Review from Jeanne K.
South Loop, Chicago, IL
Tejas Yoga Studio is a very warm, friendly, and inviting studio, owned by two of Chicago's most talented and informed yogis, James Tennant and Jim Bennitt. The teachers at Tejas are really quite extraordinary. Here, you won't find a yogi who stumbled through a "McYoga Factory" training; the teachers and owners here are committed to the deeper elements of the yoga tradition and are committed to modeling and exposing students to yoga traditions that can be absolutely transformative. But it's not all that serious - you'll have a great workout and have fun in the process. Though the teachers have diverse backgrounds and may come from different yoga traditions, all classes include a skillful integration of postures, breath work, and meditation and sequenced in a meaningful way.
Every class at Tejas places significant value in the final savasana and pranayama breathing exercises. At least 10 -15 minutes of time is devoted to savasana and 10 minutes to pranayama breathing exercises. I find it so hard to meditate and perform breath work on my own - I'm grateful to the instructors here for guiding me during each class. You may not be used to this commitment to savasana and breathing if you are coming from a gym environment or a more athletic yoga practice (many yoga studios skip or make this part a DIY process), but I am grateful that this pose is not short-changed here.
I love the physical space of the Tejas studio. I feel like I'm practicing yoga in someone's home. It provides a cozy, beautiful space that exudes the genuine love of the owners. The studio is simple and offers a small changing room and a safe lobby area in which to secure your things, grab a cup of free herbal tea. You won't find a boutique of overpriced clothes, a spa, or a full-fledged locker room here but you will soon find that you won't need them. I appreciate the simplicity.
Teacher Reviews
Here are brief reviews of instructors I have taken at least 3 times at Tejas:
Jim Bennitt is a well-known yoga instructor who presents nationally, so it is not a surprise his classes are excellent. His classes are intense; he pushes you to achieve your physical and mental potential (if you choose to). No class is the same; I treasure the variety. I love the creativity he integrates in his classes; there are always new poses I have never tried. His classes combine a lot of hard work, deep instruction, and absolute attentiveness to each student.
James Tennant's class will leave you feeling a greater sense of freedom and vitality within your body. He exudes incredible passion and joy for yoga, which drives students to feel the same. He is incredibly vigilant about understanding the physical presence of every student in class and has a great memory of each person's own yoga progress. He is absolutely engaged and attentive and present as an instructor. James also has a wonderful sense of humor, which he integrates well in each class.
Marcelyn Cole is a playful, philosophical, and precise teacher. Her classes are incredibly informative regarding shoulder and arm placement and energy as we perform the poses. I have learned so much in a few sessions about the reasons I hunch my shoulders (and how to address it). Marcelyn integrates depth in the practice, but in a way that's accessible for all.
Keely Jones is a warm, positive yoga teacher. She is such a welcoming presence with a soothing voice (I wish she could talk me through my nighttime meditation!) and breaks down each pose so that they are understandable for individuals who struggle with balance. Keely is great at describing poses in a way I can really understand and provides excellent hands-on adjustment. Keely personifies positive energy - it's great to have her as an instructor leading an uplifting workout.
Paul Hnatiw creates an instant level of comfort for students. He is exceptional at breaking down poses and explaining the anatomical basis of each pose and which muscles to focus on; you'll see fast improvement with Paul's classes . Because of Paul's knowledgeable instruction, I now know the importance of conditioning my serratus interior for so many asanas and I know what the POA is. Paul is a creative, compassionate, and memorable yoga teacher.
Parking and Location
Tejas is conveniently located by the Roosevelt El Stop and the Michigan Ave/State Street bus lines. If you do park, park south of Roosevelt on Wabash. It's cheaper. You can also find parking on 13th St by Scout. Tejas is located in the same building as the Cosmopolitan Loft at 1133 S. Wabash (right next to Trader Joes). But it's to the LEFT of the the entrance to the building in Suite 101. There is a bike rack in front and easy to miss.
Do yourself a favor and visit Tejas and get your bliss on! -

Despite my youth and young adult training as a dancer, I am not flexible. At one point I was able to do the splits all around, but I was 12. That's not happening now in my early 30s, but I sure would like to be more flexible! I'd also like to be more relaxed and hop on this yoga life style craze. I've taken some of the free classes at Lululemon, but am always intimidated.
Tejas offers a wonderful introduction to yoga class. I wasn't intimidated or looking to help from the other participants. I relaxed and focused on me (isn't that what yoga is about anyway? Not who's wearing the cutest outfit, though I do like the gear that comes with it.) The instructor explained various forms of breathing, the reason behind different poses and their benefits. After my 90 minute class I felt utterly at ease and excited for my next class.
As I'm not a yogi, I can't say this studio would be right for everyone. The space is small, but zen. The staff is friendly, and the location just north of the Wabash/Roosevelt intersection is ideal. For a neophyte like me, Tejas felt just right. -

I am recovering from a bulged disc and took the gentle class on Friday at 6p. I feel better the day after then I have in a while! This studio is steps from the red line. It's a few doors down from Trader Joe's, restaurants or get back on the train and head to meet friend in a different neighborhood.
The studio is designed so it's very welcoming and relaxing.
I'm not much of a yogi and I don't do yoga very often but this place and the instructor (Jim) have inspired me! I've been doing yoga for years but never regularly and consider myself a beginner, I always feel comfortable in Jim's classes, he's very patient with me and helps me at my level yet at the same time I can see the advanced members in the class are very challenged. Tejas offers several classes to fit in your schedule from early morning, mid-day and evening. My schudele can change all the time so it's nice to have several options. -

Not sure where all the 5 stars are coming from. Its not terrible..but not 5 star worthy either.
First of all, the space is tiny and your mat is literally 3 inches away from your neighbors. Not cool when you're all sweaty and trying to concentrate on breathing and movement.
Second of all, be prepared to lay still for at least 20 minutes! This class could easily be an hour long without this time which is supposed to be to relax. However, it's really hard to relax because it's dead silent so you hear everyone around you breathing, snoring (yes at least 3 people always fall asleep during the last part and start snoring LOUDLY) and you also hear the elevator going up and down, people opening and closing doors, footsteps up and down the stairs..ugh you get the idea.
My suggestion would be to play some type of Zen music during this time to give us something to focus on to help block the other distracting sounds that are amplified with the "silence".
Its location is pretty convenient though, right off the Red line Roosevelt stop.
The instructors seem very knowledgeable and are really nice, its just the format of the class itself that turns me off. -

I started my yoga practice about 14 months ago. After bumping around to different studios I found Tejas. SOOO happy that I did!!!
Jim and James are both excellent instructors and have helped me so much over the last year. Every class is as calming or challenging as I need it to be for that day. I always walk out of class feeling like my whole day has been improved by spending 90 minutes with these two guys....
Thanks so much for providing me with Tejas.. -

Tejas would receive 10 stars if it were possible!
Now that I have taken all of the classes offered at Tejas from their instructors, it was time for an update. To truly experience what makes Tejas special, take a class with some of the different instructors who bring a plethora of knowledge and experience to this studio. Each has their own distinct style and personality which keeps the yoga practice fresh and enlightening.
I have learned not only about yoga but Ayurveda through their workshops that have deepened my practice to another level.
So if you're looking for a home away from home, this is the place to be.1 Previous Review: Show all »

A great addition to the neighborhood! I've heard good things about this place- James was a great instructor. I tried the "gentle" class on Sunday afternoon since I wanted to squeeze in a weekend workout. I am an avid workout person but I was looking to yoga for more relaxation. This particular class seemed to focus more on stretching/chanting than the yoga I was used to but overall it was a nice experience.

I highly recommend this place! The teachers are amazing and the studio is beautifully designed. The south loop is in need of an authentic yoga studio and you can find that with Tejas Yoga.
It is conveniently located near tons of transportation and tons of great places to get lunch or dinner after an amazing yoga experience.
I am a huge fan of Jim Bennitt wherever he is, but being able to take classes from him in his own studio is amazing. Jim and James own this place and they have put such thought into finding the space and setting it all up.
This is a great place to unwind and take amazing yoga classes from amazing teachers. It is worth the trip to the South Loop if you don't live nearby and if you live in the neighborhood you must go!! -

Tejas, I love you. Not only have you brought a beautiful, warm, and tranquil space to the South Loop, but your practice also offers students a chance to stretch themselves both physically and mentally.
I'm a Kripalu student and have found too many studios tend to focus only on the physical exertion -- that's great, but I actually don't want to feel like I'm at the gym with a bunch of hypercompetitive fitness fiends when I take a yoga class. I want a quiet space to open up and push the limits of my muscles while my mind enters that blissed-out state that yoga offers. I know, sounds cheesey, but it works. Tejas seems like they get that, and their class was everything I've been missing since I moved away from my old studio.
I took my first class with Erin and I loved, loved, loved it. If you've had a year or two of practice, the moderate class may be your style. Get in there before everyone discovers this place! -

I'm very new to yoga, so I am no expert by any stretch of the imagination. But I decided to check out Tejas because it is one of the few yoga studios closeby to us south siders.
The space is small, but beautiful. I took a "basics" class with Jim. The class was small, so there was a ton of personal attention. At first the small class size intimidated me because there was no way I could hide in the back of the room, but it ended up being a great experience. I felt totally comfortable and I got all the help I needed on the more challenging aspects of the session.
There is a major focus on breath work and meditation here, so be prepared to sit still for 20-30minutes! The meditation was a new (and challenging) experience for me, but I do think it is worth while. I walked away from the class feeling refreshed and more aware of what was going on with my body.
All in all, I highly recommend Tejas! -

This is what I consider "real" yoga. There are no gimmicks at Tejas. The focus is on clear instruction and guidance on breath work and form. If you are new to yoga this is a great studio to start your practice. The basic and moderate classes are easy to follow while providing a great workout. If you are more advanced in your practice you will find the vigorous classes challenging. Advanced poses are broken down into steps so you can work your way up to them. Jim and James are patient, thorough and often have the class laughing.
I love that there is an emphasis on the philosophy, breath work and meditation in the classes at Tejas. I think I walk away from every class feeling like I've learned something new about yoga. They also brew this magic herbal tea that you can sip after class. I need to find out where to buy this stuff because I get cravings.
The real testament to the classes at Tejas: I got home recently after a vigorous class and my boyfriend was feeling mischievous, and started picking on me and otherwise tormenting me. Usually this kind of behavior will end up in me yelling at him "NO ME MOLESTA!!" But that day I barely noticed because I was so blissed out. He commented that maybe he should try yoga if I could ignore him like that. He's in luck, because Tejas has a special class just for men. I am working to convince the boyfriend that he needs to go, if anything to tell me how it is. They don't let ladies in there.
Practicing at Tejas has been a joyful learning experience. I know that this studio is a place where I will deepen my practice and my understanding of yoga. -

I bought this on a living social deal. 30 days of yoga for $30. It's the highlight of my day each day. The yoga instructors are the best I've had. The place is peaceful and calming.
I love this place. -

I love this place, Jim and James have done a fantastic job creating a comfortable and relaxing practice in the frantic South Loop. I started going here about a month ago on the suggestion of my friend Ashley who works for Jim as something of a PA, and i have enjoyed every session! I highly recommend this studio if you've got an ok idea of what you want from your practice, as the teachers are very receptive and great at communicating with people coming in before class. I haven't taken any beginner classes here, but I can only assume these amazing teachers easily get people going and as excited to return for their next class as I am after every visit.

James is truly the best yoga teacher I've ever had the privilege of working with (from NYC to Cali, TO to VanCity). His energy and passion for yoga and life are contagious. Call me crazy but I could consider moving to Chicago just to spend more time at his studio.

You cannot ask for a better yoga studio, and we are so fortunate Tejas is in the South Loop. Jim and James are the two most caring and thoughtful instructors who really take the time to improve your practice. Plus it goes beyond just taking classes, with all the educational workshops. If you are looking for a yoga community, this is it!

I couldn't be happier to have Tejas in my neighborhood. I mostly take the Gentle class as a way to wind down at the end the week, and I recommend it highly. I've been in classes taught by both Jim and James, and both are as nice as can be. They're welcoming to everyone who comes to their studio, regardless of ability, size, experience, flexibility, etc. Both are great teachers with loads of knowledge about yoga, as well as related subjects such as meditation, ayurveda, nutrition, and holistic health. It's simply a great feeling to be in the space they've created.

soulful yoga in the south loop! what a blessing!
i had regularly practiced with both jim and james, the studio co-owners, at other studios in town and had tremendous respect for both of them. so, as a pilsen gal, imagine my joy when they opened a cozy little studio in the south loop.
here at tejas, one gets the chance to work in an intimate space with serious, caring instructors. after 7 years of practice at various studios, i never considered myself part of the yoga community. the larger studios always felt like too much of a 'yoga scene' for me to feel truly at home. tejas' small size combined with the gentle commitment of james, jim and the other instructors to providing a balanced yoga practice offers the yoga community a more intimate and connected space. in addition to jim and james, i would enthusiastically recommend kerri and erin, as they are both highly intentional and caring teachers.
class level is taken very seriously at tejas. if you attend a moderate, you know you'll get a moderate. it can be very frustrating to feel like an instructor has upgraded the difficulty level, but instructors here are very intentional about striking a good balance between accessibility and challenge. that said, i've had many an instructor here provide options for advancing your practice, both physical and spiritual.
instructors at tejas take the spiritual element of one's yoga practice very seriously, but they somehow never get dogmatic--meditation always feels like an individual exploration rather than a mandated exercise. and after practice, the serene smiles trade around the room easily.
from yoga beginners to seasoned yogis and yoginis, get thee to tejas. you'll be glad you did. -

Tejas Yoga is a breath of fresh air (ha ha!) in the South Loop. All of the instructors are EXTREMELY knowledgeable, easy to talk to and clear in their instruction. The more modern design of the studio is inviting as is the small and always toasty practice space. Grab your mat ... and go!
