Dr. Lin was great, very friendly and efficient. The only problem was that I like when doctors explain whats going on in their head while they poke at me and put weird things in my eyeballs. It wasn't till the end of the test that she told me what was going on. One thing I liked was that she said I didn't have to get my pupils dilated because I hate that. thanks!
Front Desk: terrible! Here's what happened:
I spend some time looking at glasses, with no input, offers for help, or description of what they have to offer. I even ask a the desk guy to open the sunglasses case so I can try some on. He comes over, unlocks the case and says "help yourself!" Once I pick them out, the fun really begins. I walk over to the counter and announce that I've chosen two pairs.
Me: So, um how much will these cost with my insurance plan?
Guy: Well, we can only do one pair under the insurance, and then take 20% off the other pair. It will probably be the same for each pair, so it doesn't matter which one we put on insurance.
Me: Well, can you check and run the prices on insurance? I'd like to get the most discount possible.
Guy: (spends 10 minutes scribbling numbers on a sheet of paper, typing on the computer. I stand around waiting)
Me: So can you tell me what options there are for the lenses? (Why am I having to sell these glasses to myself?)
Guy: well you can do plastic or polycarbon lenses. The polycarbon are $60 more.
Me: What's the difference?
Guy: They're different material.
Me: So is the polycarbon better? They're more expensive.
Guy: Uh, yeah. They're like kind of more scratch resistant.
Me: Are they U.V. resistant? I want that.
Guy: (asks girl) are these U.V. glasses?
(repeat this Q&A session several times about various product features while each time he runs to the other sales girl to figure things out)
Then we spend about 10 more minutes while he tries to figure out how much everything is going to cost, while I stand in silence waiting.
FINALLY the girl comes over and rescues me. She kicks the guy out of his chair.
Girl: you've done this all backwards! Why did you put this at the top? And the pricing is wrong, its too expensive. You need to ring up the bill this way...
Anyways, Dr. Lui, if you read this post, you need to know that this guy knows NOTHING about glasses, has zero customer service skills, and couldn't up-sell a product to save his life. The girl, on the other hand, did a great job at selling a pair of glasses to the customers next to me, ringing up their bill, and sending them on their way.
I guess next time I need glasses I'll go to LensCrafters at the mall, where they sit me down at a table and run through my purchase with me. No more fancy Palo Alto locations for me!
Picked Dr. Lui for a few reasons:
1. hours - open early at 7:30am on Monday/Wednesday and late until 7pm on Thursday;
2. a good selection of frames - your choice of reasonable priced or designer;
3. location - away from University, plenty parking nearby.
Overall excellent eye care. Dr. Lui has been taking care of my vision for a long time, perhaps 15 years. The prescriptions and advice have been spot-on, she always finds latest technologies to help me out, frame selection is quite nice as is the advice ON frame selection, and overall demeanor of the staff are very professional. Of particular note is that I am VERY sensitive to minor changes in my prescription, and she is very diligent to ensure it turns out right from the exam through to the eyeglass fit.
I came in today with a friend in search of prescription sunglasses and the two ladies present were not very responsive. What a turn off... me and my friend were quite surprised by the sales attitude. Finally I bought nice glasses in a store close by with very friendly staff!
If you're looking for an incredibly friendly, local optometrist, go see Dr. Lui! She's wonderful! Me and my dad went to see her for years, way back when!
