint but put together. There are curtains and tablecloths. There's air conditioning inside but it isn't very strong so I prefer to eat outside on nice days.
I am really excited for everything that's been happening to this neighborhood recently. With the new renovations at Foodtown and Maki Sushi opening down the block from Thai Tony's, I've actually been staying near my neighborhood at night! Now all we need is a coffee place...
