Thai Basil is a cozy, small, and intimate restaurant. It is not the fanciest Thai restaurant, but it is certainly comfortable. Service is great; you are seated almost immediately, drinks are constantly being refilled, and your order is brought pretty quickly.

The food itself is great. It is not out-of-this-world, but it is the typical Thai cuisine. It tastes good and special requests are fulfilled.

Overall, I highly recommend Thai Basil.
Reasonable prices, great food, cute atmosphere.

The husband and I were craving Chinese food but the freezing wind and growl in our tummies convinced us to turn to Thai Basil as we passed while out shopping.

Overall: good. Not amazing, not bad. The food was decent Thai food; we ordered the typical spring roll appetizer (shrimp, mint, cucumber, etc) and that was great. Fresh and delicious, fantastic peanut sauce, if not a bit heavy.

Okay, next up was pad thai (of course) with chicken & shrimp, and hot basil beef (if i remember the name correctly). Pad thai was good, not the best I have had but we can blame that on our lackluster ordering. I hear even the crispy pad thai is worth ordering. Hot basil beef was not hot. There was chilis and peppers which added a nice tingle but not spicy, not even for my weak tolerance to spicy. There was a lil chili pepper on the menu next to this dish, so I was disappointed to find it mild.

Would have spiced it up to a nice prickle-my-tongue and water-my-eyes level I appreciate in my asian cuisine but there were no hot sauces on the table. Granted, the place was trying to be cozy and a bit upper scale than the hole-in-the-wall feel of some thai restaurants in town, but ... it was not really classy. Of course you may wonder why I didnt just ask for some sriracha sauce, but well, you see, the food was such that i wasnt sure it would be much improved with or without the sauce.

the service was great, worth noting separately. friendly and attentive.

atmosphere was a bit off - very dark, one would hesitate to say intimate because the noise level was too high and there was too much commotion for such a small space.

Again, overall not bad though not memorable. Kinda wish we would've held out for some Chinese food in the end.

I like this place, but as my first time going there it was completely empty! Haha

Maybe because the Christmas decor was so tacky, but eh, gotta get in the Christmas mood somehow.

I had their crispy pad thai (I think that was what it was called) But if you're like me and don't enjoy your entrees too sweet then you would exactly finish this entire dish because it's a bit too sweet for my taste. So if you're going to order this dish, it'd be best to share it with a group of friends while you have a more savory salty dish to share too.

The bathroom location scared me haha I thought I walked into the wrong place and into the butchering area or something! Yeah, the bathroom is awkwardly located. At least it's clean!

PS I love their That Tea!

    I'd go back :)
    ... without a full bladder...

Hands down the BEST, most authentic Thai food in Boston.

After having lived in Thailand for four years, and been searching for the perfect Thai restaurant for years, it is definitely Thai Basil. The staff is always friendly, efficient and the food tastes like it was made in the streets of Bangkok.

Thai iced tea ( cha yen sai nom) is very sweet and is the perfect blend of tea and condensed milk. Always a favorite. Chicken satay with peaunut sauce is a classic appetizer and simply delicious. Marinated perfectly and cooked to perfection.  Papaya salad ( som tam) is comprised of shredded veggies with nuts and tomatoes and red chili. if you like spicy, it is a must!

The coconut chicken soup  ( thom kha guy) is off the charts! Steaming coconut milk, with mushrooms, chicken, and spices. Excellent anytime of day.

This is NOT your typical, run of the mill fast-food Asian restaurant. If you are looking for fried rice and egg rolls go elsewhere. If you know nothing about traditional Thai food then you won't appreciate the true authentic favors this place has to offer.

Just went to Thai Basil today and it was absolutely disgusting. The smells coming from the place were not aromatic to put it nicely. The decor leaves something to be desired with sinking tiles and fake flowers and dirty place mats.

I ordered a fried tofu dish off of the special menu which included 2 egg rolls and 2 pork dumplings. I didn't opt for the dumplings so they gave me 3 egg rolls, but they were teeny tiny.

Then the food came and everything tasted canned and the tofu tasted like it had been it had been pre-cooked and reheated.

    Ugh...so gross!

The saving grace was the Thai Tea which was not too sweet, not too sour. Otherwise though...will not be returning. Yick!

This place is good.  Decor is old, not very shi-shi, however its age lends itself to its successes.   Places need to be good if they are to last on newbury street.   It's not located in the prime of newbury st, but close enough, near niketown.

My cousin and I were looking for a moderately priced and casual place, without a wait, as soon as we walked by we knew this was the place.  The menu was good, however it was hard to see the catagories in the poor lighting.

Our order, fresh basil rolls with shrimp, shrimp pad Thai, and chicken hot basil.  Two Thai iced teas, and a side of brown rice.

The app came quickly and upon the first noshing, I knew this place was going to be good.  The lettuce wasn't cold, the shrimp was still slight warm and absolutely moist.  It was made at time of order, and the sauce was to die for.

Thai tea was perfect, not overly creamy and not overly sweet, probably the best, I haven't made myself.

Entrees, the pad Thai was good, all it lacked was a lime wedge atop, perhaps some fresh uncooked sprouts.  As my cousin noted the hot basil was presented in an unusual way, lots of mushrooms and very wet with brown sauce.  It was good though.  He's not a huge fan of mushrooms, but fortunately, I am.

Why the star lost, perhaps it was the weird path to the restrooms, unsure.

Four stars for the treasure bags! So yummy! They were not oily at all as I'm not a big fan of crab rangoons or any type of fried things wrapped. The fillings were cooked perfectly and had a good flavor, paired well with the dipping sauce. I also ordered the seafood basil lomein. The veggies were crisp and the seafood were not overcooked , however, it was a bit oily this time.

Service was pretty good as server came to refill water without being told. He also adjust the plate settings for us to make more room for the table and was pretty accomondating. Overall, pretty good experience.

I went to Boston on vacation for the first time and was craving some good Asian cuisine. We passed by this little restaurant hidden below an apartment complex. We ordered the roasted duck and it was the most delicious duck I've ever had! Super moist, juicy, and flavorful! I wish I could ship back the duck to LA, so I can enjoy it one more time.

I recommend ordering the duck, side of veges, and maybe even the pad thai.

Service was great too and we didn't have to ask for a refill on water, since they do their rounds.

if you see only forks on the tables in a thai restaurant, your alarm should trigger. it's probably not so good. and i was totally right. (thai people eat with fork and spoon together).

i got seafood something. it didn't sound very thai, but i had a pretty good feeling about it. but... it's underseasoned. i looked at the food that other people got. it didn't look too appetizing. oh well

and it's kinda in the basement...

they have to work on getting the weird smells out of their space... but the food is good! especially considering low prices in a prime location..

chef's specialties on the first page -- do it. especially if salmon is involved. yum.

service could be a bit better -- they rush you if they want to close..

I've had much better Thai food. I found the massaman curry to be bland and their side of rice was pathetic, gone in three bites. This was lunch however so I guess the price was right.

The fried pad thai was an improvement, not too greasy. Nothing amazing. The decor was pretty boring, though I was interested in their choices of wine of which the menu was not on our table. I don't like the mirrors so you be easily stared at and the tables are pretty much right next to each other.

Our server seemed pretty irritated to be there. Understandable since when we were leaving there were kids touching everything. When I went to use their bathroom to wash my hands, it was pretty much disgusting. Could never understand why people have kids if they're not gonna pick up after them?

First time: ordered the Beef Noodle Soup which was pretty good.

Second time: came with a group of friends and the service was terrible. The waitress was just rude and didn't care about anything. We ordered the Pad Thai and they gave us tiny portions. The table next to us also had Pad Thai but theirs' were larger than us..

While I would avoid the duck here, the chicken panang is decent. The pad thai with tofu is a must-try. Thanks to a little mix-up in the doggy bags, I got a chance to try the pad thai and I was very pleased.

The bathrooms were being cleaned when we walked in and therefore I found them to be very clean. The servers were nice even though we were the last people on the restaurant. Great place to meet (near the Copley T station).

Despite having had to wait nearly half an hour for my dish, the huge vat of Thai iced tea/coffee always makes coming here worth it - the food strikes me as solid, though not extraordinary, but does enough to hit the spot.

I am writing this review for a friend of mine who is not here to defend himself (he is currently on his honeymoon). Although I have never eaten here, I came here with him and his wife before seeing them off at the airport.

The food itself looked pretty good (he got the green curry chicken) and the service was all right in terms of speed and friendliness, so it would probably rate at around three or four stars.

However, I am downgrading to one star (and would do negative if yelp would allow me) because of the food poisoning he got from his food. To his dismay, it was bad and hit him while on the plane to London. Luckily he got over it by the next day, but was not too happy about it.

Hence my writing this review...there is absolutely no excuse for a restaurant to skimp on quality or hygiene of food.

Thai Basil is not the best Thai place in Boston, but if you're looking for pretty reasonably priced thai food while shopping on Newbury it'll do. I've been here twice with friends when visiting the great city of Boston. Both times the food was satisfactory but not amazing. At least the servings are pretty generous.

Pad Thai - sweet. I don't like my pad thai that sweet but it's ok. you get tired of the sweetness halfway through the dish.
Pad See Ew - pretty good. Noodles were a little soggy but dish overall ok. spicy.
Mango Fried Rice - ok. rice bland.
Mango Curry - watery but not too bad.
Thai Chili Basil Scallops - came with 3 fried scallops. Scallops cooked pretty well and sauce was good. Worth a try if you don't mind the price for 3 scallops.

I posted pictures of each dish.

Overall, I look forward to trying other thai places next time i visit Boston but do not plan on visiting Thai Basil again.

Yeah, alright, I'll give it four stars.  The decor is nothing special to look at, and we had to ask for our menus after we were seated and waiting awhile, but the service was friendly and efficient once we got rolling.

I had the tofu pad thai - it was definitely a little sweeter than I like, but there was lots of tofu and cooked expertly. I would order it again.

Keep in mind that we went around 5pm on Saturday and it was about half full. If the place is packed, I could see how it would be way too cramped.

I have been coming here for years - can't believe I am just reviewing it now!  This place is nothing to write home about, but the food is very good.  The pad thai here is just about the best I've had.  Try the crispy pad thai too!  When I order pad thai at other restaurants, I need to add sauce a lot of the time to give it more flavor.  Here, it's perfectly flavored.  Plus, lots of veggies in the crispy pad thai!

Prices are good too and service is very fast!

    Really tasty food.
If you go during lunchtime, your food will come with a side of rice. Dinner entree's you must ask for the rice & pay $2.00 extra.
Food is always fresh & delicious.
Staff is friendly and generally you are in and out in 45mins.
Some of my faves are the Tofu Basil, Spicy Tofu, Seafood Rainbow and the Chicken Noodle soup. If you get the soup, ask to have veggies added & for a side of their chili sauce. The noodles in the soup are basically ramen noodles but the broth is yummy and it really hits the spot on a cold, New England day.
I've noticed on sunny days, the restaurant is pretty quiet @ lunchtime. So if you're short on time, on a sunny day and need a quick bite, order take out. It will be ready super fast.

I went here last Friday evening in a group of 10 although our reservation was only for 7.

The food and service are pretty good.  My friend and I shared a combo appetizer plate and the mango curry.  The appetizer platter is mighty tasty! Especially since it is all deep fried snacks.   The mango curry provides a nice contrast because it is sweet.  However, if you do things that way, expect not to finish the curry.  It doesn't look like a lot of food, but it is really filling!

Also for the penny pinchers out there - one bowl of rice is enough for two people.  One the one bowl there looks to be another generous scoop of rice on top!

As always for a large group, one person's dish was forgotten, but since that is to be expected I don't take points off.  I probably wouldn't come here again with such a large group.  There really isn't that much space for large parties.

Otherwise, I would rec this place for yummy food and fairly good service!

Our standard take out. We have been all over Boston and haven't found better Pad Thai. It's easy and fast and they're always on time with deliveries. We love their spring rolls, Pad Thai, and Red Curry.

Just a tip: if you're ordering for delivery/take out and get a curry or something that needs rice, be sure to ask for a side of rice. Sometimes we end up getting two, usually one, but one time we ordered and we didn't specify so it didn't come with rice at all, and Curry without rice = no bueno. I don't recall them charging us for it unless we got two (in which case I assume they assumed we wanted 2 rices).

All in all, we have never had a bad meal and I think we've eaten here at least 25 times. And that's just me and boyfriend, not including the separate times we have eaten there.

This place is pretty good. The decor inside is really nice! The bathroom is in an awkward place, but it's definitely kept out of the way of the main dining area.

Food: It was pretty good. I got the Pad See Ew with beef, and I finished it completely. Cooked well, and the presentation was nice. Price was about $10.. Other things on the menu are bit pricier, so my party of 4 ended up getting all noodle dishes. My friend had a big portion of the pad thai and had a lot left. She asked for a box and got a small takeout box that wasn't the size of what was left over.

Service: The service was pretty good. They also made sure our glasses were filled with water.

Price: Cheap for a restaurant on Newbury.

    I'd go here again :)

Its around the corner from where I work, so I visit occasionally when I can take a full lunch.

Their pad thai whether crispy or non, with chicken or shrimp, quick or a little less than quick, is always a good choice. Their pad see ew, it is not ew at all. Service is always quick and the food is always well priced.

The bathroom though, kind of scary, I think it could use like, a few drapes to hide like wierd dungeon basement baby items. Staff is friendly, though they always seem a little frazzled around lunchtime.

Just an A-OK place. Certainly catching this place again.

I stopped in while taking the dog for a walk to grab a quick bite.  Had a shrimp pad thai and a steamed dumplings (very standard dishes').  It's obvious that the place is in the basement and the ambiance is not the best.  I took the food out (because I had the dog with me) and sat on the steps next door.  Everything was good and the hostess was very pleasant.  I would say the pad thai is slightly more flavorful than the one at House of Siam.  Oh, and the price was also reasonable, especially for being on Newbury street.

Convenient for a Clarendon St resident.... we order takeout from here a couple times a month. Usually go for the crispy pad thai, hot and sour soup and then some meat dish or appetizer. Pretty decent thai food.

Went in last Friday around 6 for our first dinner there... And because I'm a creature of comfort I of course, ordered the crispy pad thai to share and hot and sour soup for myself. Beef skewers and the jungle soup were also ordered. Yum.

Everything came out SUPER fast which was great because we had just finished a workout and were very hungry. On the other end, things also left our table just as fast. I felt completely rushed. The waitresses came over multiple times asking if we were done and if they could take our plates....  Finally when I had cleared the plates of all food and sat back to rub my belly and let it go to work at that thing called digesting BAM the check for our meal was slapped onto our table in seriously less than a minute!

I'm not sure if they had dessert, but I don't think they wanted anyone to relax during their meals for even a second. I was not aware that it was a race to the finish line that is up the stairs and OUT the door!

I will continue to order out from Thai Basil, will save my 20% tip each time for another kind of race...my annual spring 5K.

Delivery from here is always great - on time, no incorrect orders and food is always hot enough. The "free delivery" is a bonus too.

Flavorwise, everything is your standard Thai food. Flavorful, a little greasy, and filling portion sizes (but not over the top).

My biggest gripe is that they charge for white rice. I dont know when restaurants started doing this, but they shouldn't! Who puts curry on a menu and serves it without rice?? It's a given that the two go together. They don't make it clear on the menu, so don't forget this!!! I'd hate to see u get stuck drinking your curry as a soup.

Chicken Pad Se Eiw - A tad greasy but overall it hits the spot and tastes good! Needs to have more vegetables though!

Chicken Satay - standard fare. Nice tender grilled chicken served with a thick peanut sauce.

Spring rolls with shrimp - needs more shrimp. overall, ok but a little bland.

Mango sticky rice - Hard to go wrong here. Would benefit from selecting riper mango's, and toning down the sugar and coconut milk on the rice, but still tasty.

    Awful! This place is terrible.

We were looking for Thai in the area and ran into this place. From the outside it's cute and draws a decent crowd. But once you get inside you realize what a POS it is.

The sad part is, our order was simple....water, a diet coke, a cup of the Tom Yum soup with shrimp, and garlic shrimp as the entree.

First issue: we waited waaaay too long to order our food. We sat their for a good 10 mins before we were asked for our food/drink order.

Second issue: my soup arrives. There are 2 shrimp in and it tastes like Lemon pledge (or at least what I assume Lemon pledge tastes like based on the smell of it)

Third issue: entree arrives and I still dont have my diet coke. I have to ask a second time. (keep in mind the table next to me had to ask twice for their rice and the table across from me had to ask for their menus)

Fourth issue: There were 12 shrimp in the entree. No rice. No noodles. Just shrimp and lettuce. You have to pay extra for the rice or noodles. So we ordered flavorless noodles. They didn't bring soy sauce or any other sauce for our meal. It was the most BLAND experience I have had in while.

Fifth issue: We waited a good 15 mins for our check which never arrived. When we asked for it the waitress sighs, goes to get the check and SLAMS it on the table like we "put her out" or something. WTF!!!!!

GOD this place is bad! Needless to say we only left a $1 tip.

I've eaten here twice and will eat here again. The food is generally quite good, hot, and fresh. After trying a variety of dishes, I think in general the curries are the strongest dishes here (although we really liked the pad thai too!). The seafood tends to be fresh and excellent here, and I find the prices very reasonable for the quality and portion size of the food. Last time I was here, I ordered a seafood and noodle dish, and was astounded by how much seafood came on the plate--calamari, scallops, shrimp, and chunks of whitefish. Yum!

Thai Basil is not big on ambience--it's in a basement, the bathrooms are down a crumbling hallway in the back, and there are people frequently coming in and out for takeout. That said, I've been really pleased with the food and I've spied other diners eating things I can't wait to try.

My biggest regret about this place is that they do not have a full liquor license and their wine and beer offerings are limited. I would love a huge draft beer to accompany my spicy Thai curry.

Hands down my favorite Thai resturante in the city.   Everything is authentic, reasonable and the portions are HUGE.  The one thing I truly enjoy about this this place is when they place that little hot pepper icon near the appropriate dish it is actually spicy.  Since I am a heat hound I enjoy the small tray of hot peppers, crushed red pepper and other goodies that arrives at the table.

    Beef or Chicken Hot Basil
    Pad Thai

2 of my favorite dishes .. pst.... the apps are fantastic as well .. to the combo platter.

I'm becoming a skeptic that really good food can be found on Newbury Street. Thai Basil has all the makings of what could be a great Thai restaurant (sweet and savory flavors, generous portions, speedy service), but it's a lot of noodles and not a lot of substance... I need MEAT!

I ordered the Pad Thai and had 2 little shrimps and 4 to 5 thin shards of chicken. Annoying. Three stars, because I liked it enough for another spin around the block.

Small, cozy and quaint, really tiny Thai restaurant located underground Newbury St. ( What? It is! ) and if you're not careful odds are you might miss it.

Service was quick and very attentive, on a chilly Autumn day I figured why not get some Thai food while on Newbury?

Nothing like hot and spicy Thai food on a cold day to get your blood flowing and you're sinuses running!

I started off with their Tom Yum Soup, my favorite! Hot, aromatic, spicy and sour, just the way I like it!

You know that a restaurant seasons their food just right when on a cold day your sinuses clear up and your nose starts running, fantastic!

I ordered Thailand's most popular dish of course and the Pad Thai being served here was phenomenal!

Noodles were moist, not soggy, nice and hot out of the kitchen with generous amounts of chicken, shrimp and veggies for just $8.50! I was very satisfied and left very fulfilled.

Good food, quaint eatery, good service, my only problem was how cramped and tiny the restaurant was.

As I was eating I recall having a few patrons next to me discussing how there was no bathroom tissue at her work place so she left without washing her hands.

EW! Really? Did not need to know that and no please do not ask to borrow my hot sauce you filthy mcnasty! You can just keep it on your table! haha =D

    Besides that 4 solid stars!

Quick, decent (but not great) pad see ew.   Are chickens endangered in Boston?  I ask because there was so little actual chicken in the dish that wondered if it was trying to turn me vegetarian. Fast service overall, but I waited a while for the check.  If you need a Thai fix, it will hit the spot.  It's good for a quick lunch, but I've had better.

We love, love, love Thai Basil. We order from them every Friday night, and sure, I always get the same thing, but it's always good. Plus they've never once made fun of me for how boring I am. The delivery guys are always quick, friendly and really helpful (and there's usually a nice little note on our bag!). A couple weeks ago my husband and I even made it to the restaurant with a friend, and we were impressed. The decor is cheerful, and the food is even better fresh out of the kitchen. Our waiter and waitress were both friendly and quick to notice if we needed something more. Highly recommended!
