This is my go-to place for a cheap breakfast. The food isn't great and the service is lackadaisical, but its cheap and fast!
At this place you have to take the good with the bad. The pain perdue is always delicious, but the coffee tastes like the stuff they have at my office.
My wife and 11-month old had breakfast here on Sunday and were very impressed. Every visit to Philadelphia will include a meal at the Tenth Street Pour House. Coffee was good and in a real mug. Not some dinky cafe cup the size of a shot glass. The food was fantastic. They put a slight spin on traditional breakfast food. Large portions but not overbearing. I was full and that says a lot.
Just go there. If I were a local, I would be a regular.
I went here for lunch and ordered French onion soup and a half oven-roasted turkey sandwich. The soup was extra salty and the sandwich was seriously a piece of turkey between two tiny pieces of bread. Unfortunately, I didn't notice you could ask for mayo or mustard for a mere $.75 extra at the time I placed my order. Perhaps it's my own fault for assuming that a sandwich is more than meat and bread.
The service was mediocre at best. The only reasons I might consider going back is because it's near my apartment and relatively cheap. If that ever happens I will definitely order something different. Sorry, but I'm far from impressed.
There is a hope in my heart that 10th St. Pourhouse gets better-service, menu, ingredients. There is something more mediocre about this place, which I frequent more than I would like, each time I go there. With quality spots like Kanella and Varga opening up in the immediate vicinity, it is time to up your game.
I had brunch here on a Saturday around 11am, prime brunch time. Despite that, we didn't have to wait for a table, and service was decent. We had the Huevos Rancheros, and the Catfish eggs benedict with a side of scrapple. The scrapple was good, and the other items were fine. I wouldn't say it's the worst or the best of anything.
It seems to be a reliable place but nothing mind blowing. The prices are very reasonable.....and there really isn't much more to say about the place.
I give it an "I'd go back if I were in the neighborhood, and didn't want to eat at Varga Bar for brunch" rating.
Went to the Pourhouse for the first time today. It's a really cute little restaurant. I ordered an iced coffee and the Huevos Rancheros. The eggs were delicious, and the homefries were even better!
Breakfast was cheap, there was no wait for a table, and the waitress was very prompt.
The cajun/creole theme is underwhelming. The decor is more bland-coffee-shop and the staff more hipster, but at least it's something a little different.
There was no wait for a table and only a moderate wait for food. I settled on the basic breakfast: two eggs, cajun sausage, homefries, toast. The coffee was pretty good though a little weak for being iced. The homefries were probably the best I've ever had in Philly. Too many places try to make Home Fries a la Too Many Ingredients, but the Pourhouse keeps it simple.
Good food, great prices. If I'm going to be in the neighborhood, I would definitely go back.
Wi-Fi is only free on weekdays, and the place is cash only.
Pour house is a wonderful local establishment. Inside you will find friendly staff, food that tastes like home cooking. The portions are small lots of good local art. I will be back.
I dig the vibrent colors and the friendly feel of the staff and customers at this place.
This is a good neighborhood place with a large menu. The food is solid and gets the job done. I especially recommend the catfish po boy.
I used to walk by this mysterious little place all the time, and would always forget to check it out on my weekend brunch schedule, ditching it for Sabrina's or something else extravagant.
The food here is by all means not the like fancy schmancy stuff you would get, like at places mentioned above, but it is CHEAP, and GOOD. Everything you need on a college student's budget. Love you pourhouse, double kiss to you.
What a tiny little gem.
The place has never disappointed us on the weekend (a Wed morning meal left us feeling extremely unsatisfied, but that's in the past). Plenty of refills on coffee. Waitstaff is friendly and checks up on you frequently. Definitely a great place for a quick breakfast. However, the place does fill up after 10 am, so try and get there early.
Tried the Pourhouse...after looking it up on yelp after the fact to write this review I was completely confused. Is this the same Pourhouse that I had been to this morning? Indeed it is, but unfortunately my experience paled in comparison to almost all the others documented here...
Cheap, yes. But honestly, I would have rather gone hungry and picked up a hot dog from a street vendor than have been left with the icky taste of their food in my mouth. I ordered the eggs benedict and a friend ordered the blueberry pancakes. While the blueberry pancakes were just passable for food, my order was not. It was just gross. I don't know if it was that the eggs were old, or the hollandaise sauce was an uber cheap brand from a can or what, but I took two bites and lost my appetite. Also, there was some yellowish crud on my glass of water.
The service was fine, I suppose. Put aside the fact that our waiter seemed to be high as a kite, they did get our orders right.
Bottom line: There's a reason it's never crowded at the Pourhouse.
They do an awesome brunch. My bff & I split the banana pancakes & cajun eggs benedict. We talk about trying something new, but never do. You go back and forth: big bite of fluffy pancakes with bananas baked in, big bite of english muffin & poached egg covered with Andouille sausage & a spicy cajun Hollandaise. Perfection. The sausage is mindblowing; I liked the catfish eggs benedict but it wasn't as thrilling. The shrimp po'boy was a little dry.
The servers have always been friendly and quick. And cute. Way cute.
When fresh out of the deep fryer, the home fries rival those of Sabrina's. Cut like small thick chips from little red skinned potatoes, crispy on the outside and soft and tender on the inside, they're enough reason for me to go here. I like the hefty breakfast burrito as well, although the eggs (omelettes and scrambled) tend to be overcooked for my tastes.
Relaxed neighbourhood breakfast, yum. There can be a wait for seating as it isn't too large, but it's an interesting people watching scene- kind of hipstery. There is one table towards the back of the restaurant that can seat a larger group, but it's mostly 2 or 4 top tables.
The boyfriend and I go here about every other weekend, and they never disappoint. The service is always friendly, the food always delicious, there's never a wait for a table, and the prices are really cheap. Definitely stop by if you're in the neighborhood for breakfast.
Let me start by saying I definitely would NOT go back here: the food was mediocre and the waitstaff was completely clueless.
I went here on a Sunday for brunch a few weeks ago and was immediately excited about three things: 1) the prices are definitely great 2) the place is close to my apartment and 3) there is no wait as many of the great breakfast places in this city have. I should have been more wary because of #3, because it was a sign of things to come.
First off, the interior was slightly dingy with non-existent decor. Second, the service left me wondering where they find these people. We had to wait a while before anyone asked us for an order. Then, our food took so long to come out, that several times the other waiters come over to our (empty) table and said "uh--are you guys going to eat?" When we told the last one that we were still waiting for our food he said, "oh - it's probably going to come out soon--there have been 4 plates sitting back there for a while and just haven't been brought out yet."
The food, when it did come out, was cold for some. For others, it was just not good. The juevos rancheros, which I ordered, were nothing more than eggs with some pace salsa on them--no black beans; no ranchero sauce; no tortillas.
I'm sorry guys, breakfast just isn't that hard to get right and you missed the mark.
3 words... Catfish Eggs Benedict. 3 more words... Bangin' Like (a) Benz. The 10th Street Pourhouse has my favorite breakfast around, The Catfish Eggs Benedict. They fry up the catfish just right and never chince on the Hollandaise Sauce. Plus, they've got plenty of other breakfast delectables and always a new surprise on the "Todays Specials" menu. If you live in Center City its an easy walk to build up an appetite. The Pourhouse is right on the border btw. The Gayborhood and Washington Square West. Parking can be a bit of a pain but Its a million times better than waiting 2 hrs. for a seat at Sabrinas.
"Check-a-check-a-check-it-out!
i keep coming back. ok, it's literally around the corner from my house, but still...
don't let the unassuming exterior fool you. or the unassuming interior. or the unassuming waitstaff. you get the point. beware: at times it seems overrun by people in white coats or pajamas. they're med students. mostly harmless unless challenged at beer pong.
this place serves excellent french toast. no, not freedom toast. not spongy, messy, gimmicky toast (i'm talking at you sabrina's). french bread french toast with a little caramelized sugar to make it sweet enough that you don't even need syrup. this, my friends, is the way it is done.
and if you want something other than french toast, well, they have a menu too. and if that doesn't satisfy you, they have daily specials. oh, and i hear their cafe au lait is a thing of beauty. and not overpriced like the place across the street (you know who you are).
i eat veggie burgers and veggie chili here, too. the latter is one of the best values at under $4 for a bowl, and they don't over do it with the rice. whatever spicy combination they chef-up to make the chili, i am into it.
they're only open till 3pm, so no clubbin', sorry. but seven days a week, so this is a good backup if you aren't in the mood for an hour wait south of south street.
On my birthday I rolled out of bed around two. My friend Bob and I had one mission and one mission only: bacon. Yes, we were in search of the ever-delectable, fried pork product breakfast food. We headed to the 10th Street Pourhouse, which used to be a regular eating spot for me when I worked in that neighborhood.
They have a vague Cajun/ New Orleans theme and the menu is reflective of that. You can get Cajun Eggs Benedict or andouille sausage with your omelet. Both are spicy and hearty. However, I'm partial to ladling a small cup of black bean chile over poached eggs for a sort of make-your-own huevos rancheros (these are two separate menu items).
The waitstaff is pure eye candy, both Bob and I agreed. The coffee is a little on the weak side and they don't always have soymilk (which prompted me to bring my own and have them store it there back in the day) but the food is satisfying for the hungry bacon-seeker.
I adore this place. It has the perfect little brunch setting, cute wooden booths, tables by the windows where you can look out onto 10th street. Their omelettes are fantastic and I would also highly recommend their po'boy sandwiches. Even though they're only open during morning and brunch hours, they have a great menu selection, which includes delicious cajun-styled dishes, and really good prices. I love the huge mugs they serve tea and coffee in, I love the slow Sunday mornings I've spent here, I love the location. One of my best friends actually lived right above this place (hence the frequent occasions here) and would wake up to the generator turning on every morning...the sounds of delicious food in the making. My favorite brunch place in Philly, hands down.
The food isn't great here, only a few recommendations such as the Vegetarian Chili and garden burger. They tend to 'over bacon' things and it ruins the taste, I know that sounds odd... I mean who doesn't love bacon? Well this bacon isn't that great. Coffee service is OK, nothing steller. I always get amazing service from the wait staff, but they don't hang around long, which makes me think the owner isn't paying them much (mostly students). They have breakfast but don't open till 10am, which in my mind is the end of breakfast for most people. Earlier hours might find me frequenting the establishment more often. They also don't do dinner hours.
