We were huddled under an umbrella. it was raining and cold.
(sounds romantic doesn't it?)
what did we want to eat? spicy green curry. fluffy white rice. hot green beans tofu. and fried seafood.
Thai stick delivered.
Have you ever been asked to hurry up with paying your bill so others in waiting could get seated???
Have you ever had fake ethnic food - lacking the local flavor and authenticity???
Have you ever felt someone staring at you from a distance throughout the course of your meal and finding out its the guy working at the restaurant???
Yes, yes, and yes.
Save your money, save your disappointment and skip this joint!
We could of eaten at a better tasting Thai restaurant but thanks to my sweet fiance, he knew I wanted to eat Thai so we ate here. We could not find parking at Osha Thai on Geary so we resorted to this restaurant.
Pad See Ew with Shrimp - Tiny shrimp and the noodles were flat tasting. It did not have the "stir fry" goodness.
The combination fried rice was "Meh". The texture of the rice was not hard enough. Usually if you make Fried Rice, you cook the rice overnight and use the overnight rice to make fried rice. This makes the rice less flat and mushy.
I won't come back.
Service was good, large bar area with three flat screen tvs.
Decent and gets the job done.
Walked over last Sunday to order some food for take out. The menu is pretty standard for a SF Thai place. We had the tom yum soup with chicken and the beef salad.
Lots of couples sat in the bar area watching Sunday night football, where we too waited for our food. Lots of big screen TVs, plus another dining room area.
The food was prepared quickly, so I liked that.
Back at my place, I found the soup to be deliciously hot and spicy, just the way I like it. The beef salad was good, but not great. I much prefer the beef salad at Baisom...but still, it was good and easy.
My friend and I came here on Sunday for our first time. It was cold and rainy outside so Thai food sounded perfect. We ordered Pad See Eww wtih shrimp, a garlic and shrimp dish, fried rice, and sticky rice to our waitress who was extremely rude. There were only a few other tables booked so this type of service we received was very disappointing, She couldn't even fake smile if she tried.
The garlic shrimp dish was just awful. The shrimp was un-edible and there were pieces of the shrimp skin all throughout the garlicy paste part. The noodles and fried rice were good (minus the shrimp) not outstanding, But the sticky rice was worse than all because it was tightly wrapped in plastic wrap while it was steaming hot. That is just not okay. We told our oh so sweet waitress we want to send it back and as I tried to explain to her our reason, she grabbed the rice and said, "ok ok ok "and walked away. Jaws dropped. RUDE! They need to work on service here and get some information about food health.
Increasingly lousy food. The service is nice, and the dining room is spacious and not too noisy, but that is the only nice thing I can say about this place. Good Thai food is so easy to find, skip this place.
I have to write this while it's fresh in my mind. My friends and I just got back from this place. The service was awful. My dish arrived about a half hour or so before all of my friends did, which made it really awkward for me. Even the appetizers showed up after my entree. My friend who had ordered a beer had to wait about 45 minutes for it to show up, even after we had asked them twice.
We even saw a couple next to us leave their table after waiting about 45 minutes to order and not being helped.
After leaving them a 12% tip or so (which was a great tip considering the way they served us), the man came out to us on the street while we were waiting to cross, claiming that we didn't leave a "service charge." We told him one of the receipts was still at the table (which it was), and he continued to yell at us claiming that we were "cheap people."
While the decor and layout is fun and hip, the food and service doesn't really live up to it's exterior. Slightly overpriced, decent Thai food.
If you're in the neighborhood and want to watch sports without the crowd or noise of Harry's, this place is good. Big TV's, full bar and usually lots of seats. For dinner out? Not so much.
I have never eaten here. Only gotten drunk at the bar at random hours. Big TV's, mellow, full bar, plus food if you want it. High five.
I've eaten here in the past but this is my first review of the place.
Stopped by here for lunch, mostly as a last choice while it was pouring rain & alternative to the burger joint across the street.
In a last minute decision we got the lunch 'special' for a few extra dollars to include coconut soup & two eggrolls. We could have done without the extra food/expense, but we noticed it at the last minute while ordering & decided to 'go for it'. The soup was very thick, almost like a sauce...which made it taste like we weren't drinking soup. The egg rolls were hot (in temperature) & crunchy, but nothing extraordinary.
I had the green curry entree w/chicken & surprisingly the sauce in that dish was very watery, especially compared to the soup! The flavor was okay, but again, nothing special. It felt good to have some hot food in our stomach after coming in from the rain, but from a flavor standpoint I've had better & would not come back here any time soon by choice unfortunately.
Service was fine, but when our server asked how everything was & my friend mentioned that our entrees were watery, we got a blank look from her like she truly didn't know how to respond when people gave her feedback that wasn't necessarily positive.
Been here once and not a huge fan of this place. Friday night and hungry on Fillmore leaves you with less options though.
The menu has lots of yummy items but my BF and I decide to stick with a salad, the beef short ribs entree, the chicken wing appetizer and some steamed rice. We placed an order with our waitress who did not seem to care for her job (an older couple tried to flag her down and she she told them to wait), but our food took forever to be served. People who came after us had finished their meals already by the time we were served. Plus, our salad never came and it was never mentioned when I know our waitress took our order.
Food was good but not spectacular and not worth the price and service. Next time, I'll stick it out and wait for another restaurant on the Fillmore.
Thai Stick, you are okay.
I came here with a large group and they were able to accommodate us. We shared lots of dishes but none were extremely memorable. They do have fun cocktails, so it can definitely be a pre-party kinda of dinner on a budget.
We each paid around $20 for too much food, drinks, and tax/tip. I think that is a decent deal.
Just had my first and only visit there. Though the food was good. The service was HORRIBLE!! There were 4 of us and we walked in at 7pm on a Saturday. The place was dead. We were asked to sit and wait for 5 mins while they got our table ready. We waited 20 mins, others walked in (same group size) that were seated right away. When we were led to be seated, the server walked past the table, left the menus and walked back to the kitchen. We didn't know exactly which table was ours.
While we were trying to decide, a random server took the wine list and specials menu off our table and took it over to another table!! WTF?? We order our appetizer first from one server: eggrolls. Which were yummy. Did I mention the server tried to take our appetizers plates away before the appetizer even arrived!! She forgot we had ordered that!
We order our meals from yet another server. Three out of the four come out! Mine the Pad Prig was a no show. But I did manage to get my side of rice. It took a while to get a servers attention and ask where my meal was?? She said 2 mins which meant 20 mins!! She had FORGOT to put my order in with the 3 others at my table but she did include my rice. Everyone had already finished their meals and then watched me eat. By the time my meal had arrived, the rice was cold and dry!! Mmm.
We asked for a manager but apparently on a Saturday night they have NO manager on duty. What kind of circus is this? By the looks of it a bunch of monkeys run it. We did get my meal taken off the ticket but after recluctance from our server, who lacked any affect whatsover.
The food was good but not that good. The service was CRAP-tastic. I won't be returning there. BTW, we left no tip. Would you?
Oh Thai Stick.
Only 3 stars for you.
You have affordable lunch plates that start at $6.95. Rice included.
The beef in garlic pepper sauce, well, the cook must've salted this dish eagerly while forgetting to put some in the Tom Yum soup. Also, we ordered the soup medium spicy, but it was not spicy at all.
I also found it funny when I ordered eggplant stir fry (a vegetarian dish) and the waitress asked me: "what kind of meat with that?" I almost chuckled as I said: "chicken please"
Average thai food that comes with a better than average decor. The lounge/bar area is equipped with plasma TVs and lots of comfy leather seats.
If you're in the area and have got a craving for affordable Thai food, this is your spot.
I went to this restaurant with my friends on Thursday night. I love the atmosphere . The appetizer was great and the food was good. The waitresses were nice but the waiter looked angry at us and I felt like he tried to make us leave. That's just the one thing I don't like.
One word: COCKROACHES!!!!
I don't know what the deal is, but every time I've tried this place I'm disappointed, something just isn't right with the food.
I know, that's super descriptive and helpful right, "just not right", but sometimes that's all one can say. I've had thai food at so many other places so I have a general ballpark of how a dish should taste. At Thai Stick it's always just... off. And not off in a "oh hell yea, they make it the best" kind of way, but rather a "why the hell does this taste so weird kind of way". It's not like it made me vomit or anything awful, but out of the 4 times I've had food there I don't think I've ever finished my food and I can routinely beat down some thai food without leaving a trace. At least they have a full bar, that's 2-starable right there.
Sorry for the vagueness but something just... isn't... right.
Cockroach (actually cockroacheS) One ran across our table, I disposed of it, at the end of our meal another came to ask how the service was so I set an empty beer glass over ti to leave for whoever bussed the table.
Too bad about the cockroaches since our server was wonderful, she had good food suggestions, didn't seem fake, was very nice and attentive but not overly so - she was great, the cockroach was not. Also the food was pretty good for the price.
The other drawback was that there are as many TV's in this place as a sports bar! Is that really necessary while I'm eating dinner?
Here is what the SFDPH has to say about Thai Stick:
http://tinyurl.com/ydl...
Though if they didn't find any live roaches then they didn't look very hard.
COCKROACH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So gross!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Clean your place up people. My friends and I came here for a late dinner to find a cockroach on the wall behind me. I wanted to puke.
Don't let stars fool you,
Great bar, good service and food,
pleasant space; good thai-ms.
3-Star Food
5-Star for SPORTS !!!!!
I'm a sports guy and the most important thing when I watch a game away from living room is :::::: If I can HEAR and SEE what's going on. Thai Stick has 3 Plasmas at the bar; EXCELLENT Sound (meaning I can hear the game) and an extra 2 big screens (1 up in a private area ... go there to watch a LAKER/FOOTBALL GAME!!). There's plenty of seating, 15 at the bar, another 30 behind the bar, plus the private area. The food is ok. It's great bar food (Fried Thai food is better than buffalo wings and frieds ... so go here to watch the big game.)
ALSO !!!!! .... not many people go here for GAMES, so it's not that busy. DONT GO TO HARRY'S to watch a game, this place sucks to Watch or Hear a game. Nobody even pays attention. Crowded and faceitious.
At night, it's just ok to party. Different crowd every night.
Thai Stick has an akward use of space. Part sports bar, karaoke club, and dining it seems to struggle with its own identity. There is a lot of unused space which makes it feel lifeless. The food is your standard thai fare: pad thai, assortment of curries, and other vegetarian and meat-based dishes. Nothing remarkable about the place. In a city full of excellent Thai food it is easy to pass on this spot.
I was so hungry tonight I probably could have eaten my left arm. Instead I started by splitting the appetizer sampler with my hubby, which involved lots of hot friedness. How can poi be so objectionable yet fried taro root so delightful? One of life's great mysteries. The spring rolls were fine. I left the satay to Joel as I'm not one for peanuts.
Next, in the mood for noodles, I dove into a plate of pork kee maw. It was solid although the advertised chili was AWOL. Shortly thereafter my stomach realized how big my eyes had been and I gave up.
$42 for appetizers, entrees, a drink apiece, tax, tip, and leftover lunch for one.
Went on a Tuesday night, which was great because no one was there so service was fast. The waitress was not bad, had a sense of humor. Got the duck curry, which I was impressed by, tom yum kun, eh ok, fried thick noodle, tasty, and spicy lurb, green apple splatters the next morning, holy a**. I guess spicy really meant that.
Not too bad... not especially great either. I had the Panang Curry & Glass Noodle salad. Both were pretty good. Both were toned down for American palates (even after requesting them to be "spicy"), and they use Jalapeno peppers instead of proper Chili peppers.
Flavors were pretty good, service was just fine.
yayy 100th review!
i was pleasantly surprised by Thai Stick, passing the outside regularly i was never over eager to eat here but i went with a group and it was perfect for what we were looking for, simple, tasty and affordable. The drinks were awesome!! great mojitos and martinis which was another big surprise for me. we shared a bunch of dishes and i enjoyed them all, nothing stands out but i would come again for sure. i would give them a 3.5 stars
This review is based on dining here and getting takeout at least 20 times in the past year.
Pluses:
If you ask for something "Thai Spicy", they make it Thai Spicy :)
Tom Ka is good and authentic.
Bar has nice atmosphere & tvs.
Brown rice.
Minuses:
Inconsistent service. Sometimes service that is to the point of blatant ignoring......so that is, NONservice. I've had wonderful service and awful service here.
The bartenders have blatantly ignored our table when we were the ONLY ones seated on a Saturday afternoon. We had finished our drinks and kept trying to get the bartender's attention, but she just kept leaning on the bar, turning away from us, and talking to her friend. So, I got up and nicely asked for 2 refills. She was rude, must have been a bad day for her.
Sometimes when I get takeout, I am offered tea, or thai tea, and other times I am not. Wonder why it is inconsistent.
All in all, the food keeps me coming back. But I skip the pad thai. Go with their soups instead.
Kapkoonkah!
I was super hungry when I came here, and it STILL didn't do it for me. Service was *eh* and they were rushing us out (they even started turning out the lights). I understand wanting to leave (I too was once a server), but come on.
We had chicken fried rice, Parang curry (I think), and crispy tofu. The curry was watery, the chicken in the fried rice was not great quality, but the tofu was pretty good.
Sorry, but I've had much better.
Me: Hi! Er, can you feed me in 30 minutes? I have an appointment soon.
[In my head: HUNGRYHUNGRYHUNGRY]
Waitress: Mm.. what are you ordering?
Me: Salad.
Waitress: Yep!
Silver Noodle Salad
...so I could be "healthy" without eating a plate of rabbit food.
Lots of dressing, which was good but a little much. It's a warm salad that brings out the spicy citrus flavor, but something about it seemed slightly off. It tasted fine and the ground chicken went well with the strong dressing. Perhaps it was the mushrooms, which were OK but didn't quite belong in my opinion.
I did eat the whole thing, including the romaine lining the plate, and because it was 2pm pretty much had the place all to myself and wasn't uncomfortable eating alone. Kudos for feeding me really fast. If you need a quick bite to eat and don't want cafe food it's an easy stop.
Thai Stick on Fillmore has tasty soup and stuff, but the real reason I go there is because (it's convenient) I can people watch.
In one sitting I saw Tinna and Keane, Leif, Philip, and a slew of hotties.
Two stars deducted because they're super, super, super slow with their service.
Very mediocre Pad Thai. Rude waiter. No lime. Sad, after I was excited about having a special little lunch to take to work.
I did enjoy watching a waitress do a ritual in front of a photo of the King of Thailand, though.
Why am I too cheap to pay for $2 bus fare? That I will have to resort to Thai Stick on Fillmore for my dinner before I head off to work. I always get the pad thai. You can kinda judge a thai restaurant whether if it is hot or not on the taste of their pad thai. Well the only good thing about the pad thai is that it wasn't as oily as other thai restaurants. But the bad thing is that it was FLAVORLESS! I only tasted the chopped peanuts that they put it in. I asked them if they have provided a lemon wedge for me right before I left and they said 'yes' because I had a feeling that it was going to be bland! But when I opened to eat it, I can tell that they lied because there was no lemon wedge for me! I will def. not be here again.
This place is kinda confusing. The first thing you notice is that the sign out front boldly proclaims "2001 Thai Stick" as if it were some bygone pesudo-futuristic name of the restaurant (think Conan O'brien's "in the year 2000..." Turns out that 2001 is just the address on Fillmore street. Tone it down, it makes the place look cheesy.
However, entering the restaurant you are greeted with a surprisingly pleasant decor (borering on hip). There is a large bar to the left side of the place, and a straight dinning area to the right. Not so cheesy.
The strange thing is that on weekends, this place brings in a DJ, dims in the lights, and almost becomes like a dance club... except that nobody is ever dancing and the place is usually empty. Strange.
The food is surprisingly good and authentic. My close Thai friends vouch for this. I really like their pumpkin curry and the cashew chicken is also very good. Not as spicy as I would like, but decent enough.
Given the the food is good and it is one of the few places in the area open late at night, it gets four stars. It is too bad that it doesn't get enough credit for its strengths.
I think the food is pretty decent and the price is alright. I got the duck curry. The flavor was good, and I liked the spicy-ness of it. Definitely stronger than I've had at some other Thai places. The portions are adequate. I think I would have given an extra star if they didn't charge $2 for rice. It should be included in a curry dinner. They are able to accommodate larger groups which is great. And if you want some Thai food and a beer and watch some sports, then this place is really good!
Just don't go here. There are so many better Thai restaurants in this city that there is just no need for you to go to this one.
The service is BEYOND slow.
I ordered a dish and they brought the wrong thing out and then acted all inconvenienced that I asked them to make the dish that I actually ordered. Thankfully they did it, but they weren't nice about it.
Anyways: the food isn't all that great, not terrible, but not great. The decor is pretty cool though, hence the 2 stars.
Go somewhere else.
The food comes really quickly...if they don't forget to send your order to the kitchen.
The Pad Thai is tasty...if you can excavate it from underneath the bean sprouts they pile on top.
I'm probably being a bit hard on this place, but I can't think of a better word than "meh" to describe my experience.
Mediocre Thai in Swanky Fillmore.
I imagine it's tough running a restaurant on Fillmore Street. It's probably expensive to operate so I don't mind paying a little extra if I'm eating in this neighborhood. Unfortunately, Thai Stick hardly provides the service and quality of food to make it worth the trip. I'll admit the decor and ambiance is much nicer than most Thai restaurants. However, the food is ok, and I'd rather walk a couple more blocks to Jitlada for good Thai.
Had the pumpkin curry with chicken and it was sooooo good! The decor was nice and there was a lot of space. Lots os selection on the menu as well. The wait staff was friendly, but not that attentive. I like how if you ask for the dish to be hot it's actually spicy and not the pseudo spicy. Very yummy overall.
Thai Stick is your typical thai restaurant, when you first walk in, you feel like it's actually pretty nice -- dim lights, nice decor, full bar. And then you start seeing things like the huge portrait of the king of Thailand and the hostess drinking a boba milk tea and you're like: "hmm ok i guess it's not that fancy." There's actually many contradictions in this place: nice square plates, but cheap tables; fancily dimmed ambiance, but the place is called Thai Stick. Honestly, there aren't many bad things to say about this place -- the food is actually pretty decent and the service is fast -- but there just isn't anything that really makes this place special.
We ordered the fried tofu, the eggplant w/ ground chicken, and the pumpkin chicken curry. I though the fried tofu was really tasty and it comes with dried basil leaves which I thought had a really good crispy texture that I've never tasted in basil leaves before. The eggplant was a bit tasteless, so I didn't really eat too much of that. The pumpkin chicken curry was good -- not overly saucy & heavy -- but I wish it came with more pumpkin. It kind of felt more like a soup than a curry.
All in all, it's a decent Thai restaurant that I would probably go back to again if I happen to be in the Fillmore area.
I've always been annoyed that this location gives equal importance to their address number as to the restaurant name in its signage. Looks like it's called, "2001 Thai Stick." A space odyssey? Me thinks not. Regardless, a visiting friend wanted Thai and it's close to my 'hood, so we gave it a whirl. The Tom Yum soup was really, really good, but everything else was pure meh. The Pad Thai noodles were mushy and gelatinous, while the Pumpkin Curry (which sounds fabulash) was so bland that I actually think I yawned before swallowing. For whatever reason, they seem to have a following, but I won't be back.
