Review Highlights
The food here is very good. I enjoy their basil sautes and their tom yum ghai. I've also had the experience of going here with a group of about 20 people. They were very accommodating and served us well. I highly recommend for a group!
The price is a little on the high side, and the atmosphere feels more older and less chic. If that's important to you, then this isn't the place for you.
As a Thai myself, I'd vote this place the best thai food in Astoria. Why only Astoria? Because if I added all Queens or the whole NYC, Sripraphai would definitely take the #1.
Try Hoi Ob (mussel appetizer), I order it every single time I visit them.
The food was great. This is what Thai food should be.
The atmosphere is light and very serene. The wait staff is friendly.
The Phad Thai was awesome the best I've had in a long time. The Spring rolls were good too. We decided to split dessert and loved the banana and apple fritters.
I love this place. There are so many bad Thai places just within a few steps of this place. This is the best Thai on 30th Ave. Don't waste your time with the surrounding places. Trust me. The other places are closer to Chinese food than Thai. Nothing wrong with that, if you want Chinese.
I had the Basil Chicken. the flavors commingled perfectly.
I thought it was going to be a pricey restaurant, but appearances deceive!
The atmosphere is soothing, service is efficient.
Will definitely return.
This would be a one-star review anywhere else -- I give them two as "it's Astoria".
We've gotten takeout twice.
I will give them credit for modifying their soups to substitute veggie stock for chicken stock (a pesce-vegetarian in the party). The soups (spicy shrimp and a coconut broth) were tasty. The Shrimp panang, recommended as the best shrimp dish: eight super-overcooked rock hard tastless shrimp sitting in a very tasty sauce, nothing else in the dish. We basically filled up on rice soaked in the nice sauce.
Tonight got spicy noodles with seafood (tasty sauce, but ALMOST NO NOODLES! What is that? Fair amount of seafood though, from overcooked shrimp to mussels, relatively tender squid to fake crab and fake "something else entirely"). The Tofu Basil was dismal: hard, deep fried tofu sitting in a greasy basil sauce. We threw most of it out. The delivered rice was old and dry.
There is some TASTE in these dishes, but anywhere but Astoria it would be a big miss. Maybe your experience will differ from ours -- but for us, no more. So far the only places really worthwhile we've found in Astoria are: Seva, Brick and JJ's. We're "foodies" and lack of really good stuff is one more reason we're thinking of moving out of the nabe.
loves it!!
it looks fancy but it's not! i was hesitant to dine here because i thought the food would be overpriced... but i was pleasantly surprised! great service and super yummy food at reasonable prices.
if you're dining in, go for the mussels as an appetizer! you get a big bowl (enough for two to share)--the broth is amazing and it's served with the perfect dipping sauce. also, i really enjoyed the spicy noodles w/ seafood. i like a lot of heat with my thai and this dish definitely kicked my ass, in a good way of course! also, the duck was succulent and flavorful, delish!
what really got me was as soon as the food came out, i could smell all the spices and fresh ingredients. definitely the best thai in astoria. yay!
I finally found a new favorite Thai restaurant in my 'hood.
It's fancy - like Gramma's dining room fancy. Our napkins were folded! There was a china cabinet full of china in the back, and we had heavy silverware and some silver rimmed dishes.
The service was fantastic, polite, amazing.
The food, (the most important part!) was yummy! My spicy noodle had pleasant proportions of noodle, chicken and vegetable. It was spicy, but not so spicy that I couldn't finish the dish. The Thai Iced Tea was flavorful, unlike some places that just douse regular iced tea with milk.
I will be back, all the time, whenever the urge to eat delicious Thai hits.
Had dinner here about 5 times, nothing to complain about, food and service was good.. i usually go around 830 or 9pm during the week, so not really a huge crowd there... its my local thai spot.. good stuff
This is my go-to spot for Thai food near my apartment. The food is always fresh and delicious. I highly recommend the Panang Curry. The staff is so nice. I got take out a few days ago, and while I waited they brought me water and gave me a comfortable chair to sit in. Great food and great service!
This is good Thai food. The food is more savory than most other Thai places in Astoria. More of a focus on the meat and the vegetables with a more subtle and backgroundish sort of sauce. Their menu is also a bite more expansive than some of the other Thai places on 30th, leaving more room for something new- though I must admit, they do the classics very well.
If there was one thing i want to rave about it is the Fried Tofu appetizer. It's a classic Thai menu staple, though the Pavillion did it better than any other place I've had in the city.
Very friendly and prompt service in a classy dining room. It's up there with Wave Thai and Arunee (RIP) in my pantheon of excellent neighborhood Thai.
I don't know what all of the raves are about. I got the spicy noodles with beef. The beef tasted like the lowest quality beef you can get. Definitely something weird about it. The rest of the dish was okay, but the portion was not very impressive. Most shocking of all, their Thai Iced Tea is $4 for 16 ounces. That's highway robbery if I ever saw it.
Thai Pavilion is pretty solidly good Thai, that's for sure.
It has a surprisingly elegant interior and expansive menu. In addition to mainstays such as pad thai and several types of curry, there are also a lot of "chef's specials".
On a recent visit we sampled the fried tofu, which was decent. The peanut sauce was surprisingly tasty. We also started off with the fried vegetable dumplings, which were crispy disks of deliciousness-- chinese broccoli, but I'm not sure what else.
My pad kee mao (a sauteed noodle dish) was filling at best. The chicken was large pieces of actual breast meat, which I appreciated, but the typically spicy-garlicky-sweet dish tasted mostly like burned soy sauce. Both of my friends fared better: the massaman curry was so good and spicy, we ended up ordering a side of glass noodles in order to finish soaking up the sauce. My other friend ordered a shrimp dish of the chef's special menu.. I don't recall the name, but it was a sauce that contained garlic, basil and tamarind. It was good as well, and had more of the flavor I was looking for in my pad kee mao.
The service was excellent and the prices were fairly reasonable. One of the better Thai places in Astoria.
Thai Pavilion is one of my favorite Thai food places! They are very friendly there and their food is quite delicious.
My favorites are the Chicken Satay, Pad Thai, Thai fried rice with chicken or shrimp, anything with their tasty peanut sauce; and they have the best appetizers! Their fried vegetable dumplings are like nothing I've ever had in Thai food restaurants before.
Also, the desserts are worth trying.
If you go there for lunch during the week, the soup, salad and meal are all included in the price.
I agree Karen F. who suggested that they need to remodel. They have a good space but a good remodeling will be beneficial, specially considering that they are well located and all the good food places have remodeled in the last year or so.
Before Spice came into my life, I was a loyal customer to Thai Pavilion. I love the atmosphere, the waiters are always super nice, the food is so delicious....I just really do not have anything bad to say about this place.
It's good to know that even celebrities come to eat at small places like this, celebrities like Brad Pitt, Harrison Ford, etc...Their pictures are hung up on the walls.
How awesome right? I'm stil waiting to bump into Brad Pitt, one day one day!
This is solid but not spectacular Thai food in a pretty good location. The best thing my group tried was the fried vegetable dumplings. They had a crispy outside/chewy inside thing going on with them that made them very unique... we were fighting for the last piece!
I had a ginger/chili stir fry. Although my shrimp were a little overcooked the flavor was there in the dish. Service was spotty and the prices were a little high but not prohibitively so. In short: everything was good but not great except for those fried dumplings - that's where the action is at here.
Best Thai food I have found in NY so far. Trust me new places open up (esp in Astoria where I am from) but I always go back to this place. The food is incredible and the staff is seriously the nicest bunch of people you will ever meet! They will wait on you hand and foot. so sweet and accommodating. You wont get something you wont like. The food is so tasty and good and best of all cheap!!! I will continue to go here! Its my fav thai restuarant.
the pad thai here is awesome. very sweet flavor and peanuty. i loved it. the thai ice tea is a little watered down. the servers are all super sweet and eager to please, but unfortunately the management is HORRIBLE.
my friend took a recommendation of the server on a dish (she asked what was better between pad thai and fried rice and instead he said "order the *drunken man*"), which turned out to be too spicy for her to eat, so he took it away and remade it (she would have prefered a different dish but he didn't ask and made us think he was simply getting permission from the manager first)... still too spicy, but he said she would have to pay for a new dish if she wanted something else. when we asked to speak to the manager, she refused to come out. we sat there for 30 minutes asking for her (the poor server was frantic and wanted to just pay for it himself because he was scared to get in trouble), and finally had to resort to calling the restaurant from our seats because we could see she was answering the phones in the back, just so we could lure her out to talk with us. she still refused to take care of the food situation and finally said she would just comp our meals to get us out of there.
you'll have a great experience as long as you order something you know you like and be sure to give specific instructions if you need to send something back.
i'll still return...
Such a find!!!! If you are ever in Astoria - you can get great, quality Thai food served by a super-friendly husband & wife team at Thai Pavillion. They have set my gold astandard for Tom Kha Gai and Masaman Curry. (They put fresh green beans in theirs.)
LOVE IT!!!
So glad they are still in business after all these years and I wish them many more.
Note: Decor is a 3 or 4 star though - time for a re-model.
I am so grateful for Thai Pavilion, especially since Thai Angel recently closed. Their food is consistently excellent and their delivery /take out service is always accurate and fast.
I am fully impressed by the great customer service every time I walk into Thai Pavilion. I am always greeted kindly and handed a menu and seated while I wait for my take-out. Their pad thai is the best I've tasted in Astoria. While they are a wee bit pricey, I appreciate their excellent service and that's why I keep going back.
The chicken pad see-ew was too salty. It wasn' t like there was too much soy sauce that that's why it was salty. It was like they dumped a handful of salt into the dish. There wasn't much flavor as well.
I was massively disappointed that this was the highest rated Thai place in Astoria. Too expensive ($16.29 for 1 serving of tofu green curry and spring rolls). Too little food (the dish included: 2 pieces of green pepper, 1 piece of red pepper, 6 triangles of tofu, a little green curry sauce, and some bamboo shoots). The rice was undercooked. The spring rolls were drowning in grease. It was too little for too much. Good thing I live around the corner from Yajai!
Thai Pavilion has great service, tasty food and low prices.
The lighting was a little too low for it's own good. Looking at the restaurant from across the street, I actually thought it might be closed. It makes for an enjoyable eating experience but it didn't quite match.
I had the spicy flat noodle with pork, which wasn't overly oily like stir-fried noodles at a lot of other places. It was lighter on the pork than I would have liked, but still enjoyable. I really enjoyed the fried eggplant salad with pork. It was a relatively simple dish, but the flavors were well balanced and complimentary to each other.
The waiters are all very attentive. A little too attentive, some might say. One waiter was so eager to fill my glass with water, it looked like he was about to grab the glass out of my hand as I took a sip.
Overall, a great Thai place that I would recommend to anyone.
Their spicy noodles with beef was a good rendition of this common dish. I shall have to explore their menu further.
For a long time, I thought no Thai place could eclipse my first Thai experience. The combination of novelty and unique taste made quite an impression.
I think I might've found the one place that has the potential to surpass that experience. My coconut soup (you really should try it if you haven't already) was extra extra spicy, just like I asked and the chili flat rice noodles with beef was delectable. My mouth waters just thinking of that gorgeous meal.
The restaurant was neat and welcoming. The staff was attentive and eager to please. I'll be back soon and often.
I order from the Thai Pavilion at least once or twice a month. Honestly, it's a tribute to my self control that I don't give in to my urge every time I flip to that little lavender guy in my pile o' menus. It's no exaggeration to say that I could end up with chicken satay twice a week absent my stoic resolve to mix it up.
I love the satay, but add it only when I'm really hungry, because the entrees are plenty big. I often punt and get the reliable pad thai, but I just discovered the lamb curry, and might have a new fav. Unfortunately, this little dish is $16, which is much more expensive than some of the standard dishes (which are in the $9-12 range). And I usually get a Thai iced tea.
I've never been to the restaurant, but I find the phone ordering process very courteous and efficient. I never feel rushed, and I feel confident that they got the order, address and phone number right before I hang up. They even give a time estimate that appears to vary with how busy they are, and is reasonably accurate. Nothing compromises the convenience of ordering in more than wondering if they'll deliver at all, and whether they have the right address and phone number to let you know if something goes wrong. I don't have these little moments when I order from the Thai Pavilion.
Finally, the delivery package comes neatly stacked in sturdy containers and a special tough bag with a squared bottom, so spills and disruption are minimized.
Rather awesome. I resisted the urge to just order Pad Thai, and totally loved the duck I got. Cool atmosphere, fast friendly service, reasonably priced. Serving size was a bit smaller than I'd expect, but still reasonable (I was just super hungry).
This is my all-time favorite thai restaurant. When we first moved back to Astoria a few years ago and ate at Thai Pavilion for the first time, we were hooked. I have had a few problems when ordering delivery, though, but they always fix it. When dining in, though, the service is always excellent and if you go in there more than a few times, they remember you. We actually went for dinner the other night, after not having been in there for a month or two, and they actually remembered what we drank...good for them, a little embarrassing for us..haha.
Really great Thai food. Rich taste, great service, a little pricy but well worth it.
** 4 1/2 Stars**
Best thai in NYC. period. I deducted half a star b/c with their growing popularity their portions have become smaller and the food less spicy. I've been coming here since high school (and I graduated over 10 years ago). The Kow Mok Gai (sp?) was an early fave because of the curried rice w/ potatoes and the tender peanut chicken, then I graduated to pad thai, soups and curries, then everything else and by now I have probably had every dish on their menu. seriously. Appetizers are all delicious w/ the steamed dumplings being the tastiest app. The satays are perfect here and the peanut sauce is seriously addictive (forget how boring these may be). I'm always so disappointed if I'm ever in the mood to order satays anywhere else. Nothing is an afterthought here....food and service presented and handled with care. I wonder if they still have those vanilla turnover thingys for dessert? yeah those were dreamy. I remember when this place was a tiny hole in the wall with fewer than 12 or so tables...I'm glad to see that so many have caught on.
I absolutely love this place. Their Peanut Chicken is outstanding, their soups are delish, as are their dumplings ...well, I can't get enough of them. You should also try their Thai Tea - surprisingly delish and refreshing. You can't go wrong with anythin on this menu. You will have to specify if you do not want a dish to be spicy though. They are more than happy to oblige you. The place is located in a great area of Astoria, is extremely clean and offers great, attentive (but NOT annoying) service. For great Thai food, this is an excellent option and it won't break your bank.
I have been eating here for about 15 years (my parents first took me when I was little), and it has been amazing the whole time! While I spent the first five years eating only Khow Mok Gai, I have since broadened my horizons a bit to include everything on the menu. It's amazing. The fact that it is family owned and operated only makes it better, as they recognize us when we come in, and the service is fabulous. To definitely try: steamed dumplings for appetizer (the satay is also amazing), khow mok gai or bangkok lamb for entree, and thai pumpkin custard for dessert! It's relatively inexpensive for the quality of food and service they have, and once you try it, you will return again and again!
I went to Thai Pavilion based on a review I read here, and my husband and I had a lovely time. We walked from our apartment (it was a very night night, btw) and I was surprised to be greeted by a nice, clean, cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. Even the bathrooms were clean and smelling good! I ordered the clear soup with shrimp and the appetizer steamed dumplings. The dumplings were AMAZING, and the soup was good too but very spicy. I didn't remember seeing anything about that on the menu, but I might have overlooked it. My husband ordered a chicken curry dish, I had a taste and it was ok. Very attentive service the entire time. Overall, we both loved it and have found a new regular Thai place!
When my wife and I have the craving for thai we order from here and have them deliver. Reasonable price and tasty food. The steamed dumpling are F###### amazing. They are sweet and delicious. I always get an order of those as well as some thai iced tea. Have eaten in the restaurant 2 or 3 times and enjoyed it. Nothing stood out just average place.
I've been going to and ordering from Lee's place since she opened it many years ago. I've tried some of the hot Thai places in Williamsburg and find they are decorated nicer but can't match Lee's for food and service. Still the best Thai and one of my favorite NYC restaurants, period.
Yummy Thai food, attentive service, a great place to have in the neighborhood. The staff is very friendly - it gives the place a real neighborhood charm.
Some very delicious Thai food in a warm and inviting environment.
