I come all the way from Cali and I cannot resist having Thai food. I LOVE Thai food. Not surprisingly, I have to check out a Thai place in NY.
I came here w/ a few friends b/c it was close to where we live. I like their lunch specials, decently priced ($8) w/ a good amount of food.
The Chicken Pad-sew was pretty good, although the chicken was a little dry...
The decor was nice, more than what I expected for a Thai place.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this place to a friend.
I could eat thai food every meal, every day. Seriously. When I'm with my dad and my mom isn't around to cook or tell us what to eat, we pretty much do just that. Thai Market definitely is one of my favourite restaurants in Morningside, even though now I mostly only order take out from there. I have however been there twice for dining in and these were my experiences:
First time- on a first date in September '07. Neither of us had been there before as we had just moved to Columbia. We had shrimp in Thai basil sauce which was very good, and pad thai which wasn't dry at all and very flavourful. We did have to wait a while for a table but it was a Saturday night, so I really shouldn't complain about a half hour wait with no reservation.
Second time- in October '08 with the boyfriend. Ordered pad kee mao, and the Siam duck. I'm really picky about pad kee mao because when I was little it was pretty much the only thing I ate at Thai restaurants but this did not fail to please at all. The duck was also very good, and not overdone. However, when you order soda it comes in cute little 8 oz glass bottles that they obviously do not refill and cost way more money than they're worth. Other than that, had a great experience.
Haven't been back since then but I do regularly order takeout. Definitely recommend the lunch specials- an appetizer and an entree for $8. Granted you have to choose from their list of lunch entrees, but it's definitely not lacking anything I would want for an easy lunch.
If you've never been to the Morningside Heights area of Amsterdam Ave. You'll quickly realize the entire area is full of dives. Thai Market is the rare exception. I find myself going there just for the Thai Iced Tea, let alone the food. As a vegetarian they have killer choices and for the stuff that had a face at one point in its life they are quick to alter anything for you.
Side note for people that own a restaurant in the area...take some freaking pride in your places people. My g-d. Every place around there looks like homeless people coagulate at night. I mean have you seen the place across the street? El Rey de La Caridad? What an effing Dump! I would never set foot in that place. It the place doesn't look clean...I don't go in.
The last time I checked Thai Market didn't have any food violations. Can't say the same for El Rey de La CariDUMP!
Service very slow. Ordered for delivery and they never arrived, very rude on the phone. Do not recommend.

HORRIBLE SERVICE. So slow! In addition, when I ordered delivery they NEVER DELIVERED MY ORDER. I… Read more »
First off, hands down best pad thai I've had to date.
I also LOVE their vegetarian spring rolls and the fried banana dessert. The steamed chicken dumplings aren't bad, a little bland because they don't give you any dipping sauce. A friend of mine always gets a ball of sticky rice with peanut sauce, and that's delicious too.
The trick to fitting all this food in is to order the SIDE order of pad thai. It's $5 and just the right size.
The food looks and tastes goooooood. I always get pad see ew and I wasn't let down. :))
For lunch special, you can get an appetizer and an entree for $8. The portions aren't tiny either. It's a good amount that you can finish and be satisfied.
The place itself is located way upper west side so if you want to do something else.. you'd have to wlk or take a train but i really like thai market :))
Trendy and cute.
It looks like they put a lot of thought into the decor and little else. I expect Chinatown (aka non-existent to horrible) service in most Asian restaurants but not in the Upper West Side, sir!
Especially when they're offering items at above usual cheapy Thai fare prices and the amazing Wondee Siam is just across the street.
The employees were so fed up towards the end of the night by the high volume of people that they just threw in the towel and appeared to stop service.
Our server asked us if we wanted one dish at a time or everything at once--- we gave clear preferences to which dishes should come out first and he obliged happily. What happened? All our food came out at the same time, tiny portions are extraordinarily large plates that didn't all fit on our small table.
Fuq, it would've been so easy to wait just 10 minutes before firing out our main courses.
The dishes were all uneventful, I asked for hot sauce on the side. The little appetizers were sour and sweet, crispy and tangy---- it was almost like I ordered Thai Food from a vending machine, it tasted pre-packaged.
Sorry Thai Market, you're sexy but you're dumb.
Thai food (though slightly "americanized") beautifully presented in a trendy setting.
Even the tea was offered in a gorgeous iron kettle.
The only minor snag was that the black sticky rice dessert on the menu is no longer served.
Excellent service, excellent food, excellent price Serves food late into the night. A gem of a find in NYC!
I've been there a few times, the food is good at times, they don't offer many options. The service is ok, this is not a good place to go in a group, it's a little tight in there and it gets packed. I've had better Thai food, and I like having a lot of options.
Loves it!
It's pretty standard great Thai! Great lunch specials, quality thai-iced tea, okaaaaay apps, yummy entree, cute ambience, attentive waiter service. I mean, it's no Spice--but it'll take care of my UWS needs!
I miss Thai Market. It is definitely the best Thai food around Columbia, and, in my opinion, is still way better than the competitor that opened up directly across the street earlier. The green curry is very spicy and full of tasty vegetables. The pad thai is good. It loses a star because the service is only so-so and the portions are smaller than at similarly priced Thai restaurants. I want my pad thai to last me for two meals! Yummy thai iced tea, also.
The lunch special here is a serious deal. Definitely go there during the workweek and check it out if you live in the area.
YUM! I'm not so into Thai food, but I love this place! I love the atmosphere, the service, the food, the prices, the convenient location, the outdoor dining, the thai iced tea -- everything! They also give you good size portions; I'm always able to take home some of my meal for the next day. It gets a little loud, but I think Thai Market makes a great date location too..
The decor here is fabulous. And well, that was the most memorable part of the evening. That and the fact that we were seated immediately upon arriving--it was a Saturday night, what more can you ask for?
But oh, what a shame when our food came out. We had the veggie spring rolls, thom kha kai, and massaman curry. The appetizer and soup were alright, but our curry was more stir-fry than curry. I'm used to curry coming in a bowl, full of liquidy goodness that I would continue to drown my rice in. Perhaps this was a dry curry? The tapioca pearl in coconut pudding and thai iced tea moved my ehhh I've experienced better to an a-okay.
This place is definitely legit. Expansive menu containing stuff I haven't seen in most Thai restaurants in the US. It's noisy and has interesting decor. Pretty everything you want out of an authentic Thai place. The appetizer portions are reasonable but the real value seem to be the entrees. Of the three ordered at our table, all were very generously sized and delicious. I really enjoyed the duck, even with a stuffy nose (and thus less ability to taste than usual).
I've been a loyal fan of thai market for over a year, normally ordering from them at least once a week. But recently they have been charging me twice. They charged me once when the order was placed and once again at the end of the night with the tip included. I called and brought this to their attention and I was told that the first charge would drop off after a few days and it would not happen again. The charge did drop off but it happened again a week later. I called once again to express my concerns and I was told that I was wrong and this could not of happened again. What I believe to be happening is that they charge you for your order when you place it. Then you are charged again for the order plus delivery tip and then the original charge is voided. But the funds are still being deducted from your account for a few days until the void is posted. They should just be going back and editing the original chage to include the top. Just a word of advice, check your online statements when you order delivery from these guys to make sure they are not charging you twice.
Nothing wrong with this place. Solid typical Thai fare. Definitely worth a try either stop by and eat in or call for delivery, its all the same. Also the spring rolls were light and crisp.
Nice place with an AWESOME menu. Food is good as well, but let's be serious, of all the thai places in the city, I have been to better, with better prices.
I usually don't give restaurants bad reviews as food and eating are two of my greatest passions. And really the food is good and solid. But it was the service that put a bad taste in my mouth (not literally...maybe literally). Waiters couldn't bother to ask the 6 people sitting at our table to see who got what so they practically threw the dishes in front of me (who was the host for the lunch). The check was given in such a haste that the pen flew and almost drew a line on my new shorts. Why can't these awesome restaurants just train their waiters a little better?
Well...this is about as good as it gets. Reasonably priced food & when I ordered delievery, it literally got here in 25 minutes!
I think their appetizers are better than their actual entrees. I love their chicken satay, curry puffs and coconut soup. They have $8 lunch specials where you can get an entree and an appetizer, though the appetizer is usually a smaller version of the original. If you have to order an entree try to avoid chicken because it is almost always dry.
They have lychee martinis. And the green curry chicken is really spicy!
I decided to try Thai Market after a friend recommended this joint and it lived up to its expectations.
We started off with the calamari appetizer which was tasty as was the sweet and spicy dipping sauce. Also, one of us ordered the papaya salad which was spicier than most people's tastes but was perfect in my opinion.
Next up were the main courses, the ginger chicken w/ brown rice, pad kee mao with flat noodles and last but not least, the skirt steak. I would say that the skirt steak was the best of the three, although the dipping sauce came out rather salty so I skipped it.
I almost left without ordering the thai iced tea which would have been a big mistake...loved it!
Overall Thai market was a fun lunch spot and I would definitely come back for the duck or other tasty looking dishes on the menu.
(See the photo section for pictures from my visit)
I feel like I may have been beaten up.
But not because of this place. No, this place was the answer to my "lugging heavy shit from two different homes up a 3-story walkup" moving day yesterday (admittedly, it could have been a *lot* worse).
Two things made me happy: delicious Massaman curry and a frozen blackberry + rum type drink. Even my girlfriend pointing out that the straw was incredibly phallic (not to mention bright orange) could put a damper on my spirits. I'm even willing to get over the bright red beach umbrellas hanging from the ceiling over the bar. The curry was just that good.
One thing made me not so happy: they told us it would be a 10 minute wait when it was more like 20 or 25. Boo.
Ok...so I tried their take-out. Still good, but disappointing after my first experience. Their phallic drinks must have a positive impact on the taste of in-restaurant dishes. Or maybe it was because the wait was so long for a table that the food tasted better. Whatever the case, Thai Market's take-out did not live up to my memory. Oh well, it was still decent thai food.
Definitely not writing it off, I might just have to have a phallic drink next time I order!

Now that's Thai! Cute waitors (the really cute one disapeared), great papaya salad and tremendous Bangkok flavoures. Some dishes cator to the American palet (college budget) like the saucy peanut butter pad Thai and huge Chinese like entrees, but the Thai owner knows his stuff. Yum! Splurge on the appetizers, soups and specials.
We waited an hour and a half last night for the delivery to arrive. Will never order from here again. True my Sapporad (sp?) was good but husband's curry was flavorless. NY restaurants - if you're running behind and delivery is going to take more than 30 mins, for heavens sake just tell your customers on the phone. It's no different from waiting at the restaurant. So lame. Hate this place now.
If I could give zero stars, I would...We ordered delivery to Columbia during midterms, our bad! Instead of delivering to the address on campus, they took the food to my apartment, denied it (we only found out because the delivery man called my cell phone from my house), did not apologize, didn't have a single apologetic tone in the 5 conversations we had over the span of an hour and half, and basically blamed their faults on us. I used to enjoy the food enough to order from them quite often. I now despise their rude attitude and it is quite unfortunate.
Some of the best inexpensive Thai in NYC - and maybe on the East Coast. A close friend and I had lunch here Saturday during the 30% off Dine-In Unemployment Special.
The $8.00 Lunch special is already pretty darned Special.
We started with appetizers - 2 small spring rolls (vegetarian) and a yummy sweet dipping sauce, and 2 chicken-filled steamed thai dumplings.
It was a party in my mouth - and that party was just beginning...
Next we each had noodle dishes - and I had a fabulous Pad -Se-Ew. Not greasy and very light.
YUMMY!
Can't wait to go back.
Meh. After stumbling home one night from Amsterdam 106, I made a mental note to check Thai Market out for lunch. 8 dollars for an appetizer and an entree? Heck yeah, I'm there.
I knew today was the day. "Man, I want some Thai" were seriously the first words out of my mouth this morning, and serendipitously [supercalifragilistic...] this exclamation coincided with a morning text from a friend asking if I wanted to meet for lunch. Check, Set, Mate: Thai food, I will own you in my tummy.
But, this place [like the ratty menu they gave me] is clearly Yesterdays news. My meal was just blah-k. Maybe it was what I ordered? I had curry puff [yes, just one] and Pad See Ew. I have several qualms, included [but not limited to]:
1) The portion: "The curry puff stands alone" should be posted on the menu. Sure, it's a single person appetizer, but the expression is "puff puff pass" for a reason. Everyone wants two!
2) Overuse of salt: My noodles were fine, but the salt overwhelmed the dish. Also, the chicken present was bland, and I'd like more broccoli. My meals need to be liberal, thanks. I defy your staunchly anti-broccoli stance, former President George Bush.
I did enjoy the funky, steel tables; although, I thought the decor was a bit overwhelming at first. The service was pretty good - the waiter refilled my water at least 3 times [of course, my lunch date and I were one of three tables present]. And, really, at the end of the day, it was cheap, so how can I complain?
Actually, I clearly can still complain. It was a fun meal, but you probably won't see a return visit from me any time soon. I'll just head to Hell's Kitchen when I really feel a hankering.
Thai Market is refreshing in that it's a very focused restaurant. There are a couple fusion joints in the area with menus that leave you overwhelmed (I'm talking to you, Ozen). However, if you want Thai and you know you want Thai, I recommend this. The entree prices are pretty appropriate for the portions, but I'm usually let down when I remember that you only get two pieces or so when you order appetizers like steamed dumplings and spring rolls.
However, it's the appetizers that I think I love most about Thai Market. I will, without fail, order their calamari every time. In-house it's a little crispier, but even when delivered it stays pretty firm. On their own they're well-fried, but the slightly-sweet sauce that comes with them is excellent and it's a great alternative to marinara. The spring rolls are light and delicious, even for a self-proclaimed carnivore like me.
As for entrees, they're well seasoned. They cook their shrimp perfectly and the spices aren't watered down. When you order something like Thai Basil Sauce, they give you plenty of bird's eye chili. It's a a very satisfying dish that blasts your sinuses. They also do a pretty decent and filling pad Thai. I usually balk at eggs in my noodles (which is weird for someone who likes Asian cuisine), but they do it right; the texture of bean curd and flavor of peanuts make it a good choice, even if a little too familiar.
The only thing that disappoints me are the salads, which have been a little watery in my experience and perhaps overly seasoned with citrus and mint. Sometimes it's like a Lemonhead and a lifesaver made love in my red onion.
They have a wide delivery area and are prompt. Had my food in under 20 minutes.
I've actually been to Thailand and I can say I walked out with a smile out of this place. I highly recommend it if your in the mood for some awesome Thai food. My favorite dish was the Flat rice noodle with duck and a very spicy Pa-nag Chicken Curry. Great Decor and good service.
As the rating suggests it's A-OK. All around average.
I've been to Thai Market several times. Had several different dishes but nothing really stands out. I've had better quality elsewhere for cheaper. Their duck is over cooked and dry - which was really disappointing. They don't have many duck dishes so maybe it just sits around. Didn't taste fresh or juicy, as duck should be. Their noodle dishes are greasy and the flavor isn't consistent.
Service is consistently average. I hate getting a glass of water that's dripping wet. Unless I wipe it off, it drips all over me. It's not that big of a deal but annoying none the less.
Don't recommend their delivery. They're quick but the food quality drops several notches.
I sound so excited about his place. Guess I won't be going back.
Looks very downtown. Food is quite tasty - some delicious tom yum soup and flavor-filled pad see ew with tofu and vegetables for $8?? Sure :) One bummer was the diet coke served in mini glass bottles - cute yes, free refills no. I see myself enjoying lunches here, but mostly take out. It's a shame that their open airy decorating style is wrecked by uncomfortable seats and small round tables that make groups of more than two awkward.
Thai Market is definitely the best Thai restaurant in the area. I claim no expertise on Thai food, but my roommate, who spent a summer in Thailand, says they have the most authentic Thai food she's had in the States. (When she brought this up with the waiter once, he said that the vegetables in the US taste different and that's why it doesn't taste exactly like real Thai food. Interesting.)
The service isn't exactly the friendliest, but the food comes fast (if not all at once). You can pretty much close your eyes and point to something on the menu to order and it will be good. I've had the pad thai, vegetable ginger, tofu pra-ram, daikon cake appetizer, and a bunch of other stuff and it's all just been amazing. Everything is fresh and very flavorful without being overpowering.
The decor is great, too, with giant black and white photos on the walls and red umbrellas hanging from the ceiling. I don't go here as often as I'd like, but I definitely recommend it to anyone in the area or interested in venturing north of 96th Street.
The food is pretty decent Thai food. I did, however, have a bad experience with a rude delivery man. I wasn't crazy about the Pad Thai, but they do have a good tofu dish with broccoli and peanut sauce.
A cure for home sickness and other destination blues... finding an open sidewalk Thai cafe on the UWS, where they serve papaya salad and chicken laab on third world country plates--just like the ones Grandma had.
Some restaurants are worth the extra cab fare or subway ride from the UES to the UWS - and New Yorkers know this is no easy trip. Located in the west 100s, Thai Market is my favorite authentic Thai restaurant (second only to Jaiya). With its open sidewalk patio, street posters mimicking the popular Thai markets, large umbrellas, and tasty cuisine, this place makes you feel like you're almost in Thailand. I discovered Thai Market through a girlfriend studying at Columbia. Bo thinks I'm crazy for venturing up there by myself at night to satisfy my cravings - their papaya salad and chicken pad kee mao are so worth it! I can't wait till Spring is here to eat at their tables in the open patio. It makes me feel like a traveler in some regional cafe. Most of all, the cooking feels like "home." Their lunch deals are also made for the Thai food enthusiast!
I'm happy to say that this time I had the epitome of a perfect hostess--she was polite, invited me to sit down on one of the side chairs when my food wasn't ready yet, and waited for me to finish signing everything before she handed me my food. Really, she just did everything the previous hostess did wrong right and was charmingly polite on top of it.

I wasn't too sure what to expect from Thai Market because of its decor. Most Asian restaurants, if good, have little or no matching decor. Because TM looked a little more decorous than the typical Asian restaurant I thought I was in for a terrible and Americanized Thai meal.
However, the food here was decent and even presented nicely. It's close to CU and I forgot how the service was so it wasn't too bad or too good.
There's also a really good lunch deal (appetizer+entree for about $8).
The modern look really accentuates the feel of being at a high end restaurant. And its not a pricey restaurant, but the newspaper menu, the innovative tea kettle make Thai market different from other Thai restaurants.
Food is good too! A bit on the spicier side, like the Tom Yum Ghai (coconut soup). Papaya salad is very fresh, curries, and pad thai like what I'd expect at a Thai restaurant.
YUM! My favorite thai restaurant in the Morningside Heights area (and there are a lot: this restaurant far surpasses Swish (Vine?), Limeleaf, Wondee Siam, etc). The entrees are well-portioned (meaning, you'll probably leave enough leftover to pack-up for lunch the next day). I'm always in the hunt for good pad thai, and Thai Market makes it wonderfully. The serving size is the size of my head (maybe even bigger) - and every single bite is packed with flavor. I agree with previous reviewers as well -- the appetizers are fantastic. Try the curry puffs. The restaurant itself looks so much better than the typical shoddy environment that Thai restaurants seem to have. The service is attentive and polite. Definitely a must-try.
It's been a while since I've been to this neighborhood, but since I've moved close to the #1 Train, that's going to have to change.
Great food, great atmosphere (a graphic designer's wet dream: beautiful newspaper-style menus, photography, and photography-turned furniture. They make photos of the inside of an open Asian-looking umbrella into the canopies of the booths. Clever!
The food was right on too -- nothing terribly fancy or expensive, but definitely not disappointing. I had the Chicken Pad Sapparod with pineapple, cashew nuts, scallions, and sweet & sour sri-ra-cha sauce. I washed it all down with a cold glass of Thai iced tea.
Also, they now have a Village Pour House next door in addition to the gay pub 'Suite' just down a few blocks.
I havent actually stepped into this restaurant, but I did get takeout with friends last Sunday night as we were helping a friend with her move. The food came quickly, was hot and I thought yummy. My favorite dish that we ordered was a green vegetarian curry. Portions weren't humongous as others have mentioned (the lil fried spring rolls were baby-sized!), and I still stand by Wondee Siam on the westside in Midtown as my favorite Thai place in the city.
