4 reviews for Teddy's Restaurant
I love Greek food. I grew up on Greek diners, traveled in Greece, have enjoyed Greek home cooking and even dig the fancier kind of Greek cooking, though the simplicity of the cuisine is part of what I love about it. This is a good straightforward Greek restaurant that also offers some typical diner items to round out the menu. The prices are very fair, the food is tasty and the portions are large. The owner, Teddy, buzzes around the place welcoming customers and playing a supervisory role. Our server was attentive and very professional, but he didn't have much else to do: we were the only ones there, since we'd arrived for lunch two hours before the start of dinner service. Decor was Greek themed, but neither overly ostentatious nor kitschy. They do not serve beer or wine, but were quite happy to provide us with wine glasses and a corkscrew for the bottle we'd brought.
The sauteed squid (in a tomato marsala sauce - $7.50 lunch special) was delicious. My wife opted for the lemon roasted potatoes (quite good) in lieu of pasta, but the pasta would have been a better match. A gyro sandwich was enormous, not to mention cheap at $6. It's so easy to find a greasy second rate version of this classic, and so nice to find such a good example here. One taste and I was suddenly 16 again, sitting in a Greek diner, falling in love with Greek food for the first time. That and a plate of fries just about wrecked us, but my wife didn't stop there: she opted for Greek yogurt (covered with honey, black cherries and walnuts, $8) and thick Turkish coffee for dessert. The yogurt was thick, tangy and sweet from the honey, but we were unable to finish the portion. My wife admitted she wouldn't have ordered it had she realized the portion size. Had we been a table of four this dessert could have taken care of all.
So for $34 (before tip) we had a great late lunch that made dinner unnecessary. It was easily a step or two above fast food Greek for just a couple bucks more.
I plan on going back to get a little deeper into the Greek specialties on the menu. Teddy's was that promising - it appears to be a pretty serious Greek restaurant doing double duty as a diner. Classic New York alive and well! The calamari was good enough that I'm eager to try the seafood dishes; I think the octopus is calling me. At these prices it wouldn't be much of a big deal for my wife and me to work our way through the menu.
I'm also looking forward to checking out their backyard outdoor seating, once the weather warms up a bit.
Nice job, Mr Pappas! Your restaurant is exactly the kind of place I pine for, and your prices are exactly what I'd like to pay. See you around.
Such a treat! Teddy's doesn't look like much from the outside and so I've skipped right by it since I moved to the neighborhood. On a whim we went in for breakfast and were really impressed with the experience. The service was very good, eggs , toast, coffee potatoes, fresh fruit and OJ all for $6.50 and a beautiful backyard garden area I wish I had known about this summer.
Next time I'll actually try some greek food, but for your standard breakfast, I'm a fan.
This is a greek restaurant and the food is good as well as the service...great place for a meeting....
They have pretty yummy staples. Here the chicken fingers were plump and juicy but the bbq sauce is kind of weak! The burger and fries from there is pretty good and very filling!
Don't get the philly cheese steak (don't ask me why I tried it..it was one of those, "I just came back from church and I still smell like whisky from night before....And I know that nosy old woman knows because she totally gave me one of those disapproving looks and then I felt guilty" kind of Sunday cravings). The texture of the meat was...not very appetizing.
I haven't tried the actual greek items on the menu which is silly of me since its their speciality apparently. I'll report back more later...
