My thing is that I wouldn't bother rating a place that wasn't worth at least four (4) stars. Well, this a default.
I had the day off today and I have a new thing of trying lunch menus. I made the mistake of going with my friend who likes to make me order things I wouldn't ordinarily order. Ordinarily, my judgment of a fine Thai restaurant is how well their Pad Thai tastes, that being their most basic and quintessential dish. My friend kept nagging and harassing me to order something other than a noodle dish from the typically scaled down and interchangeable (chicken, pork, beef, tofu) lunch special menu. He distracted me with banal banter before I placed my order and as we waited for our entrees, over a so so salad (with decent peanut sauce actually) and spring rolls, so much so that I was surprised when the sweet server guy brought out my entree. It wasn't that I was even thoroughly disappointed with my Pad Prik (pork with spicy pepper and garlic sauce) and white rice, but that I was craving and would only be satisfied with a kick arse Pad Thai!
I've had Pad Thai from Sesame before, and my actually returning to Sesame proves that their Pad Thai is phenomenal.
Don't let my 3 stars deter you from this fabulous place with their fabulous service. My issues with Thai things other than Pad Thai shouldn't discourage you from their decent menu (my friend's red chicken curry was very good and nicely spiced, and not to mention, again, their fantastic Pad Thai!).
Yelp really needs to add the half star to their rating system. The place deserves a 3.5 because it's a nice place for casual dining yet I'm not really a fan.
Decent thai food with ok price. Better than the thai places on Myrtle in Clinton Hill. I tried the Pad Thai (yeah yeah I know this is like Chow Fan/chinese fried rice of Thai food) and it was actually nice. M. had deep fried red snapper in bean, veggie chicken sauce. The fish was big enough for his appetite and the sauce was pleasant and not too salty. Singha beer was only $4.
The staff were friendly and service was quick.
Had not intended to eat here, but was in the area and in the mood for thai food. If not for the relatively high $, this place would get 4 stars. Ordered straight forward dishes of pad thai and spicy basil. The dishes were prepared rather quickly. The pad thai and the spicy basil dish were both solid, though $8 and over for a thai dish is a bit much for any thai food.
This is our take-out place for Thai food. Spicy noodles are tasty. The curries are awesome (although the Massaman curry sometimes is short on peanuts). When I am sick, I live off of their soups.
So, yes. We do a lot of take-out from there.
But, the dining area there is handsome enough to eat in as well - and they serve beer. Beer!
Friendly service. Good food. Decent prices. If only they had a DJ and a cavernous space, they could put (here comes my barb) Joya out of business.
A solid 3.75.
Pad See Ew with shrimp-the ingredients were fresh-this establishment obviously changes their oil frequently ( a good thing) and there were 10 shrimps-a lot of times you order shrimp and get 3 but 10 WOW!!!!!!!!!
I would order here again heck I would eat here again.
WAAAAAAAAY better than my meal from joya a few weeks back.
Went for lunch -- it was affordable but I found my dish (chicken with mushrooms) to be too salty.
And the lunch special is def. lacking in amenities (no side dish/soup?). I did like how my rice was shaped into a heart though -- that was very sweet.
Just got back from lunch at Sesame and it was delightful. Friendly waitress (and not just to me but to everyone who came in), tasty spicy noodles with veggies, husband had some chicken curry thing which was also well spiced. Whoever said this food is bland certainly did not order what we did! All in all, a damn fine lunch.
There's something mesmerizing about the incandescent orange of Thai iced tea. It draws me in, gladder than a hummingbird to a gladiolus, and sets me up for the savory flavors of the coming cuisine. Maybe that's the point, and I remain, as I always have been, occasionally obtuse to the obvious.
Against the mushrooming community of restaurants on Smith Street -- every time I walk down the strip, it seems as if at least two new eateries have popped up -- Thai Sesame really doesn't look all that spectacular. Their nondescript, slightly aged awning and fairly staid interior scream average, if in fact average could be screamed. And they don't always smell all that pleasant. But again, here is a restaurant that does little details well...
Service is rapid, every single time you stop in. The soups are spectacular -- the ginger variety in particular, as it presents a comforting assortment of vegetables in a broth that would be quite mild, were it not for the bright rasp of its freshly shredded namesake.
Rice is served beside the entrees, molded into a cute little heart -- an action that requires just a few additional seconds in the kitchen, but it's a gesture that promotes smiles. And they have yellow curry. I have no idea why the yellow variety feels such a find in some Thai restaurants, but being more of a carrot fiend than a rabid Bugs Bunny, I gravitate to this as well.
I give too many restaurants four star ratings. Thai Sesame does not quite deserve four (the curries can from time to time contain enough sodium to draw water out of Tutankhamen's mummy, and sometimes flavors seem a bit muddled), but the restaurant is better than average, and its prices are astonishingly low. I therefore feel a three star rating would be unfair.
This is an ideal lunch stop, and a pleasant, informal place to pop in for grub at any other time. Oh, and they have great Thai iced tea.
in a cheap mood?
Sesame is a great pick if you're looking to spend less than $30 for two.
It's been around for a long time which means that their rent is probably much less than some Smith St neighbors and they don't have to charge as much.
Good dishes: the pad thai is solid and the Tom Gha Kai (coconut soup with chicken) is stellar.
Not the most awesome Thai I've ever had, but pretty good nonetheless. The curries are absolutely loaded with meat and veggies. Usually Thai places will give you a huge container of delicious sauce with maybe 1/3 of it devoted to the actual curry. Not so at Thai Sesame.
Prices are fair and they're really friendly when you call for take-out. One of these days I'll go back and try the Thai iced coffee William O. is so excited about.
This place gets three stars because the menu seems really round-eye-friendly, which is kind of boring. I didn't see any really unique or interesting dishes, but for typical New York Thai take-out, it's fine.
Honestly, the peanut chicken I had was pretty good, but I've had WAY better Thai food. The mae grob was soggy instead of crispy, and the rice was dry and crumbly instead of moist and sticky. An entirely unremarkable, but well-priced, meal.
Bland thai food. I've tried about 8 of the entrees by now. They are all OK, but honestly, you can get way better in NY so try elsewhere.
I like Thai a bit too much, yet I can appreciate the difference in cooks. They have really good soup here. I also love the Panang Chicken and sticky rice, hmm hmm. I ordered take out from them everyday for a week till I got sick of Thai, will return in the fall. Their seafood soup is so tasty hmm hmm...
I should have stock in this place. I get take out at least once a week. It arrives quickly, steaming hot and delicious!
Eh. I think there's way better Thai in the area. The pad Thai was sorta bland and smooshy. (Don't get me wrong, I still ate it). But I'd go to em Thai any day over this joint, which doesn't seem much different from Lemongrass or other McThai spots.
I like this place. It has a simple, but pleasant atmosphere. Joya has the best Thai food, but this place is great for $5 lunches in reasonably sized portions. I wouldn't go out on a date here, but I would go with friends for some eats before a night of hard drinking. Probably also great for takeout.
Good, solid Thai food. They have a good lunch menu, priced at $5.25, but it doesn't include a side, just the dish and rice. Dinners are nice, and thay have some occational unique and delicious specials. They serve rice in the little baskets, which is oh so quaint. The one outstanding item: the Thai iced coffee. It's huge! And I'm a man who loves his Thai iced coffee. This is why I go. Now why will you go?
