    This. Place. Is. Amazing.

Literally the best tacos I've had outside of Mexico. My personal favorite is the beef sope. I could eat one (or more) everyday. The chicken was OK but not particularly flavorful, but that's not enough to take it down a star because the other stuff is that good. You can't beat it for a real NYC experience either.

    One word: Lengua

I declare to the world... "Hi, my name is Andreas and I have a tongue addiction."

This little Mexican Deli/Grocer offers some of the best (if not THE best) Mexican food in all of Manhattan.  I've complained for years about not being able to find decent (and authentic) Mexican food on the island, so I am absolutely thrilled that I finally tried this place.  What makes it even better?  It's less than 10 blocks from my casa.

Very good place, a little different in that it is a small deli store, you pick your beverage of choice and head to the back to order your food.  It is actually very authentic and resembles something you would find in Mexican tiendra.

They have lots of varieties and on one trip we (3 of us), tried a bunch of differnt one and all were good, so I have not yet found my fav, the only one that stood out in the slightest for me was the tongue taco.

They are super nice and very busy with regular clients, on this day when I got the pick is was filled with Mexican, do yurself a favor and try this hole in the wall for a great meal.

Positives: glitzy barstools and bar counters, crema on the al pastor sope, the $1 pan dulce with crema!!!, cheap/good food, Mexican soccer on the tele

Negatives: Guy wanted $5.50 for sub-par packaged chorizo I get in Northern California for $1.25, sope didn't come with cilantro but in fairness they sprinkled some on after I asked.

Good place for a taco or sope on the weekend if you're craving Mexican food. Very reasonable priced but didn't like the food as much as the Mexican place around the corner. Would go back again to try some more items. Really deserves 3.5 etstrellas. Should have asked about the queso oaxaca that was for sale... Next time.

As an East Village-r, I venture into Hell's Kitchen approximately 2x per year. So when I make it to the West 50s, I want to make sure it's a damn good time!

I went to Tehuitzingo on a Friday around 7 pm and there was no line, so I was able to get in and out in under 30 minutes! It's literally a deli/bodega, but if you go further into the back, there's a strobe light and a small kitchen. Grab a beer from the cooler and get to it! Pay for everything at the front when you're done. Simple, authentic, AND delicious!

It's not the cleanest store in the world (I saw a roach), but - oh my, deliciousness, I don't care.

Here's what I've been getting the last three years:

1 el pastor and 1 bistek taco (don't tend stray from anything besides those two since I'm a pollo) - I tend to put a deluge of Valentina sauce to spice it up. These two tacos go perfect with a Mexican Coca Cola and a Pulparindo tamarind candy bar at the end.

    Bring cash!

Yes, this place is unique and authentic. You feel like an insider, walking through what seems like a plain little bodega to the counter in the back. Yes, the tacos are cheap and flavorful, definitely a cut above your typical neighborhood Mexican joint. But are they life-changing or earth-shattering? No. My main issue is just that the meat was so dry! Both the chicken and the spicy pork were just charred beyond recognition. I was aiming for more moist, tenderly-shredded to perfection. Maybe they don't try so hard for a gringa. Maybe I just got them on a bad night. But I was disappointed. By the way, we were there at 7pm on a Wednesday night and there was not a soul and within 10 minutes, we had our feast.

This place gets an extra star from me for the prices -- 7 tacos, 1 quesadilla, and 2 drinks for $23. Beat that.

I don't eat beef or pork, so I can't pretend that this is a comprehensive review. Most of the tacos at Tehuitzingo Deli are things like lengua, carnitas, and chicharron which, while definitely authentic, are things that I just can't try.

So, since I've only been able to sample a small portion of the menu and because I'm in a direct kind of mood tonight, I'll keep it simple:

    1. On my first visit, I ordered chicken tacos but got the arroz con pollo tacos instead. Although that combination sounded kind of strange to me, it turned out to be a lucky break because those tacos were damn yummy. They're now my regular order here.

    2. In the back seating area, there is usually a little metal tin that has two kinds of salsas, lime wedges, and chopped onion. I'm telling you this because I didn't find it until my second visit and that green salsa should be a mandatory addition to the tacos.

    3. The chicken is not icky at all. I have yet to find something scary inside one of my tacos, and, on top of that, the chicken is genuinely tasty and perfectly cooked.

    4. For people who care about these kinds of things, here are my credentials: I was raised in Arizona and lived in Northern California for five years. This place isn't perfect, but it passes my "Southwest Test." :-)

Mexicocina in the Bronx still has my favorite New York City tacos, but the Tehuitzingo location is hard to beat if you're stuck in midtown.

Went on a nasty Saturday afternoon for the first time.  Two buddies and I got 10 tacos and 2 tortas.  None of us had a negative thing to say.  Tacos range frrom $2.50 - $3.00. Tortas are $6.00.  Wash it all down with a tamarind Jarrito and it is time to go into a nice food coma.

Unfortunately, they had no pozole, but I will be stopping in again very soon.

Many of the reviews are quite accurate and good, so I will just add my limited two cents.  For $2.50 a taco, you can't do much better in Manhattan.  Cheap beer adds to the allure.  As for the tacos, they are fine.  There is one exceptional exception.  The Chicharron taco consists of a slab of fatty goodness, excellently seasoned.  Its not over fried, and is worth the journey.

Would avoid their desserts.  You probably could have figured that out for yourself, but trust me, your instincts are correct.

Some of the best food is found in very unassuming places. If you want tacos for $2.50 and beers for $3.25 come to this hole in the wall. I have had tacos up and down this city, here at Tehuitzingo it rates high, very high.

I had two each of the following: Carnitas, Enchiladas and Pastor. All delicious and yummy. They were moist and full of flavor. The meat was pull coarse and it had a nice bite to it. It was top with raw chop onions and cilantro. It was hot, tasty, fantastic, all the good things that you remember in a good taco.

The restaurant is a narrow space with a grocery store up front and the Taqueria in the back. It has about 12 or so bar stools and you order at the back window and wait for your food to be call. Select your beverage of choice, my was a Pacifico, and enjoy.

This place is one of those no frills gems that has people coming back again and again.

This place is a regular stop for me.  The best traditional mexican food in the city, and unbelievable prices.
My personal favorites are the suadero (beef belly) tacos and the carnitas.

Definitely not for someone looking for fish tacos, cheddar cheese/guacamole/sour cream/nachos, or small portions.  This is genuine mexican food at its very best.

I try (not always successfully) to avoid going on lunch Fridays as there is always a slightly obnoxious/ignorant yuppie crowd that crowds the already narrow dining area in the back.

A friend who lives in Hell's Kitchen took me to this misleading store front hidden with taco goodness. I wasn't that hungry so I had a carnita taco that was divine. I like the taste of spicey sauces, but can't handle the actual spice. So the green sauce was good enough for me and I went back for more to add onto my taco. This is definitely a spot I could see Tony Bourdain raving about on the Travel Channel.

"Don't Eat Here. I Hate Waiting In Lines."

Are you flippin' kidding me, holmes? This place is a goldmine of deliciousness, and I can't get enough of their tacos de lengua. So tender, flavorful, and moist.

Eating here feels more like you're chowing down on some Mexican grub in a friend of a friend's kitchen than eating in a Manhattan taqueria. Step over to your friend's fridge and grab a 40oz of Sol or a 32oz of Tecate - to share if you must (it's a bit cheaper than buying individual cans). Pop 'em open with the bottle opener bolted to the wall and wait for the order you placed moments before at the window to be called out.

The narrow space never seems small, even when all the seats are taken, due to the mirrors everywhere. And the people that congregate here regularly appear to be of a specifically laid-back and friendly nature.

For those of you who dare say "There's no good Mexican in New York City" and then keep making excuses when I point out a handful of uptown joints: I'll hear of your excuses no more. This Hell's Kitchen hole-in-the-wall serves up a delicious plate of sopes, tacos, quesadillas, and more.

Do yourself a favor and put some of this love/meat wrapped in tortilla in your mouth, gringo. It may not be hecho en Mexico, but it sure as hell tastes like it.

This is a place that churns out good, standard, respectable Mexican food. The interior is very funky (see pics) but the authenticity of what they dish up makes this place certainly worthy of making it a regular haunt.

First time I came in, I'd never had a chorizo & potato taco before but I ordered one and it was pretty good. The chorizo was extremely mild and mixed with the potatoes, this taco had a very creamy taste and velvety texture. I was expecting crispy pig skin on the chicharones & green sauce taco, but the skin was softened by the sauce. Unexpected, but tasty all the same.

The crowning glories though, are their carnitas sopes. They don't look like much when they come out but man - these are some of the most delicious tasting carnitas I've ever put in my mouth. First time I had one, after I dressed the sope with some green salsa from the condiment tray and put some "Bufalo" brand hot sauce (good stuff!) on it, wow, I was in Heaven. Been there ever since too!

I've also picked up a torta de milaneza to go (the "Steve M. torta and a taco test") and while being pretty good, I'd have to classify it as just ordinary. I really missed the spread of their very good beans that was conspicuously missing from the sandwich. Also, isn't there supposed to be cheese in a torta? Yeah, there is. No cheese on this one though.

There are no tables here, just counters along the mirrored walls at which to sit. You place your order at the window in the back and the nice ladies who are working their butts off back there will call you when your stuff is ready. When you're done, you go to them and they'll give you your check to take up to the front to pay. If you want a drink, just grab one from the store's cooler.

I like this place a lot and I will be and have been back many times for more of those marvelous carnitas in all their incarnations.

The stupid gringo's guide to first-time ordering at Tehuitzingo:

    1) Wander in and scoot through the narrow single aisle to the azure-hued back bar.

    2) Find the back window where two women toil away in partial obscurity.  Wonder where the menu is.

    3) Locate the taco listing on the left, and guess correctly that three tacos is a good-sized lunch.  Deduce that ordering three different meats seems indulgent and creepy.  Get a papas con rajas taco to balance out the two meat choices.  Go with barbacoa because goat sounds safely exotic, and al pastor because why not.

    4) Hang out by the window, waiting to use your inadequate Spanglish to get your order going and preparing yourself not to hold up three fingers when requesting "tres tacos."

    5) Smile at woman who asks "can I help you" and then ask for "three tacos" while holding up three fingers.

    6) Sit at one of the black stools abutting a small counter on either of two windowed walls, and hear what everyone ahead of you ordered as it comes up.  Wonder where on the menu the "chile relleno" was.

    7) Watch the telenovela on the tv near the ceiling, and wonder why they put two fluorescent lights at a spot that will invariably flash a yellow-white reflection down the middle of the tv no matter where you sit.  Follow the plot enough to realize that these ladies are PISSED!

    8) Get food about 10 minutes later, lament that you have no easy ability to put the condiment bar offerings on your tacos if you got them to go, and pay at the front.

    9) Get to your spot de manger and chow down on said tacos, dappling each with the accompanying red sauce.  Congratulate yourself on the papas con rajas because it's pretty freakin' good.

being from cali, i know what real tacos are suppose to taste like. and until now, i was unable to find that here in nyc, until my sister introduced me to this hole in the wall deli, that serves tacos. OH MY! The front of the store is a lil deli, bodega, they sell lots of mexican candies and cold drinks. walk pass the fridgerated section and you'll find a tiny taco stand w/bar stools and counter tops, oh yea and a pinata.

you order thru the lil doorway, sauce your tacos, and eat them at the counter. when ur done, walk to the front of the store, and tell them what you ate and then pay. it's totally based on the honor system.

i got the al pastor taco, which is spicy pork w/pineapples! yes i said pineapples! sauce it w/their salsas, chopped onions and a squeeze of lime and its delicious!! I also got the papas y chorizo taco which is potatoes and chorizo, repeat the above and it's just as amazing as the al pastor. they even give u double tortillas, like in me-hei-co.

for drink or chips etc, you are welcome to grab whatever u want from the store, to enjoy w/your meal. just let them know when u pay.

the only thing that is missing from this place is homemade tortilla chips and some guac. that would have been a whole star in itself.

The Suit loves a bargain. The Suit also loves mass quantities of delicious food. When our pockets were running thin and our taste buds demanded Mexican fare, we head over to this spot.
What would appear to be a regular ol' deli holds in the back of its store a taco stand.
Cramped. Lined with counter tops and stools, you make your way to the small window in the back, order off the huge menu pinned up to the wall and have a seat. The women back there are cooking with their hearts souls.
We walked up to the window, ordered the carnitas, tongue and chicken tacos. Also a platter of rice, beans and grilled chicken.
We walked up to the fridge and pulled out two cokes, sat on our stools and waited.
Minutes later, plates of food were in front of us. The tongue tacos were by far, my favorite! They were well seasoned and incredibly tender.
The plate of grilled chicken was fantastic. Fair warning though, this place is legit- those long green pepper strips are not bell peppers- of course any INTELLIGENT person would know that...
i, am NOT that Bright. I chomped on those pepper strips with their seeds intact and experienced what Johnny Cash dubbed the RING OF FIRE.
Every fiery bite was delicious. When you're done, walk to the front of the store and pay the man at the counter. Honor system.
I went pretty late in the evening, about 8pm- but this place is swarming with cabbies during the day!

¡Taco Crawl! rolled into Manhattan with a stop at Tehuit. I've been to Coatzingo in Queens, I've been to the Red Hook ball fields and Sunset Park and - with the exception of Taco Mix, which is still on my list - these are the clear winners for best tacos in the city. My opinion of Tehuit hasn't changed since my last review, but I get it a little better.

Chris H. mentions this in his review, but the meat's relative dryness, which some people don't like, is actually part of what elevates these tacos above the rest. The dryness allows a more condensed and powerful flavor to hit your taste buds when you try the tacos, and also helps the meat function as a better medium for salsa, which will stick to the meat, right where you want it. A wet taco tastes diluted and is sloppy to eat.

Also, Tehuit's salsas are delicious AND spicy, something that none of the other tacos joints we visited on ¡Taco Crawl! managed to pull off. Since it's a small grocery, you can also buy Cholula by the very large bottle.

I honestly need to lay off the tacos here and try the other things on the menu, which seem even more epic, but it's always tough to say no when the tacos are the best around.

Being from southern California, I was spoiled when having Mexican food. Between taco trucks where they barely spoke Spanglish, if any English and my favorite Mexican "health food" chain it's been sad, living in NY and not being able to find REALLY good tacos.

This place doesn't disappoint.  While, it's far from the best I've had, it'll still hit the spot when I'm craving tacos.  They're affordable, and pretty tasty. Unfortunately, unlike a lot of taco joints from SoCal, they don't have much emphasis on making a healthy taco.  Oh well...

It's such a pain trying to find somewhere to eat/drink before a show at Terminal 5.  Thankfully, I never have to worry about that again now that I know about Tehuitzingo.

I tried to be adventurous and ordered the tongue and maybe the tripe (can't quite recal)l, but more unusual stuff, and while it was ok, I enjoyed the ol' standards (pork, beef, chicken) the most.

Load up on cheap tacos and cheap beer and then go dance your heart out at T5

"This is probably what new york was like in the 80s"

How my friend described this place.  The food isn't very veg friendly -- I'm guessing there was meat somehow involved in the veg stuff that I ordered, but I'm going to be blissfully ignorant about it.

We sat around dranking some beers while we waited, and re-capped them on our way out.  Gotta love that.

As I read through these reviews, I realized that my bill was also 22.50.  Apparently 22.50 is what they charge for two people's worth of food and some beers.  I'm sure that's the wrong amount, but I really don't care.

I've been getting my taco fix at Tehuitzingo for about three years now, and each time I return, my love for this little Mexican grocer / taco stand grows.

That said, I thought it would be appropriate to share with the Yelping public the top five things I love about Tehuitzingo:

    5) The shop's facade barely hints at the glory within;

    4) The taco ladies behind the counter announce your order en Español;

    3) Self-serve pickled jalapeños, chopped onions, and assorted hot sauces;

    2) Beer by the bottle for purchase; and

    1) The LENGUA tacos are out of this world.

Next time you're craving an authentic taco, I'd strongly recommend scampering on down to Tehuitzingo.  4.5 stars if possible.

Really cool spot. Definitely feels like an authentic Mexican taqueria. Here the tacos are bare bones, not dressed up like other places in the city. And it's cheap! I had the lengua which was amazingly succulent. And I also had the carnitas and pork belly. Both were a little dry. Everything is cheap and this is a great place to take friends. It looks like a regular bodega outside so they won't expect that they're in for some awesome tacos.

Unique Mexican spot in Hell's Kitchen. You'd never know this place served hot food from the outside, and it takes a few steps into the small bodega storefront to notice the alley towards the back. You could easily be in Mexico with retro stools, cheaply mirrored walls, and a hodgepodge of decorations like a green LED disco ball.

The food is quite good; great portions at low prices, and the counters have a variety of hot sauces and other toppings to use at your leisure. I'm not sure I agree with the Yelp reviewers who want to call this the best Mexican food in the city, but it's certainly quality far beyond what you'd expect from its appearance. A neat other feature is that you can grab any beer out of the fridge and enjoy it with your meal before paying.

So why three stars? For most people, the place will be pretty far out of the way. While the food is good and the experience unique (for some, charming, for others, a bit too seedy), it feels like more of a "have to go here once" vibe than a place I am likely to return again and again. That said, if you're in the neighborhood and want a cheap taco on the go, it's a 5 star joint.

This small bodega/restaurant is waaaay off the beaten path on 10th Ave. According to yelp, they had some of the best Mexican food around. As a  native of the south, I am constantly searching for some good Mexican food, which the New York area lacks so acutely.

So I go in with good vibes. The place feels pretty authentic and the unorthodox restaurant-in-bodega seems like it will lead to good things.

I go up to the window and order a series of tacos and sopes. They have an assortment of seemingly homemade salsas - another great sign. My dinner companion points out that they have a cooler of beer in which you can buy singles to enjoy with your food (though somehow I doubt they have a license for this service). So we pick up a couple and wait for the food. It comes out after a fairly short wait.

The food: pretty good. Not great though. The taco corn tortillas seem to be microwaved (not heated up on the stove with a little oil as they should be...). And in my barbacoa, there were some small pieces of bone in the meat that felt pretty gnarly in my teeth as I bit down. Based on food, I'd probably give it a 3-star. Decent, but not worth the trip to no man's land.

Ah, the bill. I take my bill to the front. The guy adds it up and it comes to $22.50. Not a bad price, I suppose. I pay and leave with my dinner companion. As we got to the next block, said companion audibly noted that when she went to this restaurant one time before, the bill had also been $22.50. We got 3 sopes with meat, listed at $2.75 each, 2 tacos at $2.75, and the 2 beers. That's all. So after some quick math, I realized that our total should have been $13.75 + the beers. Now $5 a beer is not so crazy for this city, but at a place like this, I felt like it probably was a little too much. So much to the chagrin of said dinner companion, I marched back to the restaurant and asked how much the beers were:

    "Three dollars"

"I think you may have added up our total incorrectly"

He then takes out the receipt and gives me the this-is-what-they-gave-me-and-this-is-not-my-fault speech. But what they gave him was correct. So he recalculates. He says the sopes cost $3 each (though they are clearly marked at $2.75). But eventually comes to a total of $19.75. Oops, I owe you $2.75.

Well, I'll take it. Though I think the pricing is fairly fluid at this place. So anyways. I probably won't be back due to the overrated food, but also the attempted ripoff.

Walk through the little grocery shop entrance past the Halloween ghost decor and you'll be taken to what is the best Mexican food I've found in NY.   Being adventurous and back 3x in a week.... I've tried their taco, quesadilla, sope, beef tripe soup (umm.. yeah, definitely not my thing).  They sell Mexican coke also - made of real sugar!

Amazing tacos - beef, pork, veal tongue, and yes, even pig ear, are all delicious.  Highly recommend their sopes, which I found better than tacos, is an amazing cornmeal cake topped with beans, meat, cheese, and what I endearingly translated to "open-face burritos" for my friend who only wanted burritos to come here w/me.  I've tried their pumpkin flower quesadilla - corn meal tortilla wrapping pickled pumpkin flower topped with cheese, which was interesting.

Definitely see a whole lot more Tehuitzingo Deli in my future!

    can't complain for 2.50 a taco

but some people are right bout this place.  altho plenty of meat, the meat lacks flavor.  even pouring tons of sauce didn't make it have a better kick... just made it more sour.

suadero - supposed to be fatty and moist... dry instead
lengua - nice and moist but no flavor needed more salt
salted beef - prolly fav cuz it was overly salted
carne asada - crispy but tasted dry as well
tripe - fav... moist and flavorful.

also tortillas were on the drier side... 2 tortillas per taco was a lil excessive for me cuz the size was big enough as it was.

The sopes are better than the tacos imho.  The sopes con carne start with the cornmeal thin cake on the bottom topped with beans, a nice mound of meat and a healthy sprinking of queso blanco.  And while it sounds simple, the melody of flavors made me wonder why I'd only ordered one..  The Chorizo con Papas taco was okay though disappointing after the sopes.

My sopes and taco, 3 more bottles of El Yucateco Green Chile Habanero sauce and a slice of Flan (purchased in the front of the store - though it is made in NJ) set me back $18.25.

Morale of the story:  No one can have too much hot sauce.  One bottle for home, one bottle for the office and one bottle just in case :)

I came here on a man date for lunch and I was blown away.  First, authentic-ish style tacos I've had in New York.  Actually, in my life!  I've only had burritos and Taco Bell and just fell very short of the real Mexican taco experience.  At $2.50 a pop, maybe it's a a quarter or two more than I would like it but yo, this ish is good right here.  I had the spicy pork and goat meat and BUH BAM!  So good!

It's hidden well in the back of a Latino deli-grocery and it's kind of too warm and sticky and cramped by the taco window but there's a nice park across the street with table benches suitable for ages 1-7 that my friend and I readily took advantage of.  My legs and ass hurt a bit after I got up however.  The tacos lessened the pain.

Pretty good tacos at $2.50 each. Really liked the chorizo with potatoes and the spicy pork.

Will venture to try the other tacos another time for sure.

I'm going to be brief. You can't go wrong with $2.50 a taco, a salsa bar with pickled stuff and all kinds of salsa, and a small / cute back area where you can see them cooking your food.

Seriously, delicious and awesome. They also deliver for any order over $10!

The name says deli grocery, but wait...that's not all. In the back is a little restaurant, and I mean little.

You wouldn't know it by walking by, the place looks to be maybe 18' in width and 75' feet deep. As you enter you'll see the deli part, the big refrigerator case and the cash register. As you venture deeper you'll see the grocery section. Just beyond that you come up to an area that has stools along the wall with a small ledge for your food.

Just beyond that...your hole in the wall. Well to me more the size of a walk in closet, or to a New Yorker almost a bedroom. Anyway I found two very friendly Mexican ladies busy cooking away.

I had steak tacos (cheap) and I asked for a side of rice and beans (huge) enough for two. The food was very good and authentic, muy bien. If you like your beans like they went through the blender, not here. Here you get actual beans. I wonder is this the distinction between bean and re-fried beans, maybe?

On the ledge you'll find a self service array of different salsas red, green, etc., and slices of lime.  For me lime on a taco=yum, I know overused Yelp term.

Phillip L., described the ordering and payment directions 3-6 in his review has it covered, but don't worry if you screw this part up they're very friendly so you won't hear, "no taco for you!"

I know NYC has all of those great restaurants, however you can find those in any large city...someplace headed up by Chef I'm all that. For me when I'm in NY or pretty much anywhere, I like to find the local flavor. There's way to much to do in NYC to spend three hours in a restaurant having a long and drawn out meal with wine parings. I get it, for some that's one of the experiences and if you live in podunk I'll give you a pass on this.

Go ahead and waste your time in the fancy pants places. I'll stick to the dirty dogs, pizza slices and hot H&H bagels with a schmear, that's my NY.

A hole in the wall but interesting find. Cheap tacos and a lot of it. The fillers pretty good but the shells are just ok. I'd go there if you really want to feel like you found something.
