I sat down here for dinner and ordered the Drunken Fried Rice.  Now, I can stand a bit of spice, and I'd imagine that spicy food in Thai cuisine is pretty damn spicy.  Unfortunately I was kinda disappointed at the lack of spice in this dish.  Maybe I should've asked to make it spicier.  I don't know.

Overall, the place was okay for the atmosphere, with the price being a little expensive (but I figure that since it's dinner and since it's DC, I suppose it's reasonable).  The service was pretty good though.

Chicken Satay (at the servers rec,) tasteless without the peanut sauce.  Moist, chunky, well cooked, but completely tastess.  Don't dip it in the cucumber vinegar - no flavor.

Drunken noodles with pork - noodles and sauce - perfection! "Spicy drag the noodles thru the bottom of the plate to sop up all the sauce" Good!  Pork - eh!  No flavor.

Could it be that the meats are either overly frozen or really, really poor quality??  Managers/buyers - try organic.  It may save the flave!

Servers, cooks and bartenders howlingly laughing in the restaurant and way back into the food prep area behind the swinging doors.  Not sure what was so hilarious for 30 minutes, but the way shy and sweetly innocent servers that helped people (Read: are you readddddyyyyyyy? Take your tiiiiiiimmmmmeeee,) were clearly playing a part.  Worse than the rowdy students seated next to me.  Uncomfortably so.

Will order carry out next time.

ps - pullleeeeez, remove the stems from the basil...it's just gross to chew and chew and have to get rid of it --errrhhh yuck!

One of the hardest parts about writing is to know what to delete. You write pages and pages, and then someone cuts your writing in half. This is for the best of course. It makes for a more concise and better piece.

This is how I feel about Thai Place. They have some really delicious curry and noodle dishes. But the overall impression is weighed down and overshadowed by some BAD lines. There are certain dishes I would order again and again, but it's so disappointing when you hit a bad dish. DISAPPOINTMENT. Their menu is too large, they should get over it and just remove the bad stuff from the menu. I feel like this is something all so-so restaurants have in common: tremendously long menus.

Bad Dishes: talay curry, thai place noodles

Always delicious.  Great place to go as a student.  Relatively cheap and prompt service.  Sometimes you need to make a reservation..especially on the weekends.

I was looking forward to trying their unique drunken fried rice but they messed up my order and gave me drunken noodles.  It was still good, but disappointing I didn't get what I wanted.  I was too far away with my take out order to turn around and wait for the correct order to be made. The wide noodles were tasty and not too greasy, but it wasn't spicy at all which I thought they would be so I added some Siracha which gave it a nice familiar kick.

2nd Edit: OK, I do have to put out there that they credited me for my meal and offered me $10 if I decide to try them again. Not sure that I want to but still, that was nice of them.

EDIT: I was writing the below review right after I ordered some pad thai from here. Not only did it take them over an hour and a half to bring my order, when they did and I started eating it there was a beetle in my food! I called back and told them I wanted a refund and they could come get the food to see the bug if they'd like. GROSS. terrible, terrible.....ARGH. I guess my search for good thai food continues.

So far, this is the best Thai place i have found on my quest for the best chicken pad thai in DC. They also deliver, which is a plus, although if I order $10, they tell me I have to order at least $15 for delivery. Another time I ordered about $13 and they told me I had to order $20, so....BUT, I still order from them because it's that good! It takes 45 minutes for the food to arrive but since I know this I make sure to order in advance. They accept credit card orders via phone, so it sort of makes me feel like I'm in NYC again...how I miss ordering toilet paper, cat food and the like...especially when it snows....ok, sorry, went off there. If you are looking for some good thai and you want to stay home but not cook, then give this place a call. Your order will probably give you two meals unless you are a hungry beast, in which case you still make out.

Thai Coast used to be my standby Thai restaurant in Foggy Bottom, until I discovered Thai Place.  Thai Place is consistently great, unlike Thai Coast which is only sporadically okay.  I have had the pad thai, the pad see ew, the pineapple curry, the tofu in peanut sauce, the golden triangles (fried tofu with dipping sauce...what's not to love?) and every item has been great, whether ordered in the restaurant or for delivery.  The prices seem consistent with similar restaurants and the service is good.

I get the same dishes at Thai restaurants all the time - the pad seew with beef, the shrimp pad thai, and sometimes the drunken fried rice. For dessert, I may get the mango and sticky rice. I often go from restaurant to restaurant, judging the eateries by the first two items I mentioned above. Of all the places I've eaten, Thai Place has THE BEST pad seew with beef and shrimp pad thai. The portions are generous for the price you pay. If you go during lunch, you'll pay a little over $10 with tax.  Oh, and if you want to order anything else, I can't speak for those dishes because I never order them.

Service is pretty good. I often judge wait staff (for tipping purposes) by how quickly my water is refilled (since they didn't cook my food and I need to tip by service speed and friendliness). Your food also comes out pretty quickly.

Wait time is also not that bad, unless of course you're coming to Foggy Bottom for monumental events. In that case, you may wait 20 minutes or so. Pretty good, right?

This place is the best thai place in the DC area. I've tried my share of restaurants here, and have been utterly disappointed.

For starters, the chicken satay, curry dumplings, and fried tofu are great appetizers.

For your entree, the pad thai (I get veggie, chicken or shrimp) are all very tasty. The beef pad see eww here is awesome! It's spicy and has a nice slightly sweet flavor. The curry's are all pretty good.

If you like thai, I would definitely come here.

So so bad. Unless you're stuck in the area and need to eat Thai food, avoid it. Sadly, I admit I still eat here just for that reason.

Things that bother me:
1) the bubble tea, although advertised in the window, is awful
2) the food portions are really dinky for the price
3) once I ordered the shrimp pad thai. For $4 more, I got 4 pieces of shrimp. really???

This place is one of my guilty pleasures.  I don't want to tell you how much I like it.  During GWU years, this was the site of outings with a friend for cocktails, cheap food, and gossipy updates about ourselves.

My favorite drink is the Bangkok Parasdise.  Sweet, but not too sweet and just a bit of fizz from champagne.

There is something about the way they do curry here that I just love.  It's got enough spice to it, while still creamy.  I've had different curries from many regions and I just like the coconut milk to spice ratio they have going on here.  My three top dishes here: green curry chicken, vegetable green curry, and chicken lemongrass.

Their fried rice, pad thai, and drunken noodles are also very good, just not my favorites.  I had the fried bananas here once.  They were surprisingly great.  I usually don't like fruit to get in the way of my dessert but they way they were cooked allowed the sugars in the banana to caramelize.  With a touch of honey they were delicious.

I like this better than Thai Coast (more expensive and not as good), Thai Tanic (long walk and not as good), Thai Phoon (metro ride and not as good), and The Regent (carrot crazy, bad service, and not as good - see my review).

Random story time: I came here once with a Chinese friend years ago.  Normally, they like to pretend they don't have chopsticks.  This time the server gave them automatically to her and skipped me(if you can't tell from my picture, I'm white).  We were both speechless for a bit.

Random rumor:  Years ago, they used to encourage GWU students to order drinks and put it on GWorld, thereby "Charging it to your parents."  Nice.  This seems to have changed in recent years.

I would say this is not a good place to bring children because, well, it's customer base is mostly GWU students. They will probably misbehave around your children and not appreciate your angels.  However, if your kids will eat Thai food, I suppose there worse things.

Delicious-the best cheap Thai food in the city!

I'll admit, I always get the Kee Mow (Drunken) Noodles (extra spicy!), but why look to anything else when you've found perfection?  Unlike many other Thai restaurants in DC, the veggies are not dripping with grease or overcooked.  The peppers and sprouts are crispy and crunchy, blending well with the soft rice noodles.  And for $9, you have enough for at least 3 meals!

There's a great variety of appetizers, soups, and entrees, but the Kee Mow is where it's at.  Eat in the restaurant and pair it with a Mai Thai, or carry it out for comfortable noshing.  SO delicious!

Your standard Thai food with quick service. The panang chicken/tofu entree is what I recommend. Skip dessert, but have a cocktail. Very fun and colorful drinks to share with all of your college friends.

It's pretty consistent and solid with quality and quantity. They should start their own chain of restaurants.

I love panang tofu and chicken, and this is a great place to get both. I've also had most appetizers, pad thai, green curry... everything has been solidly above average!

I've probably gone for lunch more than anything else, and when it's busy, it can be pretty annoying. I've stood in the doorway for a really long time before anyone even stopped to acknowledge that we were there (several times). And then it can take FOREVER to get your order in, and then FOREVER AND A DAY to get your food delivered to your table. So, don't go right at 12, or do go when you have an hour and a half to kill - then you won't have an issue.

Weekday early dinners are usually easy to manage.

Otherwise the service is friendly, the food is good, prices are on the low end, and the atmosphere is comfortable.

I have to admit it - I love Thai Place.  Being a GW alum, I'm quite familiar with the place and have eaten my fair share of Thai Place takeout (as well as eating in the restaurant).  I'm a big pad thai fan - the first time I ever tried pad thai, it was made for me by an actual Thai chef.  Thai Place's chicken pad thai actually tastes pretty similar, which I love.  Bad pad thai could be greasy, but Thai Place's is perfect.  Perfect amount of peanuts, bean sprouts, chicken, and noodles.

The other great thing about Thai Place are the drinks.  They make all kinds of different drinks, and they're all so great, plus cheap.  There is a great happy hour as well.  I can't remember when, but it's probably pretty easy to find out.  Steep discount on the drinks!

i'm used to a generous heaping of noodles when i order pad thai.

but at thai place - the pad thai that appeared in front of me was not a generous heaping....nor was it good!

it tasted like they slapped in some ketchup and lots (and lots) of sugar.

$9.99 for most of the noodle dishes (for dinner).

maybe they have good apps.  but gosh, pad thai is such a thai staple, if you're a thai restaurant, get your staples right!

I say this place has mediocre Thai food.  I've had several appetizers and entrees here before, and they were all pretty good.  They taste like any other similar Thai dish from another restaurant.  I would highly recommend eating here, rather than Thai Coast, if you have a Thai food craving (the only two Thai restaurants within the GWU vicinity I assume).  The food here taste better than similar dishes at Thai Coast.

The last time I came, I had the Thai Place Noodles.  The rice noodles in this dish tasted great!  The seafood (shrimp, scallop), in my opinion, made the dish a little too salty, but it was all good.  My friend ordered a spicy chicken dish, and she had trouble eating it because it was too spicy, so I helped her eat some of it.  That dish was good as well.  We had the tofu and peanut sauce (Golden Triangle) for our appetizer, and it was delicious and different in a good way.

I have been here a few times with friends and it is always decent.  Sometimes I stick with the normal pad thai but occasionally I get more adventurous and go for a curry dish or the ginger stir fry.  The beers are good too.  The only downside is that somehow I always end up spending more money than I thought the meal was worth.  In general I like thai food though and I don't know of other thai restaurants that are as conveniently located to GW.

The food was about as exiting as the originality of the restaurant's name [yes, sarcasm intended], but hey, dishes were dirt cheap and palatable--so why not? I'm a student, I can't have high standards.
Ambiance: dark, quiet, relaxing (AIR-CONDITIONED, SCORE!...sorry, not an East-coast native but a dry/sunny CA kid).
Service: fast delivery, but check took forever.
Portions: just right (for an Asian female anyway).

Thai Place is a college student's paradise. It's basically on GW's campus, it's relatively cheap, there are lots of tables for any size group, from 2 to 20.
I love it! It's the best Pad Thai I've had in DC yet and I've tried it from a lot of places. Also, the drunken noodles are delicious. Sometimes the service is a bit slow, but the food it definitely worth it. Also, they deliver to GW! It's grand!

I came here a few times for lunch during the week. Everything about this place is just average; a good place to grab quick lunch.

The food is not bad, just, eh~ OK. I had flat noodles stir fried with seafood (I think it's called Mee Kow, not sure). It was a bit too sweet and too salty.  The restaurant is small and does get packed during lunch. The service is slow and can sometimes take forever.

It's just an easy place to go for lunch since its only 10 minutes away from work. I would go back just for convenience, not for anything else.

Mmmm, peanut sauce.

Went to Thai Palace with my friends Travis and Randy for dinner tonight.  I'd been craving a good plate of curry for a while now, so when Randy made the brilliant decision to choose a Thai restaurant over TGI Fridays, I happily supported him.

The place felt a little cramped, but that might have been because of the hordes of people in the restaurant. Must be a popular dinner spot. Large groups of student/professor types occupied the tables and booths around us.  But despite the crowd, the service was super efficient.  Our waitress came up to us within moments after we sat down, and hovered near our table until we ordered.

Randy and I both got the Panang Curry, which came with our choice of meat in panang curry, peanut sauce, coconut milk, and steamed broccoli garnished with basil leaves. Travis, who is allergic to wheat, got the Pad Thai with rice noodles, stir-fried chicken, egg, bean sprouts and ground peanut.  Within what seemed like only 10 minutes of ordering, our food arrived.  The Panang curries came generously heaped in large bowls, prettily garnished with basil and pieces of red bell pepper.  Travis' pad thai was nicely arranged on a giant flat plate that looked like a frisbee.  Everything looked yummy.  A+ for presentation.

Mmmm, peanuts.  For me, the best part of Thai food is the peanut sauce. I dont like peanut butter, but rice and meat and veggies drenched in sweet peanut sauce and savory/spicy curry is pretty much the best comfort food ever.  My Panang curry was delicious and damned comforting.  The sauce was the perfect thickness, and the flavor was slightly sweet and very savory from the peanuts and pork. Yummm!  I wish my serving of rice were larger, but overall that curry was just what I needed to take the edge off before frantically studying for finals.  I wanted to try some of Travis' pad thai, but it was gone almost before I'd eaten half of my dish.  Must have been pretty good.

5 stars for food and atmosphere, -1 for over-solicitous waitress who hovered too much and leaned over my plate constantly in her eagerness to refill our water.

I don't have much experience with Thai food, but what I had was really tasty.  I had the chive dumplings, which pleased me and my veggie friend.  For an entree I had the Siam Steak, which was nice and SPICY!  The $2.50 happy hour beer was nice, and sitting outside on a beautiful spring evening was a dream.

Good service, water glass stayed full and the waiter always smiled.

Having spent a good 21 days in Thailand last summer, I feel like Thai Place really does a great job with the dishes they serve there.

I really suggest the Panang Curry with tofu or seafood.  It's amazing.  I usually get it as spicy as possible, but if you're not a fan of spicy foods, you can always get the more mild massaman curry.

The atmosphere is pleasant, but since it's right on the edge of the GWU campus, the majority of people there are students who have figured out that Thai Place is one of the most lenient businesses when it comes to checking i.d's.  That being said, you might feel uncomfortable eating there on a weekend night unless you're willing to brave rowdy college kids.

I'm usually so stuffed after getting dinner here that I can barely fit through the door frame, but if you somehow managed to pack it away and are left wanting more, go for the desserts.  And let me tell you, if bliss were a food, it would be a heaping helping of sticky, coconut rice goodness (aka mango sticky rice) and a Thai iced tea.  Ohhh man.

Ok, so food poisoning aside....why the hell does everyone like this place so much???????

Sure it's cheap, but would you eat dog crap for dinner just because it was cheap??

I eat Thai food 4-5 times a week and there is nothing good about this place.  The food is NEVER spicy.  All the curries have a faint hint of soap.  The noodles are greasy and the service is terrible.  As well, I'm always freezing in the winter and boiling in the summer.  The spring rolls are fine, but how hard is it to take them out of the freezer and dump them in the deep fryer.  And god forbid you get adventurous and order off the specials...

Look people I don't fault your reviews, but you have just never had even decent Thai.  Try Mai Thai on 19th and then get back to me.

EDIT: Following writing this review, which I did within 30 minutes of eating there, I came down with food poisoning. I would not eat here again.

I went here after reading numerous reviews that it was really good. Umm...yeah, not so much. I was starving and it still didn't taste that great.

I ordered the Pad Thai, my favorite. Let's just say that I am a Pad Thai connoiseur. Thai Place was just not good. It was really saucy and greasy which I found very odd. It should have a light sauce but still a good amount of flavor.

It was fairly cheap. And they did specialize the order for me, but overall it wasn't great and probably wouldn't go back, even if I did I definitely would not order the Pad Thai.

I walked away thinking well the only good part about the meal was that I wasn't hungry anymore.

This place is fine for a quick lunch break if you are working or going to school in the Foggy Bottom area. It certainly is not the best Thai food I've ever have but not the worst.

The kitchen is very efficient and the wait staff is pleasant.  The pad thai is average, and fine for those days when you really have a craving.  I've specified "spicy" on a few of my dishes here and all they do is add a few red pepper flakes, which is not only disappointing but doesn't really add the spicy, smoky complexity to the dish that I am craving.

My favorite entree here is the panang curry, and it's the best thing I've had on their menu.  I order the chicken but ask them to add steamed tofu (which I pay an arm and a leg for, but it's so worth it).  The portion is quite large so I usually have leftovers for another day.

Thai Place also has a small, outdoor seating area that is nice for a sunny day.  I'd recommend this place for lunch but not really for a date night or a group of friends - there are lots of better Thai places in the city for that.  With restaurant options limited in the Foggy Bottom area, this is a regular for me.

Good food, medicore service.

A group of about six of us tried out the Thai Place on Friday night after hearing rave reviews.

The food was good and the portions were sizable.  (We especially liked the veggie spring roll appetizer and the shrimp pad thai.)

But the service left a lot to be desired with the waitress confusing drink orders, bringing out appetizers we didn't order, and mixing up entrees.  Everyone has a rough day once in awhile, so we may have hit the place on a fluke-night.  But come prepared for a little wait regardless, its a pretty crowded place on the weekend.

Thai Place is a pretty good place to grab some thai food if you are looking for a cheap quick meal. The entrees are priced at $10 for noodles $11 for meat dishes and $13 for seafood. Also their specialty drinks are all top shelf (Grey Goose, Bombay) and only $6. Don't come here for beer though at $4 for a bud and $5 for a Corona its overpriced. The food is good quality and consistent. It is not amazing but certainly does the trick. They also do delivery and take out which is nice.

This place has great food at incredibly affordable prices.  Actually it is just "THAI PLACE", there is no The in the name.  Anyway, I found it ironic that the people I were meeting could not recall the name of the restaurant.  They were just saying "it's a THAI PLACE, next to Mehran."

Food here is quality and dirt cheap.  Some lunch dishes are as cheap as 5.99.  Most recently I had the dinner portion of the Kee Mow Noodle, which was excellent.  It was Stir-fried wide rice noodles, garlic, chili, tomatoes and basil in house special sauce, and chicken.  It was spicy but not too hot, and had lots of tasty basil leaves.  My friend ordered the Pad Thai and an alcoholic juice drink, pinapple colada I think.

This restaurant is very long and narrow.  The service here can be slow. They do have an outdoor section on the sidewalk which allows you too look out at Penn. Ave toward Washington Circle or East in the direction of the White House.

i can't remember the last time i came here so this is more of a nostalgic review. thai place was the first thai restaurant i ever tried in dc. i may never return, but i'll never forget the memories!

oh, just messing. thai place is fairly mediocre, but thankfully the prices reflect that as well. i've had a few thai staples like pad thai and miscellaneous curries. the pad thai is standard, certainly not bad. soup, salad, etc. were all okay. my dish of choice is the roasted duck curry that comes in a delicious, savory broth along with tomatoes and pineapples. this dish can best be described as awesome. to be honest, i don't think i've had a better duck curry.

thai place is in a pretty good location. it's right around the foggy bottom metro so if you're on your way to georgetown it's right on the way. like i said, it's not expensive. the prices are standard. service is standard. i guess that's the word of the day for thai place. wait! i do remember something really cool about thai place (other than the name). they had all the screens at the bar tuned to the world cup. man, that was like 2 years ago.

After having had enough experience with this place, I'll say that you should only really go here if you don't care much how you're treated in a restaurant and only want a cheap fix of Thai food. (It's popular amongst GW students because of the convenience.) Sure, the interior's nice, and yeah, it's cheap, but the waitresses can give the impression that you're invading their space by dining at their establishment... which is a not a feeling I want to get if I decide to dine out.

I was considering 3 stars because the food itself is inexpensive for Thai and has been acceptable on almost every visit, but I'm gonna dock one because come on - there are just plenty of other choices in DC. Go somewhere where the food and the atmosphere's better. I'm picky about my Thai food. Their Thai Iced Tea is decent, though.

P.S. A previous reviewer was correct in saying that the tofu that comes with some of the dishes is weirdly squishy. It makes me sound like a bitter vegetarian but Thai restaurants should know their tofu, at least.

The Tom Yum here is pretty damn good and a lot cheaper than usual.  It was nice and spicy but not quite as good as the Regent.

I also had a veggie noodle dish, pretty good but greasy.  Also, it didn't stay in my system for long, if you know what I mean.

I'd say this place is good if you're in the hood and want some greasy thai.

Well, it's no thai coast, but if I really don't want to walk those extra four blocks I go here.  The pad thai is better here than at thai coast, though.  The drunken noodle is okay, though the fresh garden rolls are what I really enjoy.

This place is a quick and easy fix for Thai, and it's priced okay.  Not a bad option at all.

I love this place. For anyone who spends all day at GWU, this is a great alternative to the Marvin Center and Ivory Tower. It's not too pricey and it's an actual meal! The restaurant is small and narrow, but very cute. I usually get food to go, but even when I've eaten here the service is good.
All the dishes I've tried have been good (mostly the curry dishes). But my favorite is the Thai Place Noodles - seafood, fat rice noodles, and a light but a little bit spicy curry sauce.
