I am from Chicago, where every other street has some sort of Asian fusion Thai Korean Japanese Philipine place right in your face! Anyway, I was visiting our office in Overland when the group decided on Thai for lunch - I am always up for some Thai food.
We went in and ordered and amazing spread of food. The Veggie Spring Rolls we ordered were great - and so flavorful. The calamari they had, was cooked to perfection - and the beef appetizer we got was so amazing, it literally was gone within minutes.
The Cashew Chicken I ordered - extra spicy had a lot of flavor and a lot of spice. It was great, because the spice actually didnt overpower the dish and it was still so enjoyable.
I loved this place, and would come back anytime I am in town. It is just great! -

Nice thai decor, friendly service and generous portions. Great tasting food.
I'd love to give this place another star but one thing about my food really bothered me. Both my meal and my friend's we had multiple pieces of shrimp that were not deveined! Now these were the smaller size shrimp so it's not technically unsanitary to leave in that black stringy intestinal track on the shrimp. But I think it's gross. If it was one piece that's dismissible but almost every piece in our dishes had it left in. Also the shrimp were over cooked and rubbery.
The food did taste very good, but the shrimp thing kinda grossed me out. Yes I know some cultures think it actually adds flavor, but I just think in a restaurant it needs to be removed.
Now my husband did love his Penang chicken curry and said it's the best he's had around town. I think we'll have to come back and see if we can have a experience that lives up to the other great reviews. -

I used to come to this location when it was actually a DIFFERENT Thai restaurant. The spot was formerly occupied by Thai Place. Now it's a new menu with a new owner and it's called Thai Homeplace Restaurant. Guess what? It's even better than before! I came in here a few months ago with a couple of fellow Thai food lovers. Each one of us was thoroughly impressed with the entrees we ordered. The Pad Thai treated me just right. The freshness, flavor, portions...all good. We were way digging Thai Homeplace. Also, the staff was very friendly, and gave us great service. I'll be coming back here.

Wonderful food! They are slightly more expensive than other Thai places in the Metro but the food is so lovely. Had the mild coconut curry and veggie spring rolls, which was some of the best I've had in KC.
I'm a big fan of Lulu's in the Crossroads but sometimes the service and atmosphere there is seriously lacking. Its nice that I know there is a wonderful option when I'm needing a slightly more quiet dining experience to go along with my curry cravings. -

Yay, another Thai joint I love!
So far I've only had their Red Curry Chicken twice along with Crab Rangoon and their Pad Thai with Chicken. Portions are nice. From what I noticed their other dishes have also have decent sized portions. My wife likes their beef and noodle dish. I loved their Crab Rangoon. I don't care if it is Chinese honestly because they are good!
Interior is nice. However one of my visits for lunch the lighting really needed to be cranked up.
Service has been great all three times I've been there. No complaints. My first visit really stood out.

- Great service

WOW! AMAZING! MOUTHWATERING! I could not stop. I really couldn't. I should have had more leftovers, but screw that!
Well, their soup was to die for. It was for about 3 people. YUM.
They had the best Pad Thai that I have ever had. They made it nice and spicy, but also sweet. Just the way I like it!
It was a cute place with lots of Asian knick-knacks. Good size portions.
However, the service was slow, even though it was rather empty. You really had to work to get their attention. Also, the menu seemed quite limited compared to Thai restaurants back East that I'm used to.
I can't wait to go here again and to share the food with friends so that I can try more dishes. MMM LEFTOVERS. -

I do not miss my old job on College Boulevard. But man do I miss Thai Place! Always spicy, always delicious, and always fast, this restaurant does Thai food justice.
Unlike some other Asian restaurants I've tried, Thai Place doesn't overdo the heat. I like my food hot, but not everyone does, and it's no fun eating lunch with someone whose head is on fire. The wait staff is always good about asking how you like your food, and it always comes to your table the way your requested. No wonder there's always a big lunch crowd!
I haven't yet had the chance to try Thai Place at dinner, but the lighting and acoustics would make this a great date restaurant. When you're craving Pad Thai or Ginger Chicken, give Thai Place a try. There are five locations around town so you're never far away from a delicious Thai treat. -

Definitely the Best Thai Restaurant in Kansas City. I came here after work craving my favorite Gra Pow (stir Fried Chicken with Basil and Peppers) over rice with Eggs. I grew up eating at alot of Thai Rest's in San Francisco since my college days. I could never find that perfect taste of Gra Pow from those days, until today. I ordered it with a little scepticism, but when I took my first bite, it was perfection. I added a little of the peppers in fish sauce and devoured half of the meal, it was way too much for one person. I now have tomorrows lunch ready ;-)
The staff is very friendly, the decor is like a warm home setting with dark rich red colors. I ate here by myself, like every night, but it would be perfect for a date.
Next Day Lunch Continuation.....the leftovers tasted just as good when heated up.Listed in: Thai in Kansas City

Wonderful Thai food... Wonderful FOOD period. My favorite crab wonton/rangoon in the city. Dishes are true to the cuisine, galanga, kaffir, lemon grass, bird chillies yum.
They cook the dishes to your requested level of spicy, though stick with medium++ to get the true flavors to come through. Thom Yum/Volcano soup yumyum. Hot & Sour soup with lunch can't be beat. The sauce that comes along with the tiger cry beef is worthy of a pedestal, get the point?
Favorites:
Sen Mee Phad Sea Eaw
Fine rice noodles (think angel hair) fried (rice style, w/ egg) veggies and meat of your choice, great dish, stay away from mild on it though! Too Bland that way.
lad na gra prow
Finely minced meat with peppers in a basil sauce on rice topped with a fried egg -- too die for, only on lunch menu I believe.
Downside is the lunch has grown kind of pricey over the past couple of years, but it's worth it for the wonderful food! -
Review from Lyn P.
My experience with Asian food outside of Cali and NY has been abysmal, but Thai Place breaks the mold. I've been here a few times now and have been wowed each time.
They offer standard Thai dishes and a little cross fusion (the soft spring rolls are really Vietnamese). I like to start off with the Thai Place appetizer plate that comes with chicken satay, Thai egg rolls, the aforementioned soft spring rolls and crab rangoon. The appetizer comes with a generous portion of peanut sauce, along with a sauce for the spring rolls and sweet and sour as well.
You can't go wrong with the Pad Thai - get the seafood version for something special. I am also a fan of the Pad See Ewe - which is the thick egg noodles with broccoli and a garlic soy based brown sauce along with your choice of meat. The last time I went, we also ordered the duck, which was excellent.
You can order your food to the level of spiciness that you prefer - medium is plenty hot for people who like a little kick, but unless you are prepared for the burn, the casual diner will want to stick to the mild.
The restaurant is decorated very nicely with a lot of traditional Thai art, beautiful glass cases and fresh flowers. Highly recommended to anyone that is looking for an authentic Thai restaurant in an somewhat upscale setting.Listed in: My KC Picks

They have good quality food, great lunch specials, and a diverse enough menu that you could bring a non-adventurous eater along with you. Is this the most authentic Thai food around? No, but it is a solid option for area. I will say they use good quality ingredients which are showcased well in their diverse menu.
I recommend their Pad Kee Mow...wonderful! -

Great Thai food. I now live in Seattle and have not had Thai food as good as The Thai Place in Overland Park. Every dish has been well seasoned which seems to be the issue with the places I have tried in Seattle. They all lack flavor. The chicken and shrimp phad thai is my favorite dish here. I am a pepper belly and Hot is almost to much at this joint. I made the mistake of ordering thai hot only once. So beware!
If you are looking for a good reasonable place to enjoy thai food, The Thai Place will not disappoint.
Also as an appetizer ask for the mango salad. It is no longer on the menu, but it is delicious. They will usually make it for you as long as you ask. -
Review from Joe H.
I've always thought that Thai Place was over priced, and maybe it is when you look at each dish as a one person entree. Truthfully, each dish could be split between 2-4 people fairly easily, or one dish could serve one person for several meals. This makes it a pretty good deal. The service is also quite good. They typically pride themselves in efficient service. They are also fairly meticulous, in my experience, in making sure all dinnerware is spotless. I wish there was more variety on the menu, especially when it come to noodle dishes because I love me some noodles.
Overall, I'd recommend Thai Place -

I have only had take out from here but I have big dreams of going in for a sit-down some time. The atmosphere inside seems great!
I ordered the Panang curry and it was amazing. My mother tried some off my plate and wouldn't stop raving about it and following me around with a fork. It almost caused WW three in the kitchen, But that was a curry worth fighting for!
Seriously, though, there was more than enough in the serving for both of us. There might even be enough for three people but I am not that good at sharing food, so a 3-way split might be pushing it for me.
Unfortunately they currently do not have a liquor license (but they used to have one in the past). They have re-applied and hopefully they get that license again. -

well, well, well..i bet youre asking yourself how can a dolphin diss a thai restaurant in KC? well let me tell you.
the plus': the service was wonderful, its a beautiful spot nice atmosphere(minus the balloons. since it was their grand re-opening they were celebrating. remember, flowers=chic, balloons=cheap) the waitresses like i said were very beautiful and friendly.
now to the minus': the food. well, i had the crab rangoons(sp)? they were quite delicious although isnt that chinese food? hmmm...now for something really puzzling, i received my salad and the dressing was some sorta red duck sauce or was it sweet and sour?? whichever one of those sauces is red. now correct me glorious people of thailand, isnt your salad served with peanut sauce? hmmmmm..maybe it was some modern chinese interpretation of thai salad in america..yes, i went there. on that note i stuck to a classic pad thai dish and it was ok..a little sweet. like mrs. buttersworth sweet.
anyway..i dont like being so negative, so back to the ocean with me -

The Thai tea is so sweet, the Crab Rangoon melts in your mouth, and their noodles are just so good! Great environment. You do get what you pay for- always left overs for the next day!

Excellent food! We go here at least once a month. We always get one of the curries (they are all fabulous) and usually the spicy basil beef salad. I cannot remember the name, but it is a Thai name that I cannot pronounce..you will see it on the menu. It is amazing! We tried the wings last night and were pleasantly surprised! I do not usually eat wings but these were excellent. The outside of the restaurant does not look too exciting because it is in a strip mall, but the staff is very nice and the food is excellent. They were not able to serve liquor last night and I did not ask when they would be able to serve it again. I am assuming the ABC caught them selling to a minor.

Before I moved to Lawrence, I ate at the Thai Place once a week. heir Pad Thai is the most amazing example I have ever had and many of the other dishes are just amazing. I never had a bad experience at this restaurant. Whenever I am back in KC at dinner time, the Thai Place is where I go, and I often met friends there, even with the 40-mile drive. Don't miss it.

My wife had a cold and asked me to run out for some hot and sour soup. I yelped for help and this was close. After I brought it home, she said it wasn't that good. It was very salty, and missing shrimp. If she's looking for the same thing again, I'll try somewhere else. They may have wonderful Tai food, and the place look nice and clean and had customers, but unfortunately their hot & sour soup missed the mark.

The food was okay but what is up with their lunch menu prices. I had the Jalapeno Beef from the lunch menu for $11.95. Hell, I live in California and the dinner menu price is not that much. Don't get me wrong though, the food was pretty good.

Review from Gouthami K.

I think there was an old Thai Place and a new, remodeled one or something, but the glowing reviews a lot of people have given Thai Place seem completely misplaced to me. I found the restaurants interior to be really cluttered and kitschy, which isn't really that damaging for a Thai restaurant - which is better judged on its food. But the food wasn't all that great.
First of all, the service in my experience was really lacking. I ordered the fried catfish and that came with a salad, and after I asked the waitress if she could substitute the sweet and sour dressing for ginger dressing, she said no. Which is fine, but when I asked for the salad just by itself we had this weird moment where she seemed to get the impression that I was wasting her time. Maybe just my experience, but after that the waitress seemed really curt with me. It's not like it was a busy day.
After all that, my friend ordered some decent fried rice, but you can get that anywhere. She later says she felt sick after eating the whole thing, but I'm not basing my review on that. My catfish was kind of dry and flavorless on the inside. But on the outside it was smothered in grease and some thick brown sauce, which I had specifically asked to give on the side. At that point, I got that feeling where everything you order in a restaurant sucks and you just want to get out of there, but you feel kind of ashamed. So you eat some of the food and spread it around on your plate to make it look more touched. Bleagh, just stay away until they get their groove back or whatever. Not at all worth the hype. -

Good restaurant, but if you want to save money try the Wai Wai which is a fast food version of Thai Place!

Great expereince and service. The food itself is not the greatest as many of the reviews said here. I have had travel and eaten many types of foods, Thai food in KC just generally sucks. The one that come closeet is the one off of 87th and Grant (used to live behind it). Their service sucks and the place smells. If these two places combine into one, that would be awesome.
