This was the greatest vacation experiece ever! The pilot, Kyle and guide, Holly could not have been more pleasant and informative. I am so glad we were lucky enough to enjoy this tour of the Mendenhall Glacier.
We we able to take fabulous pictures and drink fresh glacier water, we even took pictures inside an ice cave.

Our pilot, Colin, was an excellent guide. The helicopter trip and hike around the Mendenhall Glacier were fantastic, but for the money we spent I wish it would have lasted a lot longer.

So for two months I was super excited that our first cruise stop in Juneau, would start off with a helicopter tour landing on the Mendenhall Glacier, and riding some dog sleds up there.  One hour before pick up time *ring* *ring* due to inclement weather, we must cancel the tour, and give you a 100% refund. What?!? THAT SUCKS!!! 100% refund is reasonable, and I understand you can't control the weather, but I'm probably never gonna be in Juneau ever again with my family and gf.
Anyway, the people at Temsco scrambled to help me (and I'm sure they had many others who got canceled that day too). And luckily they found a pilot's choice glacier tour. It was about $100 less per person, had longer flight time, and we got to stop at two glaciers to walk around. It was an awesome experience, and riding on helicopters is just an amazing experience. I will admit walking on the glacier was a bit freaky, but those over boots they give you grip quite well. They also provide you with hot tea and coffee when you come back which is very comforting.
I only wish they provided some cold weather gear besides boots, as buying/packing all that is an annoyance when going on the cruise. I highly recommend doing a helicopter tour with Temsco. I do still wish we got to do the Dog Sled one, but the Pilot's Choice Tour was still amazing. Great views and lots of pictures (I'll post them soon). And I must also highly recommend booking directly with Temsco..you save about $50-100 per person compared to booking with your cruise and you have more options available.

Icefield expeditions.  It's a different experience.  Temsco Tours has helicopters to take you up to a glacier, or an icefield for dogsledding or aerial tours of the Alaskan wilderness.  This was a separate excursion unrelated to our cruise (a few yrs ago).  It was really cool to be in a helicopter. They put these headsets over your ears and that's how you talk to the pilot.  The copter was so loud, I had no idea.  We landed on top of a glacier and the best way I can describe it from memory is like walking onto a completely icy and rocky field.  It's no where well groomed like a ski run. More like walking on the interior of those old time freezers with the hardened, irregular ice on the side.  You almost wish you had a stick to lean on for fear of sliding off the glacier or into one of the deep crevices with water from the melting ice pouring thru it.
I was surprised as to how dirty the ice looked, brown sediments all over the surface.  Was expecting pristine, white-bluish tinted ice.  It was cold.  Was it worth the nearly $200/per person excursion?  Depends on how you look at it.  It's a once in a lifetime event to stand on top of one of the world's disappearing glaciers but the view is better from the top of a long ski run without  brown ice.
